They may not be the highest-function watches you've ever seen, but Phosphor's line of timepieces can make a claim that virtually no other watches in the world can: they've got E Ink displays. Microsoft revenue leaps 25%, overtaken by Apple
Microsoft this evening hit a record high $16.2 billion in revenue for its summer quarter. The figure was a 25 percent jump from a year ago and was helped by unfettered Windows 7 sales as well as Office 2010 and the Xbox 360. It wouldn't quote numbers but sold 38 percent more game consoles than it did last summer, owing largely to the slim Xbox; the console has been in the sales lead for four months.

Apple China online store sells out of iPhone 4s in 10 hours
Apple's mainland Chinese online store sold out of iPhone 4s in just 10 hours, a local report notes. The website opened on Tuesday, finally allowing people to order an iPhone 4 without standing in line at one of the country's four Apple retail outlets. Many of the initial orders however are believed to have gone to scalpers, who can resell an iPhone with a markup despite already high prices when compared to the US or Hong Kong.

Microsoft announces a record first-quarter revenue of $16.20 billion, $5.41 billion in profit
Microsoft just beat analyst expectations, announcing $16.20 billion in revenue for the first quarter of its 2011 fiscal year, with $5.41 billion in profit. Microsoft cites Office 2010, the sustained "PC refresh cycle," and 38 percent growth in the Xbox 360 biz for its good news, with overall revenue up 25 percent over the same quarter last year and a 51 percent gain in profit. Microsoft will have an earnings call at 5:30PM EDT, so we'll be keeping our ears peeled for Steve Ballmer to pull a Steve Jobs and rag hard on the competition -- if only we lived in a world of such beautiful symmetry.

AppleCare has paid for itself
My iMac is about three years old. I know this because my AppleCare is expiring on November 7th, and it extends the including one-year warranty by two years to give a total of three years of coverage. In short, I'm glad I've had it and wouldn't consider owning a Mac without it.
In the last three years, I have had a hard drive replaced (December 2008), a logic board replaced (March 2010), and am currently scheduled to have a second hard drive replacement (late October 2010).
I'm not particularly hard on my computers. They've all be plugged into UPS units (I've had good success with APC) and treated well and fairly. Perha

OCZ amps up performance on RevoDrive X2 PCIe SSD: 740MB/sec, up to 120k IOPS
Blink, and you've probably missed it. Just four short months after we saw OCZ Technology's original RevoDrive reviewed (and subsequently adored), along comes revision two. The RevoDrive X2 PCI-Express SSD looks, feels and smells the same as the first, but the performance is obviously looking north. Nook Color follows Apple's 'curated' app model, uses ARM A8
Barnes & Noble in a follow-up to the launch of the Nook Color has said it will have its own, separate app approval process. Similar to Apple's own approach, it will take submissions and get approvals within "weeks" of their arrival. It should have a typical revenue split, which Gizmodo interpreted as falling along the 70/30 division Apple and others use.

Verizon sends $25 million settlement to FCC, credits customers $52.8 million for wrongful data fees
Did we say Verizon would dole out $90 million in credits? It seems we spoke too soon, because the US Government is taking its cut of the carrier's apology after charging for data that customers didn't actually use. Verizon says it's settled with the FCC for $25 million and will cut a check to the US Treasury, and put the remaining $52.8 million towards the bills of 15 million affected customers in the form of $2 to $6 credits each. Verizon's not taking any blame in the matter, mind you, as it says the original data charges were "inadvertent" and caused by software pre-loaded on some phones. iOS 4.2 allows direct iPad connections to car audio
With the advent of iOS 4.2, iPad owners will finally be able to connect the device directly to a car audio system, reports say. Unlike iPhones and iPods, iPads can only currently pump audio into a first- or third-party car system using an aux-in stereo connection. The addition of USB support should allow for more advanced features, such as charging, and controlling an iPad through a head unit.

Verizon settles with FCC on 'phantom' phone fees for $77.8m
Verizon today agreed to a consent decree (PDF) in a settlement with the FCC that will see it pay a total of $77.8 million in a dispute over "phantom" data fees. The deal will have Verizon pay $25 million directly to the US treasury as well as $52.8 million to compensate the roughly 15 million customers who were charged the unexpected data rates from November 2007 onwards. The refunds have already started and should take place within the next 45 days.

