HP Envy 15 review
There are laptops and then there are laptops. The Envy 15 has fallen into that second category ever since we got our hands-on: it's the first PC we've seen that really equals the MacBook Pro's unibody design and it packs a scorching-fast Intel Core i7 processor, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4850 graphics and Beats speakers. On paper, this is easily the hottest laptop we've seen in some time, but has HP really managed to deliver on that promise? Logitech pushes Squeezebox Touch to February
Logitech at mid-day said it has delayed its launch of the Squeezebox Touch until February. The company didn't provide an explanation for the delay, which comes after it had already pushed back the launch of the media streaming hub to December in its original September unveiling.

Calories 2 adds body, weight-tracking features
Danholt4mac has launched Calories 2, an upgrade to its calorie tracking and nutrition program. The second edition has been improved with a variety of features including weight tracking, body analysis data such as fat, water, muscle and bone, and up to eight custom meals with individual timeframe assignments. The software can also retrieve data from the WiThings Wi-Fi body scale, which automatically stores information on a WiThings account.

Samsung outs 8-inch digital frame with LED backlighting
In its home market of Korea, Samsung on Wednesday released an 8-inch digital picture frame, the SPF-800P. The display is LED-backlit and sports a resolution of 800x480. The frame has 2GB of integrated storage space, as well as a microSD memory card reader. The frame has built-in speakers and will play back MP3 audio files and video files in addition to displaying photos.

Apple patent application details universal iPhone / iPod dock
Don't get your hopes up too much just yet, but it looks like you might one day no longer need to detangle a USB cable or fiddle with a plastic dock adapter the next time you want to charge or sync your iPhone or iPod. That's if this this recently revealed patent application for a new type of universal dock from Apple turns into an actual product, at least. The secret to the dock, such as it is, is that the base would be made of an elastic, sponge-like substance that could conform to any device and hold it in place. FCC told to tighten cellphone industry safeguards
The US' Government Accountability Office (GAO) today told the FCC in a report that it needed to more actively monitor complaints from cellphone users. It complimented the FCC for promoting competition but chastised the same regulatory body for doing so at the expense of addressing actual customer complaints. Even as 84 percent of customers in a sample group were very or somewhat satisfied with their service, many have longstanding disagreements that either stem from service problems or more systemic flaws. Dell christens the USFF with OptiPlex 780 mini PC
What's smaller than a small form factor PC? Frankly, a lot. Cells, shrimp, quarters -- you name it. Virtual Bridges releases Verde 3.0 with Mac support
Virtual Bridges has released Verde 3.0, the latest version of its virtual desktop infrastructure utility. The program lets users access the same desktop environment from anywhere a network connection is available. Twitter intros new interface optimized for mobile phones
Twitter has introduced a mobile interface optimized for Android, iPhone, webOS and Nokia S60 browsers. mobile.twitter.comhas been built from scratch using only the Twitter API, and still contains many of the features found on the regular website. The new interface includes Reply, Retweet and Favourite buttons, as well as the ability to see Mentions and Direct Messages. Apple patents propose tamper detection, new motion controls
Two new Apple patent applications have emerged at the US Patent and Trademark Office, directed at the company's handhelds. The first covers an anti-tampering label, inserted inside of a device. On pulling a product apart the label would tear, without being easily replaceable. Technicians would thus be able to tell if someone had opened up electronics on their own, normally invalidating any warranty.

Think Electric returns from the brink, begins production of Think City two-seater
Norway's Think Electric may have managed to attract some backing from GE in early 2008, but it looks to have quickly ran out of cash after that, and was forced to completely shut down its operations about a year ago. Well, kids, dreams do come true -- or production lines can be started again, at least -- and after securing some funding earlier this year, the company has now announced that its two-seat Think City electric vehicle is now back on track for a release by the end of the year. Vodafone dropping HD2 for iPhone?
Vodafone UK today revealed that it already plans to phase out the HTC HD2. Despite only just recently launching the Windows Mobile 6.5 phone, a spokesman told Electricpig that it won't look to restock the phone after its current supplies run out. The British carrier had "massive" demand and has had to catch up on orders but, unusually, has decided to cut sales short.

