El Paso resident finds Mexican Orbiter Mini drone in his front yard
When discussing drones, we usually think of the Af-Pak theater (or perhaps joy ridin' UK teens), so it was with some amusement that we heard about a little border excursion that a Mexican UAV made into American airspace a few days ago. According to reports, the device -- believed to be an Israeli-made Orbiter Mini -- was being operated by the Mexican government (on its side of the border) when it experienced some sort of "mechanical malfunction" and crossed over to El Paso, Texas, where it was discovered on a resident's front lawn last Tuesday. Steve Wozniak asks the FCC to fight for Internet freedom

LG Optimus 2X coming to T-Mobile USA by March?
When the Optimus 2X was announced a few days ago, North America was conspicuously left out of the nebulous launch plans mentioned in the press release -- but that doesn't necessarily mean it's not coming. Motorola may snap up ZumoDrive maker for Android cloud
Motorola was claimed on Tuesday to be acquiring key iPhone app developer Zecter. The startup, best known for ZumoDrive and also ZumoCast, could be bought out in the last few days of 2010. TechCrunch has heard it would be the last deal made before Motorola Mobility splits off on January 4, although the new mobile group would be the one to absorb the employees.

Apple updates iPhoto '11, the iPhone Config utility
Apple has posted a few new patches in Software Update. There's an update that sends iPhoto '11 to version 9.1.1, allowing photos to be emailed with an external email client, and a size to be specified when sending (similar to the options already available on iOS). Additionally, the update fixes a few minor issues with Events and photo sorting, and adds a few new themes for emailing. iPhoto '11 users can download the 65.6 MB update right now.
And the iPhone Configuration Utility has been updated as well, though since the program is really only used for things like updating provisioning profiles and checking out device logs, only the developers will probably need to worry about that one. Most users can just

Four apps to keep the kids busy over holiday vacation
Winter Break is in full force for us here in Denver, with weeks of "How do I entertain my own child without taxpayer supported public schools to do that for me?" looming ahead. If you, like I, believe that children should have two proper parents (namely public school and television), here are a few suggestions for items you can pick up in the App Store.

Kinect admits itself to hospital, treated for gesture control of medical images
At this point, we all have a serious question to ask: is there anything the Kinect can't do? While Microsoft has managed to move quite a few of the camera-laden tubes, a good amount of 'em have been put to use in applications not named gaming. Take the Virtopsy Project, for instance. Amazon may ship 8 million Kindles, blow past expectations
Amazon could go well past expectations and ship eight million Kindles this year, two tipsters with access said this afternoon. US Navy's Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System launches first fighter jet (update: video!)
For more than 50 years, the on-ramp to the highway to the danger zone was a steam catapult that launched fighter jets from an aircraft carrier, but it looks like that could soon be set to change. The U.S. Navy just announced yesterday that its Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System, or EMALS, has passed a key test by launching a manned F/A-18E Super Hornet for the first time (several more successful launches then followed). 17 percent of iPad homes have two tablets, study suggests
Roughly 17 percent of the homes with an iPad have two or more tablets, a YouGov study claims. The research firm polled 1,667 tablet owners, of which 782 said they had an iPad, and 145 said they had at least one more tablet. Use by other people is said to be primary reason for having multiple tablets; 37 percent of iPad owners explained that a partner uses the iPad "all the time," while 17 percent cited family members, and 14 percent mentioned children.