NC State gurus find 'Goldilocks' of DNA self-assembly, look to improve drug-delivery vehicles
We're guessing that most Wolfpackers in the greater Raleigh area are in full-on tailgate mode right now, but aside from laying a beating on the Seminoles this evening, NC State faithful are also trumpeting a new DNA discovery that could one day make it easy to get vital drugs to hard-to-reach places within you. Researchers from the university have purportedly discovered the 'Goldilocks' of DNA self-assembly, which holds promise for technologies ranging from drug delivery to molecular sensors. The concept, known as DNA-assisted self-assembly, has been vastly improved by using "computer simulations of DNA strands to identify the optimal length of a DNA strand for self-assembly."

For those with modest text-editing needs, Apple's TextEdit is a great choice. Did you know that it's got an autocomplete option? David Mendels points out how it works at Mac OS X Hints.
As you're typing a long word, hit the escape key. A popup window will appear with a list of guesses. Use the arrow keys to find the word you want and hit enter to select. To shorten the list, keep typing. To abandon the list entirely, hit escape again to put it away.

Northrop Grumman's CaMEL 'bot features one .50 caliber gun, loads of class
When the dream factory that is Northrop Grumman needed to up the "wow factor" at its Association of the U.S. Army's Washington conference booth, it did what plenty of CES exhibitors wished they could do: it weaponized. BlackBerry Torch coming to AT&T in two fresh colors next month
Allow us to clarify, the colors are "fresh" as in "new," not as in "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air." Don't get us wrong, though: white almost always looks fresh (in the Fresh Prince sense) on a phone, and the Torch seems to be no exception -- partly thanks to the matching white keyboard. LaCie 2Big USB 3.0 cracks 300MB per second, 6TB
LaCie today upgraded its external hard drives to both speed up and take advantage of a new wave of 3TB hard drives. The 2big USB 3.0 uses two of the drives to both hit 6TB and speed up by about 20 percent. LaCie estimates a peak transfer speed of 306MB per second, which it claims is the fastest ever for a two-bay RAID drive.

11-inch MacBook Air cleared by TSA to stay in bags
The 11-inch MacBook Air can stay in a bag while being taken through airport security, the Transportation Security Administration has ruled. Because the computer is "smaller than a standard-size laptop," according to TSA spokesman Nicholas Kimball, it does not have to be scanned separately during the X-ray process. Normally, policies require larger electronics to be taken out of a bag so a scanner can get a clearer shot.

TSA: 11.6-inch MacBook Air is checkpoint-safe
The US Transportation Security Administration, or TSA, has officially stated that travelers passing through US airport security with the 11.6-inch MacBook Air will not have to remove the little laptop from their bags for inspection. Unfortunately, that's not the case with the 13-inch model.
Size is the differentiating factor. According to the TSA blog, any electronic device considered to be of a "standard laptop" size or larger must go through the x-ray machine solo. Apparently, the cutoff point is at or very near thirteen inches. The iPad, Kindle, Nook and other small devices, including the entry-level MacBook Air, may remain stowed away during screening.
As if travelers needed another reason to lust after the thing.

Apple exploring new scratch-proof coating
If a new patent application from Apple is any indication, the company is getting obsessive about making sure that future products are highly scratch-resistant.
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office published Apple's application this week titled "Nitriding Stainless Steel for Consumer Electronic Products," outlining methods for depositing a very thin layer (just over 15 microns thick) of nitride to stainless steel to provide scratch and impact resistance. Nitride coatings are unique in that they allow the natural feel and look of the stainless steel to show through, while creating a tough scratch-proof surface.
In the patent filing, Apple notes that stainless steel is a highly desirable material for consumer electronics since it is non-magnetic and doesn't hinder Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and cellular signals as much as other metals. However,

Dell Venue hits the FCC: is this the Thunder's new name?
Yes, that's right, just "Venue," not Venue Pro -- and from a glance, it looks to us like this might be the new name for the Thunder Android phone we played with a little while ago judging by this FCC filing that just crossed the wires. As far as we can tell, this thing is basically a carbon copy of the Venue Pro, except it's running Android instead of Windows Phone 7 and drops the sliding portrait keyboard in favor of a full-touch setup. Rumor has Samsung bringing Nexus Two to Nov. 8 Android event
A tentative rumor has suggested that Google might revive the Nexus phone line at Samsung's November 8 event. The device, which is being referred to as the Nexus Two but may have a different name, would be the first Android phone to ship with Gingerbread and would thus support all its features, such as possible Nexus One, Samsung would avoid its usual insistence on customizing the UI and would instead use Google's own, Android and Me heard.

