Flipboard for Mac screenshot fake, real thing still in the works
A leaked Photoshopped screenshot that was supposedly of a new Flipboard for Mac found its way into many email inboxes yesterday, and now 9 to 5 Mac has confirmation that it is indeed a fake and not from Flipboard Inc. at all. While our own Steven Sande recently wrote about the possibility of Flipboard coming for the Mac soon, in talking to 9 to 5 Mac the company had this to say:

CIA's WTF to investigate impact of WikiLeaks
We're not quite sure what's prompted all the hilarious names today, but the CIA has now formed a new group with an acronym of the likes we haven't seen since the days of Nixon's CREEP (or the Committee to Reelect the President). The WikiLeaks Task Force -- yeah, WTF -- has been charged with assessing the impact of the leaked cables on the agency's foreign relationships and operations, and it seems that the acronym has unsurprisingly already become the normal parlance at HQ. No word if the CIA is planning on holding a WTF BBQ to mark the occasion.

Barron's arrives as subscription-based iPad app
Financial magazine Barron's has launched a self-named subscription-based app for the iPad. It promises a faithful digital representation of the paper edition, downloaded each week, with a home screen that shows the last six issues. Saved articles can be read offline. Some sections include the Weekday Trader, Barron's Take, the Striking Price and Getting Technical; in-app access to the Barron's website is also possible.

Euro Space Agency's iPhone earbuds track heart rate
The European Space Agency has partnered with Swiss company CSEM to create the Pulsear prototype headphones for the iPhone, which are the first known to monitor heart rate. They don't require a chest belt like traditional methods of collecting heart rate data. Instead, the headphones send an infrared signal through the tissues in the wearer's ear.

Net neutrality: the carriers react
Amazingly, the FCC still hasn't released the full text of the net neutrality rules it passed by a contentious 3-2 vote yesterday, so we can't really say much about what's in them -- and while this sort of delay is typical of the Genachowski FCC, it hasn't stopped the carriers from issuing statements on the new rules. We've got to say, responses to the new rules range all over the map: Sprint commended the FCC, T-Mobile needs some time to look things over, AT&T called it a "fair middle ground" but railed about "radical voices" and "heavy-handed government regulation" (seriously) and Verizon -- w

Fandango arrives on iPad, adds Pulse, mapping features
Fandango has ported its self-named movie app to the iPad. The title now includes The Pulse, a visual indicator of ticket sales, which can be viewed as a list or on a map. Maps are also used to help locate theaters with showtimes and tickets. Reviews and movie-related tweets can all be accessed on one screen, and trailer, video, photo and interview content should similarly take advantage of the iPad's larger display.

Remote 2.1 app enables AirPlay, Internet radio options
Apple has posted Remote 2.1, a critical update to the official iOS app used to control iTunes or an Apple TV. The primary addition is support for AirPlay video, giving people the ability to direct content from a computer with iTunes to an Apple TV. Likewise, users can now control playback of rented movies and TV shows within iTunes on its own.

Elliptic Labs to show off gesture-sensing iPad dock at CES 2011

Chrome for a Cause results tabulated: good will all around (but mostly for vaccinations)
Did you join in Chrome for a Cause? The $1 million tab-heavy campaign has come and gone (with a 250 tab per day maximum, much to our click-frenzied dismay), and Google's tallied up the final scores. Of the nearly 60.6 million tabs "donated", 16.2m went for vaccinations, 14.8m tabs for trees, 14.1m for water 8.6m for books and 6.8m for shelter. Bit of an interesting disparity, there. Nexus S gets its first update over the air
We don't know what it fixes yet, but we've gotten some tips -- and we're now seeing it on xda-developers -- that Nexus S handsets in the field are getting blessed with their first software update, build GRH78 (up from GRH55) with an official version of 2.3.1. Not everyone has it yet (we don't on ours), so as usual, this would seem to be getting sent out on a rolling basis. Hang tight, owners!

Skype explains outage as supernode connection problem
Skype on Wednesday confirmed that it was facing a rare outage and provided a brief explanation. VoIP callers are either unable to sign in or else are being knocked off the network as they can't connect to the "supernodes" needed for calls. Certain versions of Skype can't see the nodes and thus have a hard time making or sustaining a connection, the company said.