Radio Shack confirms plans to sell iPhones nationwide
Radio Shack has confirmed plans to expand iPhone distribution across the US in 2010. Although the retailer has already begun selling Apple's handset, availability is currently limited to approximately 250 stores in select areas. The move is expected to help reinforce the company's recent marketing which has focused on mobile phones.

Motorola Milestone's ad campaign less likely to leave you in a bloody heap than Droid's
Motorola's European version of the Droid -- the Milestone -- is on the verge of release in the UK, so it's not surprising to see ads starting to pop up. This is the first we've seen, and we'll say that the approach is interesting. In contrast to the over the top, explosive (literally -- did you see that banana?!) Verizon Droid ads, the Milestone ad is all about information, delivered in a soothing, sophisticated tone. "Intelligence and versatility converge" here, and we have to say we much prefer this approach over the it's a "frickin' robot" one taken by Verizon. OPTi claims NVIDIA skipping royalty payments
Patent holder OPTi this afternoon launched arbitration against NVIDIA in an attempt to garner more royalty payments. It claims that the GeForce creator is breaching a licensing deal struck in 2006 for "pre-snoop" memory technology by declining to pay five quarterly payments worth $3.75 million. It's also allegedly continuing to use the predictive technique and could owe as many 12 total payments.

Vodafone reportedly ditching the HD2 as iPhone launch looms
Here's an interesting one. Vodafone, which is one of the few carriers in the world right now with access to HTC's HD2, is reportedly not going to stock the handset any longer once its current supply evaporates. The reason? Early Chrome Mac extensions due by December 12th
An early implementation of extensions for the Mac version of Chrome should return by the end of the week, says Google. While extensions were fully enabled on Tuesday for Windows users, the technology has remained in a primitive form on Macs. Squeezebox Touch delayed until February: Bah, Humbug!
Despite being proudly introduced to the world in early September, it seems as if Logitech's Squeezebox Touch is still fighting the good fight on its way to mass production. Microsoft licenses out exFAT file system
Microsoft today said it would license its exFAT file system to third parties to spread its use in computers and portable devices. The technology is already found in the SDXC card format but will now be available in a flexible system that depends on the device. Simple devices like cameras and photo frames will involve a pay-once $300,000 fee, while more advanced devices like computers and smartphones will pay a royalty for every unit sold.

Google Mobile app updates with new settings, link functions
Google has released an updated version of its Google Mobile application for the iPhone and iPod touch. The software attempts to simplify search, for instance allowing handhelds with microphones to run voice-based queries. New in the app is the ability to see more search results at once, and launch webpages without quitting to Safari.

iTunes adds free 14-track holiday sampler
Perhaps to compete with Amazon's excellent free Holiday Sampler, Apple is doing one of their own. It includes tracks from artists such as Amy Grant, David Archuleta, Rascal Flatts, Weezer, Toby Keith, Barry Manilow (yay!), Sarah McLachlan, and more.

Foxconn already building next-generation iPhone?
A long-time Apple manufacturing partner, Foxconn, has already received an order to begin building the next-generation iPhone, says Mobile Review editor Eldar Murtazin. While it is not known if Foxconn has begun the production process, the company could require a lengthy headstart to meet demand. Britische Regierung kürzt IT-Budget um 500 Millionen Pfund
Der britische Schatzkanzler Alistair Darling hat das Parlament informiert, dass das von der Regierung beschlossene Sparpaket auch die IT betrifft. 500 Millionen Pfund (550 Millionen Euro) jährlich wollen die Briten "durch verringerte Ausgaben im IT-Bereich" einsparen. Insgesamt hat die Regierung ihren Haushalt um 5 Milliarden Pfund gekürzt - die IT soll also rund zehn Prozent beitragen.

