Verizon FiOS Flex View shows off VOD across TV/PC/mobile screens, will stream your files in 2011
Verizon's showing off the full capabilities of its Flex View service, already available on a number of its mobile phones, which brings FiOS TV On Demand even when you're away from the cable box. Up to five devices (all set-top boxes in the home collectively count as one device) can be authorized for viewing of any titles rented through VOD and can even be played offline on PCs running its Media Manager software or smartphones. Final Cut Studio update supposedly due next year
Frustrated by the Final Cut delay, consultant Dustyn Gobler sent sent Steve Jobs an email asking for status update. Jobs supposedly replied (we can't confirm that Gobler did in fact receive a message back from Jobs) with "A great release of Final Cut is coming early next year."
Hardmac reported in September that the Final Cut delay was due to "significant setbacks." Specifically, their source said that differences between the team responsible for Shake and the team working on Motion are partly responsible, and representative of the overall difficulty in uniting all of the suite's applications.

One million Chinese cellphone users reportedly infected with zombie virus
Viruses have been making the rounds on cellphones for quite a while now, but it looks like China has now been hit by a particularly troublesome one. According to Shanghai Daily, a so-called zombie virus disguised as an anti-virus app has infected more than one million cellphone users in the country, and it's left users' phones vulnerable to the malicious hackers that created the virus. Apple TV now in Austria, Italy, Spain, Mexico, Switzerland
Apple has greatly expanded the international reach of the new Apple TV, bringing it to Mexico and Japan, as well as several European countries including Austria, Italy, Spain and Switzerland. iPad developer receives phone call from Steve Jobs
Seattle-based iPad developer Ram Arumugam received a phone call from Steve Jobs after expressing frustration over his app's rejection. "I was very surprised," he told The Seattle Times. "I was not even sure whether [Steve Jobs] would have time to read the e-mail."

Dell intros XCD28 and XCD35 Android phones for India
If Windows Phone 7 isn't your thing and the upcoming Venue doesn't interest you -- or hey, if you just live in India -- you might be interested to know that Dell has just introduced a pair of new India-specific (for the moment, anyway) Android phones designed specifically to be sold for a song without getting a carrier subsidy involved. First up, the XCD28 sports a 2.8-inch display (hence the name), a 3.2 megapixel cam, 200MB of internal storage expandable with up to 16GB worth of microSD, and FM radio; it sells for Rs. 10,990 (about $247) devoid of a contract. AMD posts graphics roadmap, teases 6990 and mobile chips
AMD's Financial Analyst Day bore additional fruit today after a presentation (PDF) showed many of the details of its early 2011 graphics. Along with the existing 6850 and 6870, the company has confirmed three high-end desktop graphics cores. The 6970 should be the true replacement for the 5870, while the 6950 is a sequel to the 5850. The 6990 would be the fastest of all and will most likely have two 6950 chips paired together, much as the outgoing 5970 has two 5850 chips.

iPad adoption increasing among corporations
The iPad is rapidly moving beyond its role as consumer device and infiltrating the enterprise. A new survey conducted by BoxTone Mobile Service Management indicates that three-quarters of corporations will deploy the Apple tablet in the next year. Twenty-five percent are deploying the slates already.
IT professionals and executives at 800 companies were interviewed for the survey. Google Nexus S is the Samsung GT-i9020?
We've already established that the Nexus S is almost certainly a Samsung -- but what else do we know about it? Well, a quick search for pictures taken with a Nexus S on Flickr and Picasa produced results, believe it or not, and some of those users' albums had been using a Samsung handset with model number GT-i9020 just a few days earlier. If we had to guess, a recent firmware update changed the EXIF identifier for these shots from the code to the actual retail name -- Nexus S, that is -- which explains the switchover. Google Nexus S is real, gets leaked by Best Buy
Google's rumored second Nexus phone has been confirmed today through a teaser (since pulled) on Best Buy's site. An ad promoting the Nexus S appeared touting the "Pure Google" device coming during the holidays. While an image link that would have identified the phone was broken, its alternate text identified it as belonging to T-Mobile, which has usually been the home of stock Android phones like the first-wave Nexus One, G1 and G2.

Twitter adds Ping functionality to user pages
Earlier today, Twitter announced that it has integrated Apple's Ping into users' home pages. Now, Twitter users can view each others' Ping activity, listen to song previews and link to/purchase music from iTunes directly from tweets posted to Twitter.com.
Here's how it works: First, log into your Ping account and click the new "Connect to Twitter" button. A window pops up requesting your Twitter credentials. You'll receive a confirmation and a list of Twitter contacts who have also enabled Ping sharing. Then you're done! The new Ping information will show up at Twitter.com for you.
Apple introduced PIng a few months ago, and has struggled a bit during its initial growth period.