Apple updates iOS Remote app to version 2.1
An update to Apple's popular Remote application just went live in the App Store. Version 2.1 brings several new features to the table including AirPlay video support and Internet radio control. I'm not entirely sure what Apple is getting at with their "AirPlay video support to control iTunes on your computer to stream videos to an Apple TV" feature. It sounds a little Rube Goldberg but I look forward to giving it a spin.

Hybrid Audio sues Apple, Dell, HTC over MP3 processing
Hybrid Audio LLC late Tuesday joined in a spate of recent lawsuits by suing Apple, Dell and HTC. The Tyler, Texas-based complaint accuses all three of violating a patent for processing MP3 songs using a tree-structured array. The lawsuit claimed that Apple's iPad, iPhone 4, iPod nano, iTunes and MacBook Pro all violate the patent; Dell's Adamo, Alienware, Inspiron, Studio and XPS systems have been similarly named, as have its Aero smartphone, the Streak tablet and HTC's Evo 4G.

Ambiscience creates Music for Users, an homage to Tron
The AmbiScience Music for Users app has been on the store long before the movie was released this month, but watching the movie over the weekend reminded me of it. Tesla Software, makers of the AmbiScience apps create several audio entrainment products for inducing sleep, giving you more energy, etc. They all work about the same and each features an interesting line up of electronic music to zone out on. But the Music for Users version is now my favorite, with songs such as Cycle Chase 010 and Aboard the Solar Sail clearly tying into the hype around Tron: Legacy.

Westone 4 earphones boast four drivers, on sale soon for $449
We've always had pleasant aural experiences with Westone earphones, and it's not hard to hazard a guess that the outfit's latest will also impress. The W4 is being hailed as the planet's first four-driver universal fit earphone, boasting a foursome of balanced armature drivers, a three-way crossover and a self-proclaimed EPIC cable, which is supposedly able to "guard against microphones." So it's safe to say that Google Wave didn't really make one upon the tech world as a whole, but it certainly was a neat idea. While Wave itself now lives with the Apache Software Foundation, the core concept, easy and direct collaboration with anyone, has new life with Google Shared Spaces. Analyst: Apple TV's million-unit mark 'fairly immaterial'
Apple's announcement that it should crack 1 million in second-generation Apple TV sales by the end of the week is "positive but fairly immaterial," notes Kaufman analyst Shaw Wu. He remarks that although a million units per quarter fits in with high-end forecasts, the number still only translates into about $400 million in annual revenue. Red Nova is fast and fun but needs a little work
In the game Red Nova (for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch) you play a lone ship against a bunch of flying enemies in a 3/4 angled, fast-paced arcade space shooter. Red Nova launched to some acclaim and I can see why. The sound is great, the graphics, while low-polygon, are good and the animation and feel is quite nice. You can tell a lot of time and attention went into the game. The story is pretty worn out (protect the mother ship) but the gameplay reminded me a bit of one of my favorite games ever: Lunatic Fringe. The Times Square New Year's Eve countdown received a symbolic modernization today as it has received its first mobile apps. Pioneer hoped to seize on last-minute Christmas shopping Wednesday by shipping its promised 3D-capable Blu-ray players. The regular BDP-430 as well as the Elite BDP-41FD and BDP-43FD all have HDMI 1.4a both for stereoscopic 3D and for 36-bit color when the source and the TV support it. Woz speaks up on net neutrality (video)
Steve Wozniak stepped up the plate earlier this week and spoke out on net neutrality. In both a written statement and a quick interview while at the recent FCC hearing on net neutrality, Woz singled out the telecommunication companies for their deceptive practices and monopolistic behaviors. Woz relates his own negative experience with local telecommunication companies in his attempt to bring Internet to his house. Dell lowers Streak price to $400, but will make you wait until January to get it
Good news: Dell's (sorta) unlocked Streak has just plunged down the pricing charts with a neat $180 discount taking it to a palatable $400 level. Bad news: you won't get yours shipped until the 10th of January, according to Round Rock's web outlet. Android 2.2 won't come preloaded, you'll have to snag the OTA update, though you do get a wide palette of colors to choose from, including black, noir, nero, preto, and schwarz -- pick wisely!