China Unicom meldet 100.000 verkaufte iPhones

Apple impacted by LCD screen price-fixing ring, DOJ confirms
Apple products introduced during the September 2001-December 2006 time-frame may have been impacted by an LCD vendor’s attempt to illegally “price fix” its screens.
Chi Mei Optoelectronics, a Taiwanese maker of TFT-LCDs (thin-film transistor-liquid crystal displays), has agreed to plead guilty and pay $220 million in fines for its role in an international conspiracy to fix LCD prices, the US Department of Justice has confirmed (as reported by Computerworld).
The company is accused of participating in a conspiracy to fix LCD prices between September 2001 and December 2006, the DOJ said in a press release. The firm has agreed to cooperate with the investigation.

Seit heute ab 11 Uhr können internationalisierte Domänennamen (IDNs) bei der Vergabestelle EURid registriert werden. Diese dürfen auch Akzentbuchstaben, Umlaute und Zeichen aus Sprachen enthalten, die nicht das lateinische Alphabet verwenden. ASUS is building a tablet
If there is any PC manufacturer that has been even a little bit creative over the past decade, it is ASUS. They've not only invented the NetBook (which is responsible for most PC growth lately) but also more outlandish things like the 'computer in a keyboard' (pictured below).
Today Digitimes informs us that they're entering the tablet game with a
..new device named Eee Pad featuring a 4- to 7-inch panel, and which will offer a combination of tablet PC and MID functions.
The inspiration for this device? The non-existent Apple tablet. Or, at least the rumors of such a device.
Current details of the Eee Pad suggest the product has been inspired by the rumors of Apple's planned tablet device, the sources commented.

Dell's 9.99mm thin Adamo XPS wasn't supposed to ship to even the earliest orderers until December 22nd, but it seems as if a minor Christmas miracle has happened over at Adam's office. Ciena macht im vierten Quartal 26,7 Millionen Dollar Verlust
Ciena hat im vierten Quartal seines Geschäftsjahres 2008/2009 (bis 31. Oktober) erneut rote Zahlen geschrieben. Nach einem Verlust von 25,4 Millionen Dollar im vergangenen Jahr verzeichnete der Netzwerkausrüster ein Minus von 26,7 Millionen Dollar. WiGig provides early details of 7Gbps wireless spec
The WiGig Alliance on Thursday said it had completed the first specifcation for its 60GHz wireless technology. The self-titled WiGig format will use the ultra-dense format to transmit data at speeds well above Wi-Fi and beyond even the initial proposal, ranging between 1Gbps and 7Gbps. Consequently, it's 10-70 times faster than Wi-Fi and should permit features that aren't practical with current technology, such as providing DisplayPort, HDMI or even PCI Express data over the wireless link.

China Unicom claims 100,000 iPhones; Tesco launch on Monday
China Unicom has sold over 100,000 iPhones since it first launched the device on October 30th, the carrier now says. While sales have been slower than in some neighbouring countries, namely South Korea, the new figure suggests that sales have not been as poor as has generally been assumed. Just 5,000 iPhones were sold on launch weekend, and an official auction site sold less than a handful in a space of two weeks.

iPhone: Good News from China
Apple is most likely a bit more pleased by the new figures after the very bad results from the iPhone launch day in China. It seems that China Unicom managed to sell 100,000 units over the first 40 days. Of course if we consider the potential number of customers, 100,000 units is a drop in the ocean, even though not every one can afford/make use of it. If we compare with other launch events outside USA, Orange reached 100,000 units sold within few days, same thing in Germany. In addition the model available from China Unicom has the Wi-Fi disabled and is more expensive, than the iPhone model available from the grey market in China.

Nikon this morning upgraded one of its more important super telephoto offerings and added a new teleconverter. The AF-S 300mm f2.8G ED VR II upgrades to Nikon's second-generation image stabilization and can provide a blur-free image four shutter stops lower than would be possible without any compensation. ASUS prepping Eee Pad inspired by Apple tablet?
ASUS is in the early stages of developing a tablet device partly in response to Apple's rumored tablet, a supposed leak claimed Thursday. To be called the Eee Pad, it would actually be significantly smaller than the as yet unconfirmed Apple device and would have a screen between just 4 inches and 7 inches and fit into the MID category. Onkyo verbessert den Doppelscreen-Laptop von Kohjinsa deutlich

