Ravensword für iPhone abgewiesen - Apple stellt Unity-Engine unter Generalverdacht
Wie uns Publisher Chillingo heute mitteilte, ist das von vielen erwartete Action-Rollenspiel Ravensword von Apple abgelehnt worden. Anders als sonst hat Apple jedoch in diesem Fall eindeutige Gründe, die sie dazu anhalten, das Spiel nicht zuzulassen. Grund dafür sind zwei interne Programmaufrufe (API-Calls) der verwendeten Unity-Engine.

Droid topping 250,000 users in one week?
A new set of extrapolated data from location network developer uLocate suggests that active users of the Droid may have more than doubled in the first week of sales. Third-party estimates indicated that Verizon may have only sold 100,000 launch units, but uLocate says it will have detected about 25,000 new Droids on its network by Saturday. As uLocate's information usually represents about 10 percent of the actual user base of a phone when it's new, the figure would translate to about 250,000 total Droid users.

fixed normal/slower/faster audio podcast playback

HP dm3t review
We're really into the new influx of inexpensive CULV-based laptops that's arrived with Windows 7, and just like the ASUS UL80Vt, we knew we had to check out the starts-at-$599 HP dm3t the second we saw the first leak. In many ways, it's the perfect throw-it-in-a-bag-and-go portable on paper, with a sleek and rigid case design, a 1.3GHz Intel SU7300 Core 2 Duo processor, and a 13.3-inch screen, but there's a big difference between loving a machine's spec sheets and reviews and loving it in real life, so we spent a couple days playing with a spec'd-up $819 model -- read on for our impressions.

News: Gartner: Apple grabs 17% of smartphone market in Q3
According to the latest data from research firm Gartner, Apple accounted for 17% of worldwide smartphone sales in the third quarter. Apple’s market share trailed only that of BlackBerry maker RIM, with nearly 21%, and Nokia, with 39.3%—an all-time low for the Finnish company. News: Apple: 40-50 new stores coming in 2010
Apple has said that it plans to open between 40 and 50 new stores in 2010, with more than half those located outside the United States in countries including Canada, Australia, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, France and China. Nokia rumored to be eyeing Palm buy yet again
We've been around this rumor pretty much since Palm started looking competitive again, so take it for what you will -- but a bunch of fat cats down on Wall Street have been going ape today over renewed "chatter" that Nokia might be taking an interest in acquiring Palm. Palm's share prices are up well over 5 percent on the day, though we wouldn't be the least bit surprised if there was some behind-the-scenes manipulation going on here -- an acquisition would make less sense now than ever with suitors on the hook for $2 billion or more, a hefty sum even for a giant like Nokia, never mind the fact that they've still got two smartphone platforms of their own in the mix. Verizon to test passing on RIAA notices
The RIAA confirmed late Thursday that Verizon has agreed to test notices of alleged copyright infringement to its subscribers. Each notice, which is relayed to Verizon first, will alert downloaders that they're believed to have pirated material and that the act is illegal. The warnings should already be enroute to customers, but it's unknown when the trial would stop.

Firefox passes 25% of marketshare. One in four web hits now on Firefox
As the Firefox browser prepares to celebrate its 5th birthday, NetApplications reveals quite an accomplishment for the Open Source Mozilla foundation. Developer quits iPhone over App Store rejections
Software developer Rogue Amoeba has claimed plans to quit iPhone development, citing what it calls the "broken" nature of the App Store approval process. In July the company submitted a bugfix for Airfoil Speakers Touch (AST), an app streaming audio from computers running the Airfoil desktop client. Amoeba complains that the corrected version has only just become available, as a result of three rejections which ultimate forced it to remove existing functionality.

HTC expects holiday sales to drop 15%
HTC this week warned that it should see a significant drop in its fall sales. The company expects its fall sales to sink 15 percent compared to the same season a year ago. It portrays the results as mixed due to strong US sales of Android phones, such as the Hero, being offset by a lack of presence in Europe.

