Briefly: PowerSchool access from iPad, PocketCAS turns 1

A new iPad application designed to help teachers monitor students academic progress has been released by Pearson. PowerTeacher Mobile is a free application that integrates with Pearson's online grade system, PowerSchool. With this first release teaches can perform a variety of tasks, such as creating and grading assignments, viewing student groups, managing class lists, accessing student alerts, and more. Google shutters GOOG-411 due to smartphone voice search

Google this afternoon told GOOG-411 users that it was shutting down the service November 12. The company justified dropping its unusual phone-in service by pointing to the level of smartphone apps. Voice search in both Android and the iPhone's Google Mobile app, as well as Android's support for Voice Actions, took away much of the need for this kind of service.

Notion Ink gets LongBox for tablet comic books, iOS coming

Notion Ink, maker of the upcoming Adam tablet, has just announced a partnership with LongBox Digital that will see the latter's digital comic book library and system come preloaded onto the Adam. Like other front ends, it will support a direct download store. Under the deal, LongBox will provide its comic book interface on the four announced Notion Ink tablets and others that come out in the next two years that use Notion Ink's Genesis system.

A 7-inch iPad has actually existed for some time at Apple, says The Loop's Jim Dalrymple. Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode 1 now out on iPhone

I've been away at GDC Online this week, so I almost missed it, but a brand new Sonic the Hedgehog game (that Sega is calling part 4, Episode 1) is out now for the iPhone. This is a pretty big deal -- not only is this a brand new title in the Sonic series, but it's also not coming out for other consoles until next week, so Sega has actually premiered this game on Apple's iOS platform. Qualcomm's summer results said spiked by CDMA iPhone orders

Qualcomm's summer results will reflect a major uptick in orders for a CDMA iPhone, Wedge Partners analyst Brian Blair said in a note today. He saw "meaningful order strength" towards the end of the calendar quarter that was attributed directly to Apple orders for chipsets. We haven't seen any reason to love anything that's attempted to combine the comfort of Windows 7 with the sheer unpreparedness of Android in a dual-boot netbook form factor, Acer's Aspire One D255 included. Adobe AIR runtime for Android lands, apps already starting to follow

We've been looking forward to this for a while, and now it's here: Adobe AIR runtime for Android. That means developers using Flash Builder or Flash Professional CS5 can publish AIR apps directly to the Android Market, and all users will need is this little runtime from the Market and they're set. EA Mobile announces fall iOS game lineup

If you've been waiting for SimCity to make its way to iPad/HD format, you don't have much longer to wait. EA Mobile has recently announced its game release slate for the rest of fall 2010. Along with FIFA 11, EA Sports NBA Elite 11, and others, the company will be releasing the iPad-specific SimCity Deluxe HD. The game will obviously feature a bigger, interactive display and an optimized HUD that takes advantage of the increased screen real estate. Yahoo Messenger to hit Android, iPhone with 3G video chat

Yahoo's Americas mobile VP David Katz in a discussion today promised that it would bring a version of Yahoo Messenger with 3G or 4G video chat to smartphones. Those with an iPhone 4 as well as Android phones with front cameras, such as the Samsung Epic 4G or T-Mobile's new myTouch, will have the option of a two-way chat regardless of which network they use. Foxconn study shows 50% of workers have faced abuse

A study leaked today by the Chinese government through the state-backed Global Times suggests a large amount of violence and other rough treatment at Foxconn plants. About 50 percent of the 1,736 workers secretly studied allegedly said they had faced some kind of abuse at factories. About 16.4 percent of that was directly from supervisors or other managers.

Microsoft licenses dozens of patents from Access and Acacia, including some Palm inventions

Complete details on the deal are still a bit light, but it's just been revealed today that Microsoft has licensed a total of 74 patents from Acacia Research Corp. and Access Co. Ltd, some of which come PalmSource, the software company spun off from Palm Inc. in 2003. As of November 8th, Apple is bringing an end to viewing photos, videos and other files shared using .Mac HomePage, an e-mail notice says. Oppenheimer ups Apple stock target to $345

Oppenheimer analyst Yair Reiner has raised his 12- to 18-month price target for Apple stock to $345, citing several expectations for the company's Q4 results announcement. Revenue and EPS forecasts, for instance, have been increased from $18.5 billion and $4.01 to $19.9 billion and $4.41. Apple has given final notice to those publishing content through the old .Mac service. A note was sent to MobileMe members today stating that as of the 8th November, web pages published using the obsolete .Mac service will become unavailable. Those publishing via iWeb will not be affected. If you're one of those still going about things this way, fret not. Your content will not be deleted. While the basics have stayed the same for a while -- $200 for an annual iPhone sweetened by a slowly descending overall plan price -- carriers like AT&T of course have a lot of maneuvering to do in the periphery to make sure they're still getting their margins. Bund hebt iPhone-Verbot auf

Nachdem im Frühling bekannt wurde, dass Bundesangestellte keine iPhones mehr benutzen durften, rudert die oberste Informatikbehörde nun zurück. Dies berichtet der Tages Anzeiger. Ab kommendem Monat können Angestellte des Bundes wieder iPhones bestellen. Wer privat ein iPhone besitzt, darf damit nun wieder - wie mit anderen Smartphones auch - Adressen, Kontakte, Mails und weitere Daten mit dem Arbeitsplatz synchronisieren und das iPhone für die Arbeit verwenden. Als das iPhone-Verbot im Frühjahr bekannt geworden war, wurden Sicherheitsbedenken als Begründung angegeben. In einigen Abteilungen wurden die iPhones der Angestellten gar eingezogen. Nun hat die Informatikbehörde den Entscheid rückgängig gemacht und gleichzeitig neue Richtlinien ausgearbeitet, welche für alle Smartphones gelten. So dürfen beispielsweise bestimmte vertrauliche Dokumente generell nicht auf Smartphones bearbeitet werden.

Urteil: T-Mobile verliert Berufung gegen VoIP-Anbieter Sipgate

Der VoIP-Anbieter Sipgate hat im Rechtsstreit mit T-Mobile vor dem hanseatischen Oberlandesgericht Hamburg einen vorläufigen Sieg errungen. Rogers first in Canada with LTE 4G trials

Rogers this week announced it has become the first wireless provider in Canada to begin trials of a Long Term Evolution (LTE) network for 4G. The technical trial is being conducted in cooperation with Ericsson Canada in Ottawa, the country's capital. The theoretical maximum wireless transfer speeds of LTE are 150Mbps.

Verizon, Disney deal means ESPN on tablets, ESPN 3D and Goal Line channel for FiOS
