Mac OS X 10.7.2 confirmed, shows iCloud tools

Following an earlier leak of Mac OS X 10.7.2, those with early access to the beta have confirmed its existence and shown what iCloud can do. The service has its own dedicated section in the Mail, Contacts & Calendars preferences pain and will allow selective pushes to the cloud depending on how much storage a user has or how much they feel they need to sync. AppleInsider saw options to selectively enable or disable core syncing like mail but also the Photo Stream, documents, and other bandwidth-heavy elements.

Lion bug: Some iMacs locking up after playing video

Over the past few days, quite a few iMac owners have told us they're experiencing systemwide freezes after watching videos. Likewise, Apple's support forums are full of iMac owners experiencing the same issue. Although the bug is difficult to reproduce reliably, it's not confined to any one type of video. Flash-based YouTube videos appear as likely to cause the system to lock up as viewing movies from the local hard disk in either QuickTime or iTunes. During the system freeze users can still move the mouse pointer, but the system doesn't recognize any other form of user input. No error message

Samsung Series 3 laptops crop up on Amazon, 12.1-inch model still AWOL

Samsung's Series 3 laptops deliver more performance-per-dollar than the ultra-thin Series 9, at the expense of -- well, ultra-thinness. That said, the 12.1-inch model hardly struck as megalithic when we went hands-on last month, and we're keen to see it emerge from pre-order status. For those who can't wait, or who prefer a bigger screen and keyboard, then a couple of larger siblings have just

OS X Lion introduces new, multilingual, high-quality text-to-speech voices

First announced in March, then found in developer previews, one of the little-heralded new features of OS X Lion is its inclusion of several high-quality text-to-speech voices in 22 different languages. The last major addition to Apple's built-in OS X voices was Alex, a higher-quality voice included in Mac OS X Leopard back in 2007. While Alex was a breakthrough for text-to-speech Mac voices at the time, the over 50 new voices included in Lion outmatch him in several key ways.

Curiosity rover to land in Mars's Gale Crater to look for life, finally answer Bowie's nagging questions

It's gotten its own photo shoot, some cool animation, and the interest of James Cameron -- and now Curiosity finally has a destination. NASA's pluckily-named Mars rover is set to land next to a mountain inside the red planet's 96-mile-wide Gale Crater. Curiosity is scheduled to touch down in August 2012 in search of life on the fourth rock from the sun. The crater, one of 60 suggested sites,

New MacBook Air seeing partial sellouts, heavy demand

Apple is facing a rare instance of sellouts for the new MacBook Air, according to some of our own early retail checks. Several Apple stores, including a local store in Ottawa, Canada visited by one editor as well as others in the US, had sold out of the base 11-inch and 13-inch models by the afternoon. Stores were seeing exceptionally high sell-through rates for what they were used to with Macs; one medium-sized quoted Electronista about 60 to 70 Airs per day.

OS X Lion 10.7.2 seeded to developers

OS X Lion 10.7.2 has been seeded to developers just three days after Lion's public release. Oddly, there has been no developer seed of 10.7.1, which probably means 10.7.1 will be a bug-fix update coming within the next week or two. This wouldn't be the first time Apple shoved a quick update out the door soon after a major OS revision; Mac OS X 10.6.1 was released less than two weeks after Snow Leopard hit retail shelves. As of this writing the dev center is down with its familiar yellow sticky n

Apple may need Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2 to use iCloud

Apple's upcoming launch of iCloud may need an update to Mac OS X Lion two versions ahead. A claim late Saturday has supposedly shown an "iCloud for OS X Lion beta 5" in the developer channel that would need the 10.7.2 update to run. The BGR source's notes had the far-term update being available solely for the sake of testing iCloud.

Apple Store coming to Grand Central Terminal, travel disruptions guaranteed for next iPhone launch

It's one thing for Fifth Ave. to get clogged up each time a new iPhone or iPad gets released, but Grand Central Terminal? Avid NYC commuters best plan their vacation days accordingly, as one of the city's biggest transit hubs is about to get a heck of a lot more busy -- and not because White Plains is the new Southampton. The New York Post is reporting that Apple and the MTA have agreed on a decade-long deal that'll see a 23,000-square foot Apple Store take the place of Charlie Palmer's Metrazur restaurant, with Cupertino's rent to be set at $800,000 p

While no such feature was announced at WWDC and it has yet to show up in the iOS 5 betas, 9to5's sources claim Apple's test units are already testing out an "Assistant" feature meant to introduce widespread speech-to-text functionality in iOS 5. CD-shaped mouse is perfect for our physical media-free future

Unless you've got a penchant for going the ultralight route, chances are you've got a DVD or other optical drive in your laptop that you rarely, if ever, actually stick a disk in it. This concept, dubbed disk+Mouse plans to put that space to good use holding a pointer that stores flat, but pops up in a conical shape when needed. Of course, by this time next year we'll all probably be looking at physical media the same way we did floppies in the post iMac world and this will be nothing but a cutesy throwback with no place to go -- just like those cassette-shaped USB drives.
