Pioneer's iOS-aware AppRadio ships for $399
Pioneer shipped and priced its AppRadio car head-end unit. The iOS-aware AV equipment is now in stock immediately at Amazon and other outlets. Pricing is better than Pioneer's original sub-$500 goal and sees it sell officially for $399, although a handful of stores are selling it for slightly less.

Apple granted broad patent for 'portable multifunction devices' with multitouch screens
Avid watchers of tech know that Apple is almost as good at requesting patents (though, its record of defending them is somewhat less impressive) as it is at actually creating compelling products. Apple issues cease-and-desist to Amahi over 'app store' name
Apple has issued a cease-and-desist letter to Amahi over the term "App Store," according to the latter party. The Amahi Home Server software allows a user to stream media across a network and/or share files remotely. One feature is its extensibility, made possible through downloadable add-ons. Verizon data plans leaked, unlimited users will be grandfathered in
Android Central says it's nabbed an official document laying out the brand new Verizon data plans scheduled to take effect next month, and there's good news for those of you currently using an iPhone on Verizon with an unlimited plan: It looks like you'll be grandfathered in.
We weren't quite sure if that would happen yesterday, but if this document is real, Verizon will be going the way of AT&T and allowing those with unlimited data plans to keep them (presumably as long as they're not changed or added on to any other deals).
Elsewhere on the deals, the smartphone plan will start at 2GB for $30 a month, up to 10GB bandwidth for $80 a mon

Vizio, your favorite low-cost TV leader introduces... a light bulb (video)
It's a busy week for Vizio. The budget TV manufacturer flaunted its flashy new tablet in front of our cameras yesterday, and had us hopping across town this afternoon for a chance to go hands-on with its latest entrant into a mysterious brand-new product category (for Vizio, at least). Reps were mum on details, so we had no choice but to return to the CEA LineShows in NYC to see what was up. Google: we'll bring Wallet to iPhone if it gets NFC
Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt in a speech at the Cannes Lions ad festival on Wednesday was more definite about the possibilities of Google Wallet on the iPhone. He effectively promised a port of the currently Android-only mobile payment system if the iPhone gained NFC support to use it. "Most vendors" have already said they planned to move to NFC, Schmidt said in a presentation caught by the FT and others.

Ireland's Wallace High School launches the country's largest 1:1 iPad initiative
After collaborating with Apple for a year, Ireland's Wallace High School has launched the country's largest 1:1 iPad initiative. The school's principal, Deborah O'Hare, said in a press release that she and her staff had been letting students bring portable devices into the classroom.
In time, the faculty and administration realized that if they could identify a single device that would be appealing to students, useful to the teachers and understandable by the parents, they'd be onto something.

Tim Cook spotted at China Mobile headquarters
Apple COO Tim Cook made an appearance at China Mobile's headquarters on Wednesday morning, according to a reporter for local publication First Financial Daily. Cook was spotted walking with seven or eight other people, a claim backed by a photo of him in the China Mobile lobby. The exact reason for his visit is unknown, although it was likely related to expanding iPhone sales.

Congressional bill would require clear info on 4G speeds
Democratic Congresswoman Anna Eshoo has proposed a bill that would require carriers be forthright about increasingly confusing 4G terminology. The Next Generation Wireless Disclosure Act would require that carriers publish details about their minimum 4G speeds, their coverage, and the reliability of the network. Eshoo hoped to set a framework for "what 4G speed really is" and make sure customers knew what they were getting.

Roadshow from Fetch Softworks downloads videos to iPad for offline viewing
Longtime Mac users are very familiar with Fetch Softworks. The company has been around since 1989, and is named after the classic Mac FTP client -- Fetch. Now Fetch Softworks has branched out with a new addition to the family named Roadshow.
Roadshow (free download, $4.99 in-app purchase to remove ads and enable unlimited video) isn't a Mac app, and it's definitely not an FTP client. It is a fun iPad app that answers the question "How can I download online videos for viewing on my iPad at a later time when I'm offline?"

