iTunes U tops 600 million downloads
Launched in 2007, iTunes U is an Apple service that lets teachers distribute classroom content to students easily over the Internet. It's available at over 1,000 universities in 123 countries.
In the four years since launch, the program can boast of 600 million downloads, with more than 300 million occurring in the last year. Unlike many online services that are US-centric, iTunes U is decidedly international with 60% of users residing outside the US.
Among the participating schools, Open University and Stanford University are at the top of the download list with over 30 million downloads each. The bulk of the downloads are done on a desktop, but a growing percentage (3

Synrgic preps its T100 handset for the beast phone race
Synrgic may not be a brand name that resonates with mobile-obsessed statesiders, but that's no reason to shrug off the nascent electronics maker's efforts. Magma ExpressBox 3T brings PCIe cards to Thunderbolt Macs
Magma hopes to fix a lack of Thunderbolt devices with its upcoming, newly teased ExpressBox 3T. The box contains slots for three PCIe cards side-by-side for video capture, media transcoding, audio processing and fast data storage. The card lets even a MacBook Air use PCIe cards with relatively little slowdown over the 10Gbps symmetric connection.

Intel's upgraded Sandy Bridge-E may ship November 15
Intel's mid-cycle Sandy Bridge-E processors may have received a more definitive timeframe after a Turkish leak. The initial batch of Core i7 processors, their companion X79 chipset, and possible Xeon E5 processors have a general "Platform Launch" window of between November 14 and 27, but DonanimHaber expected a more exact November 15 date. The release should be a 'hard' launch where shipping computers and individual parts are already in stores.

Plants vs. Zombies updated, and a few other app deals
PopCap has updated the Plants vs. Zombies iOS app with a few new game mode options, purchaseable with the in-game currency at Dave's crazy store. The modes are all different and available in purchases of three each, featuring everything from a mode where you fight invisible zombies to a special bowling mode, and even a variant of PopCap's own Bejeweled called "Beghouled Twist." If you don't want to earn the in-game currency yourself, PopCap's also offering in-app purchases for in-game coins that will unlock each of the modes, so that's another way to go.

Flurry: young drive freemium games, but older users pay more
A wide age gap exists in those willing to use 'freemium' apps and those willing to pay once inside, Flurry found. The youngest audiences were the most willing to play free-to-enter Android and iPhone games, peaking at 32 percent of 18 to 24 year olds, but they were the least prepared to pay. Popularity started dropping after 25, but in-app payments soared, hitting 49 percent of those between 25 and 34.

Microsoft Lync for Mac goes gold
The first version of Lync for Mac has been released to manufacturing, Microsoft says. The software is an enterprise-oriented conferencing tool, on a basic level offering Messenger-style instant messaging with configurable groups and status messages. Younger audiences play more freemium games, but 25-34 year-olds pay for them
Flurry's latest post is yet another interesting read on freemium games on the App Store, specifically which age groups are playing them, and which age groups are paying for them. They've used consumer spending data across over 1.4 billion sessions, which means this information is as accurate as you're going to get outside of Apple's own databases. As you can see above, the patterns are interesting. Younger players are the primary users of freemium games, and that's not really surprising -- we've known for a while that the younger generation is downloading and playing more games than anyone else.

More alleged iPhone 5 cases show flat back, curved edges
Yet another Asian company is claiming to have iPhone 5 cases for sale. Shenzhen L&Y Technology, based in Guangdong province, is selling cases with multiple designs and colors. The accessories are consistent with other cases, which all imply that the next-generation iPhone will have a flat back with tapered edges, mimicking the aesthetics of the iPad 2 and fourth-generation iPod touch.

Google posts native Blogger app for iPhones, iPods
Google closed a big gap in its apps for iPhone and iPod touch owners on Thursday by launching its first-ever version of Blogger for iOS (free, App Store). Like the Android version available for some time, it lets bloggers write posts directly from the phone, either as drafts or taking them live immediately. Posters can flag posts with the phone's location and add photos, either directly from the app or from an existing shot.

Apple launches charitable matching program for employees
MacRumors has confirmed that Apple has instituted a program to match its employees' charitable donations, up to US$10,000 per year. It's restricted to full-time employees in the U.S. for now, but the company hopes to expand that. Tim Cook announced the initiative to Apple's employees earlier today:

Electrified bacteria army kills uranium, gives Captain Planet a run for his money
A certain type of "hairy" bacteria may just be the answer to cleaning up radioactive spills. Scientists at the University of Southern California found that under certain circumstances, Geobacter sulfurreducens could make metals like uranium less soluble -- essentially turning the metal into hard droplets rather than being absorbed. IDC: smartphones now outnumber basic phones in Europe
Smartphones crossed an important threshhold Thursday after IDC data showed them outselling basic cellphones in Western Europe for the first time. Owed mostly to Apple's iPhone and multiple Android models, smartphones grew 48 percent year-to-year this past spring to hit 52 percent of European phones, or 21.8 million devices. Simple phones dropped 29 percent over the same period to 20.4 million and now made them a minority.