Nook Color processor revealed: ARM Cortex A8-based TI OMAP3621
Barnes & Noble provided most of the specs for the Nook Color when it launched on the device on Tuesday, but notably absent was any word on the processor that powers the e-reader. Thankfully, Texas Instruments has now come out confirmed that the Nook Color uses its ARM Cortex A8-based, 45nm OMAP3621 processor (still no word on the speed). What's more, the processor is actually part of TI's eBook Development Platform, which the Nook Color also relies on. RealVNC adds "iPod Out" so cars can display iOS device screen data
RealVNC, the company behind the original VNC remote computing protocol, has added iOS to the list of devices that are supported by its VNC Mobile Solution for Automotive. In general, VNC (virtual network computing) allows users to see the display output from another computer over a network. It's commonly used to manage servers that are running without an attached monitor.
While a number of automakers have integrated iPod/iPhone control functionality, many of them have implemented rather clunky user interfaces. VNC Mobile will allow the actual iOS interface, including Cover Flow or even Google Maps, to be displayed directly on the larger in-dash touchscreen in the car. Autobot: Smartphones sprechen bald mit den Autoinnereien

In Kentucky arbeitet man dran, das Auto komplett vom Smartphone abhängig zu machen. AutoBot wird über den ODB-2 Bus im Auto (das gibt es, wir haben nachgesehen) angeschlossen und kontrolliert über das Smartphone so die Türen, den Druck in den Reifen, und kann sogar Email schicken sollte man einen Unfall gehabt haben (Autsch). Natürlich trackt es obendrein das eigene Fahrverhalten und wertet es online aus. Für 300 Dollar gibt es den Stecker, die Apps sollen für iPhone und Android kommen. Wann? Oracle claims Google 'directly copied' Java in Android
Oracle has amended its lawsuit against Google to overtly accuse the company of stealing code for Android. The initially vague complaint was changed Wednesday to charge Google with having "directly copied" several parts of code outright. About a third of the Java APIs used by developers are also "derivative" of ones Oracle uses, the updated suit read.

Google tweaks Gmail on iPhone, iPod for always-on UI
Google today rolled out an update to Gmail today that modifies the interface for iPhone and iPod touch owners. Its change swaps out the old floating toolbars, which only appeared at the end of a scroll, in favor of a fixed set of bars that stay during the entire scroll. The simple change makes it easier to rapidly delete or flag messages on the smaller screen.

New group hopes to push standard PCIe-based SSDs
A newly-formed SSD Form Factor Working Group has been formed, with the aim of bringing out a PCI Express-based SSD standard. Made up of promoter members Dell, EMC, Fujitsu, IBM and Intel, the group will focus on enterprise customers who need ever-higher performance storage that is cost effective and easy to use. While PCIe based SSDs are available now, they aren't simple and are usually reserved for servers, workstations and very high-end gamers.

Cautious 10-K filing nothing to worry about, analysts say
Some in the media are overreacting to statements in Apple's 10-K filing with the SEC, analysts say. The company's stock is down almost $4 on the NYSE as of mid-Thursday, which may be linked to a 10-K statement anticipating a gross margin decrease in "future periods." The prediction is nothing new, says Kaufman analyst Shaw Wu. It's described as consistent with Apple's recent Q4 conference call, "not to mention in every annual 10-K filing about the upcoming fiscal year as far as we can remember."

By now, we all know that the iPad has been a runaway success story, but it seems the iPad is also making waves in the business world, too. According to the Apple Blog, Ted Schadler, from Forrester, has written a report on the impact of the iPad (primarily on the enterprise market, since January 2010). Rumor: Apple, Gemalto working on integrated SIM
GigaOM is reporting on a rumor that Apple has been working with security firm Gemalto, a simcard manufacturer, to create a software-reconfigurable SIM that will be directly integrated into future European iPhones. The iPhone would then be activated on the carrier of your choice by downloading a carrier-specific app from the App Store, instead of the traditional activation methods.
Essentially, Apple wouldn't have to worry about bundling carrier-specific SIMs with the iPhone and end-users would have only virtual contact with the carriers. Something Google tried to do with the Nexus One

LG profit collapses based on shrinking phone sales
LG saw its profit fall apart today as its summer results were hurt by its weakness in phones. Its profit plunged 99 percent, down from $805.6 million a year ago to $6.7 million. The Korean company was dragged down by its mobile group, which had a record loss of $270 million. The company's total phone shipments also dropped, going down 10 percent from year to year at 28.4 million.

