ZTE Peel may give iPods 3G on Sprint November 14
Sprint's upcoming ZTE Peel 3G-capable iPod touch case has been given a tentative date in a leak this afternoon. The wireless sled could reach its carrier on November 14. BGR didn't get the price of the case itself from its source but understood it would qualify for the same $30, 1GB contract-free plan as the Galaxy Tab.

Samsung 'Nexus Two' still on, delayed due to major glitch
Samsung's repeatedly rumored Google halo phone, still informally known as the "Nexus Two," may still be on but may have been hit by a major setback. Tips on Friday repeated beliefs that it wouldn't be at the November 8 event but was originally to have been launched close to that date. Employee testing reportedly found a "serious hardware issue" shortly before release, TechCrunch said.

Xserve End Of Life: Some opinions and ideas about Apple's server strategy
As an Apple Consultants Network member who has installed his share of Apple Xserves, I have mixed emotions about Apple's decision today to pull the plug on the only "real" server that they've been selling. On the one hand, Apple hasn't been selling a lot of the pricey pizza boxes to big business, so it makes sense that Apple would simply re-purpose existing products -- the Mac mini and Mac Pro -- as servers. On the other hand, I think it sends mixed signals to the enterprise market about Apple's commitment to business.

Because we veteran Mac sites have to stick together, we're sending congratulations out to the good folks over at Mac OS X Hints, who yesterday turned the ripe old age (in blogging years, anyway) of ten years old. The site, created by Rob Griffiths and now run by Macworld, continues to be a terrific source of hints, new and old, about cool things to do with our favorite operating system. Roku rolls out version 2.8 software update with refined interface
We've already seen a preview of it, and Roku has now finally rolled out its version 2.8 software update for everyone to try out themselves. The biggest changes all concern the interface, and include improvements like a new seasonal home screen banner, the ability to re-order channels on the home screen, a revised Channel Store with a grid of icons and, last but not least, a home screen clock. Look for the update to gradually roll out to Roku boxes over the next few days, or simply head to the settings menu to force a download it right now if you just can't wait.

FTC nominates first Chief Technologist
The Federal Trade Commission said Thursday that it had nominated its first Chief Technologist. Princeton Computer Science and Public Affairs professor Dr. Ed Felten will provide advice on technology issues and how they apply to government policy covered by the Commission's work. Early Windows Phone 7 apps twice as expensive as on iPhone
An early look at the first wave of Windows Phone 7 apps by O'Reilly has shown that they typically cost much more than on the iPhone. With 1,400 apps now in Windows Phone Marketplace, the mean price for a WP7 app is $6.16, or about 80 percent higher than the $3.43 on an iPhone. A higher ratio of apps are free on WP7, at 22 percent free versus just 10 percent on the iPhone, but the cost is almost always significantly higher when paid.

iPhoto '11 updated, still not up to par
It's a shame -- iPhoto is likely the most heavily used of all the iLife applications. There are simply more people taking digital pictures than there are using GarageBand or iMovie. iWeb, left languishing by Apple with few updates and no new features, has probably forced people to look elsewhere for quick and easy web publishing. iDVD appears to be on life support too, which brings iPhoto to the fore of media sharing on the Mac.

Skyfire reappears at App Store
Recently pulled by its developer due to overwhelming demand, the Skyfire web browser has temporarily reappeared at the App Store. The title circumvents iOS' inability to play Flash video by means of remote transcoding to HTML5. Nikon patents back mirrorless cam, wireless photo preview
Nikon's plans for its first mirrorless, swappable lens camera gained momentum late Thursday with the discovery of a Japanese patent for a prototype design. The body is similar to one seen in earlier patents but suggests it may skew more towards the mainstream. Apple's example Mac app prices land around $15-20
Reader Shane did a little zoom and enhance on Apple's promo image for the Mac App Store, and divined some potential prices for Apple's official apps. These same apps are the ones that set the pricing bar on the iPad, and so if these are real (and not just photoshopped in), then they're the first official indication we've gotten of just where Apple imagines pricing should be on the App Store. FTC appoints Ed Felton as agency's first Chief Technologist
It may come as a bit of a surprise to some considering that seemingly every company and government agency has one these days, but the Federal Trade Commission has never had a Chief Technologist. It's now finally filled that gap, however, and has appointed Edward W. Felten to the post. As you may be aware, Felten's a professor of computer science and public affairs at Princeton and the founding director of the university's Center for Information Technology, but he's probably best known for his efforts to expose problems with electronic voting machines, and for his vocal advocacy against DRM -- he also uses his

