Motorola rumored to be hard at work on high-res, 4:3 Ice Cream Sandwich tablet
Apparently, when Motorola was trying to figure out why its Xoom has struggled so mightily in against the iPad 2, the company didn't focus on its high starting price or slightly heftier hardware. Instead, it decided the issue was the screen -- in particular the format -- and rumor has it that Moto is working on a new tablet (probably not the Xoom 2 we've glimpsed) that ditches the 16:9 ratio for the more square 4:3 found on Apple's slate. Lodsys now going after apps with More Apps buttons

New Netflix, NBCUniversal deal announced; extra $6 a month buys some old eps of The Event

Judge doesn't accept Apple call for sped-up Samsung case
Apple's lawsuit against Samsung will not be sped up, as ruled by Judge Lucy Koh of the US District Court for the Northern District of California. According to Florian Mueller, the ruling relates only to a very small subset of the whole lawsuit. This is an indication that Apple will not get a preliminary injunction when it comes to some patents and products.

Apple nears 11% PC share in US as Acer plummets to 5th
Apple has managed get almost 11 percent of computer market share in the US, IDC said in a preliminary estimate on Wednesday. Mac shipments shot up nearly 15 percent year-to-year in the spring to put Apple at third place in the US with 10.7 percent and 1.92 million Macs. Much of that growth came at Acer's expense, as the Taiwan company's overdependence on netbooks and failure to cope with the iPad saw its shipments drop by more than a quarter, sinking it from third place a year ago to fifth place, with 8.5 percent.

360 MacDev Conference registration now open
360|MacDev has opened up registration for its next Mac developer conference in Denver, Colorado. Originally, they had wanted to schedule something this year, but due to conflicts of various kinds, the date has been moved out to next February, in 2012. That's a ways away, but it'll just give you lots of time to prepare, right? The early registration fee is in effect until September 9 or until they sell through the first 50 tickets, so if you're set on going already, now's the time to sign up.
I haven't been to a 360|MacDev event, but we did visit the 360|iDev conference a while ago, and it was full of great information and networking around the iOS developer community. I'm sure the Mac side of thing

TUAW TV Live: iPad apps extravaganza
Well, with that headline I've finally acheived a life goal -- writing a TUAW headline with the word "extravaganza" in it. Today's TUAW TV Live is going to be all about iPad apps, except for the parts where I'll be talking about Google+, opening some boxes of hardware that are awaiting review, and maybe talking a little bit after all about an upcoming OS update.

Monster unveils remade Heartbeats by Lady Gaga
Beats by Dr. Dre, owned by Monster, has just announced the released the Heartbeats by Lady Gaga in-ear headphones. They replace the original product of the same name, and thus carry the 2.0 moniker. Apple to reduce international Mac costs in upcoming refresh?
International prices for MacBooks, MacBook Airs and Mac minis should drop with the upcoming wave of refreshes, some non-US retailers are claiming. Although 9to5Mac is not providing specific details, the cuts could range in scale from slight to significant. Some Mac models are expected to lose "more than the equivalent of $100" off their pricetags.

She's either incredibly exciting or is acquainted with plenty of people that are, because over the course of twelve years she's collected enough interesting texts to publish a book about them. Amazon 9-inch tablet due by October with two new Kindles
A potentially far-reaching leak Wednesday has given many of the details of Amazon's tablet plans. The Android slate should have about a nine-inch screen but won't, however, have cameras. News: Apple, others sued over GPRS data transfer technology

GPNE sues Apple, RIM, Nokia, others over GPRS networking
Apple, Amazon, Nokia, Research in Motion and several other companies are all violating patents related to GPRS networking, a new lawsuit alleges. Sony brings new VAIO Z to US at twice MacBook Air's price
Sony on Wednesday afternoon rolled out the new VAIO Z to the US. The 0.66-inch thick, 2.5-pound, Thunderbolt-equipped ultralight is ported over largely intact from its European debut with a few additions for the switch over. Bluetooth keyboard support appears to be heading to your Apple TV