Hack to defeat Middle East FaceTime block
After a sudden disappearance, it has been confirmed that many Middle Eastern carriers do not support FaceTime. Now, the team at iPhoneislam.com has offered a hack to get the service working.
To make it work, you'll need a jailbroken iPhone 4 and the Cydia app. Once you've added apps.iphoneislam.com to Cydia, grab FaceTime Hacktivator. From there, you should be good to go.
Keep in mind that you jailbreak your iPhone at your own risk. If you're comfortable with that process and adding apps via Cydia, then have at it.

MacBook Air: Benchmarks zeigen, nicht das schnellste, verstecken braucht es sich aber nicht

In den Benchmarktests der MacWorld bekommt man einen ziemlich guten Überblick darüber, was man wirklich von der Geschwindigkeit der neuen MacBook Airs erwarten kann. In den Grundkonfigurationen und selbst bis hin zur schnellsten Variante des 11-Zoll MacBook Air ist es insgesamt langsamer als ein MacBook, auch wenn es natürlich bei allen festplattenintensiven Prozessen gewinnt. Das 13"-Zoll MacBook Air kann sich allerdings durchaus mit dem kleinsten MacBook Pro messen und schliesst in der schnellsten Variante die Lücke zum nächstschnelleren 15-Zoll MacBook Pro mit Core i5 Prozessor.

Even if Apple CEO Steve Jobs isn't interested (for now at least) in giving his followers a touchscreen desktop computing experience, Troll Touch is. The company has added touchscreen monitors to its existing lineup with a pair of options based on the latest 27-inch LED-backlit Cinema Display.
Troll Touch is offering an integrated display, where the front glass is replaced with an analog resistive panel, or a user installable option, where the same resistive panel can be applied to an existing display and removed when not needed. Both options come with calibration and driver software.

The Roseville Galleria Apple Store has already re-opened, well ahead of some other shops in the fire-damaged mall, a report says. To do so Apple had to obtain an occupancy permit from city officials. Dear Apple: Tear out your optical drives
The only company that can make Apple's products look comparatively ugly is Apple. Take for example the new MacBook Air. Grab one of those babies, put it next to a current MacBook or MacBook Pro, and the bigger notebooks look like monstrosities. Now, I'm sure Apple will start to port many of the improvements of the latest Air -- like the SSD chips and improved screens -- over to the MacBook and MacBook Pro, but I'm hoping that Apple takes the biggest step that it can regarding the MacBook line and tears out the optical drives.

Sony hints at PlayStation phone, says iPhone poor for games
SCEA's senior marketing VP Peter Dille in an interview late Wednesday dropped strong hints of the upcoming PlayStation phone and was already setting it up as a competitor to the iPhone. He saw the PSP as being hindered by being Wi-Fi only and its having to be a secondary device. iPad now available at Verizon, AT&T stores
Today is October 28th, and that means the iPad is now available in Verizon Wireless and AT&T retail locations. The arrangement was announced October 14th. As a refresher, here's how it works.
At Verizon stores, the iPad (all models) is sold bundled with a Verizon MiFi 2200. The access point offers a 1GB allowance in exchange for $20/month with no contract. Bundles start at $US630 for the 16GB iPad plus a MiFi and go up to $730 for the 32G model and $830 for the 64GB model. At AT&T stores, 3G models are sold with not external access device.

10K filing shows Apple up to 46,600 workers
Apple gained a significant number of workers during its fiscal 2010 period, a closer look at the company's 10-K filing reveals. Vudu coming to Boxee on computers, Boxee Box
Vudu today landed a coup for its presence in digital media hubs and said its streaming movie service would reach Boxee devices. Both the imminent Boxee Box and the clients for Linux, Macs and Windows PCs will have access to the full catalog. HP Palm quietly debuts new HP Palm Logo
We don't know how this one slipped past us, but somewhere in the past few weeks (on October 19th as far as we can tell), HP and Palm's logos got together to form what you see to the left: the HP Palm logo. The new, hybrid logo is on both Palm's website and Facebook page, so this should quell any fears that the world might lose Palm's branding all together. Anode tech may lead to 30% higher capacity lith-ion battery
A research team at Japan's Advanced Industrial Science and Technology has developed a new anode technology that could boost the lifespan of a lithium-ion battery charge by as much as 30 percent. The synthesis method, known as "soft chemistry," creates a titanium oxide that is significantly more efficient than the lithium titanate it would replace. A battery could generate about 225mAh of power for each gram versus 175mAh today.