Apple TV Hacking: hackers, grooveshark, Bluetooth stack
Family responsibilities have kept me from posting about many amazing developments going on in the Apple TV hacking community this past week but I assure you that things continue to move ahead quickly and in promising directions. Apple has introduced a new promotional section to the App Store, the Essentials Hall of Fame. "More than two years since launch, we're many apps wiser," a description reads. Skyfire browser back in the App Store, but in limited quantities
This just in: the Skyfire browser, which was released earlier this week and then quickly pulled when the company's servers were overwhelmed, is being released back into the App Store. But before you do what I did and rush out to purchase it, note that it is only being released in "batches." That means that for those of us who are seeking a way to watch Adobe Flash video on our iPhones, iPod touches, and iPads may have to wait a bit longer.
Sure enough, the first batch is apparently sold out, as I was unable to find it in the store either in iTunes on my Mac or in the App Store on my iPhone. Skyfire CEO Jeff Gleuck is recommending that people hoping to buy Skyfire

iPhone cables surface at T-Mobile stores
The sighting of an iPhone/iPod compatible sync cable at some retail stores has again spawned rumors of a new carrier agreement with T-Mobile USA. Some industry observers are reading additional significance into the statement yesterday by the CEO of T-Mobile's corporate parent that not having the iPhone is hurting the carrier. T-Mobile has been mentioned several times as a possible alternative carrier for the iPhone, but neither Apple nor T-Mobile has confirmed those rumors.

TUAW Hands On: 4.2 jailbreak
With nothing better to do (plus a few pending reviews that require a jailbreak), I decided to give the redsn0w 4.2 jailbreak a try. A 4.2 GM 2nd generation iPod touch was my test device. The jailbreak is not very hard to do: download a copy of the current 4.1 firmware (it's on Apple's servers), point redsn0w to that firmware, and then follow directions to place the device into DFU mode.
Unfortunately, the results were not positive. This is not the fault of redsn0w; it is set for 4.1 jailbreaks, not for 4.2. Rather, the jailbreak succeeded, but the patches (at least for my 2g iPod) caused too many operational issues under 4.2 for me to recommend this approach to others. Apple blew chance at getting Kinect technology
Apple's approach to negotiations may have cost it the technology that powers Microsoft's Kinect, an anecdote revealed today. The CEO of technology creator PrimeSense, Inon Beracha, explained during a flight that he had shopped the motion control technology first to Apple but that the company had asked him to sign 'crippling' legal deals and non-disclosure agreements. Pandigital Novel PRD09TW e-reader hits the FCC
Pandigital may have not exactly hit a home run with its first Novel e-reader, but it looks like it might already be coming back for another try with a new model. That device recently hit the FCC with the model name PRD09TW, and it seems to be mostly identical in appearance to the current Pandigital Novel, with the notable exception of four buttons along the bottom. In Nordkorea ticken die Uhren anders. Auch verfügt das Land nicht über die beste Infrastruktur und Ökonomie. Early Windows Phone 7 apps nearly as expensive as on iPhone
An early look at the first wave of Windows Phone 7 apps by O'Reilly has shown that they typically cost much more than on the iPhone. With 1,400 apps now in Windows Phone Marketplace, the mean price for a WP7 app is $6.16, or about 80 percent higher than the $3.43 on an iPhone. A higher ratio of apps are free on WP7, at 22 percent free versus just 10 percent on the iPhone, but the cost is almost always significantly higher when paid.

iOS 4.2 to support MIDI
It's come to light that the upcoming release of iOS 4.2 (due in November) will support all-out MIDI. According to Mike Keller, writing for PC World, Core MIDI on iOS 4.2 should work just as Core MIDI does on Mac OS X, meaning that your iDevice running iOS 4.2 will communicate with other MIDI compatible devices and hardware via USB (using the iPad's camera connection kit USB adapter) or WiFi, using Apple's own MIDI APIs.

