Stick It for iPad: Beautiful "To-Do" notes application

Filed under: iPadThere's not a lot of apps that make me sit up, take notice and go "yes!" Stick It for iPad is one of those apps. Introduced to me by Mark Peterson, a developer who hangs out in the same #iphonedev channel that I do on freenode, his app ticks a lot of the boxes that I have been looking for for free form note making. Stick It combines sticky notes with a cork board metaphor. You can create new notes, edit their text (and adjust their color, fonts, and so forth), and paste them onto one of five separate boards. This allows you to work with an "immediate" to-do board, a "grocery shopping" board, and so forth.

Flip Slide HD should cost $280, ship April 18

A leaked inventory screen from Best Buy reveals that Cisco may soon release its Flip Slide HD digital camcorder. The leak doesn't actually reference Slide HD, but a digital camcorder designated as the S1240W instead. Google adds on-demand facts to mobile search

Google on Thursday said it has brought its Google Suggest on-demand feature to phones and other handhelds. Like on the desktop, users can start typing in conversions, schedules and other core details into the text box will return answers without having to hit the search button, making queries quicker and easier. Art Lebedev's Reflectius clock tells time with a single laser beam

Art Lebedev managed to impress us with its Segmentus analog clock last month, but it looks like the prolific design firm has now already outdone itself with its new Reflectius clock concept, which uses a single laser beam and sixty rotating mirrors to display the time. That impressive mechanism is matched by the clock's angular exterior (pictured after the break), which Art Lebedev describes as "a complex triangulated surface that reminds of the complicated trajectory the beam of light travels in no time." Real-life iPad: Presenting with an iPad, Keynote, and VGA connector

Filed under: iPadWhen I'm not having fun as a Mac consultant and TUAW editor, I teach community education classes at the Arapahoe Community College in Littleton, Colorado. Last night was the scheduled night for my blogging class, so I decided to see if I could teach the class from my iPad. I had mixed results. Normally, I use my MacBook Air to show my Keynote presentation, then occasionally bring up a web browser to demonstrate some of the finer points of WordPress or some other blogging engine. To move the Keynote presentation to the iPad, I had to sync it over via iTunes. It would be nice to see a way to grab that presentation from Dropbox, where I store it, and just open it in Keynote, but that's not currently possible.

Apple's prohibition of Flash-built apps in iPhone 4.0 related to multitasking

A change in the wording of Apple's developer agreement in iPhone 4.0 appears to block all efforts by third party platform vendors (including Adobe's Flash and Microsoft's Silverlight) to shim or adapt their code to work as a native iPhone app. Rather than being a competitive blow directed at Flash however, it appears the real motivation is to support sophisticated new multitasking features in the new operating system.

OpenFeint creator responds to Game Center threat

Appleís new social gaming platform, Game Center, is already drawing a reaction from game developer Aurora Feint. The company runs OpenFeint, a free online service primarily for hosting leaderboards and achievements. OpenFeint X, launched in February, is a downloadable content platform that enables virtual goods management for free-to-play games without any server operations. While Apple is not known to be interested in DLC, Game Center could in theory threaten Aurora's ability to market its technology.

3G Skype not coming to iPhone for some time?

In spite of a demonstration of Skype running with new features on iPhone 4.0 firmware, 3G support for the VoIP app may not be coming for a while, a Wired article suggests. RIM ordering 8.9-inch screens for BlackBerry tablet?

RIM may be developing a tablet of its own, based on claims by an industry research firm. iPhone Dev Team's MuscleNerd shows off VNC on iPhone OS 4 beta, hints at jailbreak

We can't get a straight answer on the exact jailbroken status of iPhone OS 4, but MuscleNerd of the iPhone Dev Team (and recent iPad hacking fame) is sure hinting heavily. He's got Veency (a VNC server) and Cydia running on iPhone OS 4 on video, something he claims "you'll only find on JB 4.0." Of course, he also has the dev tools at his disposal and all the bugs and loopholes of an early beta, so we can't be exactly sure what's going on. Größter ferngesteuerter zweibeiniger Roboter der Welt ist ein Turm

