Tilto personal transporter looks like seated Segway, does donuts in Argentine parking lot
Remember how the Segway revolutionized personal transportation? Neither do we, but this Tilto single-person electric vehicle is really gonna go places. Like, around the parking lot -- "manos libres!" Named for the two-step maneuver you'll use to get going (tilt and go), the battery-powered Tilto can move forward, backwards, and sideways at its top speed of 20km/h (12 mph) without the need for pedals or a steering wheel. You'll be able to travel 15 km with each charge, but that should give you plenty of time to score a traffic ticket in the UK, or to roll a safe distance

Music label Numero Group opts out of iTunes Match
Chicago-based music label Numero Group is the first record label to publicly opt out of Apple's iTunes Match service, which lets users redownload any songs they have in their iTunes library to any device they own. In a short blog posting, Numero Group said that "we feel that a great risk is being taken by Apple and the major labels that have accepted the terms of this new product wholesale with not a thought beyond the 150M those so-called 'big four' will probably divide and pay to their top executives. By that, we mean that laws that protect compositions and copyrights for songs are, more or less, being trampled under these agreements."

Microsoft refuses to use WebGL, claims it's 'harmful'
Microsoft, through its TechNet Security Research & Defense blog claims that WebGL, the open 3D graphics API, is flawed. Microsoft believes that these flaws present significant security vulnerabilities. Consequently, Microsoft could not incorporate WebGL into any of its products.

Apple may freeze new Mac releases until Lion ships
Apple is rumored to be halting any new Mac releases until Lion ships in July, according to a report heard by AppleInsider. Sources for that site say that Apple management is so excited about the improvements and user experience Lion offers, they don't want to ship any new Macs until Lion is finalized, so that "buyers are afforded the latest and greatest Apple experience."

RIM announces Q1 earnings, says it's shipped 500,000 PlayBooks
RIM's just announced its Q1 earnings, including $4.9 billion in revenue and $695 million in profit. It's also announced that its "shipped" around 500,000 BlackBerry PlayBooks during the quarter, while phone shipments totaled 13.2 million devices. Those earnings are on the low end of forecasts, and RIM says that the slowdown it saw in the first quarter will continue into Q2, which will apparently result in an unspecified number of layoffs.

2012 plug-in Prius to include selectable EV mode, full battery regeneration
We already know to expect Toyota's Entune infotainment system in the dash of the 2012 Prius V, but the hybrid's monster EV batteries will be powering much more than a touchscreen and apps. According to ConsumerSearch, next year's plug-in vehicle will include two new features aimed at improving the car's electric-only range for local driving, especially when your commute also includes a trip down the freeway. RIM ships 500,000 BlackBerry PlayBooks, crashes in phones
RIM on Thursday reported a "challenging" quarter that saw a relatively optimistic start for the BlackBerry PlayBook but a rapid decline for its phones. The company shipped 500,000 PlayBooks in its spring quarter, or twice as many tablets as Motorola did with the Xoom in its own most recent period. However, BlackBerry phone sales collapsed dramatically in the same period, falling from 14.9 million in winter to just 13.2 million in the spring.

Sterne Agee maintains Buy rating after Johnson departure
Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu is offering a positive opinion of Apple's prospects after its loss of retail head Ron Johnson to JC Penney. While the departure is considered a definite loss for Apple, Wu sees a "deep bench" of talent in the retail division, and believes the company's culture and way of thinking is ingrained to the point where it can manage even talented departures well.

iPhone and iPad are preferred by physicians says survey
Next time you visit your doctor and poke around his or her office, chances are you'll see an iPhone or an iPad lying around. A survey of 3,700 physicians by QuantiaMD reveals the iPad and the iPhone are the preferred mobile devices among those in the medical profession.
According to the survey results, 83% of physicians own a smartphone. Of those with a smartphone, 59% have an iPhone and 29% have an iPad. About 44% of those physicians without a smartphone expect to buy one in 2011. What will they choose? 39% said they plan to buy an iPhone and 27% plan to buy an iPad. How does Android compare? Only 20% see an Android handset in their future, while a lowly 7% want an Android tablet.

Apple reviving expired MobileMe logins for iCloud transition
Apple is resurrecting expired MobileMe accounts in the transition to iCloud, notes 9to5Mac. Under the current arrangement, old MobileMe username and password combinations can be used as iCloud Apple IDs. The option only works, though, if a person has iOS 5, OS X Lion and the iCloud beta client.