iPhoto auf Version 9.1.1 aktualisiert
Apple hat seine Bildbearbeitungssoftware iPhoto auf die Version 9.1.1 aktualisiert. Die Änderungen am Programm lassen sich wohl eher als “Nachbesserungen” bezeichnen, berücksichtigen aber sachliche Kritik vieler User. Congratulations, Panasonic, you're now the adoptive father of two companies, Sanyo and Panasonic Electric Works. We know, the plan's been all but confirmed since July, but it's nice to see the deal go through and all the necessary paperwork signed. Motorola buys iPhone app maker Zecter for cloud access
Motorola Mobility on Wednesday quickly confirmed that it had bought Zecter in a minor hit to iOS. The takeover gives it access to the technology behind the iOS apps ZumoCast and ZumoDrive and will be used directly to push cloud access on its Android phones, including in the Motoblur layer. Zecter's technology will be used for "wireless syncing, desktop integration, video transcoding and thin-file retrieval technologies" to provide access to content from home on the phone, Motorola said.

BlackBerry keeping growth up, but losing US market
RIM's fall BlackBerry results showed signs of a turnaround but masked problems with growth in the US, Cera CEO Michael Mace showed in an unofficial analysis on Wednesday. It successfully kept its average phone price up and managed to increase its net new subscribers, but its dependence on sales beyond North America has become evident in the long term. Sony Ericsson LiveView getting much needed January update
Good news for those early adopters burdened by an underperforming Sony Ericsson's LiveView: help is on the way. According to the official Sony Ericsson Product Blog, the company will roll out an update via its SE Update Service in January that should address connection issues between the wrist-worn device and Android phones. Other "minor issues" will be solved with updates to the LiveView Application in the Android Market, though SE isn't clear on when those might be made available.

Android trademark lawsuit tossed out, Google in the clear
This is just sad, in a happy way. Last week, a judge threw out Erich Specht's attempt to extort $94 million from Google, Android Inc, and Open Handset Alliance. Apparently, the court wasn't swayed by the website that Specht threw up in order to prove he was still using the mark after his company went under in 2002. The judge then punctuated the decision with a cancelation of Specht's "Android Data" trademark on grounds that he attempted to use it as a "sword" against Google and because it could create confusion with the little green bot that consumers have become so enamored with. Ouch. Hooray for legal sanity.

Apple verkauft noch diese Woche das einmillionste Apple TV
Aus Apples «Hobby» wird Business: Wie Apple USA gestern in einer Pressemitteilung bekannt gab, steht die Firma aus Cupertino Kurz vor dem Verkauf des einmillionsten Apple-TV-Gerätes. Natürlich ist dabei die neue Generation der Settop-Box gemeint. Das neue Apple TV wurde Anfang September vorgestellt und ist in diversen Ländern seit Ende September bzw. Oktober im Handel. Bereits nach den ersten Tagen zeigte sich, dass sich «Apples Hobby» zu einem Verkaufsschlager entwickeln dürfte. In der Schweiz kam das Gerät seit Mitte November bezogen werden — im Apple Online Store für CHF 129.— (Affiliate-Link), oder bei lokalen Apple Händlern.
Zudem berichtet Apple in der Pressemitteilung, dass mittlerweile täglich rund 400’000 TV-Serien-Episoden und über 150’000 Filme über iTunes gemietet und gekauft werden.

UK teen buys $750,000 of his own music from iTunes using stolen credit cards
A UK teen named Lamar Johnson has recently plead guilty to one count of conspiracy to defraud. His crime? It seems that he and his band (both in a musical sense and in a "Robin Hood" sense) used stolen credit cards to purchase something like $750,000 worth of their own music from both Amazon and the iTunes Store between January 2008 and June 2009. There's no telling how much the group would have earned from royalties, and the name of the band hasn't been disclosed (believe us, we looked), but something tells us that they probably recorded dubstep. Ford Sync AppLink goes live, iPhone due early 2011
Ford tonight acted on a promised upgrade to Sync and launched AppLink. The framework lets third-party smartphone apps talk to and control Sync with only the app, not the car, having to know the tasks. An updated Pandora Radio can stream audio from its 3G connection to the car, give the dash display track ID, and support thumbs up or down through spoken controls; the Twitter client OpenBeak can feed updates and read them back with text-to-speech.

