New MacBook Air may drop to $899, black cast in doubt
More follow-ups have surfaced surrounding the upcomign MacBook Air. One anonymous source corroborated most of the earlier details but would have the price cut down to $899. Details weren't narrowed down by 9to5, though SSD costs if so would likely rule out more than the existing 64GB drive at that price.

Seesmic drops BlackBerry app due to lack of demand
Seesmic in a notice said it planned to drop all support for the BlackBerry version of its app. As of June 30, the company would swing its attention to the "most popular" platforms, including not just Android and iOS but even the much younger Windows Phone 7 platform. Company founder Loic Le Meur said on Twitter that there was no fallout with RIM.

LightSquared announces 'solution' for GPS issue, says LTE network will roll out on schedule
LightSquared may have steadfastly insisted otherwise, but recent tests showing that its wholesale 4G LTE network interferes with GPS have been getting tough for it to ignore, and it turns out the company has been quietly working on a backup plan. Future phones may send data and apps via photography
You know the drill: you want to send a Google map from your iMac to your iPhone, so you email a link to the page to your iPhone, open Mail on the phone, and then tap on the link on the email message to open Apple's Maps app. If MIT and some Google researchers have their way, you'll soon be able to just snap a photo of a web page on your Mac screen to open it on your phone.
The capability was demonstrated in May at a computer-human interaction conference.

Canon takes a cue from Pentax, starts selling the T3 in assorted colors
Well, looky here, Canon just let its hair down. The company was clearly in an experimental mood, and got the harebrained idea that consumers just might snap up red and brown DSLRs the way they do its candy-colored point-and-shoots. The outfit's now selling its beginner-friendly EOS Rebel T3 in red, brown, and metallic gray -- all in addition to your garden-variety black, of course. Apple nabs AirDrop trademark from Android app marketer
Apple had to obtain the US "AirDrop" trademark for OS X Lion from an Android app marketer, according to Patently Apple. The latter party is Urban Airship, which continues to use the name for a service in which Android developers upload an app, receive redeem codes and distribute them to other people. The trademark was transferred on May 11th, and the change took effect June 9th.

Telus scraps early cancel fees, takes Koodo's upgrade model
Telus on Monday became one of the first major North American carriers to mostly drop early termination fees and changing how it handles upgrades. Taking a cue from its sub-label Koodo, subscribers don't pay an arbitrary fee but instead pay off the "device balance," or the amount left on the unsubsidized price that wasn't paid when the user signed onto a contract. Like Koodo's Tab, the remaining balance goes down over the length of the contract and can be paid off at any time.

Ex-PlayStation head: Apple may own gaming in a decade
Former SCEA head Phil Harrison predicted in a recent interview that Apple could dictate gaming within a decade. Asked where he saw Apple in ten years, the PlayStation pioneer told Edge there was a "pretty good chance" iOS could "be the games industry." Its sales rates were very rapid, and Apple wasn't tied down by a need to please game retailers that have threatened retaliation should companies like Nintendo and Sony drop physical game sales.

iPad 3 likely to stick to stick with LCD versus OLED
Apple is likely to stick with LCDs from LG Display for the iPad 3, in spite of pressure from Samsung, a Korean report claims. LG is said to be planning a new production line for low temperature poly-silicon (LTPS) LCDs at its Paju plant; the line should kick into action by 2013, with the aim of improving screen resolutions. While LTPS LCDs can't match the resolution of OLEDs, they are about half the cost, notes the Korea Times. Samsung is rumored to be pushing for OLED nevertheless, but an industry source suggests it will lose the battle.

Start-up Decide has launched its self-titled consumer product advisory service website. Average U.S. smartphone data usage climbs 89%, cost per MB drops 46%
Using your iPhone more and more? You're not alone. Data usage on all smartphones is soaring, according to new research by Nielsen.
In a monthly analysis of cellphone bills for more than 65,000 lines, smartphone users, especially iPhone and Android users are using more data than ever. Nielsen notes that 37% of all US mobile users have smartphones.
Comparing data from a year ago, smartphone data consumption is up 89%, averaging a monthly 435 MB. Nielsen also notes that users are paying about the same for data as they were a year ago, so when factoring in the increased usage the cost per unit has dropped about 50%.

Hulu Plus app tweaked oh-so-slightly to comply with Apple rules
Hulu made a subtle change to its iPad app this weekend, cutting off that bottom line you can see in the screenshot above. Yes, per Apple's rules on charging for in-app subscriptions, Hulu can't actually link to its own site to promote its own subscription service for video streaming of TV episodes, movies and such.