Western Digital, Seagate and Hitachi square off in 3TB hard drive roundup
We've seen 3TB hard drives trickling onto the market for the better part of a year, but it's only now that we're seeing more UEFI-equipped motherboards that can actually handle all that storage capacity. LG rumored purging 30% of mobile staff to stay afloat
LG may have taken emergency steps to reverse its still ongoing losses in its mobile group. A claim in the Korea Economic Daily had LG cutting 30 percent of its non-Korean mobile staff to bring the section's finances above water. Similar steps were on the way for the company's Korean home, tipsters said.

Viewsonic abandons plans for Boxee-powered TV
You may have suspected that something was up after Viewsonic failed to meet its promised "early Q2" ship date for the Boxee-powered TV it showed off at CES, and you would have suspected correctly. GigaOM is now reporting that Viewsonic has indeed ditched its plans for the device, apparently due to a combination of high costs and a lack of interest in Smart TVs from customers. It is still keeping its options open for further down the road, however, noting that it will "stay involved with the various technology developments and consider them in the future as they become available."

Apple has launched a new charitable matching program that will see the company match employees’ personal donations to eligible charities. In an email to employees reprinted by Mac Rumors, Apple CEO Tim Cook announced the program, which will match employee donations to non-profit organizations dollar-for-dollar up to $10,000 per year. FiLMiC Pro is a US$2.99 app that boosts your iPhone video as close to pro quality as it can get. The app allows selectable resolutions (1280x720, 640x480, 480x360) and a variety of frame rates like 30fps, 24fps all the way down to 1fps.
There are a number of great features to get you started. You can focus-lock on any point with your finger and lock the exposure the same way. This prevents the camera automation from "hunting" for the right settings. FiLMiC also offers color bars and a personalized slate.

Well, you don't see this too often. A new phone dubbed the Smart Bar is set for sale in Japan on September 22nd that combines the retro styling of a candybar with a modern 3-inch touchscreen. Apple initiative matches workers' charitable donations
Apple is launching an "matching gift" program for charitable donations, CEO Tim Cook has announced through an internal memo. Beginning on September 15th, Apple workers who donate to a non-profit 501(c)(3) charity can have their funds matched dollar-for-dollar. The limit is $10,000 annually however, and Apple is also initially restricting the offer to full-time US Apple workers, expanding to other regions "over time," according to Cook. The decision excludes much of Apple's retail staff, which is frequently hired on a part-time basis.

JD Power: iPhone staying well ahead in smartphone quality
Apple has managed to keep its significant lead in smartphone satisfaction in spite of improving performance from its Android counterparts. JD Power in a new study saw end users give Apple a score of 838, over 40 points past its spring results and its sixth consecutive spot at the top of the ranks. HTC also improved, but at 801 had garnered at a slightly slower rate.

Viewsonic's $200 ViewPad 7e Android tablet now available for pre-order
Viewsonic has been at the low-cost Android tablet for some time now, and it showed now signs of letting up on that effort at IFA last week, where it debuted its new ViewPad 7e. If that managed to pique your interest, you'll be glad to know that the device is now available for pre-order for $199.99 (though there's still no promised ship date). Android für HP Touchpad schon mit Dualboot und Multitouch

Der Hack um Android auf das HP Touchpad zu bringen macht große Fortschritte. TouchDroid und CyanogenMod 7 sind mittlerweile schon soweit Multitouch auf dem Touchpad aktiviert zu haben, und einen Dualboot-Modus gibt es auch, damit man nicht ganz auf das - eigentlich sympathische - WebOS verzichten muss. TSMC may be ready to build A6 chipsets in early 2012
TSMC will be ready to mass-produce 28nm chips beginning in early 2012, says the supplier's research and development head, Shang-yi Chiang. Apple spending some of its cash in US Capitol
Apple has a large cash reserve and it's using some of the those funds to lobby Congress. Judging by the money that's passing hands, Apple is taking its lobbying efforts seriously.
In the second quarter of 2011, Apple spent a whopping US$790,000 on lobbying. This is more than double what the company spent in the same quarter of 2010 and up $230,000 from the first quarter of 2011.

