Canon adds AirPrint to Pixma printers
Canon today announced 3 of its all-in-one Pixma printers will now support AirPrint from Apple. The printers are the MG8220, the MG6220 and the MG5320. Canon has posted a web page with more details. Some of the printers may require a firmware update to function properly.
AirPrint is the wireless printing technology Apple introduced in iOS 4.2, offering print services from the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.
Originally, AirPrint was heralded to work with a variety of printers networked to a Mac, but when actually released AirPrint worked with only a handful of HP products.

Weißes iPod touch: Gerüchte verdichten sich
Neben einem neuen iPhone wird Apple wohl auch schon bald sein neuen iPod touch 5G vorstellen. Zwar werden bei der nächsten Generation der iPods keine großen technischen Änderungen erwartet, doch dafür verdichten sich die Gerüchte, das mit Weiß eine zusätzliche Gehäusefarbe zur Auswahl steht.
Schon vor einigen Wochen kursierten Gerüchte, wonach Apple ein weißen iPod touch auf den Markt bringen will. In wenigen Wochen werden wir Gewissheit haben, wird doch für Anfang Oktober ein Apple Special Event erwartet. Hierbei wird neben dem neuen iPhone 5 auch die iPod-Familie ihr jüngstes Mitglied der Öffentlichkeit zeigen. Zumindest war es in den letzten Jahren immer so, dass Apple rechtzeitig vor dem Weihnachtsgeschäft ein neuen iPod platzierte.

comScore: Android up to 19% in Canada, iPhone untouched
Newly unveiled comScore data has shown Android finally gaining significant share in Canada but not necessarily upsetting Apple's position. Google's OS jumped from 12 percent in March to 19 percent this past June. All of that share came at the expense of non-Apple rivals, however, as the iPhone was steady at 31 percent.

Facebook media ambitions scale back, still need outside apps
Facebook's media plans will be scaled down when they finally show at f8 on Thursday, insiders uncovered Tuesday afternoon. Instead of playing on Facebook through a central hub, listeners or viewers will have to launch an outside app. It will still carry over information and use a Facebook sign-on, but AllThingsD understood it would still have to open the third-party app when relevant, such as with Spotify.

Google: iOS Google+ hangouts "coming soon"
Google is pushing out a significant update to its Google+ social network that will improve both its website and mobile versions. For iOS users, the Google+ app is getting Hangout support. Similar to Facetime and Skype, hangouts will let users chat with their friends using the front-facing camera. This feature is already present in the Android version and will be available for iOS soon.

Wooden supports disappear from Fifth Avenue cube
Apple has entered into a new phase in replacing the cube over its Fifth Avenue store, an observer notes. On Tuesday morning construction workers were spotted removing parts of the wooden support frame covering the upgraded cube's glass. The panes are still masked with a protective film, the witness remarks. Access to the store remains open; as in past weeks, people must simply enter through a temporary hallway.

Apple PC competitors request price drop from Intel
Intel is facing increasing pressure from its retail partners to lower the price of its upcoming line of Ultrabook notebooks, according to a report from Digitimes.
Manufacturers like Acer are now asking Intel to reduce the cost of the CPU to help lower the final price of the device. Recently, Intel's hardware partners asked the chip maker to reduce the cost of the Ultrabook by 50%. Intel refused.
These Ultrabooks are designed to compete with the MacBook Air which is available starting at US$1000. Manufacturers realize they need to get below that $1000 mark if they want to compete with Apple's popular notebook.

Foursquare marked its billionth check-in last week by launching a new version of its mobile apps. DigiNotar goes bankrupt after fake certificate hacks
DigiNotar, the Dutch company responsible for issuing security certificates that authenticate websites, has entered into bankruptcy. This come on the heels of of the company being taken over by the Dutch government earlier this month, after it was revealed that company's site had been hacked. LEGO robot helps stress-test iPad app
The developers at Pheromone Lab have been working on a photography iPad app for a client. The client asked them to load test the app by using it to take about 10,000 photos. Since no one was keen to press the shutter button ten thousand times, the gang got creative.

Instagram 2.0 brings 10X larger photos, live filters
Instagram took on many of its biggest requests at once with a new 2.0 version of its app for the iPhone (App Store). The new version has a much more powerful imaging engine and at last captures higher resolution shots, which jump from the original 612x612 to either 1536x1536 on an iPhone 3GS or 1936x1936 on the iPhone 4, ten times larger than before. A new camera interface also now allows for live filters to get a preview of the effect before the shot goes through.