While "announced" via a nondescript text document earlier this week, we still had no clear indication of what Nokia's second MeeGo device would truly look like just a day ago. Samsung Series 5 lands in Europe June 24th, starting at 399 euros
The US has already tasted its first piece of the Chromebook pie, and now Samsung's serving up a slice to our friends across the pond. That's right, the Samsung Series 5 will grace European soil starting this Friday, and will set our European brethren back €399 (or £349) for the Wi-Fi model and €449 (or £399) for the 3G version. The Chrome OS laptop will be available in the UK, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, and Italy to start, and is said to be on the way to other countries in the next few months. 65 percent of connected apps run iOS in UK
The GSMA released its April Mobile Metrics report, which shows that 65% of devices using connected applications in the UK are powered by iOS; about 30% of devices run Android, and a meager 1% use Symbian. This report measures the number of wireless devices that have internet-connected applications. It does not take into account users who fire up their phone to make phone calls and play local games only.
A broader metric from comScore shows a similar trend with the iPhone grabbing 27.6% and Android snagging 24.7% market share in April. Symbian slides into the number three slot with 23.6% of the market, and RIM is number four with 18.1% market share.

iPhone the top-selling phone at 58% of AT&T, Verizon stores
The iPhone is the most popular phone at US carrier shops by a wide margin, BTIG found in a study [reg. required]. Apple had the top spot at 58 percent of 250 AT&T and Verizon stores. About 20 percent of stores said Android was in a dead heat with the iPhone, and just 21 percent cited Android as being the frontrunner.

Dutch net neutrality first in EU, mobile operators side-eye KPN
KPN may have shot itself in the foot, but the Dutch parliament certainly helped pull the trigger. iPad 2 wins tablet display quality shootout
The iPad 2 has bested its competition in DisplayMate's latest comparison of display quality among several popular tablets. Although the second-generation iPad lacks the pixel density of Motorola's Xoom or Asus' Transformer, the display calibration company suggests Apple's tablet wins in nearly every other category. Netherlands first to require mobile net neutrality in Europe
The Netherlands has become the first European country to embrace network neutrality. Dutch lawmakers have passed legislation that prevents the nation's Internet service providers from charging customers extra for, or blocking access to, online-based services such as Skype. To date, the US is the only other country to have enacted net neutrality provisions.

Google TV 2.0 "Fishtank" begins private beta testing
Google is reportedly previewing a significant update to its Google TV platform, which is referred to by the monicker "Fishtank." The Google TV 2.0 private beta, which is said to be limited to just 50 developers, is built on Android 3.1 reworked for television presentation. The UI includes a Clock app, the Live TV feature, and a Chrome build that appears to be a closer match to the desktop utility rather than the smartphone browser.

iPhone the top smartphone at both AT&T and Verizon
An informal survey of 250 Verizon and AT&T retail stores by BTIG suggests the iPhone is the top-selling handset at both wireless carriers, reports All Things D. The Verizon iPhone has been available for five months and 51% of stores surveyed ranked the Apple smartphone as its #1 seller. Another 38% of Verizon stores say the iPhone is tied with an Android handset, usually the 4G Samsung Droid Charge or the HTC Thunderbolt.

Nokia N9 to ship in Sweden on September 23rd, saith awkwardly translated release

Lodsys requests 2 months to respond to Apple
A few weeks ago, Apple filed a motion to intervene in Lodsys' controversial lawsuit against a handful of iOS app developers. Lodsys was required to respond to Apple's request by June 27, 2011, but the company has asked for a two month extension. If a judge approves this extension, Lodsys will have until August 27 to respond to Apple's intervention request.

MightyText pushes messages and incoming call alerts to your computer (hands-on)
Have you ever missed an extremely important phone call or text because you were too busy finishing those TPS reports on your personal computing machine? There's a Chrome add-on for that. We went hands-on with a new extension (and accompanying Android app) called MightyText, a free notification service launched today that syncs your phone's texts and calls to your computer in real-time. The idea is crazy simple, yet adds unyielding convenience: incoming SMS messages appear on your screen as a pop-up, giving you the option to read and reply to them without touching or even looking at the phone. Final Cut Pro X expected to get missing features in updates
Final Cut Pro X will get some missing features in future updates, says video production blogger Philip Hodgetts. Having spoken with Apple, he claims to have learned that Pro X will, for instance, eventually get the ability to import Final Cut Pro 6 and 7 projects. Games at Google revealed in job posting, takes a stab at social gaming

GitHub, probably the best-known hub for both public and private repositories, is now available for the Mac.
The Mac version will hunt for repositories already on your machine, then allow you to manage them. You can view commit history, make changes, automatic updates and more. It also tracks all of your GitHub repositories and can clone them to your machine.

