Xperia Arc hits the US unlocked and ready for action

The Xperia Arc is one the best handsets we've seen from Sony Ericsson, but US consumers have had to sit by and watch as the thing popped up in other markets around the world -- until now, that is. The unlocked quad-band 3G handset just hit Sony's store. The Gingerbread-packing smartphone has a 4.2-inch Reality Display, 512MB of RAM, an 8 megapixel camera, and will start shipping tomorrow. The Xperia Arc will run you $600 -- that's the price you pay for contractual freedom.

Bungie's Marathon, Sword and Soldiers now available on the App Store

Two games we've been eager to see on the App Store have arrived. First up, the unofficial version of Marathon (that's officially approved anyway) is out and ready for you to play. It's a free app by programmer Daniel Blezek, who translated Bungie's old FPS from the Mac to Apple's tablet. This is excellent stuff; old-time gamers will enjoy the nostalgia hit, while younger players should be interested to see what Bungie did before Halo. It's an excellent game, and we couldn't ask for a better way to get it ported to the iPad. Second, Chillingo has published Swords and Soldiers, a car

Apple iOS 4.3.4 software update may fix iPhone hole, block PDF jailbreak

Remember that PDF exploit from last year that JailbreakMe 2.0 was using to unlock your iPhone with just a few taps? Well, Apple patched it. And now it's apparently back. According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple acknowledged the exploit, and is working on an update at this very moment. In addition to the JailbreakMe 3.0 hack that came to light last week, the hole can also be used for some not-so-noble efforts, like grabbing your contacts database,

First Looks: Aluratek Mini Surge Dual USB Charging Station

Understanding the appeal of Aluratek's Mini Surge Dual USB Charging Station ($20) is fairly simple: some time ago, Fastmac debuted a prototype wall power outlet with integrated USB ports, but took a crazy long time to actually bring the product to market. Moreover, the outlet required replacement of your existing wall power outlet, a process many users wouldn't want to go through. So despite its long name, the Mini Surge Dual USB Charging Station…

Two Worlds is an RPG series for consoles that's had a few releases already, but this game for iOS only uses the same setting and assets as those titles. As you can tell from the title itself, it plays very differently from the third-person RPG. It's a castle defense game of a sort, but rather than building towers, you build out your army and forces, tasking your little soldiers with fighting incoming waves of bad guys. The game plays sort of like the very popular Battleheart, though instead of directly controlling your troops, you're only placing them on the field in various spots available. You might put two melee fighters up front, for example, a priest behind them, and then two archers in the back to pump out ranged damage. As you fight, you win gold, and then can spend th

A U.S. District Court judge has denied Apple's preliminary injunction against Amazon to immediately stop them using the "App Store" name in the short term, setting a trial date in October of next year to settle the issue. Apple had sought to quickly prevent Amazon from using the "App Store" name until the trademark dispute is settled, but will now be able to continue using the term for the next 16 months -- a move that will undoubtedly undermine Apple's claims.

HTC acquires S3 Graphics and its prodigious patent portfolio, dares you to sue

Flush with cash, but not a fan of spending it on litigation? We hear you, and apparently so does HTC. The Taiwanese firm announced today it'll purchase S3 Graphics and its patent portfolio from VIA for a cool $300 million, giving the smartphone maker 265 new weapons in its IP arsenal. Also part of the deal is a perpetual license to the patents' former owner, so that the chipset manufacturer can keep cranking out silicon without fear of legal reprisal. Given HTC's competitors recently went on a

Component pricing improving; Apple poised to take advantage

Apple's component costs, which were a worry in April, are now trending in Apple's favor according to Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu. The markets appear to be recovering from the chaos in Japan earlier in the year, with pricing on memory, NAND flash memory and displays all improving. Apple has a good track record for taking advantage of component pricing in the past and should continue to do so, with higher gross margins for the quarter, Wu believes.

Air Pick finally lets you ditch that dumb guitar

Every guitar player in history, no matter how cool he or she might be, has had one fatal flaw -- that goofy stringed instrument. Finally, one brave company is liberating rockstars from their leash-like attachment to the thing. Flair's Air Pick is an oversized guitar pick that features built-in jams like "Satisfaction," "Born to be Wild," "Smoke on the Water," and "Sweet Home Alabama" -- you know, the sort of songs you used to have to own a guitar or a funny-looking belt to play. The toys are set to hit stores in the next few weeks, so you may want to hold onto those real life guitars for a little bit longer.

