Wi-Gear NOT acquired by Apple
The reports yesterday from 9to5 Mac that Apple had acquired wireless headphone maker Wi-Gear have turned out to be false. Barron's did some checking and emailed Wi-Gear CEO Mark Pundsack who replied:
"The rumor is false. Wi-Gear and its IP are still available for sale."

Fortunately for those of us who are easily amused, Apple's operating system updates seem to be scheduled just far apart enough to make each release seem like Christmas Day. We anxiously await for the release to show up like kids waiting to open a special present, we tear open the box (in this analogy, we load the new OS), and then we're torn between excitement for our new toy and disappointment that it's usually not everything we has wished for.

Study finds that text message-addicted teens more likely to have a life
According to a recent study lead by Dr. Scott Frank, an associate professor of epidemiology and biostatistics at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, kids in Cleveland who text over 120 times a day are more likely than to have had sex or to have used drugs or alcohol than kids who don't send as many massages. We're guessing it's because it takes in excess of 120 text messages for kids to line up their drugs, alcohol, or sex partners. To explain the findings, Frank puts it this way: "If parents are monitoring their kids' texting and social networking, they're probably monitoring other activities as well." iTunes Connect will be open over Thanksgiving weekend
A few weeks ago it was reported that iTunes Connect would be closed over Thanksgiving weekend and the Christmas holiday. While the closure wouldn't affect consumers who want to shop for apps, it would affect developers who wanted to submit new apps or change prices of their apps during that period.
iTunes Connect had been closed for a number of days over Christmases past, but the Thanksgiving closure was one that irked a lot of devs as it came during Black Friday and Cyber Monday -- the four day weekend that is the traditional start off to the US holiday shopping season.
To the relief of developers everywhere, Apple last night notified iOS devs that iTunes Connect will be closing for Christmas between December 23-28, but made no me

Mac OS X 10.6.5 update available now
And look at what we have here! That's right, the rumored Mac OS X 10.6.5 update is dropping as we speak. What this will mean for the impending iOS release (and the whole AirPrint thing) remains to be seen, but in the meantime you can get started now if you want to ooh and ahh at the various implemented fixes, including improved Microsoft Exchange server reliability, improved MainStage performance ("on certain Macs"), and various security improvements. 10.6.5 now available on Software Update
And just as foretold, here it is -- the 10.6.5 update to OS X is now available in a Software Update window near you. As you can see above, the new version provides a little more security, stability, and reliability in a few areas, helps out iPhoto and Aperture image processing, and should fix some outstanding issues with various apps and accessories.

Jabra brings out Stone2 headset with voice control
Jabra today updated its signature Bluetooth headset. The Stone2 keeps its signature twist shape and namesake charger but adds voice control and guidance. On a basic level, the earpiece will read out caller ID or the phone number and either take or end the call by speaking "answer" or "ignore." Many devices can also start a call through speaking the name or number, and Jabra's app platform opens the option of voice-guided e-mail, searches, social networking and text messages.

iPhone and Android shares rise while BlackBerry, Symbian fall
It's definitely a good time to be an iPhone or an Android smartphone. Gartner is reporting that while the iPhone's total smartphone market share fell slightly from 17.1 percent to 16.7 percent (while still selling more total units than RIM) and Android's jumped from 3.5 percent to 25.5 percent in the past year, BlackBerry has seen a decline from 20.7 percent to 14.8 percent and Symbian from 44.6 percent to 36.6 percent. Windows Mobile's share has been sliced by more than half, from 7.9 percent down to just 2.8 percent of the market. In terms of total worldwide mobile sales, Apple's share is up to 3.2 percent from 2.3 percent this time last year, with 13,484,400 units sold in Q3 2010. Analysts project

ARM intros next-gen Mali-T604 embedded GPU, Samsung first to get it
Promising "visually rich user experiences not previously seen in consumer electronics devices," ARM has introduced its latest embedded GPU architecture, Mali-T604, at its Technology Conference 2010 in California today. Though we're unlikely to see it in devices any time soon, the introduction means that the new design is available to ARM licensees -- and notably, the company points out that partner Samsung will be the first to get hooked up. Considering Sammy competes in the high-end embedded system-on-chip space already with its ARM-based Hummingbird line of cores, adding in the Mali-T604 is probably the next logical step for them. Consumer Reports loves MacBook Air
Consumer Reports (CR) is in love with all models of the MacBook Air. In the publication's most recent ranking of notebooks and netbooks, the MacBook Air received top rankings and the coveted "recommended" status.
The 11.6-inch MacBook Air topped the list of 11-inch laptops (don't get excited, there were only two entrants) with a score of 67 out of 100. Its performance was rated as "good," while ergonomics and the display were rated "very good."
Meanwhile, the two 13-inch Air models ranked up 73 and 72 points, with the 2.4GHz model earning the "recommended" rating. As for Apple's other laptops, the 2.53GHz Core i5 15-inch MacBook Pro sat atop CR's 15- to 16-inch model chart, while the 17-inch MacBook Pro ruled the list of