ION Cube case mod wins NVIDIA design contest
We haven't seen a ton of ION-based case mods just yet, but it looks like NVIDIA itself has kick started the scene in a pretty big way with a case mod design contest, and it's now crowned a winner. Bulit by Bill Owen of Mnpctech.com, the so-called ION Cube draws on a few fairly obvious influences, and makes use of a combination of CNC milled sheets of aluminum and laser cut pieces of acrylic which, combined with the rest of the build, apparently took over a hundred hours to complete. Intel takes on antitrust expert as general counsel
Intel today addressed its ongoing legal troubles with word that it has hired Douglas Melamed as both its new senior VP and general counsel. The new executive has over 30 years of experience with antitrust and regulatory issues both in private business as well as five years of service in the US Department of Justice through two assistant attorney general positions. Google makes Gizmo5 acquisition official, drops few details
This one wasn't exactly the best kept secret of the week, but Google has now come out and officially announced that it has acquired VoIP company Gizmo5, and that Gizmo5's engineers will expectedly be joining the Google Voice team. This being Google, however, it isn't saying much more than that it's looking forward to "working together to bringing more useful features to Google Voice," although that's no doubt more than enough to make the folks at Skype have a slightly less relaxing weekend. ioSafe outs 2TB fireproof, waterproof external hard drive

Samsung to ship 100m touch phones next year?
Samsung will make one of the largest pushes into touchscreen phones of any one company, according to a note from Shinhan Investment. The Korean company should step up its shipments of the devices from an estimated 57 million this year to at least 100 million in 2010. AT&T issues customer memo attacking Verizon ads
AT&T has turned to direct communication in order to discourage customers from believing recent Verizon TV ads. The carrier has issued a new memo, claiming the ads are "so blatantly false and misleading" that it has to "set the record straight" about data coverage. It notes for instance that roughly 233 million Americans should have access to AT&T 3G, while 301 million can fall back to EDGE (2.5G) service, and 303 million have at least GPRS.

Analyst 'confirms' BlackBerry touch slider, new browsers
RIM's rumored BlackBerry 9900 and WebKit-based browser gained corroborating evidence today with a research note from Kaufman Bros. analyst Shaw Wu. He points to contacts in the industry and parts suppliers who say the touchscreen slider phone is in development and resembles a cross between the Storm2 and one of RIM's non-touch QWERTY devices. iTunes Preview removes annoyances in shared Store links
Without announcement, Apple this week launched iTunes Preview, a new feature of the iTunes Store. The option solves a problem created through the ability to share links to store content. Mac Chrome beta coming in early December

There are a lot of improvements we here at Engadget like to see in netbooks -- more SSD storage, higher-resolution screens, less flimsy construction -- but not a one of us put "greater aerodynamic lift" anywhere on our list. ICD shows extra-large tablet with Android, Tegra
Newcomer ICD late yesterday confirmed first details of a tablet design that promises to be one of the first in a new category of large media devices. Previously teased by NVIDIA's CEO, the Vega has a large 15.6-inch, 1366x768 resistive touchscreen and will have the performance to drive it through an NVIDIA Tegra chipset. Manche tun das sogar schon auf ihre Weise, aber warum ausgerechnet die NASA mit ihrem ersten iPhone App einen Scanner für Gaskonzentationen für Chlor, Ammonium und Methan herstellt, der mit einem externen Plugin-Sensor mit 16 Nanosensoren arbeitet, und warum es vor allem für das iPhone entwickelt wurde, ist uns bislang noch schleierhaft. Chrome OS to come within a week?
Techcrunch is reporting that the first releases of ChromeOS, the "mostly just a browser running on Linux OS" from Google is set to launch within a week. The major work continues to be driver support which spreads out among PC makers' many components and manufacturers. The new OS will initially target netbooks with a particular aim to give Windows XP users something besides a crippled, expensive Windows 7 to upgrade.
From there, however, Chrome should would on just about any Intel hardware including Macs. You'll likely be able to test Chrome on Parallels or VMWare on Mac when it is released.

Dell officially enters smartphones with Mini 3
Dell today formally entered the smartphone race by launching the Mini 3. The full-touchscreen phone depends on a customized version of Android and will have different features based on the region. While most details aren't available, the China Mobile version will be limited to EDGE data but use the government-supported OPhone interface and app store. Other countries should get localized 3G and should also have Wi-Fi as well.