Is this the Nexus S?
Woah, what do we have here? A new "In Store" web-based flier from Best Buy Mobile has this little nugget on its front page: a previously unseen Galaxy S, running stock Android (possibly 2.3, based on the green icons and black notifications bar) and harboring what looks to be a front facing camera. Sounds like a Nexus S to us! Paired with this morning's little Nexus S slip-of-the-tongue from Best Buy, we're starting to get our hopes up. Taiwanese Apple suppliers may be forced to raise prices
While the modern global economy has allowed companies in far-flung parts of the world to get into manufacturing, one of the many issues they face is exchange rate fluctuations. Electronics manufacturers in Taiwan are currently feeling the pinch as the Taiwan dollar has climbed more than other currencies in the region, jumping 2.5 percent in the past month and 7.2 percent in the past year. Each percentage point of exchange rate increase translates to 0.5 percent of profit margin according to Wintek, which produces touch panels for many Apple devices.
Suppliers like Wintek rarely manage to achieve the sort of enormous profit margins that Apple

Facebook hat schon wieder ein Special Event angekündigt. Dieses Mal geht es, das kann man der Einladung die mit Luftpost-Dekorändern und dem Facebook-Mobile Inbox-Symbol verziert ist unschwer entnehmen, um Messaging. Bevor es wie bei MySpace zu purem Spam verkommt ist da aber auch dringend nachzubessern. Jobs calls developer following iPad app rejection
Apple CEO Steve Jobs personally called an iPad developer after his app was rejected, notes the Seattle Times. Ram Arumugam, the creator of Economy for iPad, says he turned to a private API to cope with a problem in the app's onscreen keyboard, which wasn't retracting after typing was finished. The app was correspondingly blocked from the App Store, prompting Arumugam to appeal to the review board and Jobs himself.

iTunes Ping and Twitter unite for contacts, music sharing
Apple and Twitter today said they had reached a deal to integrate Twitter accounts with Ping. Those who use the micromessaging service can both find other users who've connected their accounts to Ping as well as post any music and commenting activity on Ping and on Twitter at the same time. AMD slide sparks talk of chips in Macs, elusiveness
Rumors of AMD hardware in Macs gained fuel late Wednesday after a slide from the semiconductor firm's Financial Analysts' Day drew attention. The shot implied that Apple was a partner for Fusion chips and showed the iMac and Mac Pro. AMD Senior PR Manager Chris Hook was quick to tell Fudzilla that Apple was just a regular AMD partner for the Radeon graphics in both systems, but he would neither confirm nor deny that Apple would go for AMD's all-in-one CPU and graphics combinations in the future.

Dropbox update is iOS 4.2 friendly, good to photos, and fixes bugs
Among the 16 iPhone updates that greeted me this morning was version 1.3.1 of the free Dropbox app, which adds improved photo support and a number of bug fixes.
A quick jog through the release notes shows that iOS 4.2 compatibility was a major contributor to the update, particularly since it is expected that the new OS will arrive shortly.
Photos are now handled differently than they have been in earlier versions. There is persistent photo caching, which means that standard image file formats (not PDFs) are cached on the device for quick viewing of photos even after leaving the app and returning. Radeon HD 5550 in Radeon HD 6390 umbenannt

As if Instapaper wasn't useful enough, version 2.3 for iPhone and iPad was released late last night and brings with it a long list of stellar features. My personal favorite is OmniFocus support. Here's how it works.

New York Times to launch bestseller list for e-books in early 2011
The New York Times has dropped some PR on us this morning, making an official announcement that it will begin to publish a bestseller list for e-books in early 2011. The current NYT bestseller lists -- which are divided into several categories -- are considered by many to be the definitive metric for a book's success. The Times will have two separate lists covering fiction and non-fiction when it launches, drawing on information from various retailers, and will be independently verified by third party company RoyaltyShare. Next Final Cut Studio due early next year, says Jobs
A new version of Final Cut Studio is coming soon, according to a brief e-mail from Apple CEO Steve Jobs. "A great release of Final Cut is coming early next year," a terse message sent from Jobs' iPad reads. The mail was sent in response to a complaint from a post-production consultant, Dustyn Gobler, who argued that companies need to know Apple's software roadmap in order to properly invest hundreds of thousands of dollars. New York Times starts up e-book bestseller lists
The New York Times today planned to run a bestseller list just for e-books. The list will be separate from the paper list but will appear in the Book Review both online and in print versions of the newspaper. An independent tracker, RoyaltyShare, will monitor sales from a collection of digital bookstores and will help validate the data to ensure that it's accurate, an issue which the Times said was currently a problem in the e-book field.

