Gresso outs iPad with gold logo, African Blackwood case
Russian-based design house Gresso, which specializes in making ultra-exclusive and expensive versions of popular consumer electronics, has now unveiled its latest creation. Apple's iPad has received the company's treatment, which includes 200-year-old African Blackwood for its case and an 18K gold Apple logo. No other details about the Gresso iPad are known, including what model has been selected.

MSI Wind U270 netbook emerges with 1.6GHz AMD Zacate processor
We weren't actually expecting to see any Zacate-based machines until CES 2011 kicked off in earnest, but it looks as if MSI is hoping to snag a little wind from the sails of its competitors. In a small Taipei-based event, the outfit quietly snuck out a machine that we can only assume will become official in the coming days -- the Wind U270 netbook is an 11.6-incher with a 1.6GHz Zacate processor, 4GB of RAM, a 320GB hard drive and no optical drive to speak of. France may tax non-Windows tablets, spark Archos lawsuit
France may soon approve extending a levy that could charge extra for the iPad and most other high-end tablets, a local trade publication warned late on Monday. The country would expand an anti-piracy levy already covering smaller devices to charge as much as 12 euros ($16) extra for any tablet running a non-desktop OS and with more than 40GB of storage. Only Windows tablets would be completely exempted, although the Galaxy Tab's 32GB cap would keep it exempt in its current form as well.

Sanwa intros iPhone 4, iPad HDMI adapter
Japan's Sanwa this week revealed an HDMI adapter that will let iPhone 4 and iPad users output 720p videos to external displays. Photos and presentations can also be sent, the latter over Keynote, while any GoodReader file is compatible as well. The adapter isn't compatible with earlier devices and wouldn't have much effect, as they're limited to standard definition.

Dear Aunt TUAW: How do I move my iPhoto library to a bigger drive?
Dear Auntie TUAW:
Ever since getting an SLR camera as an early Christmas gift (during Thanksgiving actually), I've been taking high-res photos at a rapid clip -- and filling up my hard drive quickly in the process. In the last month, I've halved my disk space. Is there a good way to offload your iPhoto library to an external drive? I'd still want to be able to access it regularly, so perhaps via a wireless drive like the Time Capsule?
If that's not a smart way to go, what other alternatives are there? Should I just lower the image resolution on my camera from Large to Medium or Small? Seems like it would be kind of defeating the purpose of having such a good camera, but with photos running around 12 MB each (and videos exponentially larger), I'm worried about running out of HD space in January.

South Korea rolls out first commercial electric bus service, we are green with envy
The Seoul Metropolitan Government has just rolled out a world first by instating commercial, all electric bus service in the city. We've previously seen pilot programs and trials, but actual working commercial service has never been previously implemented. The program, developed in agreement with Hyundai Heavy Industries and Hankuk Fiber, and the buses themselves can run up to about 52 miles on a single charge (which takes about 30 minutes), and have a maximum speed of about 62 miles per hour. App Store freeze has ended
Most of the country still has lots of winter to go through, but one thing has already thawed: the Apple App Store. Every year, Apple freezes changes on iOS apps during the holiday, in part to give the team that does updates a little break, and because sales tend to be quite volatile as people unwrap iPhones, iPod touches, and (this year for the first time) iPads on Christmas. But today marks the un-freezing of the store, so top paid and free charts will go back to changing at the whims of App Store shoppers, and app developers are free to submit updates and change app prices and descriptions again for the first time since last Thursday.

Android nearing 200,000 apps but growth leveling out
Android could be close to reaching the 200,000 app mark based on stats from AndroLib. The unofficial count has Android Market passing the milestone at about the turn of the new year. It's unlikely so far to have crossed the mark despite the graph, as the officially hit 100,000 apps in October, when AndroLib was registering about 140,000 apps.

