iOS 4.2 SDK beta 3 available for download
Apple has posted an updated beta for the iOS 4.2 SDK. iOS 4.2 is expected to debut "in November" for general consumption. If you are part of the developer program, you can head on over to the dev center now, authenticate with your credentials and download the newest release.
As always, beta SDKs remain behind an NDA wall, so we cannot post specific details about changes. Developers will find full release notes and update read-me's at the site itself.
Good luck and happy developing. Also, for those who seek alternative means of acquiring and installing the 4.2 beta firmware for iDevices, be warned that you very well may render your phone or pad inoperative if you load the new OS version without an accompanying developer certi

Apple posts Ping guidelines for musicians
Apple has released official artist guidelines for Ping, the recently-launched social network integrated into iTunes 10. The PDF document takes musicians through creating a profile on Ping, and subsequently posting content. It moreover pushes "best practices," making a number of recommendations on how a profile should be used.

MegaSeg 5.5 brings the beat to Magic Mouse, trackpads
Mac-only pro audio/video DJ and broadcast automation software MegaSeg has been updated to version 5.5, introducing a new Wave Viewer, redesigned decks and trackpad beat syncing and scrubbing compatible with MacBook trackpads as well as Apple's Magic Trackpad and Magic Mouse. EU backs French subsidies of music downloads
In a new attempt to fight the rising rate of music piracy, the French government will subsidize the cost of digital music, a Tuesday report said. The strategy was approved by the European Union and was praised for its promotion of cultural diversity. French residents who buy a card to download music from subscription-based websites will only have to pay half of a 50 euro (about $70) card, with the government paying for the remainder.

NES controller gains a Rumble Pak, DIYer gains a dedicated following
Ah, the Rumble Pak. It was arguably the must-have accessory for the Nintendo 64, and had it been around during the time of R.B.I. Baseball, we're certain it would've went over well. One Andy Goetz decided that he'd be interested in reshaping history a bit, and spent 20-some-odd hours building a rumble device for his NES controller as a deadline loomed. O2, Vodafone to sell iPhone 4 in Germany
O2 and Vodafone have both announced plans to sell the iPhone 4 in Germany, according to Dow Jones. Launches should take place within the next few weeks, although subscription plans and pricing details have yet to be revealed. The news marks the end of a contract between Apple and T-Mobile, which has given the latter party exclusive rights to carry the German iPhone since 2007.

Apple this afternoon seeded the Developer Center with iOS 4.2 beta 3 and its companion desktop app iTunes 10.1 beta 2. The releases don't include any immediate change notes but come exactly on Apple's familiar two-week schedule, after beta 2 in late September. Bloomberg Game Changers to feature segment on Steve Jobs
The brand-new documentary series Bloomberg Game Changers will air its second episode on Thursday, October 14th at 9:00 PM ET with Steve Jobs as the subject. It will feature interviews with a who's who from Apple's history, including Steve Wozniak, John Scully, Robert X. Cringley and Guy Kawasaki. Additionally, Dreamworks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg and Michael Moritz will appear.
The hour-long special will follow Steve's career from the infamous garage to the release of the iPad and everything in between.
The first episode in the series featured Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg and was very well done. Be sure to check it out episode two on Thursday, even if you think you know the story.

Panasonic's 'Parallel link' manufacturing robot can learn new tricks
It may not be quite as whimsical as some of Panasonic's other robots, but the company's new "Parallel link" manufacturing bot might just be one of the most important the company's developed in some time. Not only does it boast a 50% reduction in power consumption compared to some traditional one-armed manufacturing robots, but it's able to learn new tasks simply by having someone move its arm through the motions. It also supposedly has an "affordable" price, although we're guessing it's still a bit out of reach if you're just looking for something to help out around the house. Bloomberg to air hour-long Steve Jobs special
Bloomberg TV is planning to air a one-hour profile of Apple CEO Steve Jobs this Thursday, beginning at 9PM Eastern. The special is part of an 11-episode "Game Changers" series, featuring a number of major executives such as Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg, Twitter's Biz Stone and Evan Williams, and Oracle's Larry Ellison. The series will ultimately wrap up in January.