LaCie introduces Philippe Starck designed USB 3.0 portable drive
LaCie has long been associated with producing external hard drives for Macs, having created a wide array of FireWire drives. Now that the old standard is moving toward obsolescence, the accessory maker has now released a fresh USB 3.0 version of its Philippe Stark designed portable drive.
Fortunately, LaCie has at least partly addressed the fact that Apple has neglected to install USB 3.0 ports on any of its products. If you have a Mac Pro or older MacBook Pro with PCI Express or ExpressCard slots, you can get an adapter for the new drive.

Boxee Box gets the requisite teardown; would you look at that heat sink!
Lest you forget, the Boxee Box is a capital C computer, just like Google TV. In fact, both products share nearly identical processors, with the Intel CE4110 in Boxee and the CE4150 in Google TV, each clocked at 1.2GHz. Turns out, much of the mass of the Boxee Box is used for the heat sink and fan that are cooling that sucker, as revealed in iFixit's timely teardown of the media powerhouse. 'Hulu for magazines' on Android first as pressure on Apple
A joint storefront from top publishers to sell tablet magazines, Next Issue, will launch on Android first and not the iPad, its CEO Morgan Guenther said today. While there weren't any technical obstacles to an iPad version of the store, Next Issue said it would go with an Android version first since it was a "very important tablet platform" and also important on phones. Support for Apple would come in time, he told AllThingsD, but only the Android version would be ready for the early 2011 launch.

Evernote hits 5 million users
Cloud memory service Evernote has reached 5 million users and continues to grow, according to an official statement on the company's blog. The service is gaining tens of thousands of new users per day and has recently seen its highest daily revenue from premium users, plus big jumps off of Apple platforms, on Windows, Android, and BlackBerry. The five millionth user also marks the fastest million users the company has earned, as you can see from the blocked-off sections in the chart above. Cisco steigert Umsatz und Gewinn im ersten Quartal
Cisco hat gestern nach Börsenschluss Zahlen für das erste Geschäftsquartal 2011 (bis 30. Oktober) vorgelegt. Der Umsatz des Unternehmens kletterte gegenüber dem Vorjahreszeitraum um 19,2 Prozent auf 10,75 Milliarden Dollar (7,8 Milliarden Euro). Der GAAP-Nettogewinn stieg um 8 Prozent auf 1,9 Milliarden Dollar (1,4 Milliarden Euro). Der Non-GAAP-Gewinn pro Aktie erhöhte sich um 16,7 Prozent auf 0,42 Dollar.

Keine neuen Apps über Weihnachten
Wie schon im vergangenen Jahr wird auch Weihnachten 2010 iTunes Connect nicht erreichbar sein. Das bedeutet, dass von 23. bis 28. Once upon a time, it was possible to dial a cell phone in cold weather without removing your gloves, provided the gloves weren't too fat and the physical buttons on the phone weren't too small. In this modern age of smartphones dominated by capacitive touchscreens, it takes either bare skin or perhaps a refrigerated sausage in order to activate the virtual controls.

HTC Media Link DLNA media streamer dances through the FCC with 802.11n WiFi
This certainly isn't the first media streamer we've seen but the very fact that this non-smartphone sports HTC branding makes our hearts flutter with curious anticipation. Christian Oecking als Chef bei SIS bestätigt
Christian Oecking ist ab sofort Vorsitzender der Geschäftsführung der Siemens IT Solutions and Services GmbH (SIS). Das hat das Unternehmen heute mitgeteilt. If you're the proud owner of a Samsung Focus or Omnia 7, you can scratch a pretty major item off the list of basic features missing from WP7: USB tethering. A couple of sites have come upon a quick and relatively easy hack to enable using your handset as a 3G modem on Microsoft's new platform. Hack-Anleitung: AirPrint für freigegebene Drucker unter 10.6.5 aktivieren
Aus unerfindlichem Grund strich Apple kurzerhand die Möglichkeit aus Mac OS X 10.6.5, im Netzwerk freigegebene Drucker mit AirPrint nutzen zu können. Mit einer kleinen Anleitung lässt sich diese Funktionalität nachbauen. Allerdings sollte diese Hack-Lösung, die auf Dateien aus unbekannter Quelle aufsetzt, nur eingesetzt werden, wenn man sich der Risiken bewusst ist.

