iOS hits new high, Internet Explorer new low in web share

Apple and Microsoft had opposing results in web share today as iOS reached an all-time best in Net Applications' charts while Internet Explorer on the desktop reached its lowest. The iPad, iPhone and iPod touch combined climbed to reach 1.18 percent of the entire web in September. The gain was enough to keep it growing faster than Android, which was still a fifth as influential at 0.24 percent.

iControlPad using unlicensed dock connection, forced to go Bluetooth

The folks at iControlPad can't seem to catch a break -- the design for the plug-in iPhone controller was finally finished, but the creators are now backing off of that design. Specifically, they're worried about Apple's lawsuit against Sanho, in which the battery manufacturer was sued for creating products that unofficially connected to dock connectors on iPhones and iPod touches. Samsung to drop Symbian support before 2011, isolate Nokia

Samsung through a brief message for developers warned that it was dropping support for Symbian work before the end of 2011 in a sign of larger trouble for Symbian. Development labs, forums and reference content will be pulled by the morning of December 31. Samsung will also stop certifying Symbian apps by the same day and leave companies with no option but to use other forums or switch platforms.

T-Mobile G2 trouble roundup: loose hinges, missing storage?

You know the drill -- new handset, new problems. It's pretty much inevitable that sporadic reports of bugs and hardware problems are going to start popping up by day two of any major phone launch, and sure enough, complaints are starting to circulate on two biggies for the G2. First off, some of the phones are shipping with loose hinges; the most obvious symptom is that holding it upside down causes the screen to hang down, but perhaps more annoyingly, holding it at some angles causes the screen to snap shut if it's open -- still not a huge deal since most humans don't use their phones upside down, but it seems like they could've tightened up a few springs to prevent this from happening.

Olympic Developments has filed a lawsuit through the US District Court for the Central District of California, LA Division, charging several companies with violating two of its patents. The first patent, Transactional Processing System, describes a way of offering products and services through credit card transactions. The concept also involves real-time authorization. Microsoft sues Motorola over Android-related patents

Microsoft today sued Motorola for allegedly violating patents with its Android-based phones. The complaints with both the International Trade Commission and in a Western District of Washington court claim that the devices copy technology "essential" to the smartphone experience, such as calendars and contacts, e-mail sync and notifications for apps of battery and connection levels. The accusations didn't initially include any damage values, but an ITC investigation would lead to a ban on Motorola phones in the US if successful.

Smartphone app users overtake basic phone users in the US

Smartphone app users now make up the majority of those using mobile apps at all in the US, comScore said Friday. Smartphone apps went from 43.6 percent of use in August a year ago to 60.4 percent today. A similar effect has occurred with web browsers, as 55.5 percent of mobile web use is now on a smartphone where it was 41.4 percent in 2009.

GoPro outs less expensive HD Hero 960 sports cam

Action camera maker GoPro has released the HD Hero 960 bundle, its most affordable to date. Unlike the company's flagship 1080p HD Hero, which costs $300, the new device is priced at $180. Microsoft files ITC complaint against Motorola over alleged Android-related patent infringement

Wireless companies love suing one another -- well, maybe they don't "love" it, but in an age when it's virtually impossible to assemble a cellular device without extensive licensing agreements in place, it's basically an inevitability. NPD: 13% of iPads are cannibalizing PC sales

The NPD Group today found that the iPad was having a mild but significant impact on computer sales. While the effect wasn't as large as expected, about 13 percent of iPad buyers had picked one instead of a computer. The relatively low cannibalization was attributed to many buyers still being early adopters that bought the Apple tablet simply because they wanted it. Nokia today publicly confirmed a milestone for the Ovi Store that also highlighted its current struggle to gain support from developers. The company now says that it sees 2.3 million downloads every day, up from just two million only a few weeks earlier. About 200,000 new users sign on each day.

Foxconn's second salary hike takes effect

The promised second round of pay raises for Foxconn factory workers is due to come into effect in October, according to a Friday report. AT&T Voicemail Viewer brings home phone to Visual Voicemail

AT&T on Friday released the Voicemail Viewer app for iPhone (free, App store) and BlackBrry users, which lets them access their home phone messages with visual voicemail. RED hikes Scarlet price by $1,000 to add HDR video

RED today said it was raising the price of the Scarlet pro video camera by $1,000 to add in a high dynamic range feature, HDRx. Samsung was said today to be developing the first Universal Flash Storage (UFS) memory cards based on a design developed by the JEDEC Solid State Technology Association. It expects to have the new format ready by the first half of 2011. The first generation of UFS is set to deliver 300Mbps data transfer speeds with future scalability. Microsoft CEO bonus cut for Kin flop, lack of iPad rival

A new Microsoft SEC filing published late Thursday revealed that the company punished its CEO Steve Ballmer for his inability to turn around the company's struggling mobile efforts so far. The proxy statement notes that his total compensation of $1.35 million, including a $670,000 base salary and a matching bonus, was lower than in 2008 due to the "unsuccessful launch of the Kin" and "a loss of market share" for Windows Mobile. The Compensation Committee singled out the absence of a real Windows tablet rival through a need to "take advantage of new form factors."

CEA survey: Americans don't want FM in cell phones

Personally, I'd like to have an FM tuner in my iPhone, but then again, I'm a radio geek, so I guess I'm in the minority. According to a survey from the Consumer Electronics Association, more than half of Americans polled say they don't want an FM tuner in their cell phone. That seems strange to me -- why would you not want that extra functionality? The new iPod nano still has an FM tuner on board, so it must be pretty easy to get one in there. The Apple rumor that keeps on giving -- the touchscreen iMac -- has just been given another shot of monger juice. DigiTimes (who else) cites industry sources who claim again that Sintek Photonics is shipping Apple touchpanels to sample for use in a future 20-plus-inch iMac. Spätestens um vier Uhr morgens soll die jeweils aktuelle Ausgabe über die iPad-App verfügbar sein. Eine einmal heruntergeladene Ausgabe lässt sich ohne Internetverbindung jederzeit öffnen und lesen. One Laptop Per Child project founder Nicholas Negroponte told those at the Mobilize conference today that tablets needed to be more creativity-driven than the iPad. We're still not sure how or why he'll show up, but tonight's episode is about scientist Sheldon trying to put his brain into the body of a robot, so maybe he'll consult the Woz for a little computing insight. HP hires outsider Apotheker as new CEO amid troubles

HP today hired SAP's co-chief Leo Apotheker as its replacement CEO. The change debunks rumors of an internal-only hire and brings in a 20-year veteran from the business app maker as well as a former member of the frequent tech investment group KPCB. Apotheker will come onboard with new board chairman, KPCB Managing Partner Ray Lane, on November 1.