Confirmed: A million Apple TVs sold
All Things Digital has confirmed that rumor last week that Apple expected to sell a million of the new Apple TV units. One million of those little black boxes have wandered out the doors of Apple Stores everywhere, and presumably been plugged into televisions to stream content from iTunes, Netflix, and any other videos wandering around out there. Looks like the lower price point of under $100 combined with that new functionality and the AirPlay tricks have turned this "hobby" into an actual business.

Hitachi bestätigt Gespräche mit Foxconn

iPod nano hacked, may open door to future jailbreak
The latest generation iPod nano has been hacked, a preliminary step that may lead to an eventual jailbreak. The sixth generation iPod nano became available in September of this year and featured an operating system that superficially resembled iOS. Under the hood, the mini MP3 player runs an alternative operating system that has been poked and prodded by devs since its launch.
Developer James Wheaton is the first to crack open the nano and install a Springboard hack that let him remove an app and create a black space. To achieve this hack, Wheaton first figured out how to bypass the cache comparison on the device. The cache comparison scans the Springboard file and reverts it if modifications are discovered. Hitachi confirms talks for deal with Foxconn
Rumors of talks between Taiwanese contract maker Hon Hai Precision Industry, the parent company of Foxconn, have been confirmed by Hitachi's president on Tuesday. Hiroaki Nakanishi said Hitachi needs capital to expand in the LCD panel sector, and is in talks with Hon Hai and other companies, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday. Foxconn's highest-profile customer is Apple for its iPads, iPhones and Macs.

CNN has a list of their biggest tech "fails" of 2010 and the #1 spot is the iPhone 4 antenna issue, aka "antennagate." Perhaps it was inevitable that the hubris of Apple's past decade would eventually catch up with the company.

HTC Desire HD gets FCC approval with North American 3G, might be for Telus
Just over a week ago we caught a glimpse of a device that claimed to be a Telus-branded version of the 4.3-inch HTC Desire HD, a beast that has yet to make the leap to North America and doesn't officially exist in any variants that fully support the 3G frequencies used there. Researchers create ultra-fast '1,000 core' processor, Intel also toys with the idea
We've already seen field programmable gate arrays (or FPGAs) used to create energy efficient supercomputers, but a team of researchers at the University of Glasgow led by Dr. Wim Vanderbauwhede now say that they have "effectively" created a 1,000 core processor based on the technology. To do that, the researchers divvied up the millions of transistors in the FPGA into 1,000 mini-circuits that are each able to process their own instructions -- which, while still a proof of concept, has already proven to be about twenty times faster than "modern computers" in some early tests. New York Times updates iPad app to stop constant crashing
It's about time. Ever since the NYTimes for iPad app replaced the lame Editors' Choice app it has been tough sledding trying to read the news. It often took a long time to load, and then before displaying a single story, it crashed. I re-installed the app, and that made things better for a while until the crashes returned.
I wasn't the only one having trouble. The app store reviews of the previous version were brutal.
The app was updated over the holidays, and I'm happy to report it is far more stable. I can actually read the news without having to constantly re-launch the app. The only downside I experienced was I had to log in again. If I had been commuting or on a trip and

Ubuntu Linux to enter tablet fray with Tenq's P07
Ubuntu will get its first entry into the same tablet arena filled by Android and iOS with a newly uncovered model. Tenq's P07 is running Ubuntu Netbook 10.10 is more optimized for touch as a result. Editorial: rechargeable batteries are a vintage gadget's Achilles' heel
One of my favorite activities around the holidays is visiting my ever-growing collection of discontinued (and often hilariously outdated) mobile hardware that I keep in storage. It's an annual tradition for me -- an opportunity to pull stuff out of the box, make sure all the devices, accessories, and documentation are insect- and vermin-free, clean the battery contacts, blow off a years' worth of dust, and generally check that everything's in good working order. Gibson wins Paper Jamz injunction, retailers ordered to pull stock
The Paper Jamz, they have jamz-ed their last -- at least for now. Gibson's won that injunction against WowWee for modeling its 2D toy guitars on famous axes like the Flying V and Les Paul without permission, and since retailers like Walmart, Amazon, Best Buy and Target were all named in the lawsuit, they'll have to pull PaperJamz from their shelves. Lawsuit over app privacy targets Apple and developers
Apple and several mobile developers are facing two separate lawsuits over the collection and unauthorized sharing of private user data with third-party advertising networks, according to iLounge. The first lawsuit, Freeman vs. Apple, was filed in a northern California federal court and targets applications such as Pandora, Dictionary.com, The Weather Channel, Toss It, Text4Plus, Talking Tom Cat and Pimple Popper Lite.