Red Hat hat seine Linux-Distribution Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 freigegeben. GPGMail nach Update auf Mac OS X 10.6.5 und Mail 4.4
Wer per PGP/GPG unter Mail verschlüsseln will, hatte es seit jeher ein wenig schwerer. Neues Apple TV in der Schweiz angekommen
Seit heute Donnerstag lässt sich die neue Apple-TV-Box auch in der Schweiz offiziell über den Apple Store (Affiliate-Link) bestellen. Die elegante schwarze Box ist zum Preis von CHF 129.- erhältlich. Eingeführt wurde die neue Apple-TV-Generation bereits Anfang September, bisher war sie jedoch nur in wenigen Ländern erhältlich. Grund für den Verkaufsstart in der Schweiz dürfte die Lancierung von Film-Downloads über den Schweizer iTunes Store sein. Apple TV ist ganz darauf ausgelegt, gestreamte Medien auf einem TV auszugeben. So lassen sich beispielsweise direkt über Apple TV Mietfilme aus dem iTunes Store anschauen. Dank AirPlay können Inhalte auch direkt von einem iPhone, iPod oder iPad auf das Apple TV gestreamt werden.

Apple möglicherweise an AMDs Fusion-Prozessoren interessiert
Wie GigaOM berichtet, gibt es von AMD Hinweise, dass Apple den Einsatz von Fusion-Prozessoren in Erwägung zieht. AVG kauft Android-Sicherheitsspezialisten DroidSecurity

Film-Angebot im Schweizer iTunes Store freigeschalten
Donnerstag ist Film-Tag — das scheint sich auch Apple hinter die Ohren geschrieben zu haben: Bereits seit Freitag letzter Woche lassen sich über den Schweizer iTunes Store Filme kaufen und mieten (macprime.ch berichtete), nun hat Apple das Film-Angebot offiziell über den Schweizer iTunes Store verlinkt und die Übersichtsseiten über die verschiedenen Film-Genres sind aufgeschalten.
Apple hat das Filmangebot über die letzten Tage etwas vergrössert: es umfasst geschätzte 2000 Filme. In deutscher, italienischer und französischen Fassungen — jedoch ist die Anzahl verfügbarer Filme je nach Sprache sehr unterschiedlich.
Auch die aus den anderen Ländern bekannten «iTunes Extras» sind im Schweizer Store verfügbar, so bietet der Kauf des neusten PIXAR-Filmes «Toy Story 3» neben dem Film auch zusätzliches Videomaterial, die z.T. nicht auf der DVD erhältlich sind.
Während im iTunes auf iOS-Geräten bereits der Video-Reiter zu finden ist, versteckt sich das Film-Angebot im iTunes Store auf dem Desktop noch immer hinter

NEC's LifeTouch Android tablet wasn't exactly turning heads for all the right reasons when it was first unveiled it back in June, but it looks like the company has managed to at least slightly refine it for its official launch today. iTunes Store gets movies in Japan
Apple tonight began offering movies through the iTunes Store in Japan. The expansion gives locals both translated versions of English-language movies like Toy Story 3 as well as Japan-specific titles, such as Ototo, Odoru Daisousasen The Movie 2. Viewers get the extended rights available in some countries, starting with the usual 30 days to start watching and 48 hours to finish watching once playback has started.

Motorola slaps Microsoft with a pair of patent infringement lawsuits, says it's such a shame
Looks like Motorola's about to fight a legal battle on two fronts -- Apple on one hand, and Microsoft on the other. Microsoft fired the first shot last month with a nine-patent ITC complaint and a second salvo alleging that Motorola was charging unfair licensing fees for 802.11 WiFi and H.264 video last week, it's now Moto's turn to retaliate with a pair of legal complaints. What to expect from iOS 4.2 on iPhone
Most of the focus on the forthcoming iOS 4.2 update has been on the iPad, and rightly so. The iPad is finally getting marquee features that most iPhone users have enjoyed for months, like multitasking and folder support. iOS 4.2 doesn't bring as many changes to the iPhone as it does to the iPad, but it does introduce a few new features to the iPhone. iOS 4.2 is expected to go live later this week, but we'll give you a brief rundown of the new features today. Motorola countersues Microsoft, threatens Windows and Xbox
Motorola tonight filed a lawsuit in retaliation for Microsoft's own lawsuit over Xbox 360 patent royalties. The new complaint alleges that Microsoft is violating 16 patents and is now targeting Windows and Microsoft's mobile platforms in addition to the Xbox-related H.264 video, Wi-Fi and password patents that prompted Microsoft's concerns. The Windows patent claims are the most direct and assert that the OS itself as well as Exchange, Outlook Windows Live Messenger and object-oriented code.