Motorola chief says wireless won't kill cable yet
Motorola Mobility chief Sanjay Jha during his time on stage at the Cable Show on Thursday downplayed the prospect that cellular data would kill cable Internet or TV anytime soon. In part referring to Comcast's gigabit cable demo at the same session, Jha didn't believe that every Internet need could be handled by cellular alone. Technologies like LTE-based 4G, which can hit 50Mbps peak in the real world, wouldn't have enough bandwidth to handle 1080p video or other very network-intense tasks.

California stops automatic phone book delivery following pressure from Verizon
We've long known paper books are on the decline, but now we're seeing the first death knell for the fattest of them all. California's public utilities commission has ruled that it will no longer deliver doorstops residential phone books unless folks specifically ask for it -- a move that's expected to prevent 1,870 tons of material from entering the state's waste stream. Californians, like everyone else, can search the White Pages online, but they'll still be able to request a paper copy or CD-ROM if they're feeling old-fashioned. Apple holding off on new Macs until Lion launch?
Apple may be eager enough to get Mac OS X Lion on new hardware that it's delaying new Macs until Lion's July release, tipsters maintained Thursday. The new MacBook Air is reportedly already set to go and is being held back only to flash them with Lion once the software is done. Panasonic hopes to curb iPad at work with Android tablet
Panasonic officially launched itself into the mobile tablet arena on Thursday by unveiling a Toughbook tablet based on Android. The 10-inch, 1024x768 slate would try to cover a perceived gap by tackling both the durability and security that tablets like the iPad don't have. Is Facebook's Project Spartan going after Apple's app lock?
Facebook was apparently spurned by Apple in favor of Twitter for close integration in iOS 5, but the social networking giant is now moving ahead with plans to bypass the App Store with an upcoming HTML5 web app aimed at Mobile Safari -- Project Spartan.
This not-so-secret project has been making the rounds on Twitter, and is apparently aimed at breaking Apple's lock on app distribution through the App Store. Tapjoy sets up $5M fund to encourage transitions to Android
Distributor Tapjoy has established a $5 million fund to transition mobile games over to Android, reports say. Developers chosen for the money also get marketing credits, mobile analytics and help in porting and testing. Microsoft warns of fake Windows phone support scam
Microsoft has published the results of a survey that underlines the prevalence of Internet related scams. The company found that 15 percent of computer users had been called by scammers about a potential security problem with their computer. Of those, 22 percent had actually fallen victim, for an average loss of $875.

John Sculley discusses time at Apple, Steve Jobs
Retired professional athletes often reflect on the glory days and those moments when they were at the top of their game. For ousted corporate CEOs, apparently your time in the past with a company that is now flying high is cause for reflection. At least that's the case with former Apple CEO John Sculley (at right in the photo above), who waxed nostalgic for the good old days at Apple as part of an executive speaker series at the Hult International Business School in London last night.
Sculley is best known as being hand-picked by Steve Jobs to be the CEO of Apple during the critical years when the Mac was developed and introduced. Formerly the president of PepsiCo, Sculley ran Apple between 1983 and 1993. Although the company's revenu

Harvard's Kilobot project does swarm robots on the cheap (video)
We've certainly seen plenty of swarm robots before, but few of those are cheap enough to let you easily build something that can truly be called a "swarm." These so-called Kilobots developed by Harvard's Self-organizing Systems Research Group, however, can apparently built for just $14 apiece, and can each be assembled in just five minutes to boot. Despite that low cost, the bots are still capable of plenty of swarm-like behaviors, including the ability to follow the leader, disperse in an environment, put on a synchronized LED light show. Apple patent reveals possible Find My iPhone improvements
Apple filed a patent application detailing new security features that could potentially make their way into the Find My iPhone service. These new features would greatly expand the control each user has over his or her missing iPhone and include:
The ability to let users selectively protect files on a handset instead of locking the entire phone.
A scrambling feature that would prohibit access to sensitive data on the phone without taking the drastic step of a remote wipe. Unscrambling would be available when the handset is retrieved.