Periodic table blasted onto a single human hair using ions, human reportedly wants his hair back
We've seen the Torah inscribed on a surface the size of a pin, and the atomic pen making inroads into even more impressive feats, but tiny writing never ceases to amaze us. Now, it seems, the entire periodic table of the elements has been scribed onto a single hair -- that of Martyn Poliakoff, Professor of Chemistry at the University of Nottingham. The project involved magnifying the hair under an electron microscope, and 'writing' on it with ions using an ion beam writer to imprint the entire table of elements onto the hair. As you'll see in the video after the break, the results are quite impressive albeit very small.

VAT increase poised to raise Apple's UK prices
An upcoming raise in the rate of the UK's value added tax, or VAT, will have a minor but noticeable impact on the prices of Apple hardware, reports observe. As of January 4th the VAT will rise from 17.5 percent to 20 percent. The adjustment will add as little as £1 in extra cost in the case of the iPod shuffle, but up to £85 or more in the instance of a 12-core Mac Pro.

Nissan hopes to fill Leaf orders by summer 2011, we wonder if things will ever be warm again

Japanese paper pegs PlayStation Phone for spring launch

A sequel to Olympus' entry E-PL1 mirrorless interchangeable camera has been tipped today that hints at a significant boost to its image quality and a unique sharing trick. The E-PL2 should have a slightly sleeker body but will focus on movies with a new 14-42mm, f3.5-5.6 kit lens designed to work more effectively with video capture. Checks at retail confirm high demand for the iPad, says Wedge Partners analyst Brian Blair. TUAW's Daily App: Burn the Rope
This isn't an iOS port of the great Flash game You Have To Burn the Rope, though an upgraded version of that would be nice to have. Instead, this one is a pretty inventive puzzle title by a company called Big Blue Bubble. The idea is that you touch anywhere along a rope to start up a flame, and then you have to keep that flame burning by tilting your iPhone so that the fire always burns up.
It works really well as a physics puzzle game, and each level has certain percentage goals of the rope to burn (and later there are enemies to burn through as well), and whenever your flame splits off at different intersections, you need to watch each side of the flame and make sure it has vertical room to grow. Apple is allowing iOS apps to broadcast private data to advertising networks without consent, a recent lawsuit alleges. Filed on December 23rd in a federal court in San Jose, California, the suit notes that iOS devices transmit at least a basic amount of information without permission by way of their UDID (Unique Device Identifier). iPod nano hacked, could lead to new functionality
The iPod nano has been hacked to allow the device to boot with modified files. In this instance, the file that has been modified is the Springboard Plist. While the device has not been jailbroken, the work around could open up the door to the device being rooted. This could then lead to redundant movie capabilities and applications like the Calendar, carry over code from the firmware used on the previous generation iPod nano, being re-enabled.