Chimei may pitch in on iPad display production for 2011
Taiwan's Chimei Innolux may be giving Apple an increasing amount of help making iPad displays next year, CLSA Asia-Pacific Markets said on Friday. It claimed that just 10 percent of the touchscreens would be made by Chimei next year but that it would gradually play a more important role over the course of the year, taking up 15 percent of the load in the spring, 20 percent in the summer and 30 percent next fall. The analysts expected tablets like the iPad to account for six percent of Chimei's revenue in 2011 and 10 percent a year later.

Schiena: Designer Buchregal hat Rücken
Wer auf Bio-Design steht, ist hier bei diesem Bücherregal richtig aufgehoben. Pietro Travaglini hat dieses flexible Möbelstück entworfen, dass in der Struktur der menschlichen Wirbelsäule nachempfunden ist. Vielleicht nichts für traumatisierte Rheumatiker, aber das "Schiena", so wie das Teil sich nennt, dürfte sich sonst durchaus gut machen. Why is T-Mobile selling an iPhone cable?
T-Mobile USA has been an oft-rumored darkhorse to help kill off AT&T's iPhone exclusivity in the country -- and for the life of us, we can't think of a good reason that the carrier's corporate stores would be carrying iPhone charge / sync cables now other than in preparation for a launch. It's interesting to note that Deutsche Telekom boss Rene Obermann in part blamed the lack of the iPhone in the States as a driving factor in its third quarter churn rate a meaningless musing, perhaps, but it could've been a little bit of foreshadowing, too. Microsoft faced an unintentional but symbolic loss on Friday as Sean Siler, one of the key stars the "I'm A PC" ads, was confirmed to be leaving the company. In an e-mail sent out to co-workers, the IPv6 lead noted a "family situation" required that he move to the East coast and that Microsoft couldn't offer him a job in the area. LaCie bringt USB 3.0 auch für Macs (manche)
Es ist kaum zu glauben, aber während sich Steve Jobs konstant weigert USB 3.0 für Macs einzuführen, prescht LaCie schon mal mit einem eigenen Treiber für ihre neuen d2 und 2big Platten vor. Publishers leery of doing business with Apple
ABCi, the interactive media arm of the Audit Bureau of Circulations, has issued a new report showing that American and Canadian publishers feel that mobile technology is very important to their futures. As a result, many of these publishers are working on making content available on mobile phones, tablets, and e-reader devices. The report, covered in Poynter Online, shows that a full 60% of respondents feel that making a mixture of ad-supported free content and premium paid content available to consumers is the best way to succeed in the mobile market.

Foxconn reports 14th suicide of 2010
Electronics manufacturer Foxconn has reported its 14th worker suicide of the year, according to Reuters. Though the dead person is not being identified by name, he is said to have been a 23-year-old man, found outside one of Foxconn's Shenzhen campus dormitories earlier today. "The police are carrying out an investigation into this matter and Foxconn is cooperating fully with that process," a company statement reads. "We have expressed our condolences to the family of the deceased employee." China's official Xinhua news agency reports that the man fell.

Apple quietly adds Mac Pro server config post-Xserve
Apple in the wake of plans to phase out the Xserve has brought out a new, server-oriented configuration of the Mac Pro on the Apple Store. The new version has the same 2.8GHz quad-core Xeon as the entry model but focuses on upgrades friendlier to the pre-installed copy of Snow Leopard Server. It more than doubles the RAM to 8GB and carries a second 1TB hard drive for options like a RAID mirror or keeping app performance unimpeded by the OS.