Philips Fidelio Speakers with AirPlay hands-on (video)

This year, AirPlay is in, and Philips was on hand to demo five new wireless speaker models at the CEA LineShows in NYC, set to roll out beginning later this month through the holiday season. Lodsys requests two extra months to respond to Apple
Patent holder Lodsys has asked a Texas court for an extra two months in order to respond to Apple's motion to intervene, according to new documents. Without the filing Lodsys would have had to respond by June 27th, but may soon have until the end of August 27th. The company writes that it is not looking to delay proceedings, and has in fact "conferred with counsel for Apple and Apple does not oppose the relief requested herein."

Apple II owners and enthusiasts in the greater Los Angeles area must clear their calendar this Saturday night. The folks from the Machine Project are trying to organize an evening concert featuring the iconic Apple II.
Starting at 8 pm PT on June 25th, a 16-step sequencer developed by Jason Torchinsky will be used to elicit beautiful music from a group of Apple II machines. The original Apple II did not have a built-in sound synthesis chip and sent a precision click to the speaker to generate sound. The result is a very mechanical tone that many find annoying. As you can imagine, the music should be interesting.

Nun wird die Gerüchteküche durch einen Bereich auf dailytech.com weiter angeheizt, denn darin meldet sich ein ehemaliger Apple-Manager zu Wort, der eine entsprechende Markteinführung in naher Zukunft in Aussicht stellt. Die Rede ist dabei von einem Flatscreen, welches Apple durch einen “führenden TV-Hersteller” fertigen lassen will.

Preview Hands-On: Marvell Kinoma Play, Marvells offene App-Plattform

Im Februar hat Marvell das erste Mal von Kinoma gesprochen, einer "neuen offenen App-Plattform", die für Handys, Desktops und Tablets dasein soll. In New York haben sie jetzt eine Version von Kinoma Play vorgestellt, die allerdings momentan noch auf Froyo aufsetzt. Die Version für die Desktops lief dann auf einem Simulator unter OS X, es ist also noch ziemlich am Anfang, aber Marvell scheint es durchaus ernst zu meinen. Verizon's next big LTE push coming July 21st
You can't stop Verizon's nationwide LTE push -- and even hoping to contain it seems like a bit much to ask these days. The company made its last major 4G service rollout just under a week ago, and now it's looking to do the same next month, adding a slew of new markets to its coverage umbrella and expanding in a few existing locales on July 21st. Best Buy Music Cloud promises cross-platform, mobile iTunes
Best Buy in an uncharacteristic step jumped into the cloud music space on Wednesday with Best Buy Music Cloud. The service lets users share their iTunes music collections either over the web or through mobile apps, including Android, BlackBerry, and iOS users. Much akin to Amazon Cloud Player or Google Music Beta, listeners have to upload music themselves, although a desktop app will automatically push new iTunes additions to the cloud space.

El Paso Apple Store to fill US, Mexican retail gaps
Apple is planning to open a new store in El Paso, Texas, city building permits show. The outlet will be based on the ground floor of the Cielo Vista Mall, which is found alongside Interstate 10 on the east side of the city. It will specifically be located next to a Gap clothing store, and the permits give an estimated construction cost of $500,000. It could open in early 2012 based on construction schedules.

Software-based Pogoplug brings OneView, updated iOS app
Cloud Engines adapted its strategy for the Pogoplug Wednesday with a new software-based version of its remote storage feature. Its app lets Mac and Windows user share the contents of their systems to nearly anywhere online over the web without needing a Pogoplug drive. A new trick for the category, though, is OneView: the method lets users pool their storage from multiple devices and see it as one, consistent library with no duplicates.