Motorola this morning reported a rare increase in the total number of phones it sells and not just smartphones. It shipped 9.1 million phones overall, an increase over the spring's 8.3 million. Every so often I see a free app that is just dying to be used as an iPhone demonstration. The candidate for today is the American Museum of Natural History app called Cosmic Discoveries.
When you open the app, you see an image of Saturn. It's a bit crinkly, so you dive in for a closer look, dragging your fingers apart to trigger a zoom. As planned, the Verizon iPad bundle has gone on sale. Nintendo has reported its first half-year loss in seven years. For the six months to September 30, the Japanese gaming giant reported a $24.7 million loss. Eee Pad kommt erst im März

Nach dem Abschluss des Geschäftsjahres 2010 per Ende September hat Apple gestern den Börsenbericht zuhanden der Aufsichtsbehörde SEC eingereicht. Der Bericht enthält zahlreiche Details über Apples Geschäftsgang und Prognosen für Apples wirtschaftliche Aussichten. Im Geschäftsjahr 2010 hat Apple auffallend viel Geld in Werbung investiert, nämlich 691 Millionen US-Dollar. Gegenüber 2009 entspricht dies einem Wachstum um 190 Millionen Dollar. Für Forschung und Entwicklung gab Apple 1.8 Milliarden US-Dollar aus, 500 Millionen mehr als noch 2009. Auch bei den Mitarbeiterzahlen ist das Wachstum zu spüren. Die Zahl der Vollzeitbeschäftigten stieg um 35 Prozent auf 46’600. Für das Geschäftsjahr 2011 erwartet Apple einen noch härteren Konkurrenzkampf, insbesondere im iPhone- und iPad-Geschäft. Aus diesem Grund werde die Bruttogewinnspanne sinken.

HTC Mecha leaked on HTC Sense
We've been hearing the hushed whispers of an HTC Mecha handset for a few months. Now we've got solid evidence of its existence thanks to the HTC's own HTC Sense web site that lists the Mecha along side the Desire HD and Desire Z when signing up for an account. Unfortunately, the image used for the Mecha (found after the break) appears to be the old Hero handset unless HTC is planning to resurrect that particular industrial design (which we doubt). The wobble or "jelly" effect seen in video captured by cameras with CMOS sensors relying upon rolling shutters instead of the global shutters found in cameras with CCDs. HTML5 für die Hälfte aller Videos verfügbar
Mehr als die Hälfte der Web-Videos ist mittlerweile in HTML5 verfügbar. Das ergab eine Erhebung von MeFeedia. Zum Vergleich: Im Mai 2010 waren es nur 26 Prozent, im Januar sogar nur 10 Prozent. Abgespielt werden auf Desktop-Umgebungen jedoch weiterhin vor allem Flash-Inhalte.

Apple developing open SIM for iPhone service, RFID sales
Apple is reportedly working with chip manufacturer Gemalto to deliver an iPhone SIM card capable of working with multiple carriers, allowing users to shop for mobile service directly from the Apple Store. The deal likely also involves authentication for contactless, RFID mobile transactions.

User who need to store large amounts of protected data have a further option starting today, as Apricorn adds a 750-gigabyte external USB/eSATA laptop drive with built-in 128- or 256-bit AES encryption to its Aegis Padlock lineup. Foxconn helping to shoulder CDMA iPhone production?
Foxconn has been brought on to help take some of the production workload for the CDMA iPhone, industry contacts believed on Wednesday. Known in China through its parent label Hon Hai, Foxconn has reportedly been asked to share manufacturing "evenly" with the existing manufacturer Pegatron. The Taiwan Economic News suggests that Foxconn alone has been asked to make 15 million iPhones through all of 2011; by extension, as many as 30 million CDMA iPhones would be made across the two companies.