Unreal Engine 3-ready UDK reaches Macs
Epic Games has released a new beta of the Unreal Development Kit, at last bringing Unreal Engine 3 game creation to the Mac. The current iteration of the Unreal engine is a gaming industry standard, used by many major titles like Batman: Arkham Asylum and Epic's own Gears of War series. Spain starts antitrust investigation into Microsoft
Spain has started an antitrust probe against Microsoft after that country's National Competition Commission said it had collected information that could indicate a potential violation. The investigation centers on charges that Microsoft's business units in Spain and Ireland allegedly blocked the sale of software licenses by third parties. Amazon Appstore nun weltweit verfügbar

NPD: Android still tops for future buyers, 44% mull Windows
NPD's Connected Intelligence in a new study showed major shifts underway in smartphone interest that could play into Microsoft's hands, not just Google's. While Android was still the primary choice for users, about 44 percent of those who either had or wanted a smartphone were at least considering a Windows Phone device. Android's main success was with BlackBerry users, where a third were considering defecting to Android for their next model.

We've had a sneaky suspicion all along that T-Mobile would likely be the only major network not playing host to an iPhone 5 launch party this year, but we still kept our heads high because no official denial had been given from the company's C-level. Apple has revealed five additional store openings taking place this weekend. Exceedingly popular iPhone photo app Instagram is celebrating its big (version) 2.0 with the addition of a number of new features. At the top of the list is Live Filters, which let you view images through effects in real-time, before taking a photo. Filters have been sped up post-picture taking as well, as has the tilt-shift function. For the eighth year in a row, Apple has come out on top of the annual American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI). Additionally, no other company got close to touching Apple.

Apple releases new ProApps, Thunderbolt updates
Apple has posted a trio of new software updates, the most important of which are Thunderbolt-related. The Thunderbolt Display Firmware Update fixes unspecified stability problems with Apple's latest product, and apart from the monitor requires a Mac running either OS X 10.6.8 or 10.7.1. A new Thunderbolt Software Update for Snow Leopard is required to use the Thunderbolt Display with the OS, and also fixes compatibility issues with other Thunderbolt devices. Google+ open to all, adds mobile video chat and live streams
Google+ received a shot in the arm Tuesday as Google took it out of its invite-only phase to make it public and push into mobile. The newly opened-up social network now includes video chat Hangouts on phones: any active Hangout works in the same drop-in, drop-out approach as it does on the web with several at a time. Prinzipiell eine feine Idee, die da von unserem Lieblings-Trash-Händler Chinavasion kommt: Handschuhe mit Sensoren in den Fingerspitzen, wodurch dann jede Oberfläche bespielbar wird, leichtes Aufdrücken eines Fingers genügt, um einen Ton zu erzeugen. Acht Instrumente stehen dabei zur Verfügung, außerdem gibt´s diverse Rhythmen. Soweit so gut, aber dummerweise hat eine Oktave auf der Klaviertastatur nicht zehn sondern 12 Tasten, womit dann der angestrebte pädagogische Effekt irgendwie perdu wäre. Fazit: schade aber toll. Apple hits new high in US satisfaction, Windows PCs flat
Apple managed to widen its lead in real-world satisfaction on Tuesday in a new ACSI (American Consumer Satisfaction Index) study for computers. The Mac designer moved up a point in its satisfaction score to its highest yet, at 87 points. Windows PC builders were virtually flat and still about 10 points lower on average, with only HP and its trailing budget brand Compaq moving up a point.

Final Cut Pro X update adds "top feature requests"
Apple will release a major update to Final Cut Pro X, as well as a demo version that new customers can download and try out today. This update address the top user requests, according to Apple's senior director applications marketing, Richard Townhill.

