Apple posts free developer documentation for iBooks users
If your resolutions for 2011 include teaching yourself to be a Mac or iOS developer, then Apple just gave you a very nice Christmas present.
According to a tip from our old friend Nik Fletcher at Realmac Software, Apple has recently put a number of Apple Developer Publications books into the iBookstore for free. This makes it simple to grab these books, which range from "The Objective-C Programming Language" to "iOS Application Programming Guide," for reading on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
As our resident developer and iOS guru-ette Erica Sadun points out, it's "kinda dumb" to have the books running on the device you're trying to develop for. It would be nice if Apple eventually made a version of iBooks available for Mac OS X.

Wireless carriers openly considering charging per service
That slide above is no joke -- it comes from a marketing webinar put on by two companies that supply Verizon, AT&T and Vodafone as clients, and it describes a system that identifies customer internet activity and charges a different rate for using Facebook than watching YouTube, while allowing access to Vodafone services for free. Yes, that's basically the nightmare scenario for net neutrality advocates. Here at TUAW, we get a chance to see a lot of iPad and iPhone docks. In fact, you may have seen our recent iPad dock holiday gift guide. One new iPad dock that we didn't know about at the time the gift guide was being published was the PadDock 10 speaker dock from SMKLink (US$99.99).

Handy-Verkäufe in West-Europa legen um 7,5% zu

Anthropologie has developed a new way to destroy trees by offering a US$98 iPhone dock created from a round of hickory wood with branches attached and that's pretty much it. No speakers. No clock. Princeton and iOS DHCP still not getting along
It seems that every time Apple squashes one DHCP bug in iOS, another one pops up.
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is a system of automatically assigning IP addresses on a network, which mostly happens behind the scenes and without users noticing anything about it. Without an IP address, a device such as an iPhone, iPad, or any sort of computer cannot access the network.
DHCP uses a "lease" system where a computer can use a specific IP address for a certain length of time. In contrast to a static addressing scheme (where each device has a permanently-assigned IP address), DHCP allows many more devices to use the network -- as long as they are not all online at the same time.

Microsoft Kinect soll präziser werden

Die Aussprache von ASUS? Uns hier in Deutschland hat das eigentlich nie beschäftigt, aber auf Englisch gibt es klanglich eine verwirrende Nähe zu einem gewissen Körperteil. ASUS hat nun eine neue Aussprache-Regelung eingeführt, die uns diese liebenswürdige Dame im Video nach dem Break beibringt. Der Name ASUS leitet sich übrigens vom geflügelten Pferd Pegasus her, dessen Aussprache laut unseren Kollegen im US-Amerikanischen ironischerweise näher bei der alten Version liegtebenfalls zu hören nach dem Break.

Notion Ink veröffentlich zwei Videos zum Adam Tablet

Zusammen mir einem Exklusiv-Interview sind bei AndroidPolice zwei Videos zum Adam Tablet von Notion Ink erschienen (siehe Quelle-Link). Darin wird das schicke neue Eden-UI dokumentiert, Tests zum Pixel Qi-Bildschirm fehlen aber nach wie vor, so dass es uns schwer fällt zu beurteilen, ob der Hype um das Teil gerechtfertigt ist. Das zweite, qualitativ bessere Video hat Notion Ink später nachgeliefert, angeblich wurde es bei Tageslicht gedreht. Es zeigt ein bisschen mehr vom UI, einen schnellen PDF-Reader und die virtuelle Tastatur des Adam - hinter dem Break!

Gingerbread vom Samsung Nexus S aufs Galaxy S portiert (Videos)

Das Nexus S ist nicht mehr das einzige Smartphone mit Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Supercurio vom XDA-Developers-Forum hat es geschafft, das neueste Android-OS aufs Samsung Galaxy S zu portieren. Der Port ist der gleiche wie beim Nexus S, aber einige grundlegende Funktionen wie Stimme, WiFi und GPS funktionieren noch nicht. HTC HD2 and Nexus One get some Gingerbread crumbs

Samsung pulls Froyo update for Bell's Vibrant after reports of fried internal storage
We have no idea why Samsung's having such a hard time delivering its overdue promised Froyo upgrades worldwide for the Galaxy S series, but it's not looking any easier for them this weekend: the only Canadian Galaxy S to get upgraded so far, Bell's Vibrant, has just had its update pulled. Seems a healthy number of users attempting the upgrade using Sammy's Kies desktop software ended up with inaccessible internal storage, which sucks for a variety of obvious reasons -- and that would be the apparent reason for the removal of the update.
