JooJoo tablet capable of 'iPhone level' gaming
Fusion Garage chief Chandrasekhar Rathakrishnan in an interview published today has provided details of how the Joojoo tablet's performance as well as its future plans. The company lead confirms that the Atom-based tablet carries 1GB of RAM but also has a dedicated graphics processor instrumental to its 1080p Flash playback as well as better 3D. Rathakrishnan claims to Engadget that the Joojoo has enough 3D performance to support 'at least iPhone level' games.

Apple files patent for clunky looking tablet (a month ago)
You know what is interesting about this tablet from a November 2009 Apple patent application (besides the fact it looks like it is from 2003 - or a next gen nano?)? Give up? Head south for the answer
One of the patent applicants for Apple is a one Dr. Carlin Vieri. He's no longer with Apple. He happens to be the VP of Engineering for Pixel Qi right now. Just in case you didn't think there was enough of a connection already.

Sprint says Android 2.0 coming to Hero and Moment first half of next year
In the wake of Verizon's Droid Eris update announcement, Sprint couldn't very well rest on its laurels and let the world go by while its Android babies grow stale on version 1.5, could it? Indeed, the company has announced today (via Twitter, of all things) that it'll be bringing Android 2.0 to the table for its HTC Hero and Samsung Moment in the first half of 2010. Naturally, we wish they could tighten that up to the first quarter (or heck, this month, for that matter), but as far as we can tell, HTC isn't yet done prepping Sense for 2.0 so they're probably in a holding pattern there. SwimMan launches waterproofed third-gen iPod shuffle
SwimMan has launched a new waterproofed iPod shuffle, and is offering a combo deal for the holidays. The Shuffle is a 2GB, third-generation model waterproofed from the inside out, and so does not require special external casing. It can be submerged to 25 feet, although the waterproofing process does disable the on-off and shuffle buttons, which can be substituted for with the headset and the center-wheel button. The other buttons remain functional, but tend to be stiffer.

WD format provides "free" 11% extra storage
Western Digital says it has developed a technique that provides more usable space out of a given hard drive capacity. Known as Advanced Format, it reduces the amount of overhead for each data sector by pooling together information. Instead of requiring a single Sync/DAM header and ECC (error correction) block for each sector, it would create much larger 4KB sectors that use one set of each header.

ITG xpPhone shown off in green, and yes, you can have a different color
This isn't the first time we've seen what would appear to be an xpPhone dummy in the wild paired with a mocked-up display; that honor would go to a Computex debut earlier this year. Logic3, USBfever release USB-powered speakers
Logic3 and USBfever have each launched new speaker systems for notebooks and MP3 players: the ScreenBeat USB and the Sonar Speaker. The aluminum, cylinder-shaped ScreenBeat speaker produces 3W of RMS output. While specifically designed for notebooks, the speaker is capable of working with any media device with a USB port, and is powered by the device it is plugged into. A compact design is meant to sit close to the front or sides of a computer.

iPhone taking control away from AT&T, says research group
The iPhone is effectively stealing control of subscribers away from AT&T, says iSuppli. The research group notes that as cellphone carriers have grown, they have been able to depend less and less on money from voice. As a result they have increasingly turned towards data, selling not only bandwidth but services such as games, ringtones and video.

Western Digital 'advanced format' promises slight boost in usable space
Sure, you may have been able to double your hard drive's storage space with DriveSpace back in the day, but it looks like Western Digital has now come up with a new, more foolproof way to eek out a few more gigabytes from its drives. Dubbed 'advanced format,' the company's new partitioning method promises to do away with each individual sector having its own Sync/DAM header and ECC, and instead move to larger, 4k physical sectors. As you can see in the helpful illustration above, that shift would also actually increase the size of the ECC, but WD says the net gain in usable storage space should still be between seven and eleven percent (which would certainly be welcome when we're talking about 1TB or 2TB drives). Moto Milestone's UK launch sells out in 3 hours
UK retailer eXpansys today revealed that the Motorola Milestone's UK debut sold out in less than three hours. The exclusive sales outlet for the phone in the country said it listed the phone at 10AM on Thursday but had to label it as out of stock just 2.5 hours later. The rate is an all-time company record and even outpaced Apple's iPhone.