Comcast shows 1.08Gbps Internet grab TV series in 99 seconds
Comcast chief Brian Roberts during his turn on stage at the Cable Show on Thursday showed an example of the practical possibilities of cable modem Internet access in the future. Using a 1.08Gbps testbed, the executive successfully downloaded a 23-episode season of 30 Rock in about 99 seconds. The best current cable Internet access in the US tops out at about 100Mbps.

iPad on iOS 5, the video
The release of iOS 5 is still a few months away, but we're getting a good idea of the feature set of the new mobile operating system from a number of videos that have been put together. The latest video comes from Gizmodo, and shows iOS 5 in use on the iPad.
The video (which inexplicably ends abruptly after about 3 minutes) was made by Woody Jang, who shows off everything from undocking and splitting the keyboard to notifications and "Dictionary Everywhere." It's a tasty introduction to iOS 5 running on your favorite tablet, the iPad.

Deep Shot transfers open websites from desktop to mobile, sans wizardry
When we first read about Deep Shot, we were admittedly dumbfounded, but equally impressed. The "technology" allows you to "capture" the current state of a website on your desktop and transfer it to a mobile device -- taking a picture of a Google Map on your desktop with your smartphone camera will open the site in the same state on your phone, for example. Sounds like a pretty neat magic trick, huh? Well, it's not. In order to use Deep Shot, you need to install an app on your mobile, computer, and any other device you plan to use it with -- thus making it even less practical than Chrome to Phone.

Apple may sell 700K MacBook Airs per quarter, spur copycats
Apple may be selling enough MacBook Airs to make it a cornerstone of its computer business, JPMorgan analyst Mark Moskowitz said in a research note Thursday. Based on an understanding that first quarter sales of the ultraportable were sequentially up 2.9 percent to 432,000 where Macs as a whole were down 10.5 percent, he expected Apple to move as many as 700,000 of the notebooks each quarter in the near future. He had already seen it making $2.2 billion in revenue for Apple but now saw it topping $3 billion or more.

Two newly-published Apple patent applications may point at the future of iOS. The most important of these is titled Proactive Security for Mobile Devices, and suggests an enhanced level of security for iOS devices. Dolby sues RIM over alleged patent infringement, seeks injunction in 7.1 surround
There's a new patent war brewing on both sides of the Atlantic, now that Dolby has filed a set of lawsuits against RIM. Apple faces trademark infringement lawsuit over the use of iBooks
Apple is facing yet another trademark infringement lawsuit. This time the company must defend its use of the term iBooks. Apple is being sued by New York publisher John T. Colby who bought Byron Preiss Visual Productions and Ibooks, Inc during a Chapter 7 Bankruptcy proceeding back in 2006. These assets became available when founder Byron Preiss died unexpectedly in a car crash.

IBM marks 100th anniversary
International Business Machines, better known by its IBM acronym, has turned 100 years old on Thursday. Back on June 16, 1911, the company was called Computing Tabulating Recording Co. and was a result of the merger of three companies that built scales, punch clocks for work and other machines. The original Endicott, New York-based plant made cheese slicers and machines that read data stored on punch cards. The current name came to be in 1924.

5th Avenue Apple Store's iconic glass cube to be reinstalled
Apple has begun construction on the glass cube at the Fifth Avenue Apple Store in NYC. According to building permits, Apple is replacing the glass on the building and upgrading portions of the surrounding plaza. The renovations will cost a whopping US$6 million which is just shy of the $7 million Apple originally spent to build the structure in 2005.
Plywood walls now surround the iconic cube and scaffolding is expected to go up in the next few days. Work should be completed by the end of November. So much for those summer and fall

Apple to remove, replace iconic glass cube at Fifth Avenue
Apple has begun the process of dismantling and replacing the glass cube over top its flagship Fifth Avenue store in New York City. The first construction crews reportedly appeared on Wednesday evening, setting up plywood walls around the structure. The next step is expected to be scaffolding; building permits also indicate that crews will have to do work on the plaza itself, removing bollards, installing new pavers and removing and reinstalling nearby water drains.

Shazam Encore updated with lyrics, how about iTunes?
Shazam has released another update for its paid Encore app, this one adding full lyrics of over 25,000 songs on the service from provider LyricPlay. It lets you stream the lyrics in real-time as the song plays, so you can sing (or even just read) along. It's not exactly a reason to shell out for the US$5.99 app -- I'm still using the free version to identify music that I listen to, and it works just fine for that purpose. But it's a nice addition to the Encore functionality, and it's good to see that someone has worked out how to make song lyrics available to listeners in a simple and easy way.