Tapulous reports holiday downloads double from last year
Tapulous, the maker of the Tap Tap Revenge franchise of iPhone and iPod Touch games, tells Business Insider's Dan Frommer that downloads of the popular game are up 100 percent over last year. The latest edition, Tap Tap Revenge 4, was just released a week ago, and saw peaks over Christmas of over 45,000 copies per hour. Of all the Arduino projects we've seen 'round here, this is certainly one of them! Using nothing but a Graphics LCD, an Arduino, and a WebSocket server he wrote using Python / Tornado, this young engineer created a system that allows him to connect to the server with his iPod touch (or any browser, we suppose -- although he's apparently only tested this with Chrome on his desktop PC) and draw a design on the web browser. Like son, like father? Evidently that's exactly how things are playing out, with papa BMW following the footsteps of MINI in the run-up to 2011. Just days after the MINI Connected app found itself situated in the App Store, a BMW Connected app has done likewise. Netbook prices are dropping to the point where cost is increasingly the only factor in trying to stave off tablets like the iPad, industry observers said Monday night. Using prices in the netbook field's Taiwanese home turf as an example, a 10-inch, single-core ASUS Eee PC had been cut to a relatively low $288 to create a wider price gap with tablets while most others were down to $339. We're still a ways off from living our dream iPod nano watch scenarios, but here's a small step in the right direction. As the story goes, on a flight home James Whelton booted up an iPod nano with a modified SprinBoard plist file that "removed" an app from the screens and replaced it with a blank space. Google's plans to revamp the Android interface in Honeycomb were exposed in more detail this evening with the posting of a pre-release version of the platform's media player. The unfinished app primarily shows a much more polished interface with transparency and a much more visual album picker. We don't know much about it yet, but it's looking like we might be getting a taste of 3D on the go after all at CES. We'd hoped it would be with Nintendo's 3DS, but that report turned out to be a bust, and now LG is apparently going to pick up the slack with a new mobile digital TV that has a 3D display. We know virtually nothing about the set at this point, but we're thinking it will be glasses-free and are speculating that, after its appearance in Vegas next week, it'll never be seen in the US again.

Konami's 3DS dating simulator uses facial recognition to block virtual cheating
We may still not have an official price for the Nintendo 3DS, but it looks like you can now at least count on yet another unique gaming experience not found on other handheld systems. Konami recently announced that its "Project Loveplus" dating simulator for the system will not only take advantage of the system's 3D capabilities, but that it will also include a so-called "boyfriend lock" that uses facial recognition to prevent any virtual cheating. Macintosh Portable prototype appears on Ebay
A seller going by the ID "zieglerc" on Ebay has put up for auction a prototype model of the Macintosh Portable, the first Mac "luggable" computer from late 1989. The prototype comes complete a case, FCC non-compliance warnings and a "property pass" allowing it to be checked out from the company's headquarters. The unit is described as being in nearly mint condition with the exception of a non-functioning (but included) original battery.

Handmade icon pillows given as gifts for Christmas
We've seen Apple app icon pillows before, but these are pretty excellent -- TUAW reader Dan G's girlfriend hand-sewed them for him for Christmas. That's the brand new iTunes icon on the right there (though I expected it to be a little more blue), and on the left is the Firefox icon. We won't tell her she got the fox backwards if you won't, Dan.

Gefährdete App: Quick Snap nutzt Lautstärkeregler als Kameraauslöser
Seit Mitte des Monats dümpelt Quick Snap (1,59 Euro, iTunes-Link) im App Store vor sich hin. Seit gestern macht die Nachricht die Runde, dass die Kamera-App das iPhone unzulässig modifiziert. "Banned" volume-snap feature returns in new camera app
In a strange reversal of policy, Apple on December 15th approved an iOS camera app called Quick Snap whose main feature is a hardware hack called "Volume Snap" -- allowing the use of the volume button to act as a "hard shutter" button for the camera, Wired magazine is reporting. This exact feature was the reason a top-selling competitor -- Camera+ -- was pulled from the App Store in August and only this month allowed to return (minus that feature).

Gorillaz iPad album, called The Fall, out now

Logitech says Google hasn't asked it to halt Google TV production
It was a bit too late to fend off a more than 3% drop in its stock price, but Logitech has finally come out and refuted those rumors that it was asked to halt production of its Google TV hardware until a significant update could be rolled out. As VP of corporate communications Nancy Morrison explains, Logitech "has not been asked by Google to suspend production of its Google TV products," and that such a suspension wouldn't even be necessary as "every Logitech Revue companion box will receive free over-the-air updates whenever Google and Logitech release software enhancements."