Dell having trouble delivering holiday orders?
Dell may be having trouble fulfilling orders due to inherent problems with its delivery system, according to multiple anecdotal reports. Those who've ordered say their orders have been delayed as many as four times and in many cases have been pushed back to January. When asked, Dell regularly claims that it's waiting on one or more parts before it can finish building the system and claims that there are a lot of orders due to the holidays.

Call it a pent-up demand for WVGA Android devices, call it Droid jealousy, call it an unnatural love for the sweet, doughy goodness of a just-baked Eclair -- but whatever it is, early indications suggest that the British love their Milestones. Seagate 7mm drive to top out at 250GB?
Seagate's promised 7mm notebook hard drive will be relatively limited in capacity if leaked details prove accurate. To be called the Momentus Thin, the line will purportedly top out at 250GB and have just one step down, a 160GB model, for those concerned about cost. The disks should nonetheless still spin at the same 5,400RPM as typical notebook drives measuring 9.5mm or 12mm tall.

Apple rumored to be buying VoIP provider
Apple may be ready to buy VoIP company iCall, claims a source in contact with Silicon Alley Insider. In addition to a featured Windows client, iCall also provides VoIP services through an iPhone app and a limited web client. TechCrunch sues Fusion Garage over the Joojoo -- we break it down
Okay, well here we go. Michael Arrington says he filed a lawsuit yesterday against Fusion Garage over the CrunchPad / Joojoo situation, and he's helpfully provided a copy of the complaint, which alleges false advertising, breach of fiduciary duty, misappropriation of business ideas, fraud, and unlawful business practices. You'll notice that list doesn't include any breach of contract or intellectual property claims -- a fair departure from what Michael said he'd be suing over, but not entirely surprising since it doesn't seem like there was any contract here at all. Microsoft denies blocking Apple products from events
Microsoft is not banning Apple products from its press events, a company spokesperson says. At a recent Windows Mobile 6.5 event in Munich, Germany, one Microsoft representative is alleged to have criticized journalists for talking about owning an iPhone. The one incident led to reports that Microsoft had banned the use or mention of Apple products at official events.

Analyst: Microsoft should exit phone business
Microsoft ought to cut its losses and drop Windows Mobile and Zune, Strategic News Service analyst and founder Mark Anderson said late Friday. He argues that, apart from the Xbox 360, the Windows developer's consumer electronics businesses have largely flopped and that it lacks a fundamental understanding of how these work. Apple, Google and most Asian companies have a far better understanding and are likely to still dominate the field.

Apple countersues Nokia
You almost knew this had to happen. Nokia sued Apple over claims that it violated their 3G product patents in October. Now Apple's army of lawyers have focussed their ICBMs at the telecom giant in a battle which will raise both companies' overhead costs and likely end in a lengthy court battle and cash settlement.
Apple posted this short blurb on their website today, showing this battle wasn't only going to be fought in court. It will be fought over public opinion.:

Concerned for a long-suffering Pandora pre-orderer in you life? Well, you might want to keep them away from sharp knives and their dormant SD card full of rare ROMs for the next few weeks. Fake iPod nano macht nur fast alles richtig, dafür grenzbillig

Was soll man sagen, besser kann man ein iPod nano wohl nicht mehr kopieren, sogar das USB-Kabel steht dem Original in nichts nach. Bei Installations-CDs müssen wir aber tief durchatmen und den Kopf schütteln. Da hätte das Kopieren besser laufen müssen. Aber immerhin gibt es wie beim 5G auch eine Kamera und bei einem Preis von umgerechnet 23 Euro natürlich der Preisbrecher schlechthin.

Live-Konzerte aufnehmen: Titelsprung dank Titelmarker
Auch diesmal beschäftigt sich Andreas mit GarageBand. Er zeigt in seinem Screencast, wie man aus dem Fernsehen aufgenommene Konzertmitschnitte mit Titelmarkern versieht. Als Beispiel dienen ihm die aufgenommenen Livekonzerte, die zum Jahreswechsel auf 3Sat flimmern. Mit ein wenig Handarbeit und der, im Vorfeld veröffentlichten Songliste, erstellt er eine Aufnahme, in der er einzelne Titel direkt anspringen kann. WIND cleared to be Canada's 4th national carrier
The Canadian government today cleared Globalive to run what should be the country's fourth national carrier. After initially letting the CRTC reject Globalive's WIND service due to concerns about foreign ownership, Industry Minister Tony Clement now says the results have been overturned as it's been decided that the foreign investment in the company doesn't constitute "in fact" control that would violate Canadian ownership laws. The decision takes effect immediately and clears WIND to run as soon as it's ready.