Hyundai IT shows off 70-inch multitouch table concept
There's not a ton of details on this one just yet, but Hyundai IT is reportedly showing off this 70-inch multitouch table at at the Korea Electronics Show this week -- in concept form, at least. While there's no specs -- apart from the fact that it's "HD" -- Hyundai is apparently saying that you'd be able to use the display either as a Surface-like multitouch table or as a TV, although it's not clear if that means it actually tilts up. Contrary to appearances, however, the table apparently doesn't function as a phone. Here's hoping Hyundai will actually show it off in action once the show gets underway.

Palm Pre 2 in the wild?
Okay, now that we've got a bigger shot of this thing, we can definitely say that it's neither a Pre nor a Pre Plus so assuming it's not some sophisticated fake, you're feasting your eyes on Palm's next-gen model here. Given how close it is to the model it'll presumably be replacing, we can't help but feel like the Pre 2 should've actually been the phone we call the Pre Plus today -- and it should've launched six (or more) months ago -- but in the event webOS 2.0 doesn't come to older devices, we suppose that alone will be the impetus some current owners need to upgrad

Delicious Library may regain iPhone support... sort of
Once upon a time, Delicious Library was available for the iPhone, and it was quickly yanked from the App Store due to infringing upon Amazon's API TOS. Microsoft GPU video encoding patent could hurt creatives
A US patent filing published today has raised concerns as it could give Microsoft control of hardware-accelerated video encoding. A continuance of an application for "accelerated video encoding using a graphics processing unit" would cover the common technique of calculating motion for video processing with the video chipset in a computer rather than the regular, usually slower main CPU. Its techniques are broad and cover tricks like turning each frame into macroblocks to process them in parallel.

Apple may have sold 4 million Macs this year
Fortune is suggesting that Apple could have sold as many as four million Macs this year, which would be pretty astounding. PC sales in general have been down lately, but the Mac seems to be immune, still selling like hotcakes. Hitting the four million mark in 2010 would be a record for Mac sales, and that's huge, especially when most of the focus on Apple (even from the company) has been on "mobile devices."
In fact, Fortune suggests that those devices may have had an effect on Mac sales -- customers coming in to the stores to look at or buy iPhones and iPads may have walked out with either new Macs, or just a better impression of the computers. Both O2 and Vodafone have announced plans to sell the iPhone 4 in Germany. Trent Reznor: Mark Zuckerberg is no Steve Jobs
In a recent interview with Drowned in Sound, former Nine Inch Nails front man Trent Reznor discussed the Social Network soundtrack and exactly why Mark Zuckerberg is no Steve Jobs.
Reznor is currently promoting the soundtrack he recorded for The Social Network, otherwise known as "the Facebook movie." In the interview, Trent describes why he's not a fan of Facebook; specifically, the license that it and similar services seem to give users to exaggerate themselves, saying, "I've seen that with people I know in real life, and I check them out online, it's not always the same person."

ZTE announces 7-inch ZTE Light Android tablet
ZTE didn't exactly manage to impress with its low-cost ZTE Racer Android handset, but the company's now back with yet another Android device: the 7-inch ZTE Light tablet. Not a ton in the way of surprises here, as you might expect, but the tablet does cover all the basics with Android 2.1, WiFi and 3G connectivity, built-in GPS, an SD card slot for expansion, and a promised ten hours of battery life -- along with what appears to be a custom Android skin. Study claims iPhone 4 has 68 percent more damage incidents
A new study released by a warranty provider, SquareTrade, claims a 68 percent higher accident rate for the iPhone 4 than the iPhone 3GS. Based on data from over 20,000 iPhone 4s, the study also suggests that 15.5 percent of iPhone 4 buyers will have an accident within a year, and that the device's screen accounts for four-fifths of the damage that occurred in the last four months. The latter figure is said to be "slightly higher" than the proportion for the 3GS.

iOS social apps attracting more eyes than top TV shows
In the battle for viewer eyes, Apple appears to be making some huge strides. How huge? Well, ad group Flurry says that socially aware iOS apps now have a larger audience share than some of the top TV shows.
Flurry estimated that 19 million iOS device owners are connecting for more than 22 minutes -- the length of an average prime-time TV show, minus ads. That puts iOS viewing on a par with such popular shows as ABC's "Dancing with the Stars" and NBC's Sunday Night Football.