iPad comes to Russian retailers
The iPad is now on sale in Russia, reports and Apple's website confirm. Sales are said to have begun at approximately 7PM local time through three chains: M.Video, Bely Veter and re:Store. Distribution is described as limited. M.Video, for instance, is only selling the tablet in four cities, including Moscow.

iPad vying with notebooks, peace on holiday wish lists
The Consumer Electronics Association today put out a list that had the iPad competing with peace and happiness for the top spot in technology. Apple's tablet was in the top three in a survey of holiday wishes of any kind, coming just behind notebooks and "peace/happiness." It ranked higher than many common non-tech and even non-material wishes, such as clothes, cars and good health.

Steve Jobs: AirPrint support for Mac and PCs not canceled
We reported earlier on a rumor suggesting that new iOS 4.2 AirPrint feature that allowed users to print wirelessly to any printer connected to a PC or Mac had been canceled. Because of the rumor, a frustrated MacRumors reader emailed Steve Jobs and suggested that Apple could begin to lose credibility and become known for announcing "vaporware." Steve Jobs replied with an email that simply read:
AirPrint has not been pulled. Don't believe everything you read.
So there you go, folks. If the email's legit (and Steve isn't mixing up the story at all), we will still see AirPrint arrive in iOS 4.2, which is set to drop any day now. Don't forge

Bootlace lets you install Froyo on your iPhone without a computer
It may not solve some of the problems involved with actually running Android on an iPhone, but the recently released Bootlace 2.1 application for jailbroken iPhones does at least make the installation process easier than ever. Unfortunately, it only works with the iPhone 2G and 3G at the moment, but it will let you install Android 2.2 (a.k.a Froyo) directly on the device without the need for a computer. Jobs: AirPrint still a go for iOS 4.2
AirPrint will still be included in iOS 4.2, in spite of some claims to the contrary, Apple CEO Steve Jobs is reportedly saying. "AirPrint has not been pulled," Jobs is noted to have written in an e-mail exchange. "Don't believe everything you read." The message was sent in response to a complaint by an iPad owner, who suggested that Apple might be developing a reputation for vaporware, referring specifically to the missing white iPhone 4.

AMD previews Khrishna, Trinity, Wichita, Komodo processors
AMD as part of the same preview that showed the first shipping Fusion chips also provided the codenames for some of its longer term processor launches. Washington Post for iPad is a bit hard on the eyes
I've been using the Washington Post for iPad app since it was released earlier this week. It's nice to see the Post jump into the dedicated iPad app competition, but while there are some things to like about the app, there is also a lot I find extremely disappointing.
The good first. Most, but not all of the Post is here. The reporters, bloggers, and columnists are in full force. The app content updates frequently, and there is an excellent multimedia section with both images and video. The Post has embraced social media, and you can see what people on Twitter and Facebook are saying about the big stories. When you bring up a story, you can also see stories from other media, like NPR and the Christian Science Monitor. That's a good idea, and lets you see a ra

Dentsu Group and Apple bring iAd to Japan
Apple has inked a deal with the Dentsu Group that will bring iAd to Japan. Dentsu subsidiary cyber communications, inc. (cci) will take over the selling and "creative execution" of iAds in Japan, with a premiere date set for "early 2011." Under this arrangement, Apple will be limited to hosting and delivery. Verizon trots out FiOS Flex View phone, tablet TV viewing
Verizon today switched on Flex View as an on-demand option for FiOS TV viewers. Both the desktop and mobile versions of its Media Manager app can buy or rent the same video on demand options as they would have from the fiber optic service itself. Video is stored locally to work offline and supports bookmarks to pick up playback later.

iOS 4.2 page on Apple's website promotes "100+ new features"
Apple has published a new page that outlines the main features of iOS 4.2 for the iPad. The page goes on to tout some of the "100+ new features" that iOS 4.2 will offer iPad users, including multitasking, folders, AirPlay, Game Center and enterprise support and yes, AirPrint.
The page also lists "November" as the release date, though we've heard that it could drop as early as this Friday. The update recently hit gold master status which means that it's all but ready to go. This is the first we've seen a list of what to expect since Apple reached that milestone.

