Nao robot grabs a head-mounted camera, puts your photographic skills to shame

You see, herein lies the problem. At a glance, Nao looks humane. Even kind. In fact, it's bruited that he's helped on a few missions in his day. But underneath, he's a cold-blooded talent snatcher, and thanks to a little push from one Raghudeep Gadde, he might just capture your vacation in a manner that's superior to your own. As the story goes, this here scientist at the International Institute of Information Technology in Hydrabad, India, converted the humanoid into quite the shooter. He strapped a camera on its dome, and then programmed it to follow a pair of iron-clad photogra

Apple coughing up $8 million to Personal Audio in iPod playlist settlement

Ah, the Eastern District of Texas. Home to tumbleweeds, free range cattle and boatloads of patent trolls. Personal Audio, a patent licensing company with a highfalutin' facility in Beaumont, Texas has become the latest outfit to claim victory over a major CE company, with Apple being asked to hand over $8 million to settle a tiff involving iPod playlists. Bloomberg reports that a federal jury in the Lonestar state found that Cupertino's iPod players infringed on patents for "downloadable playlists," right around two years after Personal Audio initially filed the claim for a staggering $84 million. We're told that the

Kingston Wi-Drive wireless storage for iOS review (video)

With nearly 350,000 apps and counting, the iPhone's maximum capacity of 32GB doesn't allow you to even scratch the surface of the App Store's catalog. Throw in an HD movie, some TV episodes, hundreds of tracks and a few thousand photos, and you'll be chewing through those available bytes in no time. Most manufacturers compensate this limitation by including a microSD slot for additional storage, but not Apple -- you're stuck with that original capacity until you're ready to upgrade to a new device. Luckily, for those who need more storage now and don't mind paying for it, AirStash

Microsoft video subscriptions get Zune label, go past Xbox

Microsoft is planning a subscription video service that would go beyond the live Xbox TV it promised during its E3 keynote, insiders uncovered Friday. The service mentioned to The Daily would be badged as a Zune service much like the existing pay-per-title store and compete with one of Microsoft's frequent partners, Netflix. The service would "most likely" not be locked to the Xbox and would show up on Windows Phone 7 and Windows PCs.

Apple back-to-school promo more effective than Microsoft's

Global Equities Research analyst Trip Chowdhry made a contentious claim Friday that Apple's back-to-school promo was showing signs of being much more effective than Microsoft's. Despite Microsoft giving away free Xboxes with PCs, research in an investment note from GER showed that 80 percent of incoming students were buying Macs, not Windows systems. Trends were up for online-only colleges and universities, while returning students later into their studies were very interested in getting iPads, Chowdry said in AppleInsider's copy of the note, which didn't mention th

Apple made to pay $8m to Personal Audio in iPod patent suit

Apple saw a rare instance of a direct loss in a patent dispute Friday after Eastern Texas District Court Judge Clark issued a ruling that it should pay $8 million for allegedly violating patents. Personal Audio won the one-time payment of damages after the court determined that Apple's support for downloading playlists on the iPod and iPhone had violated two generic patents, one for an "audio program player including a dynamic program selection controller" and another for an "audio program distribution and playback system." Crescent's Immersive Digital Entertainment VR: it's like a Virtual Boy that you wear

From what we've gathered in the video just below the break, the graphical capabilities aren't terribly impressive on Crescent's Immersive Digital Entertainment VR system, but really -- who cares? It's a motion gaming solution that you wear. On your head. When placed in the proper scenario, it gives gamers a full 360 degree space to interact in, with an array of HD motion capture cameras making the virtual reality that much less virtual (and in turn, that much more reality). Nokia Perks leaked, ready to take on Groupon (video)

If you're looking to score deals and discounts online you've got plenty of choices -- Groupon, LivingSocial, GiltCity, Google Offers -- and yet, Nokia seems to think the world needs one more such service. The sleuths over at ZOMGitsCj spotted a video on Vimeo from the struggling handset maker (since removed) introducing Nokia Perks. The premise is pretty simple -- pop over to perks.nokia.com (currently offline), browse for deals and coupons, and click save on any you care to cash in. The discounts you pick are automatically sent to your phone and, just like Groupon, all you need to do is show the barcode to the r

Electronic Instant Camera at least gets the 'electronic' and 'camera' parts right (video)

It's hard to imagine in this era of instant electronic gratification, but patience used to be a virtue, and sitting still for three or so minutes while a magic box printed up an image of our likenesses probably didn't seem like all that much of a chore. Niklas Roy, who gave the world a set of robotic curtains last year, is offering up the arguably mistitled Electronic Instant Camera, a throwback to those days, requiring its subjects to sit still as it prints their black and white image onto receipt paper. Due to its paltry internal storage (1KB), the camera can only remember a single line at a ti