At first blush, the Nokia N9 is everything I'd ever wanted from the company: a smartphone with a competitive spec sheet, exquisite industrial design, and a touch-centric UI that looks to push things forward with the introduction of its own idiosyncratic ideas. Apple wins key iPhone technology patent
Apple has won the rights to a critical US patent for the iPhone. The company now has patent number 7,966,578, documenting a "computer-implemented method, for use in conjunction with a portable multifunction device with a touch screen display, [that] comprises displaying a portion of page content, including a frame displaying a portion of frame content and also including other content of the page, on the touch screen display." Lytro camera sensor would allow focus-free shooting
Newcomer Lytro has unveiled a new camera technology that promised to revolutionize how cameras capture shots. Its new sensor captures light fields independent of the direction of the camera and avoids the need to focus the shot at the time it's taken. Judge denies Samsung's request to see iPad 3, iPhone 5
As expected, Samsung's request to examine the iPhone 5 and the iPad 3 was denied by Judge Lucy Koh in a ruling handed down yesterday. The judge expressed the need for fairness, but said Samsung overstepped the line when it asked for devices that are unannounced and likely in the prototype stage. Apple also asked to view Samsung devices, but the bulk of those products were already on the market or formally announced by the Korean manufacturer.

AR technology has been getting seriously powerful recently, but we still need smart little ideas like this to keep us interested. RIM drops BlackBerry PlayBook sales goals by more than half
RIM has quietly cut its sales expectations for the BlackBerry PlayBook after its disappointing sales from the spring, those in the supply business said Wednesday. It had planned for as many as 2.4 million of the tablets in its summer quarter but had now pared that back to between 800,000 and 900,000 units. Digitimes claimed RIM had an optimistic prediction of 2.4 million PlayBooks for its most recent quarter but, at 500,000 units, wasn't going to reach its next goal.

Ford adds SYNC AppLink to ten more 2012 models
Ford has added its SYNC AppLink connectivity technology to ten more vehicles in its range for the 2012 model year. Among the new models to get the technology include the Ford Fusion, Fiesta, F-150, Super Duty, Expedition, E-Series, Shelby GT500 and the Ford Mustang. A fresh round of leaks early Wednesday supported Apple's plans for the next iPhone but also had unusual details about a future iPad. Judge shoots down Samsung motion to spy on iPhone 5, iPad 3
Samsung late Tuesday was given a quick rejection of its motion to look at future iPads and iPhones. Judge Lucy Koh agreed that both sides had equal chances at discovery but that Samsung didn't have a right to look at unannounced prototype versions of products. Apple discontinues Final Cut Express, reportedly ends Server too
Now that some Tuesday's Final Cut Pro X is available, additional details about Apple's pro video edition solution are available.

Twirdie is an interesting game that's got one of the most fascinating premises I've ever heard, but it unfortunately gets bogged down in an implementation that's quite a bit less than fun. The basic idea (which you may have heard before -- the game's already been around the Web once) is that you're playing golf, and you use Twitter search results to hit the ball. The more times a word you punch into the game has been mentioned live on Twitter in the past 60 seconds, the farther your ball goes.
The idea is interesting, and it works (though I was playing on a Wi-Fi connection -- I assume 3G or even Edge Twitter searches would be much slower). But the problem is that it's not actually fun. You don't line up an angle or anythi

Compromised account leads to massive Bitcoin sell off, EFF reconsiders use of currency
Bitcoin, for those not aware, is a completely digital currency -- one where exchanges between individuals are largely anonymous and secured through cryptography, and one that has seen its hype-meter go off the charts in recent months. That, inevitably, has had some people waiting for a fall, and it took a big one this week. While things have since bounced back, the value of the currency on the so-called Mt. Gox exchange dropped from around $17.50 to just one cent in a matter of moments during the early hours of June 20th -- a drop that's since been attributed to a compromised account. Computer-Konzept M-Gram verlangt nach neuer Technologie

Die koreanische Nachwuchsdesignerin Seungha Yoo hat wohl erstmal alles richtig gemacht mit ihrem Entwurf eines zukünftigen Mobil-Computers, schließlich fragt man sich unwillkürlich, wo auf dem Bild der Rechner zu finden ist. Die Scheibe ist es nicht, die ist bloß die Solar-Dockingstation. Das M-Gram getaufte SciFi-Konzept ist vielmehr das pilzförmige Teil in der Mitte, dessen oberer Teil einen Durchmesser von 8 Zentimeter haben soll. Der Daten-Pilz soll nach dieser Designfantasie ein Hologramm-Display haben und per Gestensteuerung bedient werden. Bleibt eigentlich nur zu sagen: Ran an die Forschungsbulletten, liebe Wissenschaftler!

