Is the new Macbook Air eating into iPad sales?
Although it's too early to come to any firm conclusions, Apple's new thin and light notebook computer may actually be hurting sales of the iPad. If true, this would be a distinct turn-around of the trend since the tablet landed earlier this year. In the months since its debut the iPad is generally credited with leading to a collapse in netbook sales.

Confirmed: Lenovo LePad headed to US in 2011
Lenovo led us to believe that that our LePad chances weren't terribly good, but CEO Yang Yuanqing recently told the Wall Street Journal that the Android tablet is indeed slated for a 2011 US launch. Though Lenovo's COO Rory Read was pretty clear that the LePad wouldn't ship stateside until a tablet-ready version of Android was ready to go, it seems the company's now confident that Google will deliver the goods. Steve-mail says Keynote '11 to have Airplay, Apple TV capabilities
TUAW received a tip from reader Jared today, who sent us a copy of an email sent to him from Steve Jobs in response to a question he had asked. We verified the email headers, and it looks like the real thing.
In his email to Jobs, Jared asked if the new Apple TV would accept presentations via an iOS device or a Mac, and told his Steveness "if it will, I will go buy two at an apple store tonight." Jobs replied, "It's all coming soon. Stay tuned."

At least once a week, I use the iSight camera on my iMac act as the video source for TUAW TV Live. While it works very well, I sometimes need to add a second camera to the Mac in order to demonstrate something on an iPad or other device. That just hasn't worked out too well, since many of the cameras that I've checked out are USB and tend to conflict with the iSight. And sometimes, I've just wanted a camera that I could take anywhere around my office to capture video.

Ex-Apple, IBM exec Mark Papermaster lands at Cisco
Recently departed Apple Senior VP Mark Papermaster has landed a new gig, signing on with Cisco as vice president of the Silicon Switching Technology Group. Papermaster's resume includes time working on chip design for IBM as well as his brief tenure running the hardware engineering group at Apple.
The Cisco job certainly won't have the same kind of profile as the Apple position but it is certainly important. Papermaster will lead the development of chips for Cisco switching equipment. Cisco hardware runs a lot of the infrastructure that makes up the internet as well as corporate networks.

Ping ab sofort auch auf dem iPad!
Klammheimlich hat der kalifornische Mac-Hersteller Apple heute sein Social Network “Ping” auch in der iTunes-App auf dem iPad aktiviert. Nachdem das Musiknetzwerk bereits seit einigen Wochen auf der iPhone-App den Nutzern zur Verfügung steht, wurde nun also auch das iPad für den Dienst freigeschaltet. Jolibook: Pressebilder zum Cloudnetbook

Das 10,1-Zoll große Jolibook von Jolicloud - ein speziell auf Netbooks ausgelegtes Betriebssystem - gab sich bisher kamerascheu. Jetzt sind auf Flickr einige wenige Pressebilder aufgetaucht, die das aus der Ankündigung schon bekannte Deckeldesign mit verspieltem City-Motiv, eine dicke Akku-Rolle auf der Rückseite (wobei diese auf einem der Fotos dünner ausfällt) und die Innenansicht zeigen. Rundum Plastik, aber wenn sich das entsprechend auf den Preis auswirkt, wollen wir nicht meckern.

Lemmings-like Spirits for iPad out now
Spirits for iPad, which I saw and played back at Indiecade this year, is out now on the App Store. The game is US$4.99, but as a premium iPad experience, it's worth it. The whole thing is extremely relaxing, and the art style is quite well done. If you enjoy Lemmings-style puzzle gameplay where your goal is to get a set of autonomous creatures to a level exit using their various abilities, you'll really enjoy finding your way through the 40 handmade levels in Spirits.

Grand Theft Auto trilogy finally coming to the Mac
Man, it's about $*#(ing time. The storied (and dare I say classic?) Grand Theft Auto trilogy, featuring GTA 3, GTA Vice City, and GTA San Andreas, is finally coming to the Mac thanks to Transgaming. Of course, it's about ten years late -- the first game in the grouping came out in 2001 on the PS2. On current-gen gaming consoles, gamers have enjoyed Grand Theft Auto IV for a few years, and Rockstar released Red Dead Redemption earlier this year and is priming for a game called L.A. Noire. I'm surprised these haven't been released on the Mac yet; especially with Steam on the platform, you'd think there would have been a port at some point.