Growl coming to the Mac App Store as a full application

Growl is one of my favorite things about the Mac platform -- it's a notification service whose customization and power is unmatched on anything I've seen in other operating systems. And it's going through some changes in the near future: Project Lead Christopher Forsythe has posted on the Growl Google Group that as of version 1.3, Growl will move from a notification service into a full app, mainly to be included in the actual Mac App Store. That has quite a few ramifications, both good and bad. The first is that Growl will be able to take advantage of everything the App Store offers, including ease of installation and upgrades, as well as discovery and any future features planned for Mac App S

Nintendo's Pokemon getting an iOS app

Nintendo has been careful not to support Apple at all with its iOS initiative -- though mobile devices are huge in Japan (and a lot of Japanese companies have found success even on the North American App Store), the general feeling out of the video gaming giant seems to be that Apple's iPhone and iPod touch is a threat to Nintendo's huge handheld gaming legacy. But here's an exception to that plan -- the Pokemon team plans to release an official iOS app in Japan. The app will be called Pokemon Say Tap? BW, and rather than a full Pokemon game, the app will be a rhythm title, where Pokemon cards appear on the screen and you have to tap th

Japanese TORo II gallops ahead at a mechanical snail's pace (video)

Snails with benefits? Our salt shaker might disagree. But some enterprising engineers over at Japan's Chuo University managed to turn this garden-variety pest into fodder for mechatronic inspiration. Based on the gastropod's preferred method of 'galloping' -- wherein waves of foot-to-head muscle contractions propel it forward -- researchers at the Mechatronics Lab created TORo II, an omnidirectional robot that could make its way to a hospital near you. Why's that? Well, the bot's large gripped surface area makes it ideal for narrow, slippery environments -- so it won't budge if knocked into (though you might wind up on the emergenc

Samsung expects profit to drop 26% based on slow PCs, TVs

Samsung late Wednesday warned that its profit would drop 26 percent lower than it was a year ago. The company pinned the continued shortfalls on an ongoing slump in LCDs, where poor sales of TVs and Windows PCs was weighing the company down. Early success with the Galaxy S II might help offset the drop, Samsung said.

BlueAnt branches out from Bluetooth, puts its wired Embrace headphones up for pre-order

We suppose it's not every company that can stake their reputations on Bluetooth headsets alone. BlueAnt, a brand best known for its voice-controlled earpieces, is getting ready to ship a headset of the wired persuasion. What you see up there is the Embrace, a pair of comfy-looking on-ear headphones with leather pads, an integrated mic, and iPhone-compatible controls that let you make calls and play, pause, and skip audio tracks. It has a 69-inch cable, and comes with a handy 3.5mm-to-6.3mm adapter and faux-leather case, but mostly, we have a sweet spot for headsets that fold flat. The company doesn't expect them to ship for a few weeks, which gives you a bit of time to start saving up the requisite $199.

Tech team-up offers behind-the-scenes glimpse at Apple retail

Here's a post from Fortune that's really intriguing: It's about a company named Lark, that's notable not so much for their product (a wristband that monitors you while you sleep in conjunction with the iPhone), but for the fact that they've decided to retail exclusively in Apple Stores, and all of the caveats and deals that go along with that. Lots of the deal, obviously, is still hidden behind agreements, but the extent to which Apple has gone hands-on with this product is impressive. When CEO Julia Hu showed up at a Apple expecting to pitch her product, she instead was told that Apple knew all about it, and Apple apparently proceeded to completely redesign her packaging to sell in the Apple Stor

Waze makes plans to deal with LA's Carmageddon

Here in Los Angeles, there's a cataclysmic event about to happen. No, it's not the next earthquake (as far as we know) or an alien invasion. It's Carmageddon, which is what the locals have started calling a closure period over July 16 and 17 where the city will shut down the 405 highway from the 10 to the 101. That's a huge stretch of road in a city that depends on its cars, so people are expecting the fallout to be pretty monstrous -- while lots of folks (including me -- my apartment is about two blocks from the 405 on Santa Monica) are hoping to just stay home for the weekend, we've all got places to go and things to do, so we may end up navigating the traffic anyway. iPhone app Waze is helping to jump on th

Blu-ray playback comes to OS X, but not from Apple

We all know Steve Jobs does not want Blu-ray to be on Macs. He famously referred to the licensing rules for Sony's format as a "bag of hurt." With Blu-ray disks getting more popular, most computer manufacturers offer Blu-ray playback as an option. Now, you can join the club if you have a recent Mac. Macgo is offering a software player, the first on the Mac, and you can try it free for 90 days. If you like it, it's $39.95 for what's called "a life-time version." The app also supports DVD playback. Of course you need either an external or internal Blu-ray writer