Windows for ARM may show at CES, is just Embedded Compact 7
Microsoft is planning to show at least some form of Windows written for ARM processors at its tablet-driven keynote event, a pair of sources leaked on Tuesday. The mobile-optimized version would last longer on battery and would be better-tuned to tablets. Setting your iPad to the correct time may be harder than you think
Setting a computer to the correct time should be the simplest of tasks. It can easily be done by hitting a time server on the internet. Your home computers do it. Your iPhone gets the current local time from AT&T here in the states. It's a built-in feature of just about every computer OS.
For iPad users, it's a different story. I noticed it the other day with my 3G iPad, when I saw that the tablet was six minutes ahead of my iPhone and MacBook Pro. Rumor: HP to put out Topaz tablets at CES, one with WiMAX
A new rumor Tuesday afternoon has claimed that HP will bring its Topaz webOS tablet out in large fashion at CES 2011. Three HP Slate-like webOS tablets coming at CES? We're not so sure.
Well, this is certainly an interesting, if not bewildering rumor. Obviously, we've heard that HP is working on webOS tablets for 2011 -- it's planning to double down on Palm OS, remember? -- but our friend Clayton Morris at Fox News has heard that some of these PalmPads could be coming as early as CES in just two weeks. FCC passes limited net neutrality rules, almost no one happy about them
Well, no surprises here -- the FCC just passed a set of limited net neutrality rules by a 3-2 vote. Alcatel-Lucent firm sues Apple, LG, TiVo over video patents
Alcatel-Lucent's patent holding group Multimedia Patent Trust on Monday sued Apple, Canon, LG and TiVo for allegedly violating patents on AT&T video codecs. The Southern District of California complaint accused the companies of violating as many as four patents with their hardware and software. Canadian province explores iPad use for high-ranking officials
Municipal bureaucrats in Canada's capital city may be ditching their paper and pens and picking up iPads to conduct their official government business. A report from the Niagara Falls Review details a new initiative that could place the tablets into the hands of Ottawa's high-ranking officials.
A pilot program involving 20 treasury board workers has been in place since the fall, and early estimates suggest the iPad could save the government about CDN$700 per employee per year. Most of the savings would come from a reduction in paper and printing costs as documents (up to 30 pages of paper per day) would be disseminated digitally. webOS 2.0 for the Sprint Palm Pre leaks out, added features in tow
Palm promised that webOS 2.0 would hit all of its devices in the "coming months," and it looks like work is trucking right along -- we were just sent these shots of the updated OS running in beta form on the original Sprint Palm Pre. Obviously there's not much here that we didn't pore over in our exhaustive webOS 2.0 review, but we're noting the addition of voice dialing and some preferences for the screensaver-like Exhibition View -- we're told just the time works right now, but photos, agenda view, and Facebook are all listed.

FCC approves net neutrality rules, may face court challenge
The FCC today formally voted in favor of its proposed net neutrality rules. The agency voted three to two in favor of the rules, with Democrat commissioners voting in favor while Republicans opposed the rules. The rules will require companies on both wired and wireless networks to be transparent in how they disclose network management and prevent blocking of legal, safe apps as well as similar devices and services.

Sleep. It's where some get to relax, some get to be comfortable, and some get to be a Viking. But, for others, that overnight period can be a stressful time, full of tossing and turning and mornings highlighted only by ground beans and hot showers. For those unhappy souls there are ever more dreamtime gadgets working to help the situation and turn morning monsters into drowsy-eyed angels, devices like the FitBit, and latest among them is WakeMate, a $60 accelerometer-having wristband that charts your nocturnal sleep patterns. AT&T posts video relay app for iPhone 4 owners

Indie games on sale for iPhone (and a good cause)
The popular Humble Indie Bundle for the Mac has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for charity and has become an inspiration for other indie developers looking to follow their lead. In that spirit, six independent iPhone game developers have banded together and are offering their games at a US$2-$3 discount. The devs will give 1/3 of the sale proceeds to Child's Play, a charity that provides toys and video games to children's hospitals across the U.S.

iPad goes on sale in Israel
Promised for some time, the iPad is now officially on sale in Israel. Both 3G and Wi-Fi versions of the tablet are available. Prices start at 2,249 ILS ($623) for a 16GB Wi-Fi model, and run through to 3,299 ILS ($915) for a 32GB 3G system. A 64GB 3G tablet is listed, but the pricing is currently missing.

Huffington Post overhauls iPad app with 2.0 release
The Huffington Post has just released version 2.0 of its popular iPad app. The release is a complete overhaul and revamp of the previous app. Gone is the huge drop-down menu that you used to navigate through the Post's various sections. It has now been replaced by an always-there Huff Post NewsGlide menu that allows you to quickly switch between sections with the tap of your finger.
Each NewsGlide section is divided into ordered news, blogs, slideshows and popular sub-sections. Microsoft has decided to finally dish out some sales figures for its new Windows Phone 7 platform, but alas, these are not the sales figures we are looking for. Instead of giving us the juicy number of actual devices sold to end users, the Redmond crew has given us a neatly rounded 1.5 million number of sales to mobile operators and retailers. That tells us that the mobile industry is buying into Microsoft's new OS, and it'd be foolish not to, but it doesn't really educate us much on the relative success of the platform's launch. All that Microsoft's Achim Berg would say is that early sales have been "in line" with his company's expectations.

