Nox Audio outs Scout earbud headset
Relative newcomer Nox Audio has just released its second headset, the earbud Scout. It follows up on the over-the-ears Specialist we reviewed back in the summer, and uses a balanced armature design to deliver what Nox claims to be strong bass, balanced mids and clear highs. The earbuds have an inline button -- the world's smallest, Nox claims -- that lets them answer or end calls and navigate tracks, along with a microphone.

Adobe is testing optimized Flash beta for the MacBook Air
Today Engadget sat down with Adobe's Shantanu Narayen and asked him what the MacBooks Air's increased battery life -- sans Flash installed -- meant for the future of Flash in the wake of HTML5. Narayen kinda dodged the question with this stay-on-message answer: "When we have access to hardware acceleration, we've proven that Flash has equal or better performance on every platform," but then went on to say that Adobe is currently testing a beta version of Flash specifically designed for the MacBook Air.

BlackBerry PlayBook first hands-on! (video)
RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie actually declined to show off the his company's tablet today on the Web 2.0 Summit stage, but in private he was more than kind, treating us to a nice long glimpse at the BlackBerry PlayBook in a quaint hotel hallway. We only got to heft the one-pound slate for a few seconds, but we got the basic feel of the device in the hand -- warm to the touch, solid if a little plasticky, with a responsive glass touchscreen up top and a bottom that's mildly rubberized. SlideRocket brings web presentations to iPhone and iPad with HTML5
Since the dawn of time, traveling professionals have sought easier ways to present on the go. Pico projectors! Netbooks! Converting presentations to video to show them on iPhones! Then there was Keynote on the iPad, and it was good. Not great, however: presenters with libraries of PPT content have had to convert them over, and keeping your decks up to date with the latest and greatest from the sales department is a drag. Wouldn't it be better and easier if there was a nice cloud-based solution that played well with Mobile Safari?

Galaxy Tab pricing in Europe slashed to compete with iPad
European pricing for the Samsung Galaxy Tab has plunged in the past couple of days in what might be a sign of early trouble for the Android tablet. In the UK, the cost of the Galaxy Tab has dropped from an already partly reduced £700 ($1,109) to £470 ($745) at major portals such as Amazon and Dixons. French pricing remains unchanged, but Amazon Germany has also dropped its pricing to about 638 euros ($859).

NewsGator has released a new app that extends Social Sites 2010 to workers who use iOS devices. The app offers browserless access to all of the content available through the desktop environment, including features enabled by the new News Stream and Idea Stream packages. Buffalo intros two new USB hard drives
Buffalo on Tuesday introduced two new hard drives, including the MiniStation Stealth and DriveStation Axis LED. The former is a portable, USB-powered drive while the latter adds a status LED meter to the existing DriveStation Axis drive. Both are preloaded with the Buffalo Tools software that aims to improve the user experience with Windows PCs. The drives are compatible with Macs out of the box as well.

Mozy 2.0 online backup improves upload speed, interface
Online backup specialist Mozy has launched an update to its service for Mac users, Mozy 2.0. The upgrade offers a more Mac-like interface, and improved transfer speeds. The latter is based on optimized bandwidth and faster file scanning. Comcast turns your iPad and iPhone into a sophisticated remote
Cable giant Comcast has released its free Xfinity TV app for both the iPhone and the iPad (we first saw a prototype demo back in May). The app allows you to browse TV listings, including the massive Comcast On Demand library. You can filter shows by genre, network, resolution (SD vs. HD) and more.
It also turns your iPhone or iPad into a remote. The main advantage here is having an on-screen keyboard, because as all cable and satellite users know, typing with a cursor is about as painful as it gets. You can change channels, and even notify friends with Comcast to watch a program at the same time.

RIM: 'no need' for native apps; 4G, NFC hinted in BlackBerry
RIM's co-CEO Jim Balsillie at the Web 2.0 Summit today argued that there was "no need for native mobile apps." In referring to the company's PlayBook versus iPad demo video, the Canadian executive argued that "all you need is the web." He stressed that the AIR and Flash foundations, the dual-core processor and the heavily multi-core aware BlackBerry Tablet OS meant the web would work and the "appification" of the web would come to an end in favor of standards.

Oprah Magazine heads to iPad
Publisher Hearst has brought Oprah Magazine to the iPad. Although no subscription options are available due to a lack of Apple support, each issue costs $4, slightly less than an equivalent print edition. Why you really shouldn't have expected more than Beatles on iTunes today
We here at TUAW, and those of you who read us and a dozen other Apple or tech blogs each day were certainly amped about a full-page takeover on Apple.com yesterday. We were subsequently let down when the veil lifted to reveal The Beatles on iTunes. Keep in mind Twitter + Ping happened via press release -- a Facebook + Ping update could also have happened inside iTunes without an update to iTunes itself, and like just merit a press release. So why did we expect more?

