Windowshop from Amazon feels like a catalog on your iPad
Just in time for the holiday gift buying frenzy, online retail behemoth Amazon has taken the wraps off of a new way to help separate your money from your wallet. A free new iPad app, Windowshop, optimizes the Amazon shopping experience for the device.
I had a chance to download and use the new app this morning, and I like the fact that it has been written from the ground up for the iPad. It only allows browsing in landscape orientation, which is fine with me, but might irritate some who prefer the more book-like portrait mode.
Upon loading the app on your iPad, you'll immediately see columns of products arrayed on a side-scrolling screen. You can log into the app with your Amazon

Report: Steve Jobs was 'furious' over Microsoft's acquisition of Bungie
Apple hasn't shown a lot of initiative on the gaming side of things (this past "Back to the Mac" event was the first time the company even mentioned Steam coming to the Mac, something even Valve has admitted is a huge deal), but apparently Steve Jobs still has somewhat of a competitive streak.
Former Microsoft exec Ed Fries (who I just talked with last weekend at BlizzCon, strangely enough) has told Develop the story of developer Bungie being bought by Microsoft, which was the event that turned Bungie from a high profile Mac developer into a studio that made Halo games specifically for Microsoft's then-new Xbox console. Barnes & Noble Nook Color revealed
Barnes & Noble just unveiled its all-new Nook Color, an Android tablet fronted by a 7-inch color touchscreen so long, e-ink! There's built-in WiFi, but no 3G at this point. Thankfully, the price stays aggressive as a result: $249. It ships November 19th.

Workers allegedly poisoned while making iPhones
Several Chinese laborers are reporting serious illness after being exposed to a toxic chemical while assembling iPhones. According to reports, the workers inhaled vapors of a chemical called n-hexane while working in a poorly-ventilated room.
An ABC News foreign correspondent gained access to the Number Five People's Hospital in Suzhou, where the workers are being treated, to speak with them. They said that n-hexane was being used to glue and polish Apple logos on Apple iPhones that "they assumed were not fakes." The workers, some of whom have been hospitalized for half a year, state that they became dizzy and eventually were unable to walk. Most report continued pain in their legs.

Nokia's Savander: 'the Symbian Foundation will exist as an open source movement and we will use it'
The veracity of The Register's information regarding the Symbian Foundation's future remains to be seen -- but for what it's worth, Nokia's outspoken vice president of markets, Niklas Savander, seems to have some pretty strong language about the platform's future in a recent interview with CNET Asia. Garmin may have an iPhone app store offering
It's been couple of rocky years for Garmin. They offered a GPS phone to compete with the iPhone, but it didn't sell well. It was a good navigator, but not a very compelling phone. Then Garmin tied up with ASUS to bring an Android and Windows Mobile version of the phone to market. That pretty much cratered too, and now it looks like the Garmin and ASUS partnership will dissolve in January.
Now there are reports that Garmin will pursue the app business, and that may include an iPhone version.

Macworld posts MacBook Air benchmark results
When the new MacBook Airs were introduced, many were shocked to see a 1.4GHz Core 2 Duo processor in the standard 11-inch model and a 1.86GHz Core 2 Duo processor in the standard 13-inch model. Isn't that a step backward? The previous generation had either a 1.83GHz or a 2.13GHz Core 2 Duo processor standard.
The folks at Macworld ran some formal benchmark tests on both the 11.6-inch and the 13-inch Airs, comparing them to their predecessors and even a 13-inch MacBook Pro. The results may surprise you. iPhone-shaped soap smells like sausage
Sure, an iPhone-shaped soap bar is fun as it is, but surely there's something else that can be added to make it even more enjoyable, no? Etsy user twoeggplants decided to answer that question with a resounding yes, and is selling an iPhone-shaped bar of soap that just happens to smell like grilled meats while you use it. I kind of wish my actual iPhone smelled like grilled sausage -- I wouldn't want the grease on it, but the scent would be fine to have around.

JooJoo tablet to make another run at iPad with Android power
Despite landing with a distinct thud earlier this year, the JooJoo tablet from Fusion Garage is set to make a second run at the iPad in 2011. Instead of the underdeveloped Flash-based software that "powered" the first JooJoo, Fusion Garage has decided to go the Android route for its sequel.
In addition to the software change, the JooJoo2 is expected to transition to an all-new hardware platform as well. The original JooJoo was based on the same Intel Atom processors that power most netbooks. Android can run on this architecture, but it's really optimized for the ARM architecture that powers most cell phones and, of course, the iPad. The JooJoo2 will probably shrink from its current 12-inch size to something in the 7 to 10-inch range.