Revolights bringen die Fahrradbeleuchtung auf Vorder- und Hinterrad
Was die Bastler Kent Frankovich, Adam Pettler und Jim Houk da ausgeheckt haben, ist wirklich groß: ihre Fahrradbeleuchtung namens Revolights bringt jeweils das halbe Vorder- und Hinterrad eines Fahrrads zum Leuchten, selbstverständluch vorne Weiß und und hinten Rot. Was in Aktion aussieht wie ein magischer Trick, ist in Wirklichkeit eine schlaue Anordnung von LEDs an den Rädern (jeweils 2 Kreise vorne und hinten), die aufs aktuelle Tempo abgestimmt aufleuchten. Fifth-gen iPod touch said to be 'very minor' revision
The fifth-generation iPod touch will see "very minor" changes over its predecessor when it's announced in the next few weeks, MacRumors claims to have learned. Unreal Engine 3 (finally) coming to the Mac
If you thought the Mac and iOS were already running Unreal Engine 3, you aren't wrong: Epic has been using the legendary gaming engine on Apple products for a while now. Despite promising support, the company hasn't actually released it out to developers -- until now. Anyone turned off by the HTC Pico's blueish guise may be happy to see the phone's dark and serious makeover in these press shots. Now going under the name of the HTC Explorer, the render also gives us our first look at the new HTC Sense Zero skin. Alongside a refreshed bar at the bottom, linking you to the app list and phone, it looks to be a visually lighter skin, hopefully allowing the Explorer's rumoured 600MHz processor to juggle both HTC's home-made interface and Gingerbread with ease. Canon Pixma printers grab AirPrint support for iOS devices
Canon on Tuesday sent word it had brought AirPrint support (link ready soon) to some of its Pixma printers. Its newest all-in-one photo printers with Wi-Fi, the MG5320, MG6220, and MG8220, can all now take print requests from an iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch running iOS 4.2 or newer. The "majority" of Canon's inkjets in the future will also get the wireless printing support, Canon said.

Apple confirms launch of 3G iPad 2 in China
Apple has announced plans to launch 3G models of the iPad 2 in China, which will join existing Wi-Fi options. The new hardware will go on sale Wednesday, made available through Apple's online and retail stores as well as authorized resellers. Prices have yet to be made public though, and Apple's only Chinese carrier partner -- China Unicom -- has yet to acknowledge the rollout. Unicom is in fact the only carrier in the country which can make use of the HSPA 3G supported by the iPad 2.

Google's Android developer blog is warning creators of Honeycomb apps to rework their code for Ice Cream Sandwich or suffer unsightly consequences. The 'problem' with ICS is that it gets rid of the tablet/smartphone divide, such that HC apps designed specifically for tablets will suddenly be allowed to run on small-screen devices. Whiteboard plus paint equals huge iPad at app agency
The above picture was taken in the offices of Appency, a PR firm that helps market and sell mobile apps, including iPhone and iPad apps. It's indeed a big iPad, though instead of a functioning touchscreen, the whole thing is actually a working whiteboard painted onto the wall. Founder Aaron Watkins tells TUAW that the studio moved into its new offices a couple of months ago, and decided to use a substance called IdeaPaint to literally paint a whiteboard on the wall.
Originally, they wanted to paint two whole walls with the stuff, but it's pretty pricey, so instead, design intern Lorin Estes had the idea to turn the whole thing into a giant (to scale, we're told) iPad. Pretty awesome -- though not quite as portable

Samsung may open-source Bada to reduce dependence on Android
Samsung is hoping to open-source its in-house Bada OS to avoid leaning too heavily on Android for its success, sources alleged early Tuesday. The OS behind the Wave 3 and its peers would be accessible to everyone in 2012 to encourage more support and make it a stronger platform. The company would also be hoping to see Bada used for Internet-aware TVs and end up competing with Google TV, WSJ's insider said.

Researchers convert soundwaves into electromagnetic energy, silence no longer golden
Researchers in Japan and Germany have converted energy from soundwaves into electromagnetic energy, trapping a magnetic "spin current" between metal layers. In the experiment, when sound waves are directed at an interface between the thin metal layer and magnetic material, electrical signals are generated at a pair of electrodes attached above. When the soundwaves reach the magnetic material, this creates a spin current that gets picked up by three layers of metal. This is where the exercise class-sounding reverse spin Hall effect kicks in, transforming it into an electrical voltage.

Sphero boasts new look, launch set for later this year
We saw Sphero in action in January at CES 2011, and the company has released some details on the final prototype and an actual release. The little iOS-controlled sphere is still planned for release sometime this year, but it's got a new design that you can see above. Don't worry, it's still a ball, as that blue base there is just for charging and storage. The design is new, and the shell of the ball itself is different from when we saw it. Rasenmäher Robocut von McConnel mäht sich ferngesteuert durch unwegiges Gelände

Dass dieses Gerät Robocut heißt, ist ein wenig übertrieben, schließlich wird der Rasenmäher für grobe Jobs von McConnel ferngesteuert und arbeitet sein Pensum mitnichten automatisch ab. Einerseits. Hierzulande haben wir von Amazons Appstore für Android-Anwendungen nicht viel mitbekommen - was kein Wunder ist, weil der Service nur auf den US-Markt ausgerichtet war. Survey: 60 percent of back-to-school PC purchases are Macs
We've posted before how Apple is not only growing in terms of portable devices, but also in terms of Mac sales. Here's another indicator of that: A survey of 158 college students, all undergrads, says 60 percent of new PC purchases by the group this year consisted of Macs. That's not a huge sample, but it is a representative one, as more and more students are going with OS X-driven computers rather than the old desktop PC. According to the same study last year, Apple held only a 38 percent share, so interest in Macs among this group has almost doubled.