Twitter: mobile use surging 40% quarter to quarter
Twitter at an event in its San Francisco headquarters gave a rare look into its performance that showed just how vital mobile was to its business. Apple already considering construction of third campus
Apple is already contemplating the prospect of building a third campus, even before construction of the second one gets underway, says Cupertino mayor Gilbert Wong, citing information from Apple executives. Cupertino City Counsel considers environmental impact of Apple campus
The City of Cupertino is holding a public meeting to discuss the environmental impact of Apple's new campus. This meeting is procedural as Cupertino Mayor Gilbert Wong has already said there's no way the city will reject Apple's plan.

ClassCo sought to profit off of the cellphone industry Thursday with a lawsuit (below) accusing larger smartphone makers of allegedly violating patents for caller ID. ESPN's new Monday Night Football deal includes 3D broadcasts, WatchESPN app
Just hours before the 2011 NFL season kicks off, the ESPN and the NFL announced a new eight year extension for Monday Night Football that runs from 2014 to 2021 and most notably to us, includes a provision for 3D broadcast rights. The new deal covers items from new studio programming (beginning this season) to availability of games on the WatchESPN mobile app to the Pro Bowl we still won't watch. Adobe intros Flash Media Server, Flash Access updates
Adobe today announced upgrades to two of its behind-the-scenes Flash components, used by content publishers rather the public. The first, Flash Media Server, has been updated to v4.5, gaining adaptive bitrate streams viewable by both iOS and Flash-equipped platforms. Customers looking to buy an iPhone 4 from Apple's online store will now have to wait 1-3 days for their handset to ship. Gartner cuts PC growth to 3.8% on economy, tablet revolution
Gartner lowered its predictions for growth in the PC industry for 2011 to 3.8 percent on Thursday. The cut was a steep drop from a predicted 9.3 percent and blamed partly on tough economies in Europe and the US, leading customers to hold back. Research lead Ranjit Atwal saw the larger issue as a transition away from conventional PCs, however, and gave particular concern for Microsoft as its core business was losing luster across much of the public.

Apple asks Japan court to ban sale of Samsung phones
In a move that should surprise no one, Apple has asked a Japan court to ban the sale of Samsung phones. Specifically, Apple has filed a suit in Tokyo district court to halt sales of the Galaxy S and the S II, as well as the Galaxy Tab 7. The Cupertino company is after 100 million yen (about $1.3 million as of this writing) in damages in addition to the sales ban.

JPMorgan ups iPad share of tablets to 70.9% in 2011
JPMorgan analyst Mark Moskowitz deflated presumptions of Android's success in tablets with an increase in Apple's projected share of tablets. Having predicted in February that Apple would get 60.8 percent this year, he now thought Apple would get 70.9 percent for 2011 and would still have 62.8 percent in 2012. The assumption that Android tablets would quickly ramp up hadn't panned out, as none had grown to the point of being a major contender.

Adobe rolls out cloud-based Carousel photo service for Apple devices
Looking for another way to store your photos that doesn't involve a shoebox in your closet or a hard drive on your desk? Then you now also have Adobe's new cloud-based Carousel service to consider, which will initially come in the form of apps for iOS and Mac OS X Lion later this month (support for Windows and Android is apparently coming next year). The real selling point here is that your photos are instantly synced across said devices (and you can edit them on each), although that convenience comes at a cost -- the apps themselves are free but you'll be charged $60 a year or $6 per month until January, and $100 a year or $10 a month after that. Das erledigt jetzt zum Beispiel der ScreenCast AV 4, den ihr z.B. in einen Blu-ray-Player einstöpseln könnt und euch so das HDMI-Kabel spart. Diesen Teller mit Sushi konnte man bis vor kurzem auf Flickr bewundern. Die EXIF-Daten weisen das aktuelle Smartphone aus Cupertino als Kamera aus, bei einer Originalgröße von 3264x2448 Pixeln müsste aber eine 8-Megapixel-Kamera das Bild geschossen haben und da wird beim iPhone 4 kein Schuh draus. Außerdem hat die Linse eine Brennweite von 4,3mm, das aktuelle AppleHandy kann da lediglich 3,85mm liefern. Das Bild soll von einem Apple-Mitarbeiter in der Mittagspause aufgenommen worden sein. Foxconn reportedly producing 150k iPhone 5s a day
A report from Taiwan's Digitimes says that Foxconn is churning out the unannounced iPhone 5 hardware at an alarming rate -- over 150,000 units a day. That's crazy, and it means Foxconn is racing to get shipments up to 5-6 million units total by later on this month. All of Apple's contractors are working around the clock as well, funneling components into Foxconn to create the new iPhones. Intel is having limited success getting PC builders' early ultrabooks under the $1,000 benchmark set by the MacBook Air if industry contact updates are accurate. Another World coming to iOS this month
Eric Chahi's classic game "Another World" (also known as "Out of this World," from its US release) is finally coming to iOS at the end of September. BulkyPix will be publishing the title, and controls will come in two flavors, either as full touchscreen controls or through a virtual D-pad. New Mexico's science ghost town: bands won't play no more, too much fighting on the dance floor
Pegasus Global Holdings (us neither) wants to build "The Center" -- an ominously named ghost town on the New Mexico plains. The 20 square mile development will be theoretically capable of housing 35,000 people but will remain deliberately devoid of inhabitants. Instead, it'll be rented out to companies wanting to test their technology in a real urban environment, rather than just testing it out in a real urban environment. Companies can examine things like residential solar panel efficiency, smart traffic systems or the best way to secure wireless networks in dense areas. Foxconn now making 150,000 iPhone 5s per day
Apple's iPhone 5 production is now approaching full steam, the supply chain found late Wednesday. Foxconn, Apple's key iPhone builder, is now believed to be making 150,000 of the new model per day. Sony has unveiled its effort to claim the "world's lightest" title on e-readers with the Reader Wi-Fi PRS-T1, a six-inch model that features a monochrome touch screen as well as Wi-Fi. That's right folks, AMD's A4 APUs are here and ready to take on Intel in a battle for the bottom end of the mainstream desktop market. These dual-core desktop parts pack integrated graphics courtesy of the company's Radeon line. Both also boast a 65W TDP and 1MB of L2 cache. One family, two Find My iPhone adventures
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, an Australian family has recently gone through not one, but two adventures related to stolen iPhones. While on holiday at a Hilton in Fiji, the family's mother, Fiona Donohoe, had her iPhone ripped off by a hotel concierge. In a move worthy of a featured spot on Dumb Criminals, the theft was discovered and the iPhone recovered after the concierge accidentally synced all of his/her own contacts with Donohoe's MobileMe account. After that it was presumably simple to track down the thief, who has been fired from the Fiji Hilton and jailed for six months.