Keio University developing 'olfactory printer,' AromaRama due for a resurgence
We're not entirely sure why people keep trying to bring back Smell-O-Vision, although Keio University's success in printing scents using a modified printer gives us hope that this sort of thing might someday be somewhat feasible -- and useful. It works by using an off-the-shelf Canon printer that's been given a "scent jet," Kenichi Okada told New Scientist. "We are using the ink-jet printer's ability to eject tiny pulses of material to achieve precise control." The scent dissipates quickly, after one or two human breaths. Bloom County's Banana Jr 6000 lives on as a fantastic case mod
If you're too young to remember it, the Banana Jr 6000 was a thing of beauty that appeared in the comic strip Bloom County, which used to run in these things we called newspapers. (You can find out more about newspapers on Wikipedia and by asking your older relatives.) To this day, Bloom County still cracks me up, and I can quote you more of those strips word for word than is probably healthy.

Office 2011 für Mac ab heute erhältlich
Microsoft Office 2011 ist seit heute für Mac OS X erhältlich. Das neue Office-Paket umfasst die Programme Word, Excel, PowerPoint und Outlook, wobei letzteres das wenig beliebte Entourage ersetzt. Erstmals seit langem können sich Mac-Anwender auf eine Office-Version freuen, die featuremässig weitestgehend identisch mit der aktuellen Fassung von Office für Windows ist. Dies bedeutet, dass die Ribbon-Oberfläche nun auch auf dem Mac Einzug hält. Ausserdem unterstützt Office 2011 im Gegensatz zu seinem Vorgänger auch wieder VBA-Makros. Die Gemeinsamkeiten zwischen der Mac- und der Windows-Version gehen aber noch einen Schritt weiter. Beide Software-Pakete werden in denselben Ausführungen zu denselben Preisen vertrieben. White iPhone shows up in Apple Store app
As reported earlier today, Apple has updated the App Store app, and with that update seems to come indication that the much coveted white iPhone 4 may be making its way to stores soon.
If you open the App Store app and navigate to the "Stores" area, then attempt to make a product reservation for an iPhone, you may note that there are black AND white versions listed. Unfortunately, if one attempts to reserve one of the white versions of the iPhone, you'll get the notice pictured. Attempting to reserve a black iPhone appears to work, though.

Das fast schon mystische iPhone 4 in weiß kommt wohl langsam aber sicher ans Tageslicht: Nachdem die App für den Apple Store (nur auf den ersten Blick verwirrend, diese Konstellation) ein Update verpasst bekam, tauchte jedenfalls die Farboption sozusagen offiziell auf. Was wohl bedeutet, dass der vermeintliche Produktions-Bug (Homebutton und Gehäuse unterschieden sich in Nuancen) im Griff ist und die Geräte in der unschuldigen Farbe schon so gut wie im Container. Just as the rumors suggested, Apple updated the official Apple Store app to include support for customer check-ins, reservations and other location-based services.
You can use the app to reserve products to pickup at Apple retail stores, check into stores upon arrival to alert employees to your appointment and add reservation appointments to iCal (note that iOS 4 is required for check-in and iCal support). You'll also be able to add engraving and gift wrapping options when making purchases from the store.

White iPhone 4 evidence shows up in Apple Store app's update?
So, you may or may not have noticed that this morning, Apple updated its own Apple Store app for the very first time, and version 1.1 has a little surprise. That's right, in the 'Reserve Products' screen, the much delayed white iPhone 4 shows up as an option. Now, before you lose control of yourself, keep in mind that you can't actually reserve one yet. Of course, this could just be some sort of cruel glitch in the system, or it could be a tiny bit of evidence that the white iPhone is actually, finally on its way. At the very least, we know that Apple's still thinking of it just like us.

Analyst: Flash memory makes MacBook Air more profitable than bigger laptops
We already know the MacBook Air is thinner than most laptops, but it turns out that the stack of money it makes Apple isn't. An analyst named Brian Marshall of Gleacher & Co. says that the flash memory in the MacBook Air is one of the big places that Apple makes its money on the machine, reportedly costing Apple just $80. According to Marshall, this means the profit margin on the Air is between 28 and 37 percent; that's almost 10 percent higher than Apple's traditional MacBook lines.