Japanese firm to buy ngmoco for up to $403 million
A Japanese game developer, DeNA, is buying American firm ngmoco in a deal which could be worth up to $403 million, according to Reuters. At least $303 million is being offered in cash, shares and stock options, while the remaining amount is contingent on ngmoco's 2011 sales. ngmoco was one of the first high-profile developers of iOS games, and is responsible for titles like We Rule, GodFinger and Rolando.

A number of iPad publications are currently vulnerable to piracy, says the Huffington Post. With affected apps, the hacking process is described as relatively simple. Users need only root around an iPad with a software tool like iPhone Explorer to copy out a particular PLIST file, responsible for managing an app's download information. After flipping any "purchasable" items to "viewable," the PLIST is copied back, where it then allows people to download issues of a publication for free after choosing to delete non-existent local copies.

Foxconn denies high abuse rate in Chinese factories
Foxconn has issued a response today to the allegations of violence and worker abuse in its plants in a recently leaked study. In a statement sent out early on Tuesday, the Apple iPhone maker and Dell and HP supplier these allegations of long working hours, militaristic work culture and violence towards workers are unsubstantiated. Apple publishes Ping guidelines for artists
Apple has published official Ping usage guidelines for artists which describe exactly how to create an artist profile and begin posting content.
According to the guidelines [PDF], artists are encouraged to hold off on creating a profile until they have several posts ready to go, because "Fans will be far more likely to follow you if they can tell that your profile is active." I agree with Apple there. Additionally, artists are encouraged to submit videos (2GB max), as long as they're in .mov, .m4v or .mp4 formats. Apple also suggests that artists create videos with iPhones whenever possible.
Apple also lists what's not allowed on an artist profile, including "pornography, hate speech, racism, nudity or drug use."

Das neue Format soll zwischen 30 und 90 Seiten (30000-90000 Wörter) umfassen und eine eigene Sektion im Kindle Store bekommen, Amazon will dabei selbst als Verlag auftreten und ruft potentielle zukünftige Schriftsteller dazu auf, Skripts einzureichen. Irgendwo zwischen Blog und eBook haben sie anscheinend eine Marktlücke ausgemacht (oder liegt es einfach an unserer kürzeren Aufmerksamkeitsspanne?), die es nun zu stopfen gilt. Indian CDMA carriers in talks with Apple for iPhone
Two CDMA-based carriers in India are negotiating with Apple for the iPhone, sources tell the Wall Street Journal. The companies are Reliance Communications and Tata Teleservices, the latter of which at least has allegedly been in talks for four to five months. Although there is no indication of when either carrier might launch, the news is thought to be more evidence that Apple is building a CDMA iPhone, primarily for a debut with Verizon in early 2011.

Indiecade 2010: Superbrothers' Sword and Sorcery EP preview
I first saw Superbrothers' Sword and Sorcery in person back at GDC earlier this year. This past weekend, developer Capy's Nathan Vella met up with me at the IndieCade festival in Culver City, California to show off the latest build of the game. It's much farther along in development these days. While the GDC demo was more of a working prototype, Vella said the title is basically content-complete, and the creators are just polishing out the kinks at this point.

Apple near approval for iPad in Korea, to take on Galaxy Tab
South Korea's Communications Commission today said Apple had asked for approval to sell the iPad in the country. A decision was expected within the next five days and could lead to sales shortly afterwards. Apple's only official Korean iPhone carrier, KT, said it wanted to sell the iPad starting in November if there were no obstacles.

Kleine Sensation: Moog, eigentlich eherne Gralshüter der analogen Klangerzeugung, bereiten ihre erste iOS App vor. Peter Kirn von CreateDigitalMusic durfte schonmal einen exklusiven Blick drauf werfen und findet, dass Filtatron druchaus eine Moog-Einstiegsdroge sein kann. Wie der Name schon andeutet handelt es sich bei der App um einen Filter mit LFO, Feedback und Distortion und einem Delay. Gefiltert werden kann wahlweise das Mikro / der Lineeingang oder Samples aus dem Rechner, dazu kann Filtatron wohl auch selbst sampeln und bis zu zwei Minuten lange Samples loopen. Klingt auf jeden Fall schonmal sehr interessant, wann und zu welchem Preis Filtatron kommt, ist aber noch unbekannt.