Microsoft plans 75 new stores, 100m Windows Phones a year
Microsoft COO Kevin Turner during his presentation at the Worldwide Partners Conference on Wednesday set out ambitious plans both for Microsoft's retail stores and for Windows Phones. Police adopting iPhone-based facial-recognition device
Police in the U.S. may soon have a new mobile tool to aid in the identification of criminals. It's called MORIS, Mobile Offender Recognition and Information System, and includes both a retinal scanner and camera to scan suspects from as far as five feet away. The system is powered by an iPhone which attaches to the device. When fully assembled, it weighs 12.5 ounces.
MORIS will replace conventional identification procedures which require an officer to take a picture, download it to a computer and run facial recognition software on the image. RIM aims to launch seven smartphones with BlackBerry OS 7 in 'the coming months'

Video Time Machine for iOS (hands-on)
What's the first thing that comes to mind when the subject of time travel comes up? If you're like us, you probably think of flying DeLoreans or malfunctioning hot tubs; maybe even the HG Wells chair with a brobdingnagian spinning wheel on the back. RIM look: brilliant but reactionary, stuffing sales channels
A new retrospective of RIM from anonymous, former executives has painted an image of a company with a long-term difficulty anticipating phone trends. Trouble anticipating demand for personal-oriented smartphones reportedly not only extended to just after the iPhone launch but as far back as 2005, BGR said. Foxconn to reportedly build all iPad 3 units
Foxconn is using its production muscle to keep Apple's iPad 3 manufacturing contracts to itself. This contradicts an earlier report that claimed Apple was shopping around for a second manufacturer like Pegatron to assist with iPad 3 production.
According to this new report from Digitimes, the Hon Hai subsidiary has told Apple it doesn't need any help and can handle the expected volume of iPad 3 orders. Don't feel bad for competitor Pegatron, though. It supposedly has a contract for over 10 million iPhone 5 units and is vying for the iPad 4 and 2012 notebook/desktop orders from Apple.

Adobe and Sony create contest to put Air apps on Android tablets
Normally, we don't cover contests, but this Air App Challenge from Sony and Adobe does deserve some special attention. Why? Well, for one, Air hasn't exactly taken off quite like the Flash makers had hoped -- especially in the mobile space. Virgin Mobile hikes data fees, plans throttling in October
The US branch of Virgin Mobile is hiking the prices on two of its three Beyond Talk plans, according to an announcement. Although in all cases data will be unlimited, the option with 300 voice minutes is being pushed from $25 to $35 a month. The 1200-minute option is likewise going up $5 to $45, but the fully unlimited plan is being reduced $5 to $55. A $10 fee for BlackBerries is being dropped.

RIM in the aftermath of its shareholder meeting was told that its deal to drop a leadership challenge was just temporary. Northwest & Ethical, which had put forward a motion to force a split between the board chairman and CEO roles, said the BlackBerry maker had six months to prove that Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis had a need to lead both the board and the overall company at the same time. Lodsys claims patents cover cross-promotional app links
Lodsys is now claiming that its patents cover cross-promotional links in apps, not just in-app purchases, according to one developer. The creator of iFighter 1945, EpicForce, remarks that several weeks ago, it received a letter stating that a "Get Full Version" link in the game violates a Lodsys patent. "The 'Get Full Version' link is actually for the purchase of Super Laser: The Alien Fighter," EpicForce writes. "This is just a 'cross promotion' and I think almost every developer is doing it. Gameloft recently released a new iPad book-app, Warplanes: A History of Aerial Combat (US$6.99). This app is follow-up to Gameloft's earlier book-app, War in the Pacific. This latest offering includes detailed information on 43 historic war planes including popular bombers like the B-52, fighters like the F-15 and reconnaissance airplanes like the SR-71 Blackbird.
You can view a 3D model of the plane, browse vintage photographs, read detailed specs and even watch a video of the plane in action (though not all planes have a video). Editorial: Netflix was too cheap before, but now it's just wrong
Yesterday Netflix did something pretty big: it cut the umbilical cord on its streaming video offerings. What was once a funny little niche offering, a rag-tag collection of canceled TV shows you never watched and '80s movies you never rented, had grown into something big, something that still wasn't quite great but was legitimately very good. Apple matched its ITC complaint against HTC from Tuesday with a matching lawsuit. The new lawsuit claims HTC violates four patents that have already been used in the dispute, including one for "portable computers" as well as programming for touchscreen scrolling, touchscreen displays for things such as telematics, and a two-sided touchscreen panel. What analysts think about Apple's iPhone sales
Apple is announcing its quarterly earnings on July 19 and analysts are prepping their sales estimates for the big day. Philip Elmer-Dewitt of Apple 2.0 compiled a handful of these projections which range from a high of 20.25 million from Nicolae Mihalache of Traderhood down to a low of 15 million from Charlie Wolf of Needham.
The average estimate falls at 16.9 million units which is a 101% year-over-year increase and a slight drop from the 18.6 million sold last quarter. In four years of iPhone sales, DeWitt estimates Apple has sold over 125 million handsets.