Jim Balsillie says BlackBerry PlayBook has a 'module cavity,' hints at NFC capabilities
He unfortunately didn't have one on hand (or at least on stage), but RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie did make a bit of news about the BlackBerry PlayBook at the now-happening Web 2.0 Summit. The first is that the tablet packs what Balsillie described as a "module cavity" -- the most obvious use for which would be to add WWAN capabilities to the WiFi-only model (something Balsillie himself suggested), although the possibilities certainly extend far beyond that. Adobe: HTML5 creeping in, Flash on Mac fixed with GPU
Adobe chief Shantanu Narayen at the Web 2.0 Summit today said that HTML5 was having a slight impact on Flash adoption. Certain areas were seeing a greater amount of use of the web standard instead of the Flash plugin. Adobe would primarily focus on advancing Flash to keep it more enticing than the more open standard.

Today is just another day I will forget.
When Apple teased "Tomorrow is just another day. That you'll never forget" on their home page yesterday I hoped it was going to be something really cool -- like cloud-based iTunes or a subscription iTunes service. When the news began to leak out that the event was the Beatles coming to iTunes finally it was cool, but a day I'll never forget? Nope.

Official Google Voice finally reaches the iPhone
After one of the longest app delays in memory, Apple today posted Google Voice for the iPhone (free, App Store). Apple's exclusive digital rights to The Beatles extend into 2011
As you probably know, Apple has secured exclusive digital rights to The Beatles' catalog. But for how long? According to All Things Digital, the deal extends into 2011.
EMI Music spokesman Dylan Jones told All Things D that Apple's deal reaches into 2011 and beyond January 1st. He did confirm that the exclusivity will eventually end, but he didn't say when. For the time being, distributors like Amazon, Spotify, Rhapsody and the Zune will just have to wait.

Google Voice for iPhone is finally out on the App Store
Turns out, when Apple announced it was a day you'd never forget, maybe it wasn't talking about The Beatles. Last we heard, Google Voice was expected on the App Store "soon" and now here it is. Official Google Voice app for iPhone hits the App Store
A few weeks after third-party apps started filtering in, Google's launched its own Google Voice app for the iPhone, and it looks to have all the most important features: call and text support, push notifications, and voicemail access (including transcriptions). It's available right now -- US only at the moment -- on iPhones with iOS 3.1 or higher as long as you've got a valid Google Voice account set up so get to it.

Panasonic says it will start selling Android-based smartphones in Japan next year, overseas in 2012
Panasonic may not be new to cellphones, but it has sat out of the smartphone explosion of recent years -- an oversight that it's now apparently looking to correct. Speaking at a news conference today, the head of Panasonic's mobile division, Osamu Waki, said flatly that the compmany "misjudged the speed at which smartphones would be taken up in the Japanese market," and that "with the rapid shift to Android, we want to catch up quickly." Apple's deal for the Beatles on the iTunes Store is an exclusive "into 2011," EMI representative Dylan Jones said. Verizon hints at iPhone in cryptic tweet
Verizon's careers Twitter account posted an unusual response to a user yesterday that may have hinted at iPhone plans. When a user asked if Verizon's iPad availability and a mention of "more to come" was a hint of an iPhone plan, the staffer manning the Verizon account replied only "yes that is the latest scoop." Warpia Easy Dock Pro wirelessly bridges notebooks, desktops
Warpia has launched a new docking peripheral, the Easy Dock Pro. The unit differs from most notebook docks in relying on a wireless connection instead of direct plug-in; an adapter broadcasts from a notebook's USB port to a remote base station. Altec Lansing has finally released its newest speaker dock, the Octiv Stage, for iPads. The Octiv Stage differs from many docks in that it has a comparatively small footprint and can support the tablet in either portrait or landscape orientation.

According to Tim Wu, author of The Master Switch: The Rise and Fall of Information Empires and the man responsible for the term "net neutrality," Apple is the number one danger to Internet freedom. Infineon erzielt ersten Jahresgewinn seit 2004

RIM posts PlayBook vs. iPad video, shows Flash slowdowns
RIM today posted a video (below) pitting the BlackBerry PlayBook against the iPad in a browsing test. The newer tablet's dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor appropriately gave it an edge in the comparison, as most pages, especially those heavily dependent on JavaScript and more complex code like the ACID3 test. A visit to Adidas' website also took advantage of RIM basing the BlackBerry Tablet OS on Adobe's Flash platform, as it can render Flash on the web properly where the iPad simply turns up an error.