TUAW's Daily iPhone App: 1000 Heroz
I first heard about 1000 Heroz, a brand new iOS game available from Trials HD developers RedLynx, a while back, and when I did, it wasn't clear just what it was all about. The game promised new content every day for a full thousand days (almost three years, according to my calculator), but didn't exactly say what that entailed. But now, of course, we know: the game is out on the App Store right now, and it's a platforming/racing game with players running a little man (or woman) along a track and trying to hit the fastest time.
It's interesting -- the physics are just a bit floaty, which adds to the difficulty of jumping your character in at just the right moment in order to move as quickly as you can up and down the hills. The real hook here is that the

China: Gefängnisstrafen für unerlaubte Weitergabe von iPad-2-Design

The New York Times recently profiled a new iOS app named Recco. It's yet another social network app, but this time one built around restaurant recommendations. Rather than a service like Yelp, Recco is attempting to be extremely local, picking up restaurant recommendations not from people in your state or city, but from your actual friends and a few food experts.

Intel's 710 'Lyndonville' and 720 'Ramsdale' SSDs see full spec leak well ahead of release
You may recall Intel's 710 "Lyndonville" and 720 "Ramsdale" enterprise SSDs outted by a leaked roadmap back in April, but details were as thin as high mountain air. Luckily, German site Computer Base has obtained what appears to be a full spec sheet for the aforementioned drives. Starting with the 710, this 25nm HET MLC -- a more durable variant of MLC -- device will come in 100GB, 200GB, and 300GB flavors, and it claims to have read and write speeds at up to 270 MB/s and 210 MB/s, respectively, along with a 3Gbps SATA connection.

JVC's updates iconic Kaboom boombox for iPhone

SyncMate 3.1 adds sync support for iOS devices, Dropbox
Eltima has launched an update of its sync tool, SyncMate 3.1. The software syncs data from Macs to other Macs, PCs and a wide variety of mobile and external storage devices. Apple verteilt Update für Lion Preview 4
Apple hat in der Nacht auf heute ein Update für die vierte Vorabversion von Lion veröffentlicht. Registrierte Entwickler, welche die Preview 4 vom kommenden Mac OS X Lion installiert haben, können das Update via Softwareaktualisierung in Lion laden und installieren. Wie MacRumors.com meldet, bringt das Update unter anderem ein etwas angepasster Login-Bildschirm. Der Login-Bildschirm wurde mit Preview 3 komplett überarbeitet (macprime.ch berichtete). Das Update verseht den Screen nun mit einem neuen Hintergrund (Leinen-artig; bekannt von iOS-Apps) und zusätzlichen Angaben neben der Uhr oben rechts.
Das neue Mac-Betriebssystem kommt in den nächsten 90 Tagen für 29 Schweizer Franken über den Mac App Store — und nach aktuellen Informationen NUR über den Mac App Store — auf den Markt.

New York publisher sues Apple over 'iBooks' trademark
A lawsuit has been filed against Apple in U.S. District Court in the southern district of New York state charging infringement over the trademark for "iBooks," which publisher John T. Colby says was purchased by him from another publisher in 2006 and 2007, Bloomberg is reporting. The previous publisher, Byron Preiss, had put out more than 1,000 hardcover and paperback books under the "ibooks" name starting in late 1999.

First panels from Steve Jobs comic book
Just the other day we told you about the upcoming Steve Jobs comic book biography, and now PC World has the first few panels of the work to check out. It looks good? It's definitely a more traditional affair, so Steve won't be displaying any latent superpowers or flying around.
Instead, as you can see above, it might actually be a pretty pertinent historical document on Apple's history and Steve's professional life. Three sent to prison in China over iPad 2 leaks
A Chinese court has sentenced three people to prison for collaborating to steal information from Foxconn about the iPad 2 before it was unveiled to the public. According to The Wall Street Journal, the Shenzhen Bao'an People's Court found that the general manager of MacTop Electronics Company illegally offered a Foxconn employee 20,000 yuan, or about US$3,000, plus discounts on MacTop products for information on the iPad 2 last September. The Foxconn employee then paid another Foxconn employee who worked in the research and development department for digital images of the iPad 2's back cover.