Die Einführung der rechtssicheren E-Mail wird offenbar später erfolgen als bisher geplant, da sich die Verabschiedung des dafür benötigten De-Mail-Gesetzes hinzieht. Nach Informationen der Zeitung Die Welt geht die interne Planung des Bundesinnenministeriums von einem abschließenden Durchgang im Bundesrat erst am 11. Februar aus. iTunes Movies ab sofort in der Schweiz
Lange mussten wir Schweizer warten, doch nun hat Apple den Filmverkauf über iTunes auch hierzulande gestartet. Noch wurde das Filmangebot in der Schweiz zwar noch nicht offiziell angekündigt, doch über die Suchfunktion im iTunes Store lassen sich die Filme bereits abrufen. Nicht alle Filme lassen sich kaufen, einige scheinen lediglich über ein Mietmodell erhältlich zu sein. Für die Kauffilme liegen die Preise zwischen 10 und 20 Schweizer Franken. Heute wurde durch eine offizielle Pressemitteilung durch Apple bekannt, dass die Xserver-Serie auslaufen wird. Die aktuelle Gerätegeneration wird noch bis zum 31. Januar verfügbar sein. Dannach wird es keinen Xserver mehr geben. Apple begründet den Ausstieg aus dem Geschäft mit Rackservern damit, dass man das Produktportfolio verschiebt. T-Mobile blames lack of iPhone for poor US sales
Among the four national mobile phone carriers in the United States, T-Mobile is clearly the laggard in terms of subscriber numbers. This comes despite low prices and highly-regarded customer service. Rene Obermann, CEO of Deutsche Telekom, T-Mobile USA's parent company, lays the blame squarely on the lack of an iPhone to sell.
The U.S. remains one of the few major markets with a single iPhone carrier, and T-Mobile isn't it. In the third quarter of this year, T-Mobile USA gained just 137,000 new customers. Most of those went for prepaid service rather than the smartphones.

Apple's Xserve hits end of life, order yours before Jan, 31
Farewell, Xserve. While the G5 version was once the server behind one of the world's fastest parallel supercomputers, Apple's powerful but slow-selling line of rack-mount servers has now reached the end of its life cycle and will no longer be offered after January 31, 2011. As an enterprise-oriented config, the Xserve has never received much attention during Apple's splashy product introductions, instead quietly getting speed bumps and bigger drives.

Apple to drop Xserve after January 31
Apple today sent notice that it was phasing out the Xserve. The rackmount server will be discontinued as of January 31, 2011, and the currently available 160GB, 1TB and 2TB Apple Drive Modules will ship through the end of 2011 or until stock runs out. The company plans to honor AppleCare warranties and will have repair parts for up to seven years in California and five years in the rest of the world.

Voice Fantasy is a weird little app from Square Enix, creators of the Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest series of role-playing games. You may remember Song Summoner, the original RPG created for the iPod a while back (that later came to the iPhone as well). That game had you creating soldiers with songs. Voice Fantasy has you creating heroes with a different audio source: your voice. Just pull up the create-a-hero screen, speak or sing into the iPhone's mic, and the game will create a custom-made hero just for you from whatever auditory groans or screams you can come up with.

Wie Apple auf der firmeneigenen Webseite bekannt gab, wird der Vertrieb des Xserves per 31. Januar 2011 eingestellt. Damit wird Apple erstmals seit fast neun Jahren keinen Rack-Server mehr anbieten. Für viele kommt dieser Schritt nicht überraschend. 2008 liess Apple bereits das Xserve RAID auslaufen, ausserdem wurde der Xserve seit Frühjahr 2009 nicht mehr aktualisiert. Apple empfiehlt einen Umstieg auf den Mac Pro Server oder alternativ auf den Mac mini Server und hat einen entsprechenden Transition Guide veröffentlicht.

Die Software der neuen Lumix GF2 ist noch nicht ganz fertig, deshalb sind die Sample-Bilder mit Vorsicht zu geniessen, aber schon jetzt machen sie einen guten Eindruck. Die kleinste Micro Four Thirds ist obendrein leichter als alle zuvor, hat ein Touchscreen-GUI, nimmt Video jetzt bis zu 1080p in AVCHD auf. Big cable loses 500,000 subscribers in Q3, we neglect to send flowers
Last quarter was the first time ever that US pay TV subscription rates were down. Now, according to GigaOM's calculations, big cable suffered another set back in Q3, waving goodbye to over 500,000 subscribers in total. Comcast was saddled with over half of the carnage and lost 275,000 customers, while Time Warner took a 155,000 subscriber hit. Charter Communications and Cablevision fared slightly better, but still added 63,800 and 24,500 respectively to the industry pit of despair.

Update für iPhoto 9.1 erschienen
Apple stellt ab sofort das 177MB große Update für iPhoto 9.1 zur Verfügung. Dies ist bereits das zweite Update innerhalb der ersten zwei Wochen.
Kurz nach der Veröffentlichung Ende Oktober im Rahmen des “Back to the Mac“-Events hatte Apple mit dem Update auf 9.0.1 Abhilfe bei möglichen Datenverlusten von iLife 09 auf iLife 11 geschaffen.