Now Dell plans its own tablet...
Dell has begun producing its own smartphones, now fresh reports claim the company’s set to introduce its own tablet device.
The reported 5-inch tablet will be based on Google’s Android OS and may be announced at next month’s CES event in Las Vegas, at least that’s what PocketLint is claiming.
The system will allow users to surf the Web from a handheld device bigger than a touchscreen smartphone, but smaller than a standard netbook.
Dell refused to confirm or deny the PocketLint report, telling the site: "Dell continually develops and tests new products that extend the mobile experience. We have not made any product announcements and do not comment on speculation, rumour, or unannounced products."

iPhone users suffering 'Stockholm Syndrome', analyst firm reckons
iPhone users are suffering from delusion akin to Stockholm Syndrome, says Strand Consulting in a weird little slice of research released this morning by this particular team of generally anti-iPhone analysts.
The note, titled, “How will psychologists describe the iPhone syndrome in the future?” seems one of the most unusual slices of writing we’ve come across.
Here’s how it begins: “It is no secret that there has been a great deal of hype surrounding the iPhone and it is also no secret that Apple probably has the most loyal and fantastic customers in the world.”

Intel forks over the $1.25 billion settlement to AMD, apparently had it 'just laying around'
Remember that time you owed your buddy for the take out and then you found $20 in the couch? This is kind of like that. Except instead of "take out" we're talking "accusations of anticompetitive practices and stolen IP," and instead of "$20" we're referring to the $1.25 billion check that Intel just shot into the arm of AMD, as per agreement. Intel certainly isn't out of the woods yet with this anticompetitive stuff, but with the biggest CPU monkey off its back and some fancy patent cross-licensing between the companies, we should hopefully see the benefits of this in better and faster chips from both chip giants in the somewhat distant future.

App Store approval process becoming less stringent?
Apple may be adopting a more tolerant approach to flaws in submitted iPhone apps, one developer's experience suggests. Vimov notes that it recently submitted an update for iSimulate, an app which makes multi-touch and accelerometer commands possible within the Mac iPhone simulator. Palm may have sold 670,000 phones in fall
Palm may have fared better than expected in its crucial fall quarter, according to an investment note from Kaufman Brothers. Studie: Paid-Content? Lieber nicht
Springer und DuMont basteln an einer Paid-Content-Plattform für Verlage - doch dieser Weg, neue Erlösquellen zu generieren, wird kein leichter sein: Lediglich 9 Prozent der deutschen Surfer (internationaler Durchschnitt: 13 Prozent) sind laut einer internationalen Studie bereit für Webcontent zu bezahlen. Davon würden ganze 1 Prozent akzeptieren, dass Inhalte kostenpflichtig sind und gleichzeitig Werbung geschaltet wird. 84 Prozent aller deutschen Surfer wollen dagegen weiterhin kostenlosen Zugang zu Webinhalten. Mit 47 Prozent überdurchschnittlich hoch ist auch der Anteil derer, die der Meinung sind, dass Inhalte im Web komplett kosten- und werbefrei sein sollten. Zu diesem Ergebnis kommt die internationale Studie "Internetnutzung", die GfK Custom Research und der GfK Verein im Auftrag von "The Wall Street Journal Europe" in 16 europäischen Ländern und in den USA durchgeführt haben. Die Zahlungsbereitschaft mobiler Surfer wurde nicht extra abgefragt.

iPhone users are suffering from delusion akin to Stockholm Syndrome, says Strand Consulting in a weird little slice of research released this morning by this particular team of generally anti-iPhone analysts.
The note, titled, “How will psychologists describe the iPhone syndrome in the future?” seems one of the most unusual slices of writing we’ve come across.
Here’s how it begins: “It is no secret that there has been a great deal of hype surrounding the iPhone and it is also no secret that Apple probably has the most loyal and fantastic customers in the world.”