Ein Bezirksgericht im amerikanischen Bundesstaat Washington hat jetzt festgestellt, dass Onlinehändler Amazon nicht verpflichtet ist, die Daten von 50 Millionen Online-Einkäufen an die Steuerbehörden von North Carolina weiterzugeben. Die Steuerbeamten hatten detaillierte Informationen wie die Namen und Adressen der in North Carolina ansässigen Kunden sowie eine Liste ihrer Einkäufe zwischen 2003 und 2010 verlangt. Zwei Jahre nach dem Start des OS und ein halbes Jahr nach der 50.000-Marke hat der Android Market jetzt mehr als 100.000 Apps im Angebot, wie Google gerade recht still und stilvoll verkündet hat. Damit liegt Apples App Store immer noch vorne und zwar sowohl was absolute Zahlen (irgendwo bei 280.000) als auch was die Wachstumsrate angeht, aber in der Praxis spielen diese Statistiken wohl kaum noch eine Rolle - für beide Systeme gibt es fast nichts mehr, was nicht gibt.

Anrufen auf gesperrtem iPhone: Notruf-Bug, anstehender Fix mit iOS 4.1.1?
Dass ein gesperrtes iPhone nur für Notrufe genutzt werden kann stimmt fast, aber nicht ganz: nach Eingabe beliebiger Nummern statt der Notruf-Nummer und anschließendem schnellen Drücken von Wahltaste und Power-Button kommt man in die Telefon-App, die dann mitsamt Kontakten, Nummernblock etc. ohne Einschränkungen genutzt werden kann.

Android Market surpasses 100,000 apps: can't stop, won't stop growing
Ah, there we go. Right around three months after we falsely suspected that El Goog had crossed the 100,000 mark in its Android Market, the company itself has today confirmed the passing of that line via Twitter. For those keeping count, it took but three months to go from 70,000 to 100,000 and seven months to go from 30,000 to this point. If you've got a passcode entry set on your iPhone, you might think it could block nefarious or mischievous people from accessing any part of your iPhone. Not so. We've been made aware of a security flaw in iOS 4.1 that allows users to bypass the passcode entry screen and gain direct access to the iPhone's Phone app. It's not just hype either: this is easier to pull off than the Konami code.

Your iPhone's passcode entry can't block everything, it seems -- at least not with iOS 4.1. We're hearing various reports that simply inputting a random number in the emergency call field and then promptly hitting the hardware lock button will take you to the Phone app, thereby granting you access to the call history, voicemail, and address book. We've tried this with iPhone 3G, 3GS, and 4, all with the same result. We can't get out of the field without trying to place a call, and after that we're still stuck back at the passcode screen. We knew that Hulu Plus was making a beeline for Roku's stable of media streaming boxes, but now owners have yet another avenue to grab online content: PlayOn. For those unaware, PlayOn delivers online material from Hulu, PBS, TBS, ESPN, CNN, MLB.tv and YouTube (among other places), but the catch is that there's an annual fee for having access ($34.99 for the first year; $19.99 each year thereafter). Like a few commercial television networks before it, PBS has launched an iPad app designed to stream the network's content to your iPad on demand. PBS for iPad is available for free right now on the App Store, and has full streams of lots of classic shows. Windows Phone Connector for Mac's beta pulls in unprotected music, photos and podcasts from both iTunes and iPhoto. It also uses Microsoft's newer Autoupdate feature to check for and load firmware upgrades over USB instead of having to go over-the-air.

Departing exec warns Microsoft of "post-PC world"
Microsoft's departing executive Ray Ozzie has posted an essay sending warning signs to Microsoft that its core Office and Windows businesses would eventually come to an end. He asked coworkers to get ready for a "'post-PC' world" but cautioned that the platform was getting too complex both for users and developers and would likely lead to a backlash towards simpler, "appliance-like" devices. He also acknowledged that Microsoft had wasted its opportunities in mobile and had let Apple, Facebook, Google and others get a clear lead.

What will the iPhone 5 be made of?
The iPhone 4 has had its share of design-related issues. First, the external stainless steel wraparound antenna caused reception hiccups that resulted in the famous "antennagate" Apple event.

Verizon's Galaxy Tab won't have Skype, NFL Mobile, or V Cast video apps at launch
Looks like that plan to bring NFL content Verizon tablets is on hold, at least for now -- we just got Big Red's employee training materials for the Samsung Galaxy Tab, and they explicitly say that Skype Mobile, NFL Mobile, and V Cast Video won't be available on the seven-inch tablet at launch. That's disappointing for a variety of reasons -- particularly the loss of Skype, which would have made up for the lack of voice calling ability -- but we're hoping the holdup is mostly due to app-compatibility issues and not corporate politics. Red Pill image editor goes final; features content fill
Just three weeks after their fifth public beta, German software house Times For Fun have updated their photo image editor Red Pill to 1.0. The program features over a dozen Photoshop-like tools, including the clone stamp, magic wand and a "Smart Fill" similar to the "content-aware" fill offering in Photoshop CS5.