Man darf keine Berührungsängste in Sachen DMG-Downloads bei Oneclickhostern haben – aber mit der so “veröffentlichten” iTunes 10.1beta und den ebenso verfügbaren iOS 4.2-ISPW-Files kann man auch ohne Developer-Account sein iDevice auf die Version 4.2 updaten. MacBook Air: Batterie hält zwei Stunden länger ohne Flash

Nachdem Ars Technica sich mal die Mühe gemacht hat ein MacBook Air 11-Zoll ohne Flash zu testen, wissen wir auch, dass Flash nicht ohne Grund nicht vorinstalliert ist. Sechs Stunden durchgehendes Webbrowsen haben sie ohne Flash hinbekommen. Mit Flash nur noch 4. Hauptsächlich hatte das im Test wohl mit Flash-Anzeigen auf Webseiten zu tun, ihr habt also noch Hoffnung mit einem guten Adblocker ähnliches herauszubekommen aber doch hier und da mal ein Flashvideo zu sehen, ohne dass eure Batterien gleich schlapp machen.

Dell drops BlackBerry for its workers, hands out WP7 instead
Dell dealt a blow to RIM tonight and said it would switch all of its BlackBerry-equipped staff to its own phones. The more than 25,000 workers currently assigned a BlackBerry will instead switch over to the Windows Phone 7-based Venue Pro. Company representative David Frink expected the switch to start in the near future but told Reuters the rollout would be gradual.

Mac OS X 10.6.6 seeded while 10.6.5 still awaiting release
The Mac OS X 10.6.5 update hasn't been publicly released yet (although it's expected any day now), but according to 9to5 Mac Apple is already seeding builds of 10.6.6 to developers.
This is indicative of a few things. First, OS X 10.6.5 is likely finalized and ready for public release. Second, the tiny size of the 10.6.6 update (only 3.7 MB) and its small list of changes (mostly related to the forthcoming Mac App Store) indicate that the 10.6.6 update will likely come relatively soon after 10.6.5's release.
Finally, it's probable that access to the Mac App Store will require updating to OS X 10.6.

Mac OS X 10.6.6 seed arrives before final 10.6.5
In an unusual move, Apple has begun seeding builds of 10.6.6 before the previous version, 10.6.5, has actually been released to the public, according to a report from AppleInsider. The new build contains no specific issues, but contains "developer support for and renewing App Store receipts." This refers to the upcoming Mac App Store that will be a future part of 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and next summer's 10.7 (Lion) release.

iOS 4.2 hasn't even been publicly released yet, but the gold master candidate has already been jailbroken using Redsn0w. In fact, using instructions posted on Covering Web, it's been possible to jailbreak iOS 4.2's gold master since the moment it was released. MacTech 2010: Daniel Jalkut on the Mac App Store and more

Apple updates HP drivers in Snow Leopard
Apple today pushed a large (387.47MB) update via Software Update to owners of various HP printers, scanners and all-in-ones under Mac OS X 10.6.1 or higher (Snow Leopard). Details on what models specifically have been added or updated in the new v2.5.2 update were not available, but a current list of all the HP models supported under Snow Leopard is now available at Apple's web site. Having Flash installed on your MacBook can reduce battery runtime by 33%
As if Adobe Flash didn't have enough going against it already. Now it appears that, according to tests done by Ars Technica, having Flash installed on your laptop can reduce your battery runtime by a third. Ars Technica was running battery tests on the new 11-inch MacBook Air. With the Flash player plug-in installed, the 11-inch Air got just 4 hours of battery life. Once they deleted Flash, the Air's battery life rose to a whopping 6 hours.

ARM chief shrugs off Intel tablet threat, sees deluge at CES
Intel's Oak Trail platform for tablets shouldn't pose any threat to the iPad or other ARM-based tablets, ARM's own CEO Warren East said today. Samsung showcases 4.5-inch flexible AMOLED, may actually mass produce this one
For all intents and purposes, every single flexible display we've seen over the past few years has eventually been filed in the "awesome things that'll never materialize" drawer. There are exceptions to that rule, mind you, but we've largely been frustrated by how often these things pop up at trade shows and then vanish forever. Samsung Mobile Display, however, is hoping to change that.