No rush to judgement in Apple v. Samsung
U.S. District Court Judge Lucy Koh doesn't share Apple's interest in expediting its federal lawsuit against Apple. Yesterday she decided to deny a motion to shorten time of a subset of the entire litigation. Foss Patents says that this denial suggests that Judge Koh has doubts about Apple's entitlement to a faster process.
Foss Patents goes on to provide a nice overview of Judge Koh's recent decision and how it fits into the big picture. In brief, Apple filed a complaint against Samsung in April, and then amended that complaint two months later. Apple was later granted early access to some Samsung products, while Samsung was denied access to some early Apple products.

iTunes Connect undergoes downtime ahead of Lion
iTunes Connect is officially scheduled to undergo maintenance today between 9AM and 4PM Pacific time, developers reveal. The service represents the backend of iTunes, the means by which people submit audio, video and applications. Apple is cautioning app developers to avoid making pricing changes during the downtime, since that will cause an app to disappear from sale until the maintenance is over. At that point an app should return with its new pricetag.

Local governments inspire app developers with contests
Cities like New York, Washington D.C. and San Francisco want developers to write mobile apps that use city data. These cities have made their data public and, sometimes, hosted contests to encourage the process.
The New York State's Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has jumped on this bandwagon and is offering US$15,000 in cash prizes for apps that use the MTA's databases. This data includes information about platforms, elevators, turnstiles and station agent booths within the subway system. Both NYC and the MTA use ChallengePost, a contest delivery platform used by the federal government, corporation and non-profit companies. Motorola rumored making iPad-ratio tablet with 2048x1536 LCD

Apple hat für heute Abend/Nacht ein Wartungsfestern für das «iTunes Connect»-Portal angekündigt. Über das «iTunes Connect»-Portal können u.a. Entwickler neue Apps in die App Stores einreichen und die App-Informationen bearbeiten. Während dem Wartungsfenster heute Abend soll jedoch lediglich die Preisanpassung nicht funktionieren. Weiter nennt Apple jedoch auch die Möglichkeit, dass während dem ganzen Wartungsfenster (ab 18 Uhr MESZ) iTunes-Kunden aus der Schweiz unter Umständen keine App-Käufe mehr tätigen können — ebenfalls davon betroffen könnten Kunden der Stores in Australien, Japan, Mexiko, Norwegen und UK sein.

Pegatron's would-be iPad 3 production has supposedly been squeezed out by Foxconn. Occurro is, I would say, an above average space-based dual stick shooter for the iPhone. It doesn't offer much more than an arcade experience, as you pilot a small ship around the screen with one thumb while shooting in any direction with your second thumb. Heute Morgen haben wir von einem Gerücht berichtet, nachdem noch diese Woche neue MacBook-Air- und Mac-Pro-Modelle von Apple lanciert werden sollen — passend dazu gab es Modellnummern der künftigen Macs. Das Gerücht wurde von 9to5Mac in die Welt gestellt und wurde nun ebenfalls von 9to5Mac korrigiert: Vier der genannten Modellnummern sollen keine Mac-Pro-Modelle, sondern ein neues, weisses MacBook und drei neue Mac minis sein: «MC914LL/A – J59, BEST» (Weisses MacBook), «MC936LL/A – J40, ULTIMATE» (Mac mini Server), «MC815LL/A – J40I, BETTER» (Standard Mac mini) und «MC816LL/A – J40, BEST» (Schneller Mac mini).