You know that microSD card slot that's been laying dormant in your Motorola Xoom? Provided you don't reside in the US, that'll be getting activated soon as part of the tablet's Android 3.1 update, which is starting to roll out now and should have all of Europe covered within the next few weeks. Swisscom: Neue Datenroaming-Angebote ab Juli
Wie die Swisscom in einer Medienmitteilung schreibt, stehen Swisscom-Kunden ab dem ersten Juli zwei neue Datenpakete für das Surfen im Ausland zur Verfügung. Das Angebot «Data Travel 24h» ist für Kurzaufenthalter gedacht und bietet ein Datenvolumen von 50 Megabyte, welches innerhalb von 24 Stunden genutzt werden kann. Für längere Auslandaufenthalte empfiehlt Swisscom das Angebot «Data Travel 30 days», welches 200 Megabyte für 30 Tage beinhaltet. Die beiden Angebote gelten für Kunden mit Swisscom-Abo und sind gültig für Länder des EU-Raumes, die Preise liegen bei 24.- Franken für «Data Travel 24h» und 74.- Franken für «Data Travel 30 days».

Seit Monaten spricht die DigiTimes schon von Amazons erstem Vorstoß in den Tablet-Markt. Heute hiess es nun, dass es von Quanta Computer gebaut werden soll und zwar mit einem Texas Instruments Prozessor (keinem von NVIDIA) und einem Display von Wintek (nicht EIH). Laut DigiTimes will Amazon schon 2011 vier Millionen Stück absetzen, der Launch soll bereits im August erfolgen. California's zero-emissions rebate program ironically runs out of green
Californians will have to look elsewhere to start receiving cash back for buying eco-friendly vehicles, as the California Air Resources Board has just announced that its ever popular rebate program is no more for the time being. CARB, as the board also goes by, launched its Clean Vehicle Rebate Project (CVRP) in March of 2010 with initial funding of over $11 million to go around -- but we knew it wouldn't last. According to the the CVRP website, the program has issued a little over $7 million worth of rebates thus far, with the rest pending or reserved for the already existing EV-owners.

Study: most phone buyers in no rush to upgrade to 4G
A new Morpace study (PDF) has shown that 4G isn't having a significant impact on decisions whether or not to choose a smartphone or carrier. When asked to choose important factors in picking a smartphone, 65 percent picked price as an important factor. Network capabilities were second at 58 percent but included coverage, not just speed.

Senior iCloud product manager John Herbold leaves Apple
John Herbold, a senior product manager for Apple's iCloud service, has updated his LinkedIn profile to show that he's no longer with the company in Cupertino. Flickr's Camera Finder has officially confirmed Apple CEO Steve Jobs' claims at WWDC that the iPhone 4 was the most popular camera. Sonnet adds SATA 3 host cards for PCIe, ExpressCard
Sonnet Technologies is now offering its own brand of SATA Revision 3.0 host controller cards, the Tempo PCIe 2.0 for desktop and the two-port Tempo ExpressCard/34 or single-port Tempo Edge ExpressCard/34 for notebook computers. The unknown prospective buyer of Hulu may have been Yahoo. A scoop late Tuesday said that the early search firm, at least at one point in recent memory, had raised the possibility of buying Hulu. Verizon unlimited data to end in July
Bad news, Verizon users. The rumors were true, and Verizon will be ending its unlimited data plan this July. According to AllThingsD, Verizon confirms it's moving "to a more usage based model in July," with exact details to come later on.
Unfortunately, it's unclear what Verizon still plans to do -- the company has said that its unlimited plans were always only for a temporary time, though AT&T of course grandfathered its unlimited plans in (and I'm still using one, though I can't ever change it or add things like hotspot or tethering). It sounds like Verizon wants to shut down the plans for good, but there may still be a chance for someone on on an unlimited plan currently to keep it.