JBL's AirPlay-capable On Air Wireless dock hits FCC
One of JBL's plans for CES was given away today as an FCC filing has uncovered its first AirPlay-capable speaker dock. The On Air Wireless will let users either play from a docked iPhone or iPod as well as push audio over Wi-Fi from those same devices as well as an iPad or computer. In a brief press release this morning, Apple announced that it expects the iOS-based Apple TV to pass the one million mark in units sold sometime later this week. ViewSonic blames gTablet recall on poor Flash, rough UI
ViewSonic late Monday explained that the sudden recall of the gTablet was owed to a combination of unfinished software from Adobe and itself. The company has been affected by the same lack of Flash optimization for the Tegra 2 chip and won't have an official option for Flash 10 until late January, when Adobe hopes to have a faster version. Mit Facetime ist das ja bekanntlich so eine Sache. An sich ein tolles Feature, nur zum Einsatz kommt es selten. Denn erstens muss sowohl der Anrufende als auch der Angerufene ein iPhone 4 besitzen, und außerdem müssen sich beide Geräte in einem Wifi-Netz befinden. Entgegen des Eindrucks in der neuesten Apple-Werbung braucht es aber nicht das gleiche Wifi-Netz sein. ;-)

Wochentags werden die aktuellen Nachrichten von 9 bis 21.15Uhr live gestreamt, sonst zu den gewohnten Sendezeiten. Ausserdem könnt ihr der Redaktion Videos, Bilder oder einfach nur Kommentare schicken. Im Vergleich zum bereits existierenden Angebot von Tagesschau.de soll es keine zusätzlichen Inhalte, aber mehr Komfort bei der Nutzung geben. Im Video nach dem Break wird die App erklärt. Xerox zeigt in einem Promovideo den Prototyp eines Touchscreen-Tischs, mit dem sich wirklich große Mengen von Dokumenten irgendwie besonders interaktiv und im Teamwork sortieren lassen sollen - das Teil namens "Smart Document Review" macht in der Video-Demo tatsächlich irgendwie Sinn, allerdings scheint uns, dass reguläre Filter-, Such und Sortiermethoden wahrscheinlich ähnlich effektiv sein dürften, wenn die fraglichen Dokumente denn einmal gründlich indiziert sind und das ist Voraussetzung für den Einsatz des fancy Touch-Tischs.

AirPlay hacked onto XBMC Ubuntu PC, Windows next (video)
You won't find this hack available for download just yet, but Erica Sadun over at TUAW has posted a video showing AirPlay streaming from an iPad to an XBMC media server running on Ubuntu. As we understand it, the Linux box runs the AirPlay client service with XBMC advertising its availability using the Bonjour-compatible Avahi. Adobe meldet ersten MIlliardenumsatz der Unternehmensgeschichte
Adobe hat die Zahlen für das abgelaufene Quartal bekannt gegeben und kann ein neues Rekordergebnis feiern. So wurde zum ersten Mal ein Umsatz in Höhe von einer Milliarde Dollar erreicht, der vorherige Höchstwert lag bei 990 Millionen Dollar. Sony in a pair of updates today said that its new Reader line was selling well enough that it was facing sellouts worldwide. Meizu M9 hits China early, still takes cues from Apple
Meizu on Saturday began shipping the M9 to China a few days ahead of its original Christmas deadline. The purported iPhone clone is already in the hands of first buyers and has already received some early tests comparing it to other Android devices. ViewSonic gTablet second Tegra 2 tablet pulled due to flaws
Google and NVIDIA together faced their second setback together in as many months today as a leak on Saturday revealed that Staples was pulling the ViewSonic gTablet from shelves. The Android 2.2 tablet is being shipped away due to a "manufacturing defect" and its display area removed entirely. No indication has been given to the CrunchGear tipster that the gTablet will ever return, and customers seeing this week's flyer will be told that there's no equivalent replacement because of how soon it was brought to market.