A little while back, I wrote about an app called Corkbin -- it helped you track and share the various wines that you tasted while out and about. A few commenters asked for something similar for beer, and onTap is exactly that. It's made by the same company, and it serves the same purpose. When trying out a brand new beer (or an old favorite), you can snap a picture of it with your iPhone, log it, and even share it across Facebook or Twitter.

iPhone 5: Keine Unterstützung für 4G-Netze
Wie TechCrunch berichtet, wird Apples nächste iPhone-Generation, mit der man Mitte des kommenden Jahres rechnen darf, keine Mobilfunknetze der vierten Generation unterstützen. So genannte LTE-Netze (Long Term Evolution), welche Datenraten von 100 Megabits pro Sekunde ermöglichen, werden derzeit in zahlreichen Ländern getestet und aufgebaut, doch erst wenige Mobiltelefone unterstützen die neue Technologie.
Es wird erwartet, dass das iPhone 5 (sofern es denn so heissen wird) ein Dual-Mode GSM/CDMA-Handy sein wird. Das iPhone 4 funktioniert derzeit nur in GSM-Netzen, die Einführung einer CDMA-Variante in wenigen Monaten gilt aber als nahezu gesichert. GSM und CDMA sind beides Mobilfunkstandards der dritten Generation, ein Dual-Mode-iPhone würde auf sämtlichen verbreiteten 3G-Netzen weltweit funktionieren.
Zwar rühren die Mobilfunkanbieter schon jetzt massiv die Werbetrommel für ihre LTE-Netze, die Technik steckt jedoch noch in den Kinderschuhen. In der Schweiz betreibt die Swisscom zu Testzwecken ein LTE-Netz

Olympus expects PEN cameras to replace entry DSLRs
Olympus' SLR Product Manager Toshiyuki Terada in a recently discovered interview said the company was likely to use its PEN cameras to replace its entry level. The executive told Poland's Fotopolis it did "not have concrete plans" to update traditional entry DSLRs like the E-620 and could move to Micro Four Thirds cameras for a similar amount of performance. Photographers particularly attached to the larger bodies could get lens mount adapters for full Four Thirds or else trade up to a pro camera like the E-5.

Schlaumeier von der University of Utah haben ein System ausgetüftelt, das Nutzern von Navigationsgeräten die einzuschlagende Richtung an einer Fingerkuppe anzeigt. Im Prototyp des "Shear Feedback" kommt dabei ein Trackpoint aus einem alten Thinkpad zum Einsatz, der je nach Bedarf etwas in die Richtung geneigt wird, in die der Nutzer sich wenden soll. In ersten Tests hat sich das System laut den Entwicklern als ziemlich effizient erwiesen - der gefühlten Anzeige wird angeblich sogar williger gefolgt als akustischen Ansagen. Sinn und Zweck der Übung ist es unterdessen, die Aufmerksamkeit vom Navi-Bildschirm weg auf das Geschehen auf der Straße zu lenken. Vielversprechend.

Microsoft stellt Windows Phone 7 vor
Microsoft-CEO Steve Ballmer hat auf einem Presseevent das neue Smartphone-Betriebssystem Windows Phone 7 vorgestellt. Mit Windows Phone 7 unternimmt Microsoft einen neuen Versuch, um im wachsenden Smartphone-Geschäft mit RIM, Apple, Google und Nokia zu konkurrenzieren. Das neue OS wurde von Grund auf neu gestaltet und ist nicht kompatibel mit früheren Mobilvarianten von Windows.
Der Homescreen von Windows Phone 7 enthält keine Apps, sondern so genannte Hubs. Diese kachelartigen Flächen dienen einerseits als eine Art Widget und zeigen wichtige Informationen automatisch und in Echtzeit direkt auf dem Startbildschirm an (z.B. einen Termin oder eine neue Nachricht), andererseits dienen sie auch als Startbutton für einzelne Anwendungen. Microsoft möchte mit Windows Phone 7 sowohl Privat- als auch Businesskunden ansprechen. Zu den wichtigsten Features zählt die Anbindung an diverse Online-Services von Microsoft. Walmart confirms iPad reaching its stores on Friday
Walmart this evening confirmed that the iPad would reach its stores this week. The tablet arrives in its stores on Friday, October 15, and will include all models at the same prices that Apple charges. "Hundreds" of stores will have it at first, Walmart said, but the expansion should reach 2,300 US shops by mid-November.