Monsoon's Vulkano adds direct-to-mobile recording
Monsoon's Vulkano line of television add-on boxes that function as both a DVR and internet-connected media server (akin to a combination of TiVo and Slingbox) have added a Direct option to their Mobile Recording feature, which includes full DVR controls including Pause, Rewind and Fast Forward. Russian eclipse enthusiasts launch floating globe to shoot the moon
That globe, which launched June 15th, was attached to a weather balloon, and apparently carried with it a GPS / GSM tracker, two GoPro cameras, two Canon cameras, and one Buzz Lightyear figurine. The mission? Capture last week's lunar eclipse. Lucky for us, the mission was successful and both the cartoon astronaut and the accompanying film were successfully recovered. Speaker wire is expensive if you buy it at retail, cheap if you just use a spool of electrical cable, but always, always an eyesore. Sure, you can pull it through the drywall, hide it behind some curtains -- or you can just go wireless. That's the option Cue Acoustics will enable with its PS1 bookshelf speakers, shipping this August. Dev Juice: Help me fix my UIView animations
Dear Dev Juice,
I'm having an issue with UIView animations, that I'm struggling to describe in keywords, so I can't find anything helpful with Google. The problem is that I can't seem to work out how to make a UIButton move relative to the bottom of the parent view, as I shrink the parent view.
I've managed to get the other views inside the parent to scale with an autoresize mask, but I cannot for the life of me work out how to make the bottom (or even center) of my button clip on to the bounds of the view.
Not sure if that accurately paints the picture, and I'm not sure if it's relevant, but I'm making a widget for NotificationCenter. Hope you can help, I'm tearing my hair out.

Real Software has updated their flagship product Real Studio 2011 to release 2, updating both the Web and Desktop editions of their application development environment for Mac OS X, Windows, Linux and the web. Mobile devices surpass computers for Wi-Fi usage
Mobile devices have reportedly surpassed computers in terms of Wi-Fi usage in the US for the first time since 2010, according to data collected by wireless networking company Meraki. In the first half of last year, Windows and Mac machines represented 64 percent of the devices that accessed Wi-Fi networks monitored by Meraki. Transitioning to the same period in 2011, however, computers were responsible for just 36 percent of Wi-Fi connectivity.

Google Chrome to get plugin-free, real-time voice and video
Google is in the early stages of giving Chrome a completely add-on free approach to live audio and video chat, the company's Henrik Andreasson said this weekend. The company plans to integrate the WebRTC protocol first in its open-source Chromium project before rolling it into the regular Chrome browser. The step should give the browser both high- and low-bandwidth audio formats, iSAC and iLBC, as well as use the VP8 codec behind WebM for video.

Leica's new M9-P digital rangefinder taps the till at $7,995 -- the same price the original M9 commanded when it was released in 2009 -- but you don't stay in the business of making pricey cameras for nearly a century without doing something right. Toshiba's 21.5-inch DX1215 all-in-one can accommodate even the largest fingers
Clearly sick and tired of watching all of the fun other companies have been having with their all-in-ones, Toshiba this week announced the DX1215, the company's first entry in the space for the US market. The 21.5-inch touchscreen desktop has two USB 3.0 ports (and four of the boring old 2.0 variety), an HDMI port, 1TB of storage, and built-in Onkyo speakers. Study: iCloud could get 76% takeup, iMessage about 73%
A new study by RBC analyst Mike Abramsky suggested Apple could get rapid adoption of the core services it rolled out with iOS 5. A full 76 percent of the 1,500 iPhone owners asked were either somewhat or very likely to use iCloud. Its value as online storage was likely to partly nullify one of Android's advantages and improve the "loyalty and stickiness" of iPhone users that might have otherwise jumped ship.

A new rumor has resurfaced the frequent claim that Apple would have a self-branded TV set. A supposed Apple executive claimed the Apple TV hardware would be integrated into TV sets built by a "major supplier" but badged with Apple's logo. The Israeli government has asked Apple to ban a pro-Palestinian application, named ThirdIntifada, from the App Store. The government has expressed concerns of the app's content, claiming the articles and news stories, written in Arabic, encourage violence against Israel. Hulu reportedly looking at sale after mystery offer
Two insiders said Tuesday night that Hulu was considering selling itself after having been given a buyout offer. The source hadn't been identified but, according to CNBC's Julia Boorstin, was "not Google." Hulu hadn't decided what to do about the offer other than exploring its possibilities.