Sam's Club puts iPad on sale at slight discount
Warehouse retailer Sam's Club, owned by Walmart, is finally beginning to put the iPad on sale as was promised in October, shoppers say. The Sam's Club units are being offered at a slight discount. Whereas Apple charges $499 for a 16GB Wi-Fi iPad, the same option costs $488 at Sam's. Wi-Fi tablets are $11 cheaper, in general, while 3G-ready ones have been discounted by $20.

Accused Apple manager could be forced to return $1M in kickbacks
Back in August we learned of the arrest of Paul Shin Devine on charges of taking over $1 million in kickbacks from Apple suppliers. Since that time, prosecutors have been following the money trail and have now asked U.S. District Judge James Ware in San Jose, California to order the forfeiture of US$1 million in cash and assets. The government has frozen $950,000 in cash from six different bank accounts belonging to Devine.
Devine was a global supply manager for Apple until his arrest and was accused of providing confidential information to suppliers before they negotiated contracts with the company. Prosecutors are still hanging on to Devine's computers as p

Barnes & Noble today said it had started shipping the Nook Color to early pre-orders. We've only ever seen brief glimpses of the BlackBerry PlayBook in action so far, but a new video posted up by RIM comparing its tablet's web browsing performance to the iPad certainly has us hungry for more. Seriously -- PlayBook pretty much run laps around the iPad while loading pages, and even its Flash performance seems decent, which is a first for a mobile device in our experience. Drobo updates Drobo S with USB 3.0, gives away goodies to TUAW readers
Data Robotics has added a new feature to the Drobo S, the five-drive BeyondRAID storage device that can be expanded up to 10 TB of space. While USB 3.0 (note the new port at far right on the image shown here) isn't currently supported out of the box by any Apple products, there are third-party USB 3.0 PCI Express and ExpressCard/34 adapters available to bring the faster version of USB to the Mac Pro and older MacBook Pros. Nook Color now shipping to early birds, limited retail
The $249 Nook Color has decided its November 19th shipping date wasn't soon enough so it's jumped ahead of it with pre-order deliveries starting today. Barnes and Noble's Nook with a hook will be cheering those who reserved or pre-ordered it as shipping ramps up through this week, and there'll even be some "very limited" quantities that you'll be able to buy at retail locations like B&N, Best Buy, Walmart, and Books-A-Million stores. Nook Color review
It's hard to believe we're already writing a review of the Nook Color, considering Barnes & Noble's first foray into the e-reader world was revealed just over a year ago. In that time, the company has gone from no presence in e-books to owning 20 percent of the marketshare, and now has moved from a somewhat sluggish hybrid E-Ink / LCD device to a full color, tablet-like product. The Nook Color is definitely a major step forward, boasting a completely revamped, Android-based OS, and a big push into the children's book and periodical market (particularly full color magazines). Olympus this morning shot back at Panasonic's GF2 with its own second generation compact, swappable lens camera. Time Geeks is a charmer. It's basically an image finder -- you're presented with a picture full of various things and goings-on and tasked with seeking out a certain item or image in that picture. There are a few of these on the App Store, and some of them are pretty lousy, but Time Geeks is anything but. You're still just pointing and clicking, but the images in Time Geeks are just incredible. They're gorgeous pixelated art, packed with not only great looking colors and shapes, but also nerd and geek references aplenty. Opera kehrt im dritten Quartal in die Gewinnzone zurück
Nach einem Verlust im dritten Quartal 2009 hat Opera ein Jahr später wieder schwarze Zahlen geschrieben. Laut der gestern veröffentlichten Quartalsbilanz (PDF) beläuft sich der Überschuss auf 20,2 Millionen Norwegische Kronen (2,5 Millionen Euro). Nachdem Apple das Update auf Mac OS X 10.6.5 Server zurückgezogen hatte, steht die Aktualisierung jetzt wieder zur Verfügung. Die Versionsbezeichnung lautet "10.6.5 v 1.1". It's a Minecraft client for iOS, a version of the extremely popular indie game that can be run on an iPhone, and connect up to real Minecraft servers. ViewSonic has introduced several new products, including a pocket camcorder/projector, a 3D camcorder, and a 3D picture frame. Intel confirms Sandy Bridge launching at CES
Intel tonight sent out an invitation confirming that it would launch its Sandy Bridge processors at its CES keynote on January 5. PC Client Group general manager Mooly Eden will show the chips, now badged "second generation Intel Core processors." One of these will be the "world's fastest processor," the invite said.

Confirmed: Intel Sandy Bridge or 'second generation Core processors' to be introduced at CES

Rage: Mutant Bash TV brings id Tech 5 to iOS
We saw id games' newest title, Rage, demonstrated earlier this year on an iOS device, but now there's more details and specifics on just how it's coming to iOS. It's not a straight port of the PC and console shooter -- rather, id is calling it Rage: Mutant Bash TV, and releasing this version of the game as an original, on-rails shooter. IGN has some video of the game running, and it looks pretty great. While the on-rails part means that you don't control movement at all, the camera controls and shooting gameplay look like a lot of fun.