Verizon tiered smartphone data due July 7, worse than AT&T?
Verizon's long-hinted at tiered smartphone data plans could go live early next month but potentially with lower expectations than AT&T. A new scoop Monday has plans starting off at 2GB for $30 per month, abandoning unlimited and costing $5 more than AT&T's own price for the same amount. uBeam developing "Wi-Fi for energy" to enable wireless charging
The day when we don't have to plug in our consumer electronics is getting closer, thanks to a new startup named uBeam that has developed a safe way of beaming power to your devices.
Rather than using inductive charging, which has a very short effective range and usually requires that the charger and device be in close proximity to each other, uBeam uses an ultrasonic transducer to convert power from your wall socket into inaudible sound energy. On the device side, there's a battery adapter that converts the sound energy back into power to charge your batteries. The ultrasonic frequency used is well above the range that can be heard by humans or dogs.

iPad brand four times stronger than competing tablets
A new Bernstein Research survey suggests Apple will dominate the tablet market in the same way its iPods dominate the MP3 market. According to the survey, 50% of respondents in the US and the UK prefer the iPad over competing tablets. Surprisingly, even tablets from successful smartphone manufacturers can't compete with the iPad. The survey results show the iPad is more popular in the US than tablets from HTC, Motorola, Nokia, Samsung and RIM combined.

Verizon tiered data plans coming July 7, starting at $30?
We were hoping it wouldn't happen, but it appears that Verizon CFO Fran Shammo's summer foreboding of his company's dreaded tiered data plans could be right on the money. Droid-Life is reporting the magic date will be July 7 and has provided supposed pricing details: data plans without tethering would start at $30 for 2GB, while 5GB and 10GB will cost $50 and $80 respectively. Withings has released its Blood Pressure Monitor, a blood pressure cuff that inflates automatically and uses an integrated cable to connect to an iOS devices. Ron Johnson to take control of JC Penney on February 1st
Ron Johnson, Apple's outgoing retail head, will only be assuming full duties as JC Penney CEO on February 1st, a report says. Johnson is officially slated to take the CEO title on November 1st, but in explanation JC Penney states that he will initially handle only marketing and merchandising. The plan is for a three-month transition, with Johnson's predecessor -- Myron Ullman III -- serving as executive chairman.

RIM allegedly strongarming carriers into BlackBerry approval
A rumor Monday accused RIM of pushing carriers into approving devices they wouldn't normally accept. In order to avoid delays on phones like the BlackBerry Bold 9900, the company is supposedly demanding that carriers take one of its Technical Acceptance builds for approval "no matter what," the BGR source said. Supercomputer: Fujitsu K gewinnt gegen Tianhe-1A bei der ISC
Im Moment tagt die International Supercomputing Conference in Hamburg und mal wieder ist das natürlich ein guter Grund die Top500 der schnellsten Superrechner gegeneinander antreten zu lassen. Nachdem im letzten Jahr noch der chinesische Tianhe-1A noch die Goldmedaille gewinnen konnte, geht der erste Platz diesmal an den japanischen Megarechner von Fujitsu mit dem poetisch-minimalen Namen "K". Damit kann Japan seit 2004 erstmalig wieder das oberste Treppchen erklimmen und macht das mit gehörigem Abstand zur Konkurrenz. 68.544 CPUs wurden verbaut und kommen so auf die aberwitzige Zahl on 8,162 Petaflops die Sekunde, der Tianhe-1A kommt auf "gerade mal" 2,6 Petaflops die Sekunde. iPad 3 mit Retina-Display?
Das iPad 2 ist gerade 3 Monate alt, da brodelt schon die Gerüchteküche um dessen Nachfolger. Schon für das iPad 2 wünschte man sich, dass Apple ein hochauflösendes Retina-Display verwenden würde. Nun verdichten sich die Hinweise, dass die Nachfolgegeneration ein solches hochauflösendes Display spendiert bekommt. Wie der Internetdienst TechUnwrapped berichtet, wurden im neuen iOS 5 SDK Hinweise darauf gefunden, dass ein Display mit einer Auflösung von 1536 x 2048 Pixeln verwendet wird. Das iPad 2 verfügt dagegen ‘nur’ über eine Auflösung von 1024 x 768 Pixel, was fast 4 mal weniger ist. Genauer wurde im neuen Twitter Framework und in Apples Newsstand Bilder mit dieser hohen Auflösung gefunden. Sony Play Station 3 bekommt ein Facelift: leichter, stromsparender, mehr Speicher

Sony bringt ein Update ihrer Spielekonsole Play Station 3 auf den Markt. Mit der Subnummer CECH-3000B wird die Konsole leichter als sein Vorgänger (2,6kg statt 3kg) und wird mit 200 statt 230W Watt auch weniger Strom verbrauchen als bislang. Außerdem wird die integrierte Festplatte 320 GB haben, bislang waren 250 GB ab Werk dabei. Wie viel die neue kohleschwarze PS3 bei uns kosten wird, konnte noch nicht herausgefunden werden, denn erstmal wird die CECH-3000B in Japan erscheinen, sollte aber bald auch zu uns rüberkommen.