Hands-On: Überarbeitetes HP TouchPad 4G für AT&T (Video)

Das HP TouchPad wird vom US-amerikanischen Mobilfunkunternehmen AT&T in einer überarbeiteten Version unter dem Namen TouchPad 4G vermarktet werden. Wobei 4G hier nur HSPA+ und nicht LTE bedeutet. Äusserlich bleibt alles beim Alten, eine weiße Variante ist nicht geplant. Statt wie bisher 1,2GHz werden aber demnächst ein 1,5GH-Prozessor und ein HSPA+ Radio unter der Haube stecken. Apple verteilt neue iOS 5 Beta
Apple hat am Montag registrierten Entwicklern eine dritte Vorabversion vom kommenden iPhone-Betriebssystem «iOS 5» verteilt. Neben der «iOS 5 beta 3» gibt es auch eine dritte Beta von iTunes 10.5, welche für die Synchronisation von mit «iOS 5 beta 3» bestückten iPhones, iPads, iPads 2, iPod touches und Apple TVs zwingend notwendig ist. Ebenfalls verfügbar wurden Xcode 4.2 Preview 3 und eine Golden-Master-Version von Xcode 4.1.
Aus der neuen Beta sind bisher ein paar Neuigkeiten bekannt geworden, so bietet iOS 5 neu bereits beim Einrichten ein neuen Bildschirm bei dem bereits nachgefragt wird, ob die Lokalisierungs-Dienste global ein- bzw. ausgeschalten werden sollen. Desweiteren wird auch erklärt, dass auch bei WLAN Lokalisierungs-Daten übermittelt werden können. Average App Store prices rise 14 percent in 2011
According to analysis from Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster, app prices on the App Store have risen by 14 percent in 2011, compared to an 18 percent decline in 2010. A divisive iPhone add-on from BI2 Technologies is about to reach police in a way that could challenge civil rights. The MORIS case, already used in the military and a few limited areas, will let officers snap a photo of a person's face from up to five feet away and automatically cross-check it against a police database to see if it's a known suspect or if the person has a criminal history. HP plans huge July 17 TouchPad store push, defends app count
HP's recently appointed webOS head Stephen DeWitt in an interview Tuesday night explained that the company was effectively having a second, real launch for the TouchPad on July 17. Andy Lees says no to Mango on Windows tablets
Microsoft's Andy Lees quashed dreams of Windows tablets running a Mango-style OS during a talk at the company's Worldwide Partners Conference today, saying the mobile operating system would conflict with the outfit's ideas of what makes a slate. iPad as Kinect part 2: Air Touches
What can you do with an iPad 2 with its onboard cameras and it's fairly able CPU? Quite a lot, it turns out. When TUAW first looked at Greg Hartstein's Air Touch project, it required a completely dark room and could only handle a single measure of distance based on lighting levels.
Things have evolved since then. Hartstein provided this video that shows how using a tracking element attached to his hand (you can see it slightly in the video when his hand is at an angle to the camera) simplifies the interaction and provides a far greater range of possible interactions. Unfortunately, the YouTube video is slightly glitchy (the original version we received is not, but when we uploaded it to YouTube we got that weird pixelation in the beginning).

IDC: tablet shipments drop 28 percent in Q1 2011

EA to acquire PopCap for $750 million
EA has confirmed that it has established an agreement to acquire PopCap, a game publisher best known for mobile titles such as Plants vs. Zombies and Bejeweled. The buyout will cost EA at least $750 million, which includes $650 million in cash and $100 million in stock. PopCap will also be entitled to additional cash compensation based on EA's future earnings through the end of 2013.

Firemint's Agent Squeek becomes Spy Mouse, gets a new trailer
It's been interesting watching the development of Firemint's next iPhone game -- I saw it in action way back at GDC 2010, but back then it was just a prototype without a name or even anything more than a few mechanics. More recently it was revealed as Agent Squeek, and looked like it was coming together as a worthy followup to the studio's other big hits, Flight Control and Real Racing. Study: 34% of iPhone owners mistakenly think they have 4G
A fresh Retrevo study has revealed that many iPhone and BlackBerry users are confused about the network speeds of their phones. About 34 percent of iPhone owners and 24 percent of BlackBerry owners believe they already have a 4G phone, even though neither fits even the loosest definitions of the technology. Barclays: APPL may meet June quarter targets after all

33% of iPhone owners think their phones already have 4G service
With Verizon rolling out its advanced 4G LTE network, and AT&T deploying a similar 4G system, you'd think that these faster 4G services would be something iPhone owners are clamoring for. Not true, at least according to a survey from Retrevo.
The consumer research firm says that 1/3 of iPhone owners actually think their phones are already on a 4G network, even though, as we all know, Apple isn't offering a 4G capable phone yet. Maybe it's the fact that the latest iPhone is called the iPhone 4, but the Retrevo study indicates Blackberry owners are also confused, or at least 24% of them are.