Windows Phone 7 beats iPhone 4 and Android ... in a grilling contest (video)
Le's face it, it's a question the world's been dying to know the answer to: which of the T-Mobile G2, HTC Surround and iPhone 4 will withstand a (literal) grilling the longest? Well, just in time for a mildly singed breakfast today, we have the answer. Kein AirPlay fürs iPhone 3G in iOS 4.2? (mit Video)

Mit iOS 4 und dem iPhone 3G gab es schon diverse Probleme. Erst lief es schnarchlangsam, dann strich Apple dem 3G das Game Center. Jetzt hat 9to5mac.com entdeckt, dass im GM von iOS 4.2 das Feature AirPlay nicht mehr läuft (siehe Video nach dem Break). Es soll aber in einer früheren Beta noch vorhanden gewesen sein. Britische Provider verzichten auf Palm Pre 2

Wer bei Handyvertragsende die SIM-Karte nicht zurückgibt, zahlt Strafgebühr

Sieben Mobilfunkprovider kassieren vom Kunden nach Ende des Handyvertrags eine Strafgebühr, wenn er die SIM-Karte nicht zurückgibt. Das ergab eine Umfrage der Verbraucherzentrale NRW. Talkline verlangt 9,97 Euro, bei sechs Partner- und Tochterunternehmen der Drillisch AG sind es sogar 29,65 Euro. Diese Gebühren werden in einer der letzten beiden Rechnungen gelistet. Raffiniert, denn das ist schnell übersehen, und nur wer den Pfandbetrag entdeckt und die SIM-Karte innerhalb einer Frist von zwei bis drei Wochen zurückschickt, bekommt das Geld erstattet. Japan's Ministry of Defense shows off flying surveillance drone
It may not be quite as menacing as some other surveillance drones, but this new flying contraption recently unveiled by Japan's Ministry of Defense should at least get the job done for what seems like a somewhat limited purpose. Are Macs envious of Windows 7's ability to play Blu-ray discs? Microsoft seems to think so, as seen in this stop-motion web video highlighting a Windows 7 laptop computer and a jealous MacBook. The MacBook is blown away by the PC's ability to play a Blu-ray disc of Avatar, saying "it feels like we're really in it," and thoroughly enjoying the experience of such a life-like movie. Apollo News reader shuts down and restarts with some RSS content missing
If you were enjoying using the Apollo News reader on your iPhone or iPad, you probably noticed that it stopped getting content for the last couple of days. In fact, the developers turned it off because they are in the middle of a conflict with some content providers.
These disputes are nothing new. The excellent newsreader Pulse had a tiff with the New York Times, but it was finally settled. The Apollo app was created by some former Bing and Google engineers, and it worked well and had an excellent presentation of content from various news sites.

Found Footage: iPad used as protest sign
As if you needed yet another example of how there's no limitation to the uses people will find for the iPad, here's another one for you: an iPad as a protest sign.
In a recent Lithuanian protest, observers noted and recorded a video of one industrious person who made his own app -- or, possibly, just a video or web page -- to display his own protests in animated form upon an iPad. There's just never enough room on those giant poster boards to get your message across, so why not get their attention with flashing messages on an iPad taped to a piece of wood, right? Given, it's an expensive sign to make, but at least it gets the word out.

Android 2.2 update for Samsung Epic 4G leaks out
We're still waiting on official Froyo builds for the American Galaxy S variants, but they seem to be getting close. How close? Well, close enough so that you can taste a leak for the Epic 4G if you like to live dangerously. The binary comes conveniently pre-rooted by the source and has a handful of known issues -- most notably some sluggish / buggy web browsing -- but we guess that's the price you pay for stepping out on the bleeding edge. Let's hope an official release isn't too far behind.

iTunes 10.1 erschienen
Zwei Tage nach Mac OS X 10.6.5 hat Apple heute das erwartete Update für iTunes über die Softwareaktualisierung veröffentlicht. iTunes 10.1 ist 55 Megabyte gross und verbessert Stabilität und Leistung von Apples Multimediasoftware. Ausserdem ist es Voraussetzung für die Synchronisation von iPhones und iPads mit iOS 4.2, welches für die kommenden Tage erwartet wird. UK carriers say 'thanks but no thanks' to the Palm Pre 2