Atari counters the iCade with Arcade Duo-Powered Joystick
Atari and Discovery Bay Games have teamed up to create a joystick-and-button arcade adapter and iPad stand called the Arcade Duo-Powered Joystick, an alternative to ThinkGeek's popular iCade. Made of plastic rather than wood and using the 30-pin connector rather than Bluetooth, the Atari device is more portable but only works with the Atari's Greatest Hits app and nothing else. Mosaid rejects second Wi-LAN takeover as patent houses fight
Mosaid in a statement Wednesday pressed share owners to turn down a second, $480 million Canadian ($488 million USD) buyout offer from Wi-LAN. Following an earlier deal, Mosaid claimed that the cash being offered was "clearly inadequate and highly opportunistic." It was even more so now that Mosaid was managing 2,000 Nokia patents through a takeover of Core Wireless, chairman Carl Schlachte said.

There's a new king atop Sony's line of ES projectors: the VPL-VW1000ES. Presented at CEDIA this afternoon, it bypasses all the beamers Sony's delivered for home use so far -- including the recent VPL-HW30AES and VPL-VW95ES models -- by featuring a stunning 4K resolution, four times that of standard HD projectors based on an all new SXRD panel. Scheduled to go on sale this December it also claims a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio and 2,000 ANSI lumens of brightness that allows it to project on screens of sizes up to 200-inches. IDW releasing comics for iBooks
Most of the comic books released on the iPad and iPhone have been inside of special apps (many of which are run by ComiXology, actually), but here's another option. HTC sues Apple with patents borrowed from Google, Motorola
HTC stepped up its counters to Apple's lawsuits by suing Apple again in a Delaware court. The claim alleges violation of four patents that Google had transferred to HTC's ownership just days earlier, on September 1. The four had originally been granted to Motorola and were the offshoot of the $12.5 billion merger, although Google hasn't closed the deal and would have had to get a separate, voluntary handover.

HTC sues Apple with help from formerly Google-owned patents
There's a fresh new twist in the never ending Apple / HTC patent battle. The Taiwanese handset manufacturer is hitting back against Cupertino using newly obtained firepower: nine patents picked up from Google last week. The patents, which began life under Palm, Motorola and Openwave Systems, were transferred to HTC on September 1st. So much for the whole sitting down and not suing thing.

SFPD starts internal probe on iPhone 5 hunt
SFPD spokesman Lt. Troy Dangerfield stated Wednesday that the law enforcers had launched an internal probe into the conduct that led to a joint raid on a home to find a missing iPhone prototype in July. Details were short but would check into how the police officers who were there assisted Apple's investigators. Sergio Calderon (described as Jose Calderon by CNET) was also discussing matters with lawyers, but whether this involved a civil suit or just a defense wasn't apparent.