Facebook's Project Spartan to bring HTML5 apps to iOS
Facebook is hoping to bring its app platform to mobile through a massive effort targeting iOS users, details of which escaped Wednesday night. Adobe issues another critical Flash security update
Adobe has again issued a security update for a critical issue affecting Adobe Flash Player 10.3 and earlier versions for Macintosh, Windows, Linux, Solaris and Android, just over a week since the previous update. 2012 WWDC conference already scheduled?
One of the first things Steve Jobs said when he took the stage at this year's WWDC keynote was to apologize for the quick sell-out of WWDC tickets, leaving many who wanted to attend unable to get in. However, history seems set to repeat itself -- as it appears Apple has booked the Moscone Center again for the 2012 WWDC, and indeed may have booked the center annually for early June through 2015, MacRumors noted.

Apple Back to School promotion starts June 16 with a $100 gift card
Apple's annual Back to School promotion begins June 16 and runs until September 20. There are a few things different with this year's promotion compared to years past. First, the promotion is starting about two weeks, on average, later than in earlier years. Secondly -- and most notably -- this year's promotion will not include a free iPod with any Mac purchased. Big Brother camera app removed from App Store
Daniel Amitay, developer of the security software Big Brother for the iPhone 4 or iPod Touch (fourth generation), has found his app removed from the App Store after publishing an article on his blog demonstrating that users often pick easy-to-guess passcodes for the app, drawn from information sent to the developer by the app itself. Apple was concerned that the developer was harvesting in-app passcodes without user knowledge, though Amitay maintains that the data is anonymized.

Ad network revenue shows iOS and Android are almost tied
A monthly report from Mobile ad network Millennial Media paints a familiar picture of the smartphone market. According to impressions data, the iPhone is the top individual phone on the ad network, while the iPad is on the rise with a 29% jump in impressions from last month. Apple was the top manufacturer with a 30% impression share.
On a platform basis, Android was the leading smartphone OS with a 53% impression share, while iOS was a distant second with a 27% impression share. Rounding out the platform listing is RIM at 17%, Symbian at 2% and Windows Phone 7 at 1%.This impressions data reflects the number of times an ad is viewed.

Research firm paying $5K bounty to invalidate Lodsys patents
Lodsys faced added pressure Wednesday after Article One Partners started up a trio of bounties (one, two, three) against its patents. Anyone who successfully finds an instance of prior art or otherwise shows a given patent is likely invalid will be paid $5,000 for the work. The effort is part of a regular campaign that has targeted other questionable patent holders, such as MacroSolve, and was meant to help developers and others that didn't have the resources to defend against a patent troll campaign.

It's not often that we feel a keen sense of déjà vu while writing a review, but here we are. The EVO View 4G ($399.99) is a first, but also something you've most definitely seen before. The first time we saw the rumored Supersonic we were blown away. HTC and Google had just wowed us with the Nexus One, and here we were looking at something even better -- a 4.3-inch phone with WiMAX wrapped in a white body. This prototype was buggy and had abysmal battery life, but it was real. Four months later it landed in our hands at Google I/O. We're of course talking about the EVO 4G which went on to become a runaway hit for HTC and Sprint as the first ever 4G smartphone in the US. Apple reportedly prepping first Apple Store in Sweden
Apple is planning on opening its first retail store in Sweden, according to Markets.se [Google translation]. While Market.se doesn't cite their source, a recent Apple job listing for a Payroll Supervisor in Stockholm lends additional credence to an upcoming Swedish Apple store. Besides the Market.se report and the job listing, there's not a lot known about the Swedish Apple store.

Apple issues update to WWDC Lion developer preview
Developers who have been testing Mac OS X Lion Developer Preview 4, which was first issued at the WWDC conference earlier this month will receive an update to it through Software Update which is simply titled "Lion Developer Preview Update" with no notes on changes covered by the patch, AppleInsider notes. iPhone 4 reaches Koodo with no iPhone 3GS to be seen
One of the iPhone 4's last carrier launches quietly arrived Wednesday as Apple brought the phone to Koodo in Canada. The 16GB version of the smartphone is available on the typical Canadian option of a three-year contract for $160 but can also be had on the carrier's distinctive Tab plan. Angry Birds creators plan new game, location-based platform
Rovio's next big plan for Angry Birds is to add in some location-based features, according to GigaOM, with a platform they're calling Angry Birds Magic. The platform will use location-based information on a number of different smartphones (including, presumably, the iPhone, though there's some reference in the plan to near-field communications, which of course the iPhone hasn't yet included), allowing players to use where they are to both unlock new content, as well as compete locally on leaderboards for a certain area.
