Nothing like a little software update to get the weekend started right right? Spotify lands Universal deal, US launch close
Spotify has landed what might be its most important deal for the US, sources claimed Friday. A deal was reportedly struck with Universal this week and left just Warner to come onboard. That deal was said by AllThingsD to be closer than before, although it wasn't expected to start anything until July at the earliest.

UK GQ subscribers will get iPad version for free
Conde Nast has told Pocket-lint that UK subscribers to its print edition of GQ will get the iPad version of the magazine for free. Currently the UK GQ Magazine iPad app is a free download, but users have to pay £2.40 per issue. However, Conde Nast is working with Apple to bring annual subscriptions and more a la carte options to the UK edition of GQ on the iPad. When it does, subscribers to the print edition will get the iPad edition for free.

Windows XP users will finally need to upgrade to enter the iCloud
This got a bit lost amid all the WWDC 2011 hubbub earlier this week, but Apple quietly delivered a bit of bad news to steadfast Windows XP users with its iCloud announcement. Unlike its MobileMe service and recent versions of iTunes, which have somewhat surprisingly supported Windows XP all this time, use of Apple's iCloud service on a PC will require either Windows Vista or Windows 7. RIM shareholders call on CEO, chairman roles to split
RIM's co-founders faced a minor investor mutiny on Friday after a shareholder group, Northwest & Ethical Investments, called on the company to decouple the roles of chairman and CEO. A filing revealed that it had asked for co-CEOs Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis to no longer automatically assume board chairman roles along with their control of the company itself. They called on the company to make the chairman an independent board member.

HTC leveraging window before next iPhone release
HTC may top Apple as the #1 smartphone vendor in the US for the next few months, according to a report in DigiTimes. The Taiwanese handset maker is selling two new and popular Android models, the Thunderbolt for Verizon and the Inspire 4G for AT&T. Bisher war es nicht möglich, auf dem iPhone, iPod touch oder iPad Videos in 1080p-Qualität anzuschauen. Doch mit iOS 5 wird sich das vermutlich ändern, denn mit iOS 5 kann man nun 1080p Full HD-Videos auf das iPhone, iPod touch und iPad synchronisieren und auch erfolgreich wiedergeben. redsn0w gains first jailbreak for iOS 5 beta
The unofficial iPhone Dev Team has released the first version of redsn0w to support jailbreaking the iOS 5 beta. The utility currently supports the iPhone 3GS, iPad 1, third- and fourth-generation iPod touch and GSM and CDMA versions of the iPhone 4. The code is in an extremely early state however, and is recommended only for people wanting to develop apps for jailbroken hardware.

Carriers snubbing Windows Phone at stores, deal irony to MS
An experiment in trying to buy a Windows Phone device has suggested that US carriers were neglecting Microsoft's platform. A visit to stores for each of the four WP7 carriers showed that the demo booths were either improperly kept or didn't have devices at all. Most of PCMag's questioning saw reps steering the buyer towards Android, even when the buyer explicitly stated an intent to get a WP7 phone.

Microsoft talks Xbox Live integration in Windows 8, says service will be 'pervasive' across devices
Microsoft's already brought Xbox Live integration to Windows Phone 7, and it looks like you can count on some similar, if not deeper, integration in Windows 8 as well. T-Mobile ad illustrates Angry Birds' immense popularity
One app that has grown from an iPhone hit to a worldwide phenomenon is Rovio Mobile's Angry Birds. Whether you're a fan of knocking over pigs and structures by flinging birds, or go berserk when you hear the Angry Birds theme music, you have to admit that the popularity of what was originally a simple iOS game it pretty amazing. Now T-Mobile is capitalizing on Angry Birds fever with a clever YouTube video titled Angry Birds Live.
A human-scaled mockup of the Angry Birds world was created in a square in Barcelona, with lucky participants using the game on a smartphone to launch birds on their castle-smashing journey. iTunes still growing faster than peers at 7 years old
A breakdown on Friday showed that iTunes was not only growing quickly even over seven years but faster than some longstanding platforms. New MacBook Air production rumored to begin this month
MacBook Air fans who are anxious to have the latest Intel Sandy Bridge chips in their thin and lovely laptops don't have much longer to wait. Wall Street analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, in a conversation with Apple Insider, noted that Apple has placed orders for nearly 400,000 MacBook Airs containing the Core i5 and Core i7 chips.
Slightly over half of the new MacBook Airs being produced this month are expected to be the 11.6-inch model, which has proven to be a bit more popular than its 13.3-inch sibling due to the $999 price for the entry-level device.

Two iPhones to fly on last space shuttle mission
The final shuttle mission will be a first for the iPhone. When Atlantis flies to the International Space Station this summer it will carry two iPhones to test an app, SpaceLab for iOS from Odyssey Space Research. The Houston company makes spacecraft guidance software. When the iPhone 4 came out, the company's programmers realized it could be used for a space-based experiment to test a vehicle's positioning and orientation with the smartphone's new internal gyroscope, camera, and other sensors.

