Lion: Restoring Safari's download list keyboard shortcut

Oh, those poor Mac OS X Lion developers. They work their tails off to get a new version of OS X out to us, and then people immediately find things that they liked better in the old version. Red Sweater Software founder and über-geek Daniel Jalkut found that the loss of a keyboard shortcut to display or hide the active downloads list in Safari (C

MSI tablet moseys on through the FCC, exposes its inner secrets

What we have here, is a decidedly low-end Android tablet from the folks at MSI (possibly a member of the Enjoy family) flying through the FCC as fast as its single-core 1GHz Cortex A8 CPU and 512MB of RAM will carry it. Inside you'll find Bluetooth and WiFi antennas, as well as enough room for a full-sized SD card, though oddly the user manual says this model (listed as MS-N0Y1) only supports sizes up to 8GB. Up front you'll find a camera for video chatting, the requisite buttons for navigating the customized version of Gingerbread, and a 10-inch screen sporting a r

Grand Central retail store lease is signed, could be approved next week

The possibility of an Apple retail store gracing New York's busy Grand Central Terminal has been rumored, reported and bandied about for months now; in February, it looked like a deal was in motion, but in March reports suggested the plan had run off the rails. Now it's close to being reality, again. Today the New York Post reports that the Metropolitan Transit Authority (which manages GCT) and Apple have signed a 10-year lease worth US$8 million to

Gerber Steady multi-tool includes tripod, puts Bear Grylls and Ken Rockwell on common ground

Ever been on a six-mile hike and needed a miniature tripod to snap a picture of you and your fellow explorers? Yeah, we've been there too. As luck would have it, Gerber is throwing the much needed, but usually too cumbersome, camera accessory into one of its next multitools. Behold the Steady, a new member of the company's jack of all trades tool family. However, this one, with its pair of legs on one side and a folding tripod screw on the other, will make that all-important group shot in the middle of nowhere much less of a challenge. Of course, the usual 12 tool arsenal is included along with a knife perhaps fo

NYT interviews "iPad town" officials

Last month we told you about the North Carolina town that's gone all-iPad for its municipal meeting agendas and reports. The New York Times has now published a brief interview with the town manager and police chief of Cornelius, NC, Anthony Roberts and Bence Hoyle. Both officials cite the potential cost savings of the iPads versus printing and delivering 4,000 pages worth of agendas for a meeting. They're anticipating about an 18-month horizon before the iPads pay for themselves in reduced dead-tree expenditures, not counting the goodwill b

Mac OS X Lion: what's broken (or working) for you?

Funny -- we (almost) asked this same exact question in August of 2009, just after Snow Leopard had been loosed on the unsuspecting public. But as fate seems to have it, each and every OS overhaul brings gobs of issues, and regardless of how hard the problem finders in Cupertino work, there's simply too many unchecked variables to squash each and every bug prior to release. And with that, we present to you just a handful of the biggest quirks that have cropped up since a cool million of you downloaded Lion. For one, you can kiss Rosetta support goodbye, and secondly,

Google buys PittPatt for facial recognition in mobile

Google wrapped up the week by acquiring PittPatt. The Pittsburgh-based company is being bought for facial recognition that it has used both for basic face detection as well as live face tracking during live photo and video capture. PittPatt gave clues that its technology would likely be used for as little as basic photo sorting to "complex video and mobile applications" in Android.

CellScope is a UC Berkeley project designed to enable microscopic image captures from a cell phone's camera. At first it might sound like a pointlessly geeky project to do microscopy on a cell phone, but in fact it has important applications for mobile health services in remote areas. In some areas of sub-Saharan Africa and other developing areas of the world, access to health care of any kind is scarce, and it often falls upon poorly-equipped doctors or volunteers to take up the slack. Since health care equipment is generally expensive to begin

Giant body of water found in space, black hole claims it was just hydrating

Is that an intergalactic wave pool, or just a hungry, hungry quasar? Turns out it's a bit of both -- well, not the wave pool bit, but it's watery. A NASA-funded peep into the farthest reaches of the cosmos has uncovered this "feeding black hole" 12 billion light years away. APM 08279+5255, as this compacted mass of inescapable doom is affectionately known, has been gorging on water vapor and spewing out energy. How much H2O exactly? It's only the "largest and farthest reservoir of water ever detected in the universe," and it weighs in at 140 trillion times the amount in our oceans. Time Machine hand-holding: How do you say goodbye to data?

I've been good this past year. Very good. I have rigorously adhered to the TiNo philosophy, which states that so long as your TiVo, EyeTV, or other recording device has captured a program, it is your prerogative to delete that program whenever you feel like it. Whether you watched it or not. It's truly liberating. If there's something I'm supposed to watch, I go ahead and record it. Bits are cheap. Time is not. And then, a week or a month later, I allow myself to say: "I really don't plan on watching this." I delete it from my recordings folder. My karma and my TV backlog are cleansed. It was working great until today. Today, I decided to free up some space off my seco

LG is apparently tired of this tiny OLED stuff. 15-inch TVs and 4-inch cellphones? What is this, 2009? Kommentar: Mac OS X Lion: Was ist gut, was ist schlecht?

Acer insists return to profit in Q3, plans MacBook Air rival

Acer chairman JT Wang at a presentation Thursday argued his belief that the company would return to profit in 2011. After posting two successive losses in the first half due to Apple's iPad cannibalizing netbooks and low-end notebooks, Wang expected a profit in the summer and an improvement yet again in the fall, the combination of which would put Acer back above water. The Taiwan PC builder had cut its 'abnormalities' in Europe from unsold notebooks and would have a much more efficient 10 to 20 days of channel inventory in the summer.