Some Apple execs exercise stock options
Several Apple executives took advantage of the fact that Apple stock hit an all-time high recently to cash out some stock options for extra christmas spending money. Apple hit $319 on October 18 and Bertrand Serlet, software engineering senior VP exercised 5,000 options at $318.50 while controller Betsy Rafael, operations SVP Jeffrey Williams and hardware SVP Bob Mansfield all sold at over $300.
Mansfield in particular made a killing exercising 40,000 options that were priced at $36.54 for $308 each. That's a tidy profit of $10.844 million. Google exec calls Android acquistion its 'best deal ever'
It's easy to forget at this point, but Android wasn't a Google creation. Google bought the company in 2005 for an undisclosed sum (estimated to be around $50 million) and, well, let's just say things worked out pretty well for them. How well? Google's vice president of corporate development, David Lawee, told attendees at the Stanford Accel Symposium this week that the acquisition was quite simply Google's "best deal ever." Lawee further went on to note that he did have some initial skepticism about the deal, and recalls saying "I hope this guy does something" after seeing Andy Rubin around the building for two years. Microsoft 'Tags' 2 billion real-world objects with its phone-friendly barcodes
Microsoft might be late to the cameraphone-able barcode game, but it appears to be making up for lost time. Its multi-colored (and, frankly, rather attractive) Tag barcodes added a few important innovations on top of the general QR code concept, and apparently to good effect: 2 billion Tags have been printed since the January 2009 launch, and 1 billion of those Tags were printed in the past four months. Sprint fails to impress Wall Street with Q3 2010 earnings, still notches 644k net adds
Sprint certainly isn't out of the woods yet, but at least it's picking up customers from somewhere. The company's Q3 2010 earnings were ushered out today, and while its stock fell around ten percent on the news, a few silver linings were present. The carrier saw postpaid subscriber losses of 107,000, but that's an 87 percent improvement compared to Q3 2009. The CDMA network added approximately 276,000 postpaid customers during the quarter, 471,000 (net) prepaid subscribers and 644,000 total wireless subscribers from a net perspective. It also landed its second best postpaid churn result ever, but the bottom line still looks battered -- the operator announced a net loss of nearly a billion dollars ($911 million, if you're scouting sp

Barnes & Noble intros Nook Color: the worst of all worlds
Barnes & Noble introduced a new color version of its Nook eBook reader on Tuesday and as expected, it features a color touch screen. Unfortunately for B&N, this new device is unlikely to pose a significant challenge to either Apple's iPad or Amazon's Kindle.

BlackBerry maker's shares spike on rumors of takeover
Research in Motion shares have jumped almost eight percent in the past two days over rumors that the BlackBerry creator may be a takeover target. The possible buyer hasn't been named, but Kaufman Bros. analyst Shaw Wu speculated that Cisco would make the most sense were the rumor to be true. RIM's strength in business was considered a good fit and could help Cisco's "'secret' consumer ambitions," he said.

Apple ad spending surges by 38% in 2010
Apple's 10-K filing with the SEC reveals a significant jump in ad spending for the company's 2010 fiscal year. While 2009 ad spending reached $501 million, Apple boosted its 2010 spending by 38 percent to reach $691 million. Although a boost in ad expenditures is expected, the company only added a total of $34 million from 2007 to 2009.

A bumper crop of circumstantial evidence surrounding the Android-based PlayStation Phone is starting to come together today -- when it rains, it pours, as they say -- and one particularly interesting thread suggests that the ecosystem surrounding the device might be called "Z-System." An astute tipster notes that the term appears in the upper left of one of our shots, which maps to a domain -- z-system.com, naturally -- that's owned by Sony Ericsson. New Mac Trojan uncovered: "Boonana"
SecureMac and Intego, among other security firms, today alerted the Mac community to a new Trojan threat, trojan.osx.boonana.a (Intego gives it the name OSX/Koobface.a), which is spreading via social networking sites like Facebook and e-mail. The trojan appears as a link in messages with the subject "Is this you in this video?", and when users click on the link, a Java applet downloads an installer, which modifies system files to bypass passwords and other protections.

The MacBook Air's unique display
The folks at TechRestore have taken it upon themselves to remove the gloss from Apple's MacBook Airs. In the process, they've discovered that the laptop's multi-layered display is truly a thing to behold.
Calling the screen "paper thin," TechRestore CEO Shannon Jean tells ZDNet how the display differs from nearly every other one he's seen. "It's in layers, it's insane," he says. "I don't think there's ever been a screen like this used in a laptop. It's very similar to a Sony PSP screen, where the LCD panel and backlight are separate pieces."