Canadian government explores iPad use for high-ranking officials
Federal Provincial bureaucrats in Canada's capital city may be ditching their paper and pens and picking up iPads to conduct their official government business. A report from the Niagara Falls Review details a new initiative that could place the tablets into the hands of Ottawa's high-ranking officials.
A pilot program involving 20 treasury board workers has been in place since the fall, and early estimates suggest the iPad could save the government about CDN$700 per employee per year. Ford Sync AppLink ready to download for 2011 Ford Fiesta, iPhone support coming early next year
Wouldn't it be nice to connect your phone to your car and control Pandora with your voice? If you drive a 2011 Ford Fiesta, you can do so right now, by downloading the Ford Sync AppLink platform that's finally ready for primetime. Avatron has released Print Sharing, a $3 app that prints wirelessly to a wide range of printers, including shared and network printers. Sketchy shot shows 'iPad mini' in Taiwan star's hands
A post by Taiwan celebrity and race driver Jimmy Lin has drawn attention this evening as he showed what appeared to be a small iPad. The photo of a "toy iPad mini" showed what appeared to be an almost literally shrunk 3G iPad with very few changes. While the photo was too small to show whether or not iOS is on the screen, it did show a working device using an interface layout consistent with what Apple uses.

AirPlay, Apple TV authentication and protected iTunes content
Erica continues her hacking explorations into the Apple TV and AirPlay.
Here's the thing. As far as I can tell, you can play back any content that plays back in your iPhone's iPod and video applications on any Apple TV. That includes DRM content, all that encrypted stuff that normally requires you to register your computer with your iTunes account.
Somehow the AirPlay protocol sends over enough information to the Apple TV to allow that device to gain at least temporary authorization to play the media you stream to it. From what I've been able to find out, that authentication step seems to be transmitted via a simp

Instagram hits one million users, plans expansion
The popular photo-styling and sharing iOS app Instagram now has over one million registered users only three months after its debut, according to a post on the company's blog. The free app lets users take pictures with their device's built-in camera, style them using retro-flavored filters and upload them to popular social services. The company believes that this is "only the beginning" and has plans for a more expansive web site, more funding and an Android version of the app planned for 2011, according to an interview with TechCrunch.

Camera+ 2.0 is in the App Store, contains 328% more wow
We let you know yesterday that Camera+ was coming back to the App Store with a host of changes. The development team has given us the heads-up that Camera+ 2.0 ($1.99) is now available in the App Store, and the changes are amazing.
The team at tap tap tap obviously listened to feedback from customers and reviewers. The SLR screen that made the app so unique was also a bit of a UI hindrance, so it's been removed. The entire user interface was reworked to make it much more intuitive and unified.

FCC cites Android as reason for softened neutrality rules
The FCC in voting for its net neutrality rules cited Android as a reason for softening the conditions for wireless neutrality. The official statement from chairman Julius Genachowski (PDF) argued that relatively open mobile operating systems meant there was less need to prevent "unreasonable discrimination" as there was on the desktop. DVDs are playing back on my Apple TV! (And it's not really that hard to do)
The Unicorn has landed! Rainbows! Starshine! Skittle poo! It's like Christmas inumDecember! So why this exuberance and excitement? My Apple TV is right now, this very second, even as we speak, playing back a DVD of Finding Nemo. It's seriously awesome.
And it's not even all that hard to do if you're a bit of a do-it-yourself-hacker. Although, seriously, if the command line frightens and intimidates you, it's time to move on to the next TUAW post.

Motorola tipped for Verzion 4G phone, nervous about iPhone
Motorola will be one of the first to have an LTE smartphone on Verizon's just-launched network, the carrier's COO John Stratton reaffirmed on Tuesday. Confirming earlier hints, Stratton said Motorola would be "right there" when Verizon moves 4G from modems down to the phone level.