Dish, Blockbuster tease 'stream come true' event Friday
Dish's ambitions for a major Internet movie service were confirmed late Monday after the company sent invitations to a special event for Friday, September 23. Acer Taiwan's president Scott Lin and Compal's equivalent Ray Chen have both put out public complaints that Intel isn't cutting chip prices to let their ultrabooks compete with the MacBook Air. Lin insisted that Acer and other Windows PC builders couldn't get below $1,000 with their ultraportables without a subsidy while meeting the performance targets. His PC firm and others would have to either use slower processors or reduce their marketing, according to Digitimes' account of events.

Survey: Apple winning students, TV losing them
A small survey interviewing 158 students across eight colleges and universities has concluded that students are spending less on technology compared to last year, and bringing their electronic arsenal with them to school -- but leaving TVs at home, in a dramatic drop from last year. Intel Ivy Bridge supports 4K, preps for 'retina' Macs, PCs

Intel: Ivy Bridge GPU to support 4K resolutions
Color us unsurprised that Ivy Bridge is destined to be faster and smaller than its predecessor, but unbeknownst to us is an interesting tidbit concerning the upcoming architecture's GPU. The revamp will support resolutions in excess of 4K (topping out at a maximum of 4,096 x 4,096) -- a sizable jump from the WQXGA (2,560 x 1,600) limitation of it's Sandy Bridge's forebearer -- opening the door to all sorts of resolution independent goodness. Mac 101: Format choices for USB flash drives
The overwhelming majority of USB flash drives you buy are going to come in one of two formats: FAT32 or NTFS. The first format, FAT32, is fully compatible with Mac OS X, though with some drawbacks that we'll discuss later. If the drive comes formatted in NTFS, which is the default file system for Windows, you're going to want to re-format the drive because Mac OS X can't write files to NTFS-formatted volumes (at least not without a bunch of extra work that's beyond the scope of this article).

Re-engineered EvoCam 4 released, adds HTML5 support
As mentioned last week, Evological has completely re-written and re-designed EvoCam 4 to be a modern all-Cocoa application, now requiring Mac OS X 10.6 or higher. The webcam software now features H.264 video with AAC audio, as well as RTSP-over-HTTP and HTTP live streaming using HTML5, allowing EvoCam broadcasts to be viewed on mobile devices such as the iPhone and iPad without the need to install a viewer app. The program can also be used to set up networked cameras.

Cellular South joins in lawsuits to stop AT&T, T-Mobile deal
Opposition to AT&T's proposed takeover of T-Mobile galvanized Monday after Cellular South sued AT&T to stop the deal. The dispute contends that the merger would "substantially lessen competition" and put too much power in the hands of the top two US carriers, AT&T and Verizon. New bomb-sniffing laser could be used to locate IEDs
We've already seen lasers with the potential to spot explosives, and now a team of researchers is focusing its beams on roadside bomb detection. Chemistry professor Marcos Dantus of Michigan State University has led the production of a laser that has the "sensitivity and selectivity" to accurately identify improvised explosive devices. This particular bomb-sniffing laser emits short pulses that make molecules vibrate and longer pulses used to "listen" to the resulting "vibrational cords," these so-called cords are used to distinguish telltale molecules from the harmless sort. Lenovo rises to 3rd largest PC maker on Acer's fall
Lenovo has taken advantage of Acer's recent poor performance to leapfrogged Acer to become the third-largest computer brand worldwide -- largely on the strength of sales in China and the U.S., industry watcher IHS reports. More shots show different iPhone 4S/5 prototypes, both old
A follow-up snapshot has shown a different iPhone prototype to the one showing its A5 chip as well as shed light on the possible age of the examples. The new image, purported to be of an "iPhone 4S," shows a device with the old, pre-release white iPhone 4 case and parts that are claimed to be for the iPhone 5. Despite MacPost clams, though, it appears to be of a different generation as it has visibly different battery markings and, as it's inverted, makes it impossible to gauge if it's an A5 or an A4 chip.