Onkyo hat den Doppelscreen-Computer von Kohjinsha ins Portfolio aufgenommen und sogra noch ein bisschen verbessert. Zwei Displays mit je 10,1" sitzen auf dem Mini-Rechner, allerdings mit besserer Auflösung als im Original. 1366x768p. Yeah. Der Prozessor allerdings ist mit dem 1,6GHz Athlon Neo MV-40 derselbe wie beim Original. Die weiteren Specs: ATI Radeon HD 3200, 802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, und 3 x USB. Auch beim Speicher ist Onkyo großzügiger: Die Basis-Konfiguration ist 2GB, erweiterbar ist der Rechner auf 4GB. Dazu kommt eine 320GB-Festplatte, Ethernet und Windows 7 Home Premium als OS. 900 Dolar für die Basisversion muss man hinlegen. Wir finden das nicht unattraktiv.

Fennec 1.0 - mobiler Firefox kommt noch dieses Jahr
Noch in diesem Jahr ist die Veröffentlichung von Fennec 1.0 geplant, der mobilen Version von Firefox. In der kommenden Woche erscheint zunächst ein Release Candidate. Apanda A60 heißt der Kollege, hat einen 600MHz-Prozessor, eine 5-Megapixel-Kamera, 256MB RAM, genauso viel ROM, WiFI, funkt GSM und WCDMA und im Moment zumindest Android 1.6. Bislang war das iPhone 3GS in Deutschland bekanntlich fast ausschließlich beim Exklusivdistri T-Mobile oder verschiedenen Importeuren erhältlich. Bereits vor einiger Zeit hat auch die E-Plus-Tochter Simyo den Vertrieb von SIMlock-freien iPhones über den sog. Retailkeyshop aufgenommen, der von Advance Systems in Verl betrieben wird. Lagen die Preise zunächst 'jenseits von Gut und Böse' - 16 GB: 800 Euro, 32 GB: 900 Euro -, so sieht das nach der jüngsten Preissenkung schon etwas freundlicher aus - 16 GB 700 Euro, 32 GB: 800 Euro. Empfehlenswert ist das aber immer noch nur für Wenigtelefonierer, die nur selten die Stärken des iPhone - mobiler Internetzugang - ausnutzen wollen und sich ansonsten nur im Design-Glanze ihres iPhones sonnen wollen. Gleich zwei namhafte Neuerscheinungen für Touch-Piloten gibt es zu vermelden: Namco bringt den Flugsimulator Ace Combat Xi Skies of Incursion für 5,99 Euro, die ersten Bewertungen sind allerdings recht gemischt. Aldi Talk: Preissenkung bei Telefonaten und SMS

Seit zwei Tagen steht die Betaversion von Chrome für den Mac zur Verfügung. Anlass genug, die unter OS X laufenden Browser einem Geschwindigkeitsvergleich zu unterziehen und zu messen, welches Produkt im Benchmarktest am besten abschneidet. Analyst: Apple-Tablet erscheint im Frühjahr 2010 für 1000 Dollar
Yair Reiner, Analyst bei Sal. Oppenheim, rechnet damit, dass Apple im März oder April 2010 einen Tablet-Rechner auf den Markt bringen wird. First Droid Eris update makes the slow OTA rollout starting tonight

Study finds Americans consume 34 gigabytes of information per day
Well, it's a good thing life comes with an unlimited data plan, as a recent study conducted by the University of California, San Diego has found that Americans consume plenty of gigabytes in the average day. Thirty-four gigabytes, to be specific, which translates to a grand total of of 3.6 zettabytes of information consumed by American households in 2008 (or 3.6 billion trillion bytes). Nokia to close US retail stores
Nokia today confirmed that it would shutter its two US stores in addition to its previously disclosed plans to close its London shop. The Chicago and New York City locations will cease running in early 2010 and are closing as the company believes it can better invest its money into sales through carriers or online sales. It has also tried to positively spin the closures by arguing that they've helped achieve the goal of improving Nokia's brand awareness in the US market.