One of the more interesting iOS 5 features revealed this week during the Monday keynote was seamless integration with Twitter. Now a report published by All Things D shows that other social networking sites also appear in iOS 5, including Facebook, Flickr, LinkedIn, and Myspace.

iTunes Match not coming to the UK until 2012?
Music collectors in the US will be able to subscribe to Apple's iTunes Match service this fall, but it looks like our friends across the pond will have to wait a little longer before lofting their libraries up to the cloud. Display shortage forces Samsung to lose its competitve edge over the iPad 2
Samsung may be forced to fatten its tablet devices due to a display shortage. The Korean company gleefully proclaimed its revised Galaxy Tab line was thinner than the iPad 2 and repeatedly showcased the tablet's anorexic design.

ASUS: we're only non-iPad tablet maker keeping sales up
ASUS chairman Johnny Shih claimed second place in the tablet market based on what he knew of its own Eee Pad Transformer numbers and the industry. He along with CEO Jerry Shen expected the Eee Pad Transformer to be the second-most popular tablet after the iPad and would push pas expectations with 300,000 shipped in June. The Wi-Fi Sync feature in iOS 5 is a direct plagiarism of an app rejected by Apple in May last year, the latter's creator suggests. Greg Hughes remarks that Apple has not only used the same name as his app, but also an extremely similar logo, with a Wi-Fi "wave" circled by two arrows. After the app was rejected from the App Store, Hughes submitted it to the Cydia store, where it has done brisk business.

Current stock of Verizon iPad 2s being pulled by Apple?
Several posts on Apple's support forums suggest Apple is withholding shipments of a select number of Verizon iPad 2s. Details are sparse but shipments en route from China are apparently being called back to their destination.
9to5Mac was also reportedly told by a store employee that Apple has provided a list of serial numbers for Verizon iPad 2 models. All shipments from June 6 to June 11 are supposed to be scanned for these blacklisted devices. If any are found, they are sent back to Apple. This one store has already sent back 100 tablets.

Studenten an der Universität Adelaide haben dieses spannende Gefährt namens EDWARD gebaut (Electric Diwheel With Active Rotation Damping). Das Elektrovehikel wird mit einem Joystick gesteuert und schafft 40 km/h Spitze. 380,000 new MacBook Airs entering production in June
Apple has placed production orders for 380,000 new-model MacBook Airs this month, says Concord Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. The claim is based on industry checks, which also allegedly indicate that about 55 percent of the units will be 11.6-inch systems. Apple hat offenbar in den USA in den letzten Tagen damit begonnen, zahlreiche iPad 2 für Verizon zurückzurufen. Bereits auf den Weg zu Kunden befindliche Geräte wurde bei FedEx wieder zurückgerufen und auch Apple Stores haben damit begonnen, einen Teil der Bestände zurückzusenden. MIDI Hat macht elektronische Musik endgültig zur Kopfsache

UAE carrier claims LTE iPhone 5 in late 2011
A United Arab Emirates carrier, Etisalat, is claiming that the iPhone 5 will be shipping later this year, according to Gulf News. "We are in talks with most smartphone manufacturers including Apple on the rollout of the 4G handset, iPhone 5 later this year," says the carrier's chief corporate communications officer, Ali Al Ahmad. "As the first telecom organisation to roll out the 4G network, LTE, in the Middle East, we have already started talking to them for the handsets and chipsets in them."