Motorola Citrus launching on Verizon tomorrow for $50 on-contract
Not much of a surprise at this point, but Verizon has now confirmed that it will be launching the Android-based Motorola Citrus tomorrow, November 11th, and that it will be offering it for just $50 on the usual two-year contract (after a $100 mail-in rebate). Registrations open for 2011 FileMaker Developer Conference
Apple-owned FileMaker has opened up registrations for the 2011 FileMaker Developer Conference. NHL GameCenter streaming comes to PS3 for $9.99, free for Plus members

Live NHL games reach Boxee, PS3 and Roku
The NHL launched a three-prong effort to get live games on to digital media hubs by offering its GameCenter Live broadcasts on multiple new platforms. Boxee's Mac and Windows apps, the Boxee Box, the PS3 and Roku players now have access to live, streaming hockey games, on-demand versions for 48 hours later and the roughly 500 full games and other condensed games in the league's archive. Apple suppliers based in Taiwan may be forced to raise their prices, says Bloomberg. The Taiwanese dollar has grown 2.5 percent against the US dollar during the last month, and by 7.2 percent during the last year. Gartner's global phone sales rankings match IDC's, but say the big guys have less of the pie
At a 30,000-foot level, the global mobile phone sales numbers for the third quarter of 2010 just released by Gartner match up with what IDC posted a few days ago, but you might say the devil's in the details. MS reiterates plans for Apple-style control of WP7 updates

Terminal Tips: More reliable SSH connections to your Back to My Mac hosts
Back to My Mac is a feature of MobileMe that allows you to connect remotely to your Macs. Usually this is for screen-sharing or file-sharing through the Finder, but you can also connect via SSH.
In the Terminal app (found in /Applications/Utilities/), you can connect via Shell » New Remote Connection, then click the "Secure Shell (SSH)" item, then the computer you want to connect to under the "Server" column.
But what if that doesn't work? In that case, I have two suggestions for you: first, use SSH v2 and IPv6. Perhaps it's best to show you the command and then explain it:

Manchmal mag viel wirklich viel helfen, aber in diesem Fall wird es immer verheerender - und das von einer ohnehin abgründigen Ausgangsbasis. iOS 4.2 coming Friday with iTunes and Mac OS X updates, sans AirPrint?
We knew it was coming, and now we're hearing from MacStories (and their source at AT&T, who was probably wearing a trench coat and fedora) that iOS 4.2 for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad will roll out beginning this Friday, November 12, at 10AM PST. Of course, in order to take advantage AirPlay we'll have to see an update to iTunes as well, which is good because iTunes 10.1 is rumored to be coming tomorrow at some point. But that ain't all! Gartner: iOS bei 16,7 Prozent Smartphone-Marktanteil, Android bei 25,5 Prozent
Aktuellen Zahlen von Gartner zufolge liegt der weltweite Android-Marktanteil inzwischen deutlich über dem von iOS. Mit 20,5 Millionen Android-Geräten im dritten Quartal verfünfzehnfachten sich die Verkaufszahlen innerhalb eines Jahres beinahe. Android legte von 3,5 Prozent auf 25,5 Prozent Marktanteil zu. Sprint confirms ZTE Peel 3G hotspot for iPod touch

Dates set for Christmas iTunes Connect shutdown
Apple is reportedly informing developers that iTunes Connect will be temporarily shut down between December 23rd and the 28th. The downtime is expected, as Apple regularly takes the developer service offline during the holidays. App creators will be unable to submit new or updated apps during the gap; similarly, any apps set to go live during the period will not reach the App Store until December 29th.