3D printed toy features the runner from Canabalt

It's no Angry Birds toy, but I like the idea of this Runner figurine. It features the little guy from the popular iPhone game that spawned a genre, Canabalt. Not only does the resemblance to the little pixelated guy shine right through, but the figure is actually 3D printed in color, and then UV coated to hold the whole thing together. Pretty cool. Voxelous has it on sale right now for $14 along with a few other indie gaming stars, though supplies are limited. What other indie iPhone games need figures like this? I wouldn't mind having a printout of my favorite

Kinect hack promises you'll wear flowery skirts, and you'll like it (video)

Don't be shy now: which of you doesn't love raiding your mother's closet and trying on her paisley dresses and velour tracksuits? That's more or less the idea behind Virtual Dressing Room, a Kinect hack that taps into the clandestine thrill of sneaking into other people's boudoirs. Unlike some other shopping hacks we've seen, the app goes beyond just pilling on 2D pieces, but uses 3D models so that the items mold to your limbs, with the shadows and creases in the virtual fabric changing as you preen for the camera. That all comes courtesy of a special physics engine, while the app itself was written in C# along w

Dell's Windows tablet codenamed Peju, packs Core i5

Dell's delayed Windows tablet has been given a codename and hard specs in an unusually vocal and detailed blog leak. Called the Peju or possibly the Latitude ST, the 10-inch slate would be an aggressive rival to ASUS' Eee Slate that eliminates some, though not all, of the weaknesses. Although it would still have a Core i5 processor, Dell Peju Insider claims the 5,500mAh battery would get about six to eight hours of real battery life versus just two for the 12-inch ASUS tablet.

Sony MiniDisc Walkman to stop spinning in September (video)

Aside from with a handful of stateside early adopters (and a few million others in Japan) eager to embrace any new technology, Sony's rather extensive line of MiniDisc Walkmans never had a chance to dominate the portable audio market. But for one reason or another, the company kept up production of the optical player / recorder combos for nearly 20 years, after the first Sony MZ1 launched in Japan in September of '92. With a countless selection of more affordable solid-state alternatives available today, however, it's certainly not shocking to see good ole MD go the way of the

Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cables banned by HDMI Org

HDMI Org, licensor of the HDMI standard, has demanded that Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cables be taken off the market because they are "unlicensed." According to TechRadar, the cables fall afoul of HDMI licensing standards which state that any cable with a male HDMI connector at one end must also have a male HDMI connector at the other end. Anything else doesn't meet the standards and therefore cannot be sold. This doesn't affect the sale of cable adapters, like the Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter sold on Apple's site, because said adapters have a female HDMI connector that still requires a s

IDC: tablets slumped in early 2011, Nook Color led e-readers

IDC in a study took apart the tablet and e-reader markets early this year. The tablet market saw an early 28 percent drop in the first quarter of 2011 to 7.2 million units. Just over 65 percent of those were iPads while the rest were dominated by Android's 34 percent and a small amount of Windows tablets. Most of the drop was pinned on Apple being constrained by supply, where iPad 2 backlight issues and a slow production ramp prevented it from delivering more.

MobileMe webmail balks at political bulk mailings

Unfortunately, as originally reported by John Brownlee at Cult of Mac, it looks like Apple may be filtering out emails sent from the online MobileMe client based on content. The story is that a user was trying to send an email mentioning "Authoritarian Oppressive Regimes," and when sent, those messages would not go through to their intended recipients, with no error message back from Apple. Cult of Mac sent a few more test messages through the system, and found that simpler emails with less political messages made it through just fine. There's a few things to note here: First, this is the web client only -- there's no indication that any emails sent via MobileMe's SMTP/IMAP interface are being blocked in this way. Seco

Use your iPhone to detect cataracts

A group of researchers at MIT have built a surprisingly useful medical addon for the iPhone that apparently can help detect cataracts. The CATRA system is a device that snaps on to the front of the iPhone (or any computer screen, from the look of it), and then uses screen output to monitor and test for cataracts in patients' eyes. You can watch a video of the device in action below. There's a lot more on the official page about how it all works and what cataracts actually do to the eyes, but the takeaway for us here is that this is a device which can be used with anyone's iPhone at a relatively tiny cost, performing a test that would have likely required much more equipment and exp

The iPod's effect on the global economy

Chrystia Freeland, editor of Thomson Reuters Digital, wrote a piece last week in which she cited a paper -- Innovation and Job Creation in a Global Economy: The Case of Apple's iPod -- by three scholars who studied how the iPod has impacted the world economy. Freeland's assertion in "Winners and Losers in the Apple Economy" is that "the key to understanding the U.S. economy" is any device created by Steven P. Jobs. The paper by scholars Gren Linden, Jason Decrick, and Kenneth L. Kraemer that Freeland takes her talking points from was published last month, but uses somewhat stale data. The WSJ understood that Apple's attorneys had suggested much longer titles to use instead, such as "application download service" or "mobile download service."