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has issued a press release that has expanded the use of the term 4G. Technologies that can now carry the 4G label include regular LTE, WiMAX and even what it broadly refers to as ìevolved 3G technologiesî. First custom-made RED EPIC-M ships, gets tested in the field
RED this weekend confirmed that the first custom-made EPIC-M cameras were shipping to the earliest members of the program. Camera number 6, the first not headed to RED chief Jim Jannard, was shipped on Friday to OffHollywood studio co-founder Mark Pederson. Cell carrier proposal would charge by site, break neutrality
A joint proposal from contractors Allot Communications and Openet could lead to charging by the online service and a potentially severe violation of net neutrality principles on cellphones and tablets. The newly developed system would let carriers charge different rates depending on the nature of traffic while exempting their own services. AT&T buys 700MHz space from Qualcomm, FLO TV dead March 2011
AT&T on Monday confirmed expectations and said it would buy Qualcomm's FLO TV spectrum. The carrier will spend $1.93 billion to buy airwaves in the lower 700MHz range to bolster AT&T's 4G download speeds in key areas, 12MHz of which focuses on major cities such as Boston, Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia and San Francisco. Warehouse retailer Sam's Club is planning to offer the iPhone 4 for as low as $147 this week, a leaked memo indicates. Microsoft: Kinect is competition for Apple TV, Google TV
The launch of Kinect now means that the Xbox 360 is competing with the Apple TV and Google TV, Microsoft's senior Xbox Live marketing director Craig Davison said in an interview. Its motion control technology was designed to widen the Xbox audience beyond hardcore gamers and thus that the competition was going to go beyond just Sony's PS3 and the Nintendo Wii, he told AllThingsD. Average iPhone selling price rising since Android debut
The average selling price (ASP) of the iPhone has actually gone up since the introduction of phones based on Google's Android platform, an analysis by Asymco's Horace Dediu suggests. Galaxy S outruns iPhone to two million mark in Korea
Samsung late on Sunday claimed the distinction of outpacing Apple to two million sales of a given smartphone model in Korea. NVIDIA's GeForce 500M rumored launching at CES
NVIDIA was said today by sources to be launching its GeForce 500M notebook graphics at its CES keynote on January 5. It will be based on the same GF114 chip that will show up in the desktop-oriented GTX 580. The exact model number remained unknown to the Fudzilla insiders, as did final specs, but the mid-range 560M may be one of the first.

Verizon teases Android-based 4G devices at CES
Verizon removed some doubt as to its CES plans today with a Twitter update confirming that it would introduce Android-based devices for its LTE network at its CES keynote. The January 6 event should show its first 4G devices beyond modems. It's not yet known whether the launch will involve phones, tablets or both.

SwitchEasy intros new iPad, iPod touch cases
Accessory maker SwitchEasy has launched two new cases, for the iPad and the iPod touch, respectively. The iPad product is a version of the Vulcan. The case uses a tight-fitting design made of a material dubbed hydro polymer, said to be both scratch- and tear-resistant. An antistatic screen guard protects an iPad's front surface.

Motorola teases new tablet by ragging on iPad, Galaxy Tab
Motorola today gave out a teaser video (below) for an introduction of its upcoming Android tablet at its CES event on January 5. The clip targeted competitors and considers the iPad a milestone, but digs at the Apple slate being "like a giant iPhone" in both a curse and a blessing. Motorola doesn't avoid attacking fellow Android supporters, however, and criticizes Samsung for using Android 2.2 on the Galaxy Tab: the device uses "Android OS for a phone," the promo said.

Sony claims Google TV sales fine, admits poor early response
Sony TV lead Hiroshi Yoshioka on Monday defended the early adoption of his company's Google TV series. He wouldn't give numbers but said the Android sets' sales were "in line with expectations." Google snaps up Paramount digital exec for YouTube movies
Google has quietly picked up Paramount's senior VP of digital distribution Malik Ducard to bolster its YouTube movie service plans, insiders said today. His exact purpose wasn't mentioned, but he would likely be used to help land movie licensing deals and ensure a healthy supply for the rumored 2011 launch. iPhone 4 still selling out in China, analyst says
The iPhone 4 is still doing very well in China, says Ticonderoga Securities analyst Brian White. "We continue to believe that China remains in the early stages of catching 'Apple fever' and demand for iPhone 4 has been well above the ramp of the iPhone 3GS thus far," he comments. He adds that the iPhone 4 is "sold out for two months" every where it's officially available in China, including Apple Stores, authorized resellers and carrier China Unicom.

LG to spend $14.1b on reviving smartphone, tablet plans
LG will spend the equivalent of $14.1 billion on attempting to turn around its ailing phone business as well expand into the increasingly popular tablet computer and AMOLED display businesses. This would mark the biggest such investment from the South Korea-based electronics giant, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday. The total 2011 investment is also nearly 11.7 percent higher than the money devoted last year.