Rumor: AirPrint support for Mac and PCs canceled
Some things, as the saying goes, are not meant to last. Apparently, that is the case with the new AirPrint feature in the upcoming iOS 4.2 for the iPad that was set to allow users to print wirelessly to any printer connected to their Mac or PC.
I say "was" because it is becoming increasingly apparent that Apple has pulled some of the AirPrint functionality off the table, at least for now. Well, well, what's this? We were just sent this obvious mockup of an ESPN Xbox 360, which our tipster found just hanging out on a Microsoft PR server. Now, this could just be a branding exercise or the remnants of a failed idea, but now that ESPN 3 is live on the Xbox 360 Fall 2010 Dashboard Update, it makes sense for the two companies to explore a branded console -- we know a lot of college students (and Engadget editors) who'd love to ditch their cable and still get ESPN through their 360s. Sony VAIO Y shrinks to 11.6 inches to combat MacBook Air
Sony on Wednesday launched a new VAIO Y model that has unintentionally but effectively become its answer to the new MacBook Air. The YA1 occupies the same category as its Apple counterpart and uses an ultra-low voltage 1.33GHz Core i3 to keep both the cost down and extend the battery life, albeit at the cost of performance. Apple has signed a pact with a Japanese marketer, The Dentsu Group, to bring the iAd platform to Japan in early 2011. Symbian and BlackBerry share crashes, Android and iPhone up
Symbian has lost more than a sixth of its smartphone market share in just the past year, Gartner found today. The platform, used almost exclusively by Nokia, fell from 44.6 percent last summer to 36.6 percent a year later. RIM's BlackBerry platform, despite its record high sales, also plunged sharply as it fell from 20.7 percent a year ago to 14.8 percent this summer.

Macworld 2011 to be 30-35 percent larger, host Featured Artists sessions
We're still pre-Thanksgiving, so we have a whole three months of holidays to get through, but it's never too early to start thinking about the next iteration of Macworld. If you're stuck in an area that's not served by an existing broadband source, your options for hopping on the world wide web at a rate hastier than 56Kbps are limited. Severely limited. The go-to alternative for the past few years has been HughesNet, a satellite-based "broadband" service that offers users 2Mbps down / 300Kbps up for a staggering $120 per month. Steve Jobs: Neue Final-Cut-Version kommt Anfang 2011
Gerüchten zufolge wird Apple Anfang des nächsten Jahres eine neue Version der Videobearbeitungssoftware Final Cut Studio einführen. Dies geht aus einer wie immer kurz gehaltenen E-Mail von Steve Jobs hervor, mit der er bereits vor einigen Wochen auf die Frage eines Bloggers nach der Zukunft von Apples Pro Apps reagierte. «A great release of Final Cut is coming early next year», soll der Apple-CEO versprochen haben. In den letzten Monaten waren immer wieder Befürchtungen laut geworden, wonach Apple angesichts seiner Erfolge im Consumer-Electronics-Bereich das Interesse am Geschäft mit Pro Apps verloren haben könnte. Auch wenn Apple mehrmals öffentlich betonte, Final Cut Studio weiterhin mit voller Kraft zu entwickeln, hielten sich Gerüchte um Verzögerungen bei der nächsten Final-Cut-Version hartnäckig. Die aktuelle Version von Final Cut Studio stammt aus dem Sommer 2009, ein Update zu Beginn des Jahres 2011 würde zeitlich gut zu Apples bisherigen Releasezyklen passen. (via macnotes.de)

You control a little bug-like ship (kind of gross, actually, if you've ever been plagued by the real thing) that you can move around the screen by swiping up, down, left, or right. You're chased by enemies just like more traditional shooters, such as Geometry Wars, but instead of shooting them yourself, you need to hunt down little proton pellets. BlackBerry PlayBook: der Preis soll "unter" 500 Dollar liegen

RIM Co-CEO Jim Balsillie hat der hungrigen Meute heute morgen einen netten Infohappen zum BlackBerry Playbook hingeworfen: den Preis, genauer gesagt seine Obergrenze. In einem koreanischen Interview hat Balsillie laut Bloomberg verraten, dass RIMs 7-Zoll-Tablet mit einem "sehr wettbewerbsfähigen Preis" von "weniger als" 500 Dollar gegen die Konkurrenz antreten soll. Rauskommen soll das Playbook im ersten Quartal 2011, allerdings werden wir es dann nur in Nordamerika sehen, der weltweite Verkauf ist für das zweite Quartal geplant.

Freenet steigert Ergebnis trotz Kundenschwund und Umsatzrückgang
Freenet hat seine Bilanz (PDF) für das dritte Quartal 2010 veröffentlicht. Demnach musste der Büdelsdorfer Telekommunikationskonzern, der seit April 2009 unter dem Namen Mobilcom Debitel firmiert, gegenüber dem Vorjahr einen Umsatzrückgang von 929,8 auf 846,9 Millionen Euro hinnehmen. Der Rohertrag sank von 191,7 auf 177,1 Millionen Euro.

