iPad 2 case gets hands-on, supports iPod touch-inspired back
The second generation iPad's design details may have been confirmed on Monday through the first known instance of a hands-on with a pre-release case (video below). Coming from the same outlet that described design details, the look compared the new case to an original iPad and noted that the new frame was, as claimed, much more like that of the 2010 iPod touch. It showed the larger back speaker and a camera hole just large enough to match that of the iPhone 4's, albeit without flash.

Hands full of gifts to return after Christmas but still need to make a call with your iPhone? Well don't worry, as NoseDial is here to help you out. NoseDial is exactly what the name implies that it is -- a visual dialer for your iPhone that lets you scroll through your contacts by tilting your phone and then call them by pecking at their picture with your nose. Sure, you still need to be able to somehow tilt the phone with your hand or some other way to move through your contacts, but if your fingers are otherwise occupied with bags and/or inside your winter mittens, at least you can still make a phone call using just your nose.

Beer cannon fires beer out at your iPhone's demand
We've seen an iOS device used to control a soda machine before, but here's a setup with a more, ahem, practical application for New Year's Eve: a beer cannon controlled by an iPhone. Pirate iOS app store uses 'reverse BitTorrent' for crack
The Hackulous community that offers Apple iOS device users the opportunity to download free apps, among other things, has just announced new possibilities. Chief among them is what is being called a 'reverse BitTorrent' system for jailbroken devices that will boost the number of cracked apps available from the web. Mobile Hunt, found in Installous 4, will prompt users with apps not currently in the Apptrakr database to upload the app to the cloud in pieces.

App Store approaches 400,000 accepted apps
Apple is on the verge of reaching 400,000 submitted iOS apps, notes Asymco's Horace Dediu, quoting tracking website 148Apps. Over 390,000 apps have been uploaded to Apple so far, at a rate of just under 1,000 new titles per day since 2008. Dediu points out that Apple has not actually hit 400,000 in sales, since roughly 65,000 apps are no longer active, pulled either by Apple or the developers.

News: China Unicom lowers price on iPhone 3GS
China Unicom has lowered its price on the iPhone 3GS amid shortages of the iPhone 4 in China. People’s Daily reports that Unicom is now selling 8GB 3GS units for 3,999 yuan, or roughly $600, a 1,000 yuan (~$150) discount over the previous price. Notably, these prices are for no-contract units—customers who sign a two-year contract will receive a refund of as much as 3,792 yuan. The iPhone 4 is not available from Unicom without a contract.…

Apple said last week that it expected its new Apple TV to cross the one million mark in sales before Christmas, and it's now quietly confirmed that it's managed to do just that. Foxconn may buy control of Hitachi's mobile LCD production
Foxconn's parent firm Hon Hai Precision Industry may get control of Hitachi's phone and tablet display production through a stock deal, Japan's Nikkei newspaper said on Monday. Plans are reportedly underway to buy a majority take in Hitachi Displays for $1.2 billion. The Japanese company in turn would use the money to build a display factory in its home country that would serve Foxconn's aims.

Foxconn to stay exclusive manufacturer for second-gen iPad
Foxconn will remain the manufacturer of the Apple iPad when the second-generation model launches early next year, says the Economic Daily News. T-Mobile blames AT&T again for iPhone's FaceTime Wi-Fi cap
T-Mobile has quietly put out another TV commercial (below) blaming AT&T for the iPhone's Wi-Fi only limit on FaceTime. The 30-second short has the personified iPhone 4 showing a FaceTime call to his mother, only to glitch and break up the moment he leaves AT&T's "Wi-Fi zone." Facebook for iOS, Tapulous see big iOS downloads over the holiday
As expected, we're starting to see huge download numbers for iOS from over the weekend -- as people unwrapped their new iOS devices, they also took to the App Store to pick up new games and apps as soon as they could. Facebook for iOS saw a gigantic jump in users -- as you can see in the chart above, the app saw an increase of a million users just over the holiday weekend, and has gone up by almost five million users since Thanksgiving. That's pretty phenomenal, even considering that we knew the App Store would be busy.
We probably haven't see the last of the record numbers, either -- Tapulous says that its new Tap Tap Revenge 4 app saw twice the downloads this year

What you're looking at above is a real, actual object found in the material world. It's an Etch-a-Sketch so modified, as to look like a glorious leftover from a bygone era that never was. What era, you ask? Oh, the Victorian era -- so named for the United Kingdom's longest reigning monarch -- with a great dash of fancy added into the mix. We're talking alternate history, people! A history so wonderful, so beautiful, that a lowly red plastic Etch-a-Sketch could end up both complex and inordinately heavy looking. Facebook sees sharp spike in iPhone app use
Use of the Facebook iPhone app has shot significantly upwards since Christmas, statistics indicate. While growth was relatively normal between the 24th and the 25th, active app users jumped by 397,928 between the 25th and the 26th to hit 56,332,588. The figure for the 27th is over 57.3 million as of this writing, representing a spike of about 975,000.

Do you think that FaceTime for Mac will come out of beta and be released on the Mac App Store on Jan. 6th? It would seem to be a given that Apple will release it through the App Store at some point, and January should have been plenty of time for beta testing. iPhone nano watch gets knocked off, has little to worry about it
There are run-of-the-mill KIRFs, above-average KIRFs, and this. Logitech denies Google order to freeze Revue production
Logitech today denied any involvement from Google in an alleged halt on Revue production. A carefully worded remark from the company claimed that it had "not been asked by Google" to stop making the Google TV box until February to accommodate a firmware update. As the Android-based OS can get its updates over-the-air, new features wouldn't need to wait for a change in manufacturing to flash them with new code, it said.