Gestern Donnerstag ging im Apple Retail Store Zürich an der Bahnhofstrasse das erste Live-Konzert über die Bühne. Mit einer unplugged Performance das Publikum überzeugen konnte die Schweizer Newcomer-Band «The Raveners». Nokia's Ovi Store for mobile apps has been trounced by Apple's App Store, the former's media group product lead George Linardos admitted on Thursday. Created as rival to the iPhone's portal, Ovi is now acknowledged as having been 'outpaced' by the App Store as its tendency to crash, its slow speed and its lack of features to match Apple's have left it behind. Now Dell plans its own tablet...
Dell has begun producing its own smartphones, now fresh reports claim the company’s set to introduce its own tablet device.
The reported 5-inch tablet will be based on Google’s Android OS and may be announced at next month’s CES event in Las Vegas, at least that’s what PocketLint is claiming.
The system will allow users to surf the Web from a handheld device bigger than a touchscreen smartphone, but smaller than a standard netbook.
Dell refused to confirm or deny the PocketLint report, telling the site: "Dell continually develops and tests new products that extend the mobile experience. We have not made any product announcements and do not comment on speculation, rumour, or unannounced products."

Entwickelt und gebaut von Aaron Becker und Robert Sandheinrich von der University of Illinois kann er zum Beispiel zwei Bälle gleichzeitig in die Luft heben und sie dann in verschiedene Kisten verfrachten, präzise in ein kleines Loch schiessen, oder durch einen komplexen Hindernisparcours navigieren. ASUS is building a tablet
If there is any PC manufacturer that has been even a little bit creative over the past decade, it is ASUS. They've not only invented the NetBook (which is responsible for most PC growth lately) but also more outlandish things like the 'computer in a keyboard' (pictured below).
Today Digitimes informs us that they're entering the tablet game with a
..new device named Eee Pad featuring a 4- to 7-inch panel, and which will offer a combination of tablet PC and MID functions.
The inspiration for this device? The non-existent Apple tablet. Or, at least the rumors of such a device.
Current details of the Eee Pad suggest the product has been inspired by the rumors of Apple's planned tablet device, the sources commented.

Apple impacted by LCD screen price-fixing ring, DOJ confirms
Apple products introduced during the September 2001-December 2006 time-frame may have been impacted by an LCD vendor’s attempt to illegally “price fix” its screens.
Chi Mei Optoelectronics, a Taiwanese maker of TFT-LCDs (thin-film transistor-liquid crystal displays), has agreed to plead guilty and pay $220 million in fines for its role in an international conspiracy to fix LCD prices, the US Department of Justice has confirmed (as reported by Computerworld).
The company is accused of participating in a conspiracy to fix LCD prices between September 2001 and December 2006, the DOJ said in a press release. The firm has agreed to cooperate with the investigation.

Microsoft startet Lizenzprogramm für Flash-Dateisystem exFAT
Microsoft hat damit begonnen, sein Flash-Dateisystem Extended File Allocation Table (exFAT) an andere Unternehmen zu lizenzieren. exFAT ist eine Erweiterung des FAT-Dateisystems, die größere Kapazitäten unterstützt. Kommt iTunes Store im Webbrowser?
Apple plant angeblich grundlegende Änderungen im iTunes Store. Das Wall Street Journal zitiert Berichte aus Unternehmenskreisen, nach denen es zukünftig auch möglich sein soll, direkt aus dem Webbrowser bei iTunes einzukaufen. Bislang ist der Zugriff auf den iTunes Store bekanntlich nur aus der iTunes-Software heraus möglich.
Als ersten Schritt in diese Richtung darf man zweifellos die kürzlich eingeführte iTunes-Vorschau im Webbrowser sehen. Der nächste Schritt zum Kauf eines Songs direkt aus dem Webbrowser heraus sollte technisch keine all zu große Herausforderung für Apple sein.

Intel pays up $1.25 billion to AMD
AMD on Thursday announced that it has received the $1.25 billion settlement payment from Intel. The payment satisfies the monetary terms of the agreement over various antitrust and patent disputes. Chevy Volt to get iPhone, BlackBerry apps
They may not let you actually drive the car James Bond-style, but it looks like there will be some apps for the iPhone and BlackBerry launching alongside the Chevy Volt, with apps for other devices apparently also a possibility. WebGL 3D standard gets draft spec
The Khronos Group today published the draft specification for WebGL, its universal standard for accelerated 3D graphics inside web browsers. The initial format takes advantage of HTML5's canvas support to draw OpenGL ES 2.0-level graphics without having to use a plugin. Besides simplifying the use of modern 3D hardware, it lets 3D interact more closely with web pages themselves and supports tasks like scripting to automate events or even test graphics before they're put into finished code.