Dass man das iPhone nicht mit Bordmitteln als transportablen Datemnspeicher wie einen USB-Stick nutzen kann, ist einer der häufigeren Vorwürfe ans Apple-gadget. Suchmaschine Ask.com wird nicht weiterentwickelt
Die Suchmaschine Ask.com wird nicht mehr verbessert, sondern durch einen Konkurrenzalgorithmus ersetzt. Das hat der Betreiber IAC beschlossen. Apples Umgang mit Wasserschäden am iPod
Um feststellen zu können ob ein Gerät durch Wasser beschädigt wurde, setzt Apple ein bestimmtes Verfahren zur Feststellung ein. Unter anderem beim iPod hat Apple dafür gesorgt, dass Service-Mitarbeiter direkt sehen können, wenn die Geräte in Kontakt mit Wasser kamen. Keine AirPrint-Unterstützung in Mac OS X 10.6.5?
Die Druckfunktion AirPrint ist eines der neuen Features in iOS 4.2 und wurde im September von Apple mit einer Medienmitteilung angekündigt. AirPrint soll es ermöglichen, drahtlos von einem iPhone, iPad oder iPad touch zu drucken. MacStories will nun aus Entwicklerkreisen erfahren haben, dass Apple die AirPrint-Unterstützung in Mac OS X 10.6.5 (und Windows) gestrichen hat. Diese Aussage wird auch dadurch gestützt, dass Apple sämtliche Verweise auf AirPrint aus der Dokumentation von Mac OS X 10.6.5 entfernt hat. Damit würde AirPrint für viele Anwender nutzlos werden. Ursprünglich war geplant, dass AirPrint über jeden in einem Netzwerk freigegebenen Drucker funktionieren würde. Ohne AirPrint-Unterstützung im Mac OS würde die Druckfunktion nur noch in Zusammenarbeit mit einigen direkt unterstützten HP-Druckermodellen funktionieren. RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie finally gave us a crucial bit of information about the BlackBerry Playbook this morning: price, or at least a threshold. According to a Korean interview, Balsillie said that RIM's 7-inch tablet will be "very competitively priced" with Bloomberg quoting the man saying that it will be "under" $500 when it hits North America in the first quarter of 2010. Leopard security bug fix on the way?
An important security bug in Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) that remains unpatched despite missed deadlines from Apple has forced Core Security Technologies to go public with the exploit, even though a fix may be imminent. NEC develops thin, flexible and 'practical' Organic Radical Battery
NEC first announced its super-thin Organic Radical Battery (or ORB) technology a full five years ago, but it's now finally back with what it describes as the first "practical" prototypes of the batteries. While these new batteries are about twice as thick as NEC's first such units, they're still only 0.7 mm thin, and are apparently much more reliable while also delivering 1.4 times more output (specifically, a capacity of 5mAh). A new survey from BoxTone Mobile Service Management of top executives and IT professionals at more than 800 enterprise-level businesses show that corporate adoption of the iPad is growing rapidly, with almost three-quarters expecting to incorporate the Apple device into their organizations over the next year and a quarter rolling them out immediately. Critical security warning issued for Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
Computerworld reports that security researchers from CoreLabs have publicly released details on a critical security flaw in Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, an older version of the Mac's operating system. Curiously, the security flaw in Leopard is quite similar to a flaw we reported on back in August, which allowed easy-as-pie browser-based jailbreaking of iOS devices.

Microsoft has released an update to Office for Mac 2011 today. The 14.0.1 update weighs in at 110 MB and includes critical fixes for issues that might cause Office 2011 applications to stop responding or quit unexpectedly. Other issues the update addresses include:

Funding brings at-home STD tests closer to reality
It's an idea that's been around the medical block a time or two already, but so far, no one has really stepped up to the plate in an effort to make at-home and on-the-go STD testing a mainstream reality. According to a new Guardian report, however, a grand total of seven entities (including the Medical Research Council) have moved to fund development in the space. The UK Clinical Research Collaboration is the end result, with £4 million at its disposal right from the get-go. E-books may be $1 billion business this year
E-books are nearly a $1 billion business and should triple in size, Forrester said in a new forecast. The business should reach $966 million in e-books sold in 2010 alone and should triple to $3 billion in 2015. Book reading should be "forever altered" by that point, even if color e-paper and advancements to the books themselves don't take place, analyst James McQuivey said.

Apple changes policy on liquid damage to iPods
According to a memo acquired by The Boy Genius Report (BGR), Apple has altered its policy on treating iPods with water damage. Under the new guidelines, service personnel will be required to do two things. First, confirm that the device's internal Liquid Contact Indicators (LCIs) had been activated. Second, the tech must positively identify secondary evidence of water damage. Previously, they were only required to confirm the LCI activation. BGR wonders if Apple has begun to mistrust the LCIs, and therefore ordered the search for secondary confirmation.