Apple said to increase Q1 order for iPhones to 20-21 million
At least that's the word from Taiwan-based iPhone suppliers. In a report today from DigitTimes, sources are quoted as saying Apple has upped its global shipment goal for the first quarter of 2011 from 19 million units to more than 20 million.
Even more interesting, but hardly surprising, the same sources say Apple has ordered 5-6 million phones in that run to be CDMA models. Verizon anyone?
The iPhone's 4th quarter global shipments are pegged at about 15.5 million phones, with a estimated 47 million phones shipped for all of 2010. Apple is estimated to have sold about 50 million iPhones in the previous 2 years, so if these estimates are close, and Apple sells all the iPhones it has ordered, 2011 is looking pretty good.

ComScore: Facebook overtakes Yahoo, is now the third most trafficked website in the world
ComScore, -- a common metric used to measure internet traffic -- is showing off some impressive stats these days. In the month of November, for instance, Facebook overtook Yahoo! for the first time in worldwide traffic, with the social network nabbing 648 million unique visitors while the portal named after Gulliver's Travels pulled in 630 million. New Galaxy Tab firmware bans hacks beyond iPad levels
Samsung may soon roll out a new firmware update for the Galaxy Tab that will clamp down much more tightly than Apple does for the iPad, experimenters found late Sunday. The new JM6 A, C and D builds Samsung is planning have bootloaders that are signed and prevent unauthorized firmware from running. Foxconn factory conditions still terrible, says journalist
In spite of pay raises and promises to reduce overtime, working conditions can still be dehumanizing at Foxconn's Shenzhen factory campus, says French journalist Jordan Pouille. Hackety Hack: A gift to aspiring Ruby programmers
As a perpetual programmer wannabe, I'm always on the lookout for new tools that make the mysteries of coding a little more accessible. Much to my dismay, most programming tutorials that I've come across assume some prior knowledge or that you're transitioning from some other language. So, I was delighted to discover Hackety Hack just now (thanks to Chris Amico for the tip). It's a fun new Mac app that aims to teach Ruby programming basics to complete beginners.

AT&T releases dramatic anti-texting while driving documentary
We're not sure how many more times it must be said, but seriously people -- stop texting on your cellphone while operating a gigantic vehicle at high speeds. If you're not already convinced that driving a car and trying to tap out a message on a tiny keyboard (or heaven forbid, no keyboard at all) is a poor match, perhaps the short documentary AT&T has just released will convince you otherwise. Comcast proposes $10 broadband in return for NBC merger OK
Comcast in a letter to the FCC (PDF) has proposed that it might offer very low-cost broadband Internet access as part of the approval of its NBC merger. The company suggested that it would give access to its usually unpublished Economy speeds for $10 per month to any household making $20,000 or less per year. They would skip installation fees and could even get a refurbished netbook or similar device as well as computer training.

App Review: Parcours.robo is like RoboRally... if you don't like RoboRally
Parcours.robo really, really wants to be RoboRally, the well-received 1994 board game from Magic: The Gathering designer Richard Garfield. Whether because the developer, Impara GmbH, didn't want to negotiate for the actual board game licensing rights or for another reason, the game plays a lot like RoboRally, but it's actually a sad little clone that also makes me really, really want it to be RoboRally.

AT&T has lowered its pricing on refurbished iPhone 4 units. RetinaPad allows higher-res iPhone apps on iPad
A new unofficial hack, RetinaPad, allows iPhone apps to be run in higher resolution on the iPad. Although the iPad does include a zoom option for iPad apps, this often results in ugly graphics. RIM had a complete internal panic when Apple unveiled the iPhone in 2007, a former employee revealed this weekend. Apple bringing Cherokee language support to iPhone and iPad
Apple's iOS devices currently support just 50 languages, out of thousands that are in use globally. Soon, that figure will creep up to 51. A fresh AP report notes that Cherokee Chief Chad Smith actually visited Apple and used students currently being schooled in immersion programs to "pull at the heartstrings" of Apple's brass, and eventually, Cupertino caved. For the writer -- from fiction author to enterprising blogger -- the iPad is also a very portable way to get some serious writing done, even though it wasn't originally advertised as such. That's where users came in and turned the iPad into an excellent portable writing machine. Having toted my iPad into the mountains of Arizona and across the ocean to the UK, I was able to get a good amount of writing done and have it available on my desktop with little issue.

Softbank adds NFC to iPhone 4 via special seals
Japanese carrier Softbank is planning to introduce a NFC (near-field communication) payment option for local iPhone 4 owners, reports say. Because the iPhone 4 lacks its own NFC receiver, the company will be offering special FeliCa-compatible seals that stick to the back, leaving enough space for the camera and flash. iPhone production up to 21m in Q1 with Verizon rolled in?
Apple is optimistic for not just its Verizon iPhone plans in early 2011 but for its regular GSM iPhones as well, part suppliers claimed on Monday. The company reportedly plans to ship five to six million CDMA iPhones between January and March, but has also increased its production of regular iPhones from 13 million to 15 million, giving it as much as 21 million shipments. A quick gander at Samsung's Canadian support site for the Galaxy S line reveals that two Android 2.2 updates are currently available: one for the Vibrant -- offered by Bell, Virgin Mobile, and SaskTel -- and one for the Fascinate as sold be Telus. Wunderlist: Aufgabenplaner wird teamfähig

iPad DJing has quickly become a popular if small subset of the music scene; artists like Rana June Sobhany have shown that one or two iPads and a mixer create an extremely portable deck and surprisingly varied mixes. Algoriddim is trying to take that one step further with Djay, where it's hoping to recreate much of the twin-turntable-and-mixer experience on a single screen.