Japan's Ministry of Defense is pretty good at its hovering drones, but we're not entirely convinced that this one will be fit for purpose. The RC reconnaissance scout reminds us of a spherical Iain M. Banks Culture drone, which is neat, except that this one's more conspicuous, dies after just eight minutes and was constructed not by an intergalactic artificial consciousness, but by a bunch of geeks who went foraging for parts in Akihabara. Galaxy Tab 10.1 ad jabs iPad's lack of Flash as sales spike
Samsung kicked off the launch of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in the US with a new ad savaging Apple as well as strong early sales. A new two-minute commercial (below) points out the usual advantages of a tablet but singles out the iPad 2 for a comparison, saying that a user can "see Flash run," like on the Galaxy Tab, "or not" on Apple's tablet. Studie: 75% der Deutschschweizer haben mobiles Internet, 6% ein Tablet
Einer neuen Studie zufolge verfügen mittlerweile drei von vier Deutschschweizer über einen mobilen Internetzugang. Ein Drittel der Befragten verfügt über ein Smartphone — und es dürften bald noch viel mehr sein, denn jeder Dritte plant zudem ein Kauf eines Smartphones. Auch Notebooks sind sehr beliebt. Laut der repräsentativen Befragung besitzen jedoch erst ca. 6 Prozent der Deutschschweizer ein Tablet. Ebenfalls 6 Prozent nennen weder ein Smartphone, noch ein Notebook oder ein Tablet ihr Eigen.
Das Telefonieren ist auch bei Smartphones die «Anwendung Nummer 1» und wie die Studie zudem herausgefunden hat, soll sich Herr und Frau Deutschschweizer mit durchschnittlich 10 Apps zufrieden geben — bevorzugt kostenlos, trotz allfälliger Werbung. Volvo kicks off C30 Electric production for 2012 delivery, promises V60 plug-in hybrid for the US later
Not enough electric vehicles in the market, you say? Well, at least there'll be a new candidate rolling out from Volvo next year. Earlier this week, the car maker announced that it's just started producing the C30 Electric (as test-driven by us back in March), the task of which is split between the company's Belgium and Swedish plants. If all goes well, Volvo will deliver 250 or more units to leasing customers across Europe (Sweden, Belgium, the Netherlands and Norway) by the end of 2012. Low Mac Pro, Mac mini server supplies suggest pending refresh
Supplies of Apple's Mac Pro and Mac mini server lines are reportedly constrained, indicating a refresh is likely in the near future. According to 9to5 Mac, a source indicates these two product lines should see updates within the next month or so. 9to5 Mac doesn't give any info on the current supply status of the non-server versions of these two Mac models, but it's a safe bet that the standard and server lines will see updates at around the same time.

IDC senkt Wachstumsprognose für Windows Phone 7
IDC hat seine Wachstumsprognose für Microsofts Mobilbetriebssysteme Windows Phone 7 und Windows Mobile gesenkt. Sie werden 2011 demnach einen Marktanteil von 3,8 Prozent erreichen werden. Durch die Zusammenarbeit mit Nokia soll der Anteil 2015 auf 20,3 Prozent ansteigen. Im März hatten die Marktforscher noch angenommen, Microsoft werde dieses Jahr 5,5 Prozent und in vier Jahren 20,9 Prozent erreichen.

Largan hints at ramping 8-megapixel camera for next iPhone
Largan Precision in a shareholder meeting Thursday gave more official hints that it was supplying eight-megapixel iPhone cameras. CEO Lin En-ping said that camera lens orders had been increasing to a number of Largan's clients, including Apple, HTC, Nokia, and RIM. Most were upgrading from five to eight megapixels, so those later orders were growing faster, he said.

Remember when Google Voice assigned a number to your account with no option to port or integrate with Sprint? Oh how much simpler things were way back in Q1. When those new features first popped up, you were given a 90-day grace period to receive calls and texts to your old number after making a change. Apple motions to intervene against Lodsys, save developers
Apple stepped into Lodsys' lawsuit against developers by filing a motion to intervene (below) on Thursday. The request reflects Apple's earlier letter and argues that the terms of its developer agreements cover the licensing for the patents. It pointed out that many iPhone and Mac app writers simply couldn't know about the patent licensing deal or have the cash to defend themselves, a weakness which many have accused Lodsys of exploiting.

The European Southern Observatory (ESO) has just released the first batch of shots taken by its VLT Survey Telescope (VST), and, given the results, we'd say the thing's got a bright future in photography. Gewöhnlich machen wir ja einen dezenten Bogen um genetische Experimente, aber an dieser Kuh kommen wir einfach nicht vorbei. Die geklonte Kuh mit dem eher technischen Namen, Rosita ISA, aus dem argentinischen Labor ist erst vor ein paar Tagen via Kaiserschnitt auf die Welt gekommen und soll eine Milch produzieren, die der Muttermilch von Menschen ähnlich ist und antivirale sowie antibakterielle Eigenschaften haben. Das wurde über zwei menschliche Gene bewerkstelligt. Ob wir unsere Kinder dem anvertrauen würden, ist allerdings eine ganz andere Frage.

Blick über den Tellerrand: Windows Phone 7 und Android
Satte vier Jahre lang präsentierte sich das iOS als der von Windows 3.0 bekannte Programmstarter, der Startscreen konnte nicht z.B. um Kalendereinträge erweitert werden, über die Verwaltung von Notifications durfte man herzhaft lachen, der Dokumentenaustausch zwischen Apps, sowie ein geräteübergreifender Sync, waren ebenfalls nicht zu sehen und von Magazin-Apps, die im Hintergrund neue Ausgaben herunter laden, waren wir ebenfalls noch weit entfernt. iOS 5 wird mit vielen dieser Mängel aufräumen: Eine Zentrale für Benachrichtigungen, Hintergrunddownload für Magazine, zentraler Cloud-Storage (samt Einbindung für andere Apps und Push von Änderungen), eine endlich brauchbare Kamera-App mit Hardware-Auslöser, S/MIME-Mails, Inbetriebnahme des Geräts und Einspielen von Updates ohne Rechner, sowie ein Wifi-Sync mit iTunes klingen wie ein großer Wurf. Es ist allerdings offensichtlich, dass sich Apple hierbei sowohl bei vielen Apps als auch den Ideen der anderen Plattformen - vor allem Android - bedient hat:

Apple hat seine Regeln zu In-App-Abonnements stillschweigend geändert, wie MacRumors als erster Blog bemerkt hat. BinCam posts photos of your trash on Facebook, shames you into recycling (video)
We're not sure how comfortable we are with everyone online being able to examine our, as the Brits would say, "rubbish." Google may have developed Android rival to BBM, iMessage
Google has at least at one point been developing an equivalent to BlackBerry Messenger and Apple's iMessage, an insider mentioned Thursday. Details of the system were few, but it's implied it would be much more than just the existing Google Talk and other IM apps. Apple server lineup refresh looming
Apple looks set to refresh its server lineup with news that supplies for its existing products are constrained. 9to5Mac is reporting that retailers are struggling to get new orders for both the Mac mini server as well as the Mac Pro server, with no new shipment date being supplied. If true, June is shaping up as a bigger than usual month for new Macs. There is also an expected Macbook Air refresh enroute, which will likely launch at the same time or just after the launch of Mac OS X Lion.

Intego introduces Backup Express app on Mac App Store
Intego has launched new backup software for the Mac, Intego Backup Express 1.0. The app will back up specific or all files from a User Folder, as well as other disks and volumes where the user has the proper permissions, and can be used to keep folders or volumes in sync across two Macs. The program supports user-created backup scripts, incremental and versioned backups, and exclusions for files, folders and file-types among other features.

Wi-Fi Sync developer says he was 'fairly shocked' by Apple's similar Wi-Fi Sync feature
Wirelessly syncing a smartphone is hardly a new idea, but the developer of the Wi-Fi Sync app for iOS devices apparently thinks Apple's similar new feature in iOS 5 -- also called Wi-Fi Sync --is just a little too close to his for comfort. As you may recall, Greg Hughes submitted his "Wi-Fi Sync" app to Apple for App Store approval back in May of 2010 and was ultimately rejected, although not before he says he was told that Apple's engineers were "impressed" by his effort -- he then made the app available in the Cydia store, where it's been downloaded more than 50,000 times at $10 a pop. Two iPhones to fly into space on last shuttle mission
The space shuttle Atlantis' final mission into space on July 8, 2011 will also mark a first. Specifically, the first time an iPhone has entered outer space. Two in fact, meant to carry out specially-designed experiments.

AT&T announces free public Wi-Fi at 20 NYC parks
Residents of New York City will now be able to enjoy free public Wi-Fi at 26 locations in 20 public parks throughout the New York City area, from Staten Island to the Bronx. Netflix, Foursquare, and LinkedIn Android apps expose your password
Here's a little tip for app developers: encrypt everything, especially passwords. Security firm viaForensics fed some popular iPhone and Android apps through its appWatchdog tool and found that Netflix, LinkedIn, and Foursquare all stored account passwords unencrypted. Since the results were first published on the 6th, Foursquare has updated its app to obscure users' passwords, but other data (such as search history) is still vulnerable. UK won't get music portion of iCloud until 2012
This is sure to disappoint our UK readers, but it looks like you'll have to wait until "at least" the first quarter of 2012 to take advantage of the music portion of Apple's iCloud service, according to a spokesman for the Performing Right Society (PRS). The spokesman told The Telegraph that Apple was in a "very early stage" of talks with major UK record labels, thus the iTunes Match feature of iCloud Apple announced on Monday wouldn't be coming to the UK this year.

IDC predicts Android at 44% by 2015, Windows past iPhone
IDC in a long-term prediction Thursday expected Android to stay in front in market share over the next four years but also that Windows Phone would claim second place. Google would move from 38.9 percent to 43.8 percent by 2015. Nokia's deal with Microsoft, however, would see all Windows phone platforms grow from just 3.8 percent today to 20.3 percent, just slightly under what the outgoing Symbian platform had this year.

Readers in the UAE and other countries will be happy to know that FaceTime is working again on iPhones in the Middle East under the latest iOS 5 beta. As you may recall, when Apple introduced FaceTime in iOS 4 many carriers in the Middle East refused to allow FaceTime on their networks. Convert your iPad 2 into a low-rent Kinect
So yesterday, I was chatting on a developer e-mail list about how you can use basic statistics to find the most prevalent color in a camera frame.
One thing led to another, which in my case meant sample code followed by -- hey, this is kind of cool. Maybe I should put it in App Store. (Thanks go to Roland Gröpmair, who provided me with the on-screen buttons you see on the screen shot.) Which then led to a flurry of coding, submission to app store, and chatting with some dev buddies on IRC afterwards about how I built this thing.