Google CEO: Chrome OS geared for keyboard input, not touch
Google CEO Eric Schmidt took time at the Web 2.0 summit to clarify his company's strategy for Chrome OS devices. Source London: network of 1,300 charging stations coming by end of 2013
London Mayor Boris Johnson has announced a plan to create a city-wide electric vehicle network dubbed Source London. It calls for 1,300 public-use charging stations to be installed by the end of 2013 - assuming the Mayan's weren't right about 2012. Any driver who registered for the network and paid an estimated annual membership fee of £100 (roughly $160 at the current exchange rate) could juice their EVs across all of the stations. Forbes calls Scott Forstall a 'name you need to know'
Do you know who Scott Forstall is?
According to Forbes Magazine, you should. As part of a crowd-sourcing project for the January issue of the magazine, Forbes asked readers to suggest the names of people who will be important in 2011. One of the picks was Forstall, Apple's senior vice president of iPhone software.
Forstall was one of the NeXT engineers who followed Steve Jobs back to Apple, and in his current role he's the man behind the wild success of iOS. It's estimated that iOS currently runs on over 100 million devices worldwide.

Flight Control HD coming to Mac via Steam, Mac App Store
Game maker Firemint aren't waiting for the Mac App Store to launch to get their popular airplane-landing management game Flight Control HD onto the Mac -- they're releasing a version via the Steam game engine later this month, the company says. Versions of the popular game are already available for iOS devices and other game platforms.

RIM pulls Kik Messenger from App World, cites 'number of issues and customer concerns'

Google chief denies evidence of Android fragmentation
Google chief Eric Schmidt as part of the same talk that showed the Nexus S again denied that fragmentation was a problem for Android. He tried to persuade the Web 2.0 Summit audience that Google was using a "carrot and stick" approach to keep phone makers in line and that the contracts with the Open Handset Alliance were preventing a splintering of the market. Mac OS X Server 10.6.5 update returns, with minor fix
The 10.6.5 update for Mac OS X Server, removed earlier today, has been restored with a fix for an e-mail delivery bug found in the original version. The new build, 10H575, fixes a memory aliasing issue introduced in the earlier version in Dovecot's handling of user names, resulting is mail potentially being delivered to the wrong user on machines using Dovecot as a mail server. The issue only affects machines running the earlier-posted version of 10.6.5 Server, and also does not affect the original Dovecot open-source project.

10.6.5 server update back online, with a small security tweak
The Mac OS X Server 10.6.5 update is back online, now marked v1.1 and with an incremented build number. It's available through Software Update and for download after fixing a memory aliasing issue in Dovecot's handling of user names.
We reported earlier that the 10.6.5 Server update was pulled briefly, coincident with reports of a number of issues. These included problems with Whole Disk Encryption, DNS resolution issues, LDAP/Open Directory master hiccups and remote connection drops.

Google CEO: Nexus S due in weeks, Android 2.3 to get NFC
Google CEO Eric Schmidt at the Web 2.0 Summit today showed a working example of the Nexus S. He refused to name Samsung as the manufacturer but mentioned it would run Android 2.3, or Gingerbread; it was also seen running on T-Mobile. Why 10.6.5 and Symantec's PGP Whole Disk Encryption didn't get along
For those of you who joined us for last night's TUAW Talkcast know that one of the Mac OS X 10.6.5 issues that we discussed dealt with PGP WDE (Whole Disk Encryption), a Symantec product that is used to encrypt an entire hard drive. PGP WDE is very useful to those who carry sensitive information on their MacBooks, as they can be assured that nobody can access the info or even boot the machine without knowing the encryption password.

Leak: Beatles coming to iTunes tomorrow
The Beatles will be the center of Apple's iTunes news on Tuesday, a major leak may have confirmed today. Talks running as late as last week between Apple, the Beatles and EMI should have Apple announcing that the band's catalog will "soon" be on Apple's store. The WSJ sources didn't discover the conditions and whether it would be an iTunes exclusive for now, though neither Amazon nor other major stores have mentioned the news.

Wall Street Journal confirms Beatles on iTunes
Ethan Smith of the Wall Street Journal writes that iTunes will soon be carrying the Beatles catalog, according to "people familiar with the situation." According to Smith, this deal was finalized recently -- as late as last week -- between Apple and EMI group.
If so, this plays into the Beatles-style hints of today's teaser announcement on the Apple home page and supports the notion that iTunes will begin selling the Beatles music as early as tomorrow.

Australia election campaign promises iPads in every hospital
In what I can comfortably say is a previously unimagined application, the iPad is now being used as an election promise to entice voters in Australia.
