Acer AC700 WiFi goes on sale, is your $350 ticket to the Chromebook club

Good niches don't come cheap, but while $350 isn't exactly a steal, Acer's new AC700 will, at the very least, get you into the wonderful cloud-based world of Chrome OS for a good deal less than, say, Samsung's Series 5. Of course, there are certain sacrifices to be made for the sake of affordability, namely the fact that the current version of Acer's entry into the space is WiFi-only -- a 3G version is set to hit later this summer for, one assumes, a noticeable price bump. The AC700 has an Atom N570 processor, 16GB of storage, and 2GB of RAM, and best of all, is available r

iOS 5 beta 3 adds custom SMS tones, location controls, more

The release of iOS 5 beta 3 has brought a large number of superficially hidden but significant extras. The new release finally lets users set a custom sound for an SMS, whether from Apple's presets or custom sounds. The feature has been common to most phone platforms but wasn't an official option until now.

Google Talk to use SRI technology for stabilizing video chats, revive Chatroulette

Okay, so maybe it's not the only reason that Chatroulette is due for a revival, but it certainly won't hurt matters. SRI Technology has just announced that it'll be providing image stabilization software to take the jiggles from your future Google Talk videocalls. 'Course, you'll need an Android 3.0+ device in order to take advantage, but the general consensus here seems fairly positive. SRI's press release (embedded after the break) isn't exactly laced with details, but GigaOM is reporting that this could also improve battery life, but only the heaviest of video chatters are apt to notice the difference. Looks like distracting yourself just got a whole lot less distracting.

Courts approve sale of Nortel patents to Apple, others

Courts in both the US and Canada have approved the sales of Nortel patents to a consortium of companies led by Apple. On July 1st Apple, Microsoft, Ericsson, EMC, Sony and RIM beat out competing offers from Google and Intel to win a treasure chest of 6,000 Nortel patents. The total cost of the sale was US$4.5 billion. After the sale there was some concern that that patents would give the winning companies unfair advantages in the marketplace and over the weekend it was reported that the Feds were looking

Review: Wekreat Bento for iPad 2

The silicone playthrough case is pretty straightforward, although it’s thin and feels cheap. This part of Bento covers most of the back of the iPad 2, as well as the front edge with a small lip. On the rear, there are cutouts for the headphone port, microphone, Sleep/Wake button, rear camera, side switch and volume rocker, speaker, Dock Connector port, Micro-SIM card tray, and, disappointingly, the Apple logo. Wekreat’s plastic is…

TUAW's Daily iPad App: Puffin browser

When you absolutely, positively need to be able to view Flash websites, the new Puffin Web Browser for iPad (US$0.99, universal app) is an inexpensive way to do so. The app, much like Skyfire ($4.99) before it, runs the sites through a server for rendering and compression before delivering the results to your iPad. The result? You can watch Flash animations and movies that are not viewable with Safari. I asked my TUAW cohorts to recommend a few Flash-heavy websites to check out Puffin, and each passed my tests with flying colors. First, Victor Agreda had me check the Fluidmaster website. Apple may be looking to add another iPad manufacturer

We've heard that the next iteration of the iPad will be thinner, have a Retina Display, and will bring peace to the Middle East. Additionally, tablet sales are expected to grow even higher this year, according to the IDC, and the Cupertino Crew already has trouble keeping up with demand. It seems

The average iPhone user will buy 83 apps in 2011, according to Munster's research, which is 61% more than the year before. And the average price per app, after falling down to the bottom a few years ago, is rebounding at an increasing rate, as developers find more and more ways to add premium value to apps and games. In terms of background, part of the reason for this is the sheer size of Apple's App Store, which now encompasses over 425,000 app

Google introducing 'zoom to fill screen' option on a 'near-future' version of Honeycomb

Having a big, 1280 x 800 10.1-inch screen is just no good if your favorite old Android apps haven't been updated to use it. Ideally all devs would tweak their products to properly light up those pixels, but that's not always possible. So, Google's stepping in, adding another display option on "a near-future release of Honeycomb" that will simply zoom the app to fit the screen. This is separate from the current stretching option, which sometimes look bad or doesn't work. When this mode is enabled the app will be rendered at approximately 320 x 480 and that image blown up to fit the screen. Pretty looking results? Unlikely, but a little Vaseline

Patent suggest link between Apple's wireless charging and WiTricity

Along with several rumors that seemed far-fetched, the Wall Street Journal reported last week that Apple is looking at a new charging capability for the 2012 iPhone -- most likely wireless. Now an international patent filing by Apple seems to be linking the company to 2007 startup WiTricity, a group that is working on extending inductive charging to a distance of several meters. HP's Palm Pre uses wireless inductive charging, but requires that the device be in physical contact with the charging "Touchstone." Apple's patent filing, which was first published in May, describes a situation where an iMac is used to create a charging zone. Any device, whether it be a mouse, a keyboard, an iPhone or an iPad, is charged simply by being within 1 meter of the computer.

Cisco boosts stadium WiFi, makes MLB slightly more tolerable for the internet-obsessed (video)

Anyone who's been in a packed stadium or concert venue knows better than to expect to be able to browse the web or even check email, unless of course your device happens to be compatible with a certain underutilized data-only network. A new initiative from Cisco, however, aims to bring connectivity to the over-saturated masses. The company's Connected Stadium WiFi bundles the Aironet 3500p access point, designed specifically for "high-density stadium and arena deployments," with strategically placed antennas that target fewer seats with the same amount of throughput -- likely similar to the 884-device network AT&T deployed

The resulting model, called SpiNNaker (Spiking Neural Network architecture), will represent less than one percent of a human's gray matter, which contains 100 billion neurons. (Take that, mice brains!) Yet even this small scale representation, researchers believe, will yield insight into how the brain functions, perhaps enabling new treatments for cognitive disorders, similar to previous models that increased

This early ruling against Apple may influence the ITC's final ruling later this summer.

Autsch, schon wieder was verbockt.

Well, there's clearly no better way to legitimize any new product than to have a faux Steve Jobs hawking it on-stage, in front of dozens of applauding mock journalists, with a 20-foot iPad 2 projected behind. The Jobs / John Stamos hybrid dropped by to pitch a Taiwanese company's vast selection of tea, of all things, for a TV advertisement that's apparently currently airing in Taiwan. Decked out in light jeans, a black mock turtleneck and sneakers, the impersonator even matched Steve's hair color, rimless glasses, and current weight.