Boxee to carry Hulu Plus and Netflix, gets new UI
Boxee at its Brooklyn launch event revealed that the Boxee Box and the software platform would be getting a handful of key launch partners. Hulu Plus is the highlight and will see Boxee offer the $10 monthly streaming service on its media hub. The company didn't say if the free web version will be blocked outright, but it said free wouldn't be an option and promised a "real" Hulu designed for TV rather than just the browser.

ChartFire brings dynamic charting types to FileMaker
Dacons has released ChartFire, a FileMaker plug-in for Mac and Windows that brings full chart-making capabilities to the database program for the first time. Users can produce 3D and 2D pie, bar and line charts from an unlimited number of data series and adjust charts dynamically. TARMA offers iOS corporate management features
Device management has arrived for corporate iPad and iPhone use, as equinux has released its TARMAC 1.3, featuring Mobile Device Management for iOS 4. The TARMAC software, which connects iOS devices to enterprise networks, now allows IT managers to set up, register and maintain corporate iPads and iPhones wirelessly. Once set up, IT admins can push updated user profiles, change settings or remotely wipe the iOS devices. Fox starts blocking Google TV
Google today faced another major setback as viewers discovered that Fox had joined SyFy and other majors in blocking Google TV. Anyone trying to watch Bones, The Simpsons and other shows on Fox.com are given an error claiming the content is "not compatible with your device." Fox was thought to have been uncertain but now appeared to have settled on banning the platform's Chrome web browser.

Mac OS 10.6.5, released earlier in the day, includes a long list of fixes designed to address security vulnerabilities. Apple has improved its AFP network protocol with new validation and error signaling, while the password server has been corrected to prevent users from logging in with outdated passwords. Apple didn't buy Wi-Gear, according to Wi-Gear CEO
If you were hoping for surefire proof Apple was about to start making stereo Bluetooth headphones so that you didn't have to make a difficult choice among the many already-great options on the market, you're not in luck. A rumored acquisition of iMuffs manufacturer Wi-Gear has turned up false, with the CEO Mark Pundsack himself refuting the claims. Turns out Wi-Gear and its IP are up for sale, and the company has ceased operations due to lack of funds, but Apple apparently hasn't picked up the tab. Mark's response to the rumored buy? "Two words: 'I wish!'"

iHome details its AirPlay-focused iW1 speaker
iHome today explained some of the workings of its upcoming AirPlay speaker. Now called the iW1, the audio system will primarily stream from an iTunes computer to the speaker and should mostly use an iOS 4.2 device as a remote, although the feature should theoretically allow direct-from-device streaming. The hardware will allow a Sonos-like multi-room audio system with the option of piping audio to every iW1 on the local network or just individual units.

Fox.com joins NBC, ABC and CBS by blocking Google TV
Looks like Fox has finally made a decision, following the other major networks, Hulu and several cable channels by opting to block streaming video on its website from Google TV devices. Jabra rolls out Stone2 on November 21st, just as UFO-like as the original
Bluetooth headsets look strange enough hanging off your ear as it is, so why not maximize the shock factor? Jabra's Stone is equal parts strange and elegant, and it would appear that the newly-announced Stone2 is making no attempt to diverge from that formula. Apart from some minor tweaks, the overall curved design and matching charging dock appear to be largely unchanged from the original model, but the Stone2's claim to fame is the fact that it's now a completely touch-free experience to use: if a call comes in, you just say "answer" or "ignore" and the phone will do your bidding. Wi-Gear: Apple acqusition rumor untrue
Wi-Gear chief Mark Pundsack today dismissed claims of an Apple acquisition. He didn't deny that co-founder Michael Kim had left to become an iOS Bluetooth Engineer at Apple but said the company had gone out of business solely due to a lack of funds. FCC looking into Google Street View Wi-Fi debacle
The FCC has launched an investigation that could accuse Google of violating federal law through its unintentional Wi-Fi scraping with Street View cars, an official said Wednesday. The hunt was in response to calls by advocates at the Electronic Privacy Information Center to check whether the scanning broke eavesdropping laws. If found to be intentional, the harvested data could lead to fines of up to $50,000 for each identified snooping instance, the WSJ noted.