Filed under: Roboter Gestern wurde am Tokyo Tower der größte zweibeinige Roboter der Welt vorgestellt, also von denen, die auch ferngesteuert werden können. Mit 1,70 Meter überragt er alles, was es bislang gegeben haben soll. Bei genauerer Betrachtung handelt es sich um einen Turm, genau genommen, einer Comic-Variante des bekannten Tsutenkaku Tower aus Osaka, der 1912 nach Vorbild des Eiffelturms errichtet wurde. Microsoft has quietly shown off a new touchscreen implementation that could potentially close the gap between stylus and finger input. Manual Deskterity uses the same multi-touch technology as Surface but with a special infrared stylus and a custom drawing app that recognizes both fingers and the pen at once. Music helps the weary exerciser work harder and, according to a hacker named Steve, the louder the music the more vigorously you work. So, he grabbed a motion sensor and an DIY MP3 player, stuffed them both into a disused French Vanilla Cafe coffehouse beverage drink container (ooh, la la), then wired the works together to pump out the jams louder when you're really burning those calories -- or to get quieter when you stop for a breather. MIT Media Lab's Surround Vision brings virtual reality to a tablet (video)

Sure, 3D adds a little more dimensionality to your couch-bound viewing experience, but it's far from the truly immersive virtual reality people have promising for decades. Surround Vision isn't quite VR either, but it's an interesting way of breaking the perception barrier, allowing a viewer to pan around a scene outside the perspective offered by one display. It's a project by Santiago Alfaro, graduate student at MIT's Media Lab, and relies on a tablet with a magnetic compass. In his demo he filmed video from three perspectives and is able to display the center perspective on the main TV while panning around to the other two with the tablet. Apple veröffentlicht Infos über «WebKit2»

Das WebKit-Team bei Apple hat ein neues API Layer für die Browser-Rendering-Engine angekündigt. In der WebKit-Mailinglist wurde gestern erstmals auf «WebKit2» hingewiesen. Eines der Hauptziele dieses «WebKit2» genannten API Layers sei es, ein sogenanntes «Split Process Model» einzuführen. Vergleichbar mit der Technologie in Googles Chrome (baut ebenfalls auf Apples WebKit auf), erlaubt dieses Modell die Aufteilung einzelner Tabs oder gar Code-Arten als einzelne Prozesse. In Chrome funktioniert das Ganze so, dass wenn der Code einer Webseite in einem Tab ein Absturz verursacht, sind alle anderen Fenster und Tabs des Chrome-Browsers davon nicht betroffen. Der Benutzer kann das betroffene Fenster oder den betroffenen Tab einfach schliessen - alles andere ist davon nicht betroffen. A discovery in the iPhone 4.0 beta firmware may have helped confirm talk of a front-facing camera on a future iPhone model. Using either the iPhone app iStat or the external Activity Monitor development tool shows a reference to an "iChatAgent" process that normally only shows up on regular Macs. Im Internet sind bereits diverse Screenshots von den neuen Funktionen und Möglichkeiten in iPhone OS 4.0 zu finden. 9to5mac.com zum Beispiel zeigt Bilder der Notes- und SMS-App. In den Notizen können neu verschiedene Accounts (via Mail) organisiert werden und die SMS-App hat endlich ein Zeichenzählen. Apple startet iPad App Store

Apple hat einen Tag vor der iPad Premiere in den USA den neuen iPad App Store online gestellt. Neben vielen anderen Programmen ist dort auch iBooks zu haben - Apples eReader für das iPad. Ob und wann die Anwendung auch für iPhone und iPod touch erhältlich sein wird, ist noch nicht bekannt. Vorerst bleibt sie dem iPad vorbehalten und ist momentan nur im U.S.-amerikanischen Store zu haben. Allerdings ist iBooks bereits in mehreren Sprachen lokalisiert (darunter auch in Deutsch), sodass vermutet werden darf, dass das Programm demnächst auch im deutschen App Store verfügbar ist.

Breaking: Apple reports 450K iPads sold to date

Filed under: iPad So much for the sneaky approach. Steve Jobs reporting now at the iPhone OS 4 event that the company has sold 450,000 iPads as of this morning. That's a little lower than estimates, but Apple's still selling plenty. Jobs says they sold 300,000 devices on Saturday, and that Best Buy is experiencing shortages already. iBooks is also doing well, with 250,000 e-books sold on Saturday, and 600,000 books sold in the store total. And the App Store is rocking, too, with 3,500 iPad apps out already, and a whopping 3.5 million downloaded. Pretty amazing for a first week.