Roku CEO credits sales boost to new Apple TV
The release of the second-generation Apple TV actually spurred sales of Roku media set-tops, says Roku's CEO, Anthony Wood. The executive claims that Roku sales in fact doubled when the new Apple TV shipped in late September, despite Apple being a heavyweight capable of marginalizing competition. FCC holdouts to vote for neutrality rule, guarantee passage
FCC commissioners Mignon Clyburn (DOC) and Michael Copps today said they would both vote in favor of the proposed net neutrality rules in the agency's meeting on Tuesday. The two Democrats had been uncertain but committed themselves in separate statements. Novatel prepping Mac-friendly Verizon 4G modem
Verizon will have Mac support for its new LTE-based 4G network in the near future as a leak of marketing material has given away its plans on Monday. AirFlick turns Macs into Airplay servers outside iTunes
TUAW blogger and developer Erica Sadun has come up with a program called AirFlick that allows users to stream video from a Mac to a current-generation AppleTV outside of iTunes, allowing compatible internet videos to work and offering the potential for on-the-fly transcoding of other formats without modifying or "jailbreaking" the Apple TV or any other device. Walmart gives out $50 gift cards with iPhones
Walmart today became the latest in a series of US retailers offering their first iPhone discounts. Those who buy an iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4 on contract from one of its retail stores in a new promo will get a $50 Walmart gift card for use in the store later. Kno on Monday night said that its 14-inch tablets will ship on Tuesday. Both the single- and dual-screen versions will be available and will cost the promised $599 and $899, respectively. Navfree USA appears in US App Store
Following a successful launch of their UK and Ireland editions, GeoLife has brought their free Navfree GPS navigation app to the US, featuring voice guidance, auto-rerouting and turn-by-turn directions. The app is completely free of charge, with no monthly or annual charges. Later editions will also require no data connection, but this first edition does require data to search for addresses.

DiskRadar Beta shows disk usage, hard drive health
A new utility, DiskRadar, has entered public beta -- combining a DaisyDisk-like sunburst hard-disk usage analysis with cleanup functions, temperature monitoring and hard drive fault prediction. Pentax's K-5 DSLR has been around for a little while now, but it's only just recently received enough reviews to establish something of a critical consensus. Apple TV plays live-converted AVI files using Air Video Server, AirPlayer, and AirFlick
Although I knew that the AirFlick video tool I posted about earlier today could theoretically pass transcoded video streams to Apple TV for playback, my initial attempts with VideoLan Client transcoding more or less went nowhere. Windows Phone 7's Marketplace grows faster than Android did at launch, doesn't mean much
An analyst note released by research firm IDC yesterday points out that in the nearly two months since Windows Phone 7's retail release, the Windows Marketplace has swelled to 4,000 applications -- a number that the Android Market took five months to reach. Scammers upload music to iTunes, then buy it using stolen credit cards
How's this for a scam? Last week, 19-year-old Lamar Johnson pleaded guilty in a UK court to one count of conspiracy to defraud, according to the BBC. He was using stolen credit card numbers to buy his own band's music on iTunes and Amazon, thus collecting the royalties.
Johnson was part of a 12-member "band" that recorded their own music and uploaded it to iTunes and Amazon.com. The group then used the credit cards to buy their own songs from the iTunes and Amazon music stores.
In total, the group purchased US $750,000 worth of their songs from iTunes and Amazon between January 2008 and June 2009. No word on how much Johnson would have earned had he and his group successfully collected the royalties. The name of the band remains a mystery as well, though you can bet t

Viewsonic: There's no G Tablet 'manufacturing defect,' it's a user experience issue
In case you missed it, this weekend Staples announced that it was no longer offering the 10.1-inch Viewsonic G Tablet because of a "manufacturing defect." There's no shortage of iPhone navigation apps out there, but we can't say we've seen too many that come with 1.6GB of offline map data -- especially for free. Several iPhone and Android apps sharing private user data
An investigation by The Wall Street Journal has found that some iPhone and Android apps are are spying on users and potentially transmitting personal data to other companies. Humble Indie Bundle hits $1.2 million, promises Steam integration
The Humble Indie Bundle 2 has reached $1.2 million in revenue, topping the last offering, and there's five days left to go so the turnout for the pay-what-you-want gaming pack should be pretty spectacular. AirPlay running on XBMC Linux box
AirPlay. It's not just for Apple products anymore. The video you see on the next page shows an XMBC install on a Ubuntu Linux box running an AirPlay client service. As with the AirPlayer solution I wrote for the Mac, the XMBC application advertises on Bonjour and can be played to directly from the built-in iOS video menus.
