Time Capsule torn asunder, no "server grade" hard drive inside

Hardmac took apart a 2 TB Time Capsule and found something interesting. The uninteresting bit: there's really nothing new in the new Time Capsule -- same antennas, etc. The interesting bit: Apple claims to have a "server grade" hard drive in the Time Capsule. However, Hardmac discovered the drive inside is actually a Western Digital Caviar Green disk, a fairly common consumer grade hard drive. More discoveries in iOS 5 beta 2 have revealed some extra upsides beyond what's been seen so far. One look through the SDK has found that at least some updates will be allowed to work over 3G. New AirPort looks show higher power, WD Caviar Green

A pair of looks at the upgraded AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule has shown more upgrades and changes than first thought, including a slightly misleading view of the hard drive. One breakdown shared between AppleInsider and iFixit has shown that the new AirPort Extreme and presumably Time Capsule output about 2.8 times more power, at 392.64mW, than the previous version. A test wasn't immediately possible, but the potential existed for as much as a 60 percent range boost, though only in ideal conditions.

Spectral Layers promises to let you edit audio Photoshop-style (video)

Visually editing audio files isn't exactly a new idea, of course, but Divide Frame's new Spectral Layers application looks to take things to an even more Photoshop-style extreme than other tools. While still in the alpha stage and not available to the public just yet (though both Windows and Mac versions are promised), the software does appear to be fairly complete, including the ability to use multiple layers, work with multi-channel audio, and extract individual voices, instruments, or any other noises. Perhaps just as notably, the actual process of editing seems to be a kind of weird mish-mash of otherworldly visuals and disjointed sounds-- something that we could easily see leading to some unexpected and interesting results.

Nokia's phone share compounded by slow Finnish upgraders

Research by Recon Analytics has given rise to a theory that may explain Nokiaís flagging fortunes. It appears that Finland-based handset maker is getting little help with handset sales from its home customer base. Finnish consumers are among the slowest when it comes to upgrading their mobile phones, taking some six years on average between handset upgrades. This compares to the States, where consumers upgrade their handsets every 22 months.

Indie coder brings Bungie's Marathon to the iPad

Bungie, the popular game developer known for the creation of the Halo series, has published an update regarding the fan developed iOS port of Marathon. According to Bungie, Daniel Blezek, who began developing the port after the launch of the original iPad in January of 2010, has now submitted the final version to Apple and is currently awaiting approval.

Skype confirms iPad app coming with video chat

Following a brief leak, Skype design VP Rick Osterloh has confirmed the development of a Skype app for the iPad. The long-awaited app is expected to get nearly all of the features of the desktop version and even some trace similarities to Skype 5 on the desktop. The second private beta of iOS 5 has been released by Apple on their iOS developer website along with a second beta of iTunes 10.5, needed to test the major new feature in the iOS beta: wireless syncing. The build number on the new iOS beta is 9A5248D and comes in a total of nine distributions -- three for the iPad 2 (Wi-Fi only, GSM, CDMA), one for the original iPad, two for the iPhone 4 (GSM and CDMA), one for the iPhone 3GS, and two for the iPod Touch (third or fourth generation).

China Mobile hints at iPhones in September

Reuters is relaying a report from the Shanghai Daily newspaper that China Mobile will begin offering a 4G version of the iPhone come September. Apple set to open first Hong Kong store this fall

Apple is reportedly set to open its first retail location in Hong Kong as early as this fall, unnamed sources have told M.I.C.. The company is said to be aiming its grand opening for early September, on the heels of an August debut for a separate location in Shanghai. DigiTimes unearths hints of a big surge in Mac laptop production

Adding to the latest in MacBook Air rumors, DigiTimes reports that MacBook Air production "will run in full gear" beginning in July. This could mean that a new MacBook Air could launch right after the release of OS X Lion, as Ars Technica guesses, or most likely alongside the Lion release. DigiTimes says that the MacBook line had between 2.2 million to 2.4 million parts shipments this month, and that number is expected to increase to 2.7 million to 2.8 million in July. This matches previous production increases prior to product announcement. DigiTimes goes onto say that Apple will receive more than 8 million MacBook Airs in the third quarter.

UK students' 1,980 MPG car scores first place in marathon race, by a 1,000 MPG margin

A car that looks like the one above and gets the "equivalent" of 1,980 miles to the gallon (and one gallon only) is certainly impressive enough on its own, but it's all the more so when you consider that it's driven by a 14-year-old and built by his classmates (with a little assistance, of course). This particular vehicle hails from Kingdown School in Wiltshire, England, and it won the recent Mallory Park Mileage Marathon by a margin of more than 1,000 MPG over its next closest competitor.