Filed under: iPhoneWhile we don't have a lot of detail on this tidbit from today's Apple event, we do know for sure that iBooks, the ebook reader software now available on the iPad platform, will be coming to the iPhone platform with iPhone OS 4.0 this summer. There was also a hint, but no definitive statement from Steve Jobs, that iBooks will also be available for Mac OS X. Of course, having your iBooks library on all of those different devices might make life confusing, but according to The Jobs, there will be wireless syncing of your books between platforms. iPhone OS 4 Secrets: Some early glitches reported by devs

Filed under: iPhoneWell, it's a few months away from release, so fortunately Apple's engineers will have a chance to fix some bugs that are already being reported by an anonymous tipster. Dave installed 4.0 on his iPhone 3GS and noted that the following items don't work properly: Can't change lock screen or home screen wallpapers. Settings gives him the choice and indicates the choice has been made, but nothing changes. Wallpaper can't even be picked on a 3G iTunes doesn't recognize folders and will not perform a backup, displaying an error message that the "backup failed because it was refused by the iPhone." Filed under: SDKUPDATE: We've heard directly from Unity Technologies themselves, and the company's CEO, David Helgason, has been in contact with Apple over the matter. Helgason says that so far Unity has "no indication from Apple that things are going to change." This is consistent with John Gruber's viewpoint on the new iPhone OS 4.0 dev agreement. Gruber originally thought that Unity3D would be a prime candidate for banning under the new rules, but given that Unity3D is, in Gruber's words, "a pre-processor than a cross-compiler," it's nowhere near as certain that Unity will fall on what Gruber calls "the wrong side of the line" per the new dev agreement. Adobe Reader: Hintergrund-Updates starten nächste Woche

Filed under: OS X Es gab auch noch eine weitere Ankündigung von Apple die wir nicht übersehen dürfen. WebKit2 kommt mit einzelnen Prozessen für diverse Browserelemente. Das heisst wenn ein Part abstürzt reisst es nicht gleich den ganzen Browser mit. Chrome hatte das schon vorher gemacht. Aber WebKit2 legt noch einen drauf und stellt diese Dinge auch für andere Programme ausserhalb von Safari zur Verfügung. Damit kann z.B. auch Chrome darauf zugreifen, die WebKit zum rendern der Seiten nutzen, und natürlich diverseste Mobilfunkbrowser. Wie Digitimes berichtet, arbeitet Apple an einer kleineren Version seines Tablet-Rechners iPad. Das Gerät soll zwischen 5 und 7 Zoll groß sein. Die Strategisch wohl wichtigste Neuerung in iPhone OS 4.0, welches Apple am gestrigen Abend der Öffentlichkeit erstmals zeigte, ist «iAd», Apples neue mobile Werbeplattform. Apple steigt mit iAd wie im Vorfeld vermutet in den Werbemarkt ein und bietet damit Google und anderen Konkurrenten Paroli. Apple möchte mit iAd nicht nur ein riesigen Werbemarkt erschliessen (nämlich jenen von mittlerweile 85 Millionen iPhone-OS-Geräte-Besitzern), sondern möchte mit iAd auch die «Art der Werbung» verändern. Apple argumentiert sein Engagement mit iAds damit, dass man die Entwickler unterstützen möchte, durch Werbung in deren meist kostenlosen oder sehr günstig angebotenen Apps etwas Geld zu verdienen. Die Werbeeinbledungen die bisher von verschiedenen Anbietern für in iPhone-Apps angeboten werden, seien laut Apple schlicht ‚schlecht‘ (O-Ton gar: «They suck!»). Eine Developer-Preview von iPhone OS 4 und das zugehörige SDK sind ab sofort für registrierte Entwickler des iPhone Developer Program erhältlich. iPhone OS 4 wird als Softwareupdate für iPhone- und iPod touch-Besitzer «diesen Sommer» erhältlich sein. Einige Funktionen werden nicht auf allen Produkten verfügbar sein. Zum Beispiel setzt Multitasking ein iPhone 3GS oder einen iPod touch der dritten Generation voraus (im September 2009 auf den Markt gebrachte Modelle mit 32GB oder 64GB). Intel bringt neuen Atom D525

Filed under: Chipset Laut Fudzilla bereitet sich Intel gerade darauf vor, einen neuen Doppelkern-Atom für Desktops rauszubringen. Der Atom D525 soll ein 1,8 GHz Doppelkern-Prozessor mit Unterstützung für DDR2 und DDR3 RAM sein und mit 13W den gleichen TDP-Wert haben wie sein Vorgänger Atom D510, den er wohl ersetzen wird. Der D525 wird für das zweite Quartal erwartet und wahrscheinlich von einer einkernigen Variante (D425) begleitet. Zum Preis gibt es noch keine Infos, aber so wie es aussieht wird er wohl in All-In-Ones wie dem Lenovo C200 verbaut werden.