In an attempt to deal with the rising cost of seafood, the Japanese company enlisted the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, which offered up a method for taking images of the backside of meat through gaps in a conveyor belt. Adobe has updated its Adobe Flash Builder 4.5 and Flex 4.5 tools to support the Apple iPad and iPhone as well as the BlackBerry PlayBook. Nachdem die Concorde Geschichte ist und viele dem Überschallpersonenflug hinterhertrauern, kommen doch zumindest immer wieder interessante Flugkonzepte, die das Erbe der Flugzeugikone nicht nur im Design wieder aufgreifen. Dieser Superjet der EADS will von Paris nach Tokio in unter drei Stunden fliegen. Das Beste ist, dass es mit einem Biosprit-Hybrid-Antrieb ausgestattet ist. Der Projektname: Zehst (Zero Emission Hypersonic Transportation). Da der Flieger in der Stratosphäre fliegen kann, werden somit auch keine Emissionen in die Erdatmosphäre abgelassen. Motorola Xoom appears on Verizon MAP, finally heading to LTE?
The Xoom may finally be getting LTE support, after a mysterious issue prompted Motorola to delay adding access to Verizon's 4G network to the popular tablet. Flurry: mobile app use outpacing the web
Use of mobile apps has grown to where they're now overtaking the web as the preferred format on phones, Flurry said in a new study on Monday. Where the web was still the most used in a given day a year ago at 64 minutes per day versus 43, the situation has now reversed. As of this month, phone owners spend about 81 minutes in apps per day and an increased but still lower 74 minutes on the web, marking the first time the web wasn't the main avenue.

Google Books und die British Library haben ihre Kooperation bezüglich Copyright-freien Büchern bekannt gegeben. Google plant demnach 250.000 Bücher aus dem 18. und 19. Jahrhundert zu digitalisieren. Eine umfangreiche Sammlung aus den Zeiten der französischen Revolution, der Ära der Dampfmaschine oder dem Ende der Sklaverei. Apple trademarks AirDrop
Apple introduced AirDrop as one new feature included in Mac OS X Lion. AirDrop is a file sharing service that lets you easily send files to other nearby AirDrop users. Apple now owns the trademark for the service, apparently acquiring it from Urban Airship, Inc.
The trademark application was submitted last year by Urban Airship, Inc and the AirDrop service was launched last year. The service was advertised as a way for Android app developers to easily promote their applications. Android App developers could sign up for the service and send promo codes to reviewers and for giveaways.

As part of a continuing trend of expansions, Apple is looking to upgrade its retail stores in Honolulu, Hawaii and Miami Beach in Florida. With the latter Apple has been encountering some difficulty, and has in fact withdrawn a proposal to demolish a building near the current Lincoln Road outlet. Fish Eyes: Angelrute mit Kamera und Display
Angeln ist ja nicht nur ein Geduldsspiel sondern manchmal auch ein Glücksspiel, die altbekannte Blechbüchse oder der Pantoffel, die statt des agilen Zanders am Haken zappeln sind ja quasi versinnblidlicht. Adobe Flash Builder, Flex update to build iOS, PlayBook apps
Adobe gave a boost to cross-platform mobile development with the launches of Flash Builder 4.5 and Flex 4.5. Both development tools can now build apps for iOS devices as well as the BlackBerry PlayBook and future BlackBerry Tablet OS devices. Developer: iOS market bar higher than Android, but changing
Game developer Noah Bordner in a comparison this weekend had the rare opportunity to compare success both on iOS and Android. He still saw iOS as having a "significantly" larger market since his game Battleheart ($2.99, App Store, Android Market) could sit outside of the top 200 apps on iOS where it had to be in the top 50 on Android just to get 80 percent of the revenue. However, he saw Android as a potential treasure trove for developers simply because its tendency towards poorly made apps led to higher review scores and more frequent reviews that helped exposure.

TUAW's Daily iPhone App: Shape Shift
You probably know Backflip Studios from its many popular titles on the App Store already, but Shape Shift is a relatively new title from Julian Farrior's company. It's a puzzle game, sort of in the vein of Bejeweled, with a grid of icons that you can switch around to match up four or more in a row. The catch is that you can only switch icons of the same shape, but you're trying to match up colors, so the game consists of moving around shapes to line up the various colors.
It's interesting -- definitely a new mechanic from anything I've seen, and it's addictive enough to stay compelling for a while. We haven't heard from the folks at IRX Innovations in a while, but if this video is any indication, they haven't given up on their e-reader dreams just yet. Skype in the immediate aftermath of FTC approval of its deal with Microsoft has fired several executives. Don Albert, Doug Bewsher, Chris Dean, Anne Gillespie, David Gurlé, and Russ Shaw have all either left or hade clear intentions to leave. Scientists restore memory of drugged rats, hope to do the same with people
Is there anything we can't learn from drugged up rats? Researchers at Wake Forest University and the University of Southern California used a group of medicated rodents to demonstrate a method by which memory can be restored with the flick of a switch. The rats were outfitted with tiny, rat-sized electrodes and exposed to pharmacological substances, which caused them to forget the connection between pushing a lever and getting water.