Sofie surgical robot gives haptic feedback for a more
Surgical procedures assisted by robots are nothing new -- they can be more precise and less invasive -- and now it looks like a new upgrade could make them even better. The main drawback of a surgical robot is that the human surgeon performing the operation gets no tactile feedback, but that's not the case with Sofie. No Comment: Denmark's Parliament members get free iPhones
It's true that the iPhone was previously banned from the floor of the Danish Folketing (Parliament) by its President Thor Pedersen. This was at least partially due to Member of Parliament Sophie Haestorp Andersen updating her Facebook page 59 times during a prolonged debate -- certainly more than is polite. Nevertheless, it was reported by Politiken.DK that last week all 179 Members of Parliament and an undisclosed number of the staff of 1,000 adminstrators have each been given a 16GB iPhone3GS.

Yahoo Messenger for iPhone updates with 3G video chats
Yahoo tonight posted its expected 2.0 update to Yahoo Messenger (free, App Store) to add two-way video chat. The feature makes it one of the first iOS apps to support two-way video chat over 3G and gives iPhone 4 and fourth generation iPod touch owners the option of chatting with the front or back camera. iPhone 3GS users can also join in with the back camera.

Developer Andrei Doubrovski updated his add-on for advanced users of Adobe Photoshop Elements, Elements+, to version 3.0 with support for the recently-released PE v9 for Mac. Mac 101: Inserting or typing uncommon characters
As a Mac consultant, I'm often asked some pretty bizarre questions. One that I frequently hear is "How do I type <some special character> on my Mac?" A good example of this is people who want to type fractions that look like this -- ½ -- rather than like 1/2, or plop a character like an umbrella -- ☂ -- or a skull and crossbones -- ☠ -- in the middle of a sentence.

We just got a quick look at a previously Korea-bound Samsung X430 laptop that Microsoft has tapped as a "Microsoft Store Exclusive." It's pretty good hardware, both inside and outside, for the price. Motorola Terminator may pack Tegra 2, rival iPhone on games
A significant leak Monday hints that Motorola is developing a major smartphone to mark its future spin-off and a possible way to take on Apple in mobile gaming. Nicknamed the Terminator, the phone would use a dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2. The new chip is estimated by NVIDIA to run 3D games five times faster in 3D gaming than an older single-core 1GHz chip, and Android and Me suspects this may play a major role in its focus.

iOS update forthcoming to fix Alarm Clock app bug
Our intrepid Kiwi reporter, Chris Rawson, recently told TUAW readers about a mysterious bug that hit his iPhone on the morning of September 25th when New Zealand switched to Daylight Saving Time. iOS users in Australian time zones that follow Daylight Saving Time had a similarly rude awakening on the morning of October 3rd when recurring alarms in the iOS Alarm Clock app went off an hour early.
What's happening? There's a bug in the Alarm Clock app that has been affecting users when a change to DST occurs. Other iOS users in Queensland, Austraila also reported that their alarm clocks adjusted to the Daylight Saving Time change on the 3rd, despite the fact that they're not

Xbox Live for Windows Phone 7: your Xbox isn't in your phone yet, but we're getting there
We just spent some serious, and we mean serious time with Xbox Live for Windows Phone 7. Just like your Xbox, this is sort of an amalgamation of "the place you go to play games" and "the place you go to ping and taunt your friends who also play games." Unfortunately, it seems there's a bit of a disconnect between phone-based scores and records and Xbox achievements -- they all add up to the same gamerscore, but you can't easily pull up your most recent Halo exploits to show off on your mobile, for instance. UK iPhone shipping times reduced
Wait times for iPhone deliveries from the UK Apple Store have dropped from three weeks to "one to two," depending on the model purchases, according to a check of the Apple UK web site. iPhone 3GS models (£419) ship in "one to two" weeks while iPhone 4 (£499/599) has dropped from three weeks delay to within two.