Adobe bringt Flash 10.1 Release Candidate, verspricht viele Verbesserungen

Filed under: Kinetische Energie, Mäuse Die Flip-Flop-Maus, die richtig Toe Mouse heißt, wurde für Menschen mit Behinderungen in den Armen oder Händen entwickelt. Die Idee ist so simpel, dass sie sich durch die Bilder eigentlich von selbst erklärt. Die linke Maustaste durch den großen Zeh zu ersetzen dürfte nicht allzu schwer sein, bei der rechten Taste wird's dann aber kniffeliger, wie der Selbstversuch an den schnell übergestreiften Flip-Flops zeigt. Würden wir gerne in Echt testen, aber leider ist die Fußmaus bisher nur ein Konzept.

Windows 7 SP1 geleakt

Filed under: Windows 7 Microsoft hat ja schon davon gesprochen, dass das Windows 7 SP 1 demnächst kommen soll, nun ist es etwas vorzeitig aufgetaucht, zumindest ein aktueller Build davon. Wie erwartet gibt es keine großen sichtbaren Änderungen, mal abgesehen von der neuen RemoteFX-Funktion im Zusammenspiel mit Windows Server. Der Installationsvorgang ist aber anscheinend sehr viel flotter als bei den Servicepacks zu Vista. Wann Microsoft das Update serviert ist noch unklar, hinter dem Quelle-Link gibt es aber ein paar weitere Screenshots.

Multitasking auf dem iPhone 4: Clever aber nicht für iPhone 3G

Filed under: iPhone Die schlechte Nachricht zuerst. Auf dem iPhone 3G wird es kein Multitasking geben, auch nicht auf dem iPod Touch der zweiten Generation. Die meisten der neuen Funktionen des OS 4.0 Betriebssystems soll es aber geben. Multitasking, gegen das Steve Jobs so lange gewettert hatte wegen Batterieproblemen, funktioniert auch ziemlich clever. Apps die theoretisch da weiterlaufen müssen wo sie gestoppt wurden, also z.B. Spiele, werden gesichert und setzen einfach dort weiter fort wo man war. Andere können über neue APIs im Hintergrund weiterlaufen und z.B. Musik spielen, oder ein VoIP Gespräch weiterlaufen lassen. Und wenn sie nur ganz wenig im Hintergrund zu tun haben, können

Steve Jobs: Apple wollte AdMob kaufen, aber Google war schneller

Filed under: Companies Wir hatten ja schon eine Weile gerätselt warum sich Steve Jobs und Eric Schmidt eigentlich neulich so vertraulich getroffen haben. Eine der Antworten könnte sein: die Ankündigung von iAd heute. Und die Tatsache, dass Steve Jobs gerne AdMob statt Quattro Wireless gekauft hätte, wie er auf der Frage-und-Antwort Runde nach der Vorstellung des neuen iPhone OS 4 zugab. Mit iAd als Konkurrent dürfte es jedenfalls dem Kartellamt in den USA wesentlich schwerer fallen Google beim Kauf von AdMob einen Strich durch die Rechnung zu machen. Aktuell umfasst der App Store 185’000 Applikationen für die iPhone-Plattform - davon sind 50’000 Apps der Kategorie «Spiele» und «Unterhaltung». Dies bedeutete bisher das man sich durch mehrere App-Screens bewegen musste, um die gewünschte App zu finden (oder man benutzt die iPhone-Suche). TSA says all e-readers, netbooks OK in bags

The US Transport Security Administration (TSA) extended its device permissions this week to include e-book readers, netbooks and other small portable electronic devices don't have to be removed from their bags when going through the security gates at airports. BenQ prefers e-reader over tablet, plans color in 2010

Logitech ships Squeezebox Touch

Logitech's long-delayed Squeezebox Touch Wi-Fi home music server is now shipping, though the product page still shows the item as out of stock on Logitech's website. The device has a 4.3-inch touchscreen to help users interface, playing music from their iTunes or MP3 collections or control Internet radio services that include Pandora, Deezer, Rhapsody or Last.fm. Local AM/FM radio is also an option.