Intel's mobile Core i5, Core i3 get early specs
Intel plans to fill out the low- to mid-range of its notebook processor range when it launches its Arrandale-based 32 nanometer models early next year, a roadmap leak explains on Friday. The mobile Core i5 line should be headed by two dual-core models, the 2.4GHz i5-520M and 2.26GHz i5-430M, as of early January 2010. Like their desktop counterparts, they won't support Hyperthreading but will support Turbo Boost and should clock up to as high as 2.93GHz and 2.53GHz respectively when they can afford to shut down one core.

At this point, there have been so many Sonic games on so many different platforms, that you don't really need to run an old school Sega Genesis or Sega CD to play with the blue hedgehog. Need, however, is not what this is about. Swisscom verkauft 330’000 iPhones (79’000 iPhone 3GS)
Die Swisscom hat seit der iPhone-Lancierung am 11. Juli 2008 bis Ende September 2009 330’000 iPhones (3G und 3GS) verkauft. Alleine vom neuen iPhone 3GS wurden seit dessen Lancierung am 19. Juni 2009 bis Ende September 79’000 Geräte verkauft. Die Verkaufszahlen des iPhone 3G vor einem Jahr waren im selben Quartal (Q3/2008) mit 116’000 Geräten höher - und fehlte dabei (da spätere Markteinführung) - noch ein halber Monat. Schon das zweite webOS Gerät von Palm. Pixi versucht gegenüber dem Pre mit dem kompletten Keyboard aufzutrumpfen, gleichzeitig aber auch einen guten 2,6-Zoll Touchscreen zu liefern und wirkt irgendwie dabei wie ein entfernter Verwandter des Centro. Der 600Mhz Qualcomm MSM7627 ist zwar nicht ganz so schnell wie beim Pre, die Animationen geraten gelegentlich etwas ins Wackeln und gerade der Browser ist manchmal sehr langsam, dafür aber ist die Batterielaufzeit um einiges besser. Visuell hat sich wenig getan, aber endlich kommt das Storm mit WiFi und einem komplett überdachten SurePress Konzept, das ihr euch am besten im Video ansehen könnt. Das Drücken des Screens erweist sich als etwas schwergängig, und gerade beim Tippen erweist sich auch das Multitouch Konzept als etwas umständlich. GameStop has been dropping hints about its digital download plans for a little while now, but it looks to have done its most extensive and official talking about the matter yet at the recent BMO Capital Management Digital Entertainment conference, where it confirmed that it will start testing the program "early next year" with kiosks in an unspecified number of stores. iTunes Vorschau: iTunes Store-Inhalte im Webbrowser
Apple bastelt seit einer guten Woche massiv am iTunes Store herum. Das Resultat war nicht durchweg erfreulich: Neben kleineren Darstellungsfehlern nerven seither auch die sich nicht mehr automatisch schließenden Fenster mit Links zum iTunes Store. Wenigstens zeichnet sich nun jedoch ein Grund für diese Veränderungen ab: "iTunes Vorschau".
Während es bislang nicht möglich war, ohne iTunes-Installation einen Blick in die virtuellen Regale des iTunes Store zu werfen, wird nun beim Aufruf eines iTunes-Musiklinks (die anderen Bereiche funktionieren derzeit noch nicht) eine umfassende Vorschauseite mitsamt Abumcover, Titelliste, Bewertungen und Empfehlungen direkt im Webbrowser angezeigt (Testlink). Wer iTunes installiert hat, wird zusätzlich wie bisher auf das Angebot im iTunes Store weitergeleitet.

After Seagate, Western Digital, SanDisk, Woz, it is now OCZ CEO to comment the future of the SSD market. Without much surprise, being now a major player in the field with its models (Vertex, Summit, Value ), he expects that SSD will take over plate-based HD in coming years. He thinks that within the next 3 to 5 years, the price/GB will be the same between a SSD and a plate-based HD.

G-Skill markets, since some time ,the Falcon SSD, a product identical to the Vertex and using the Barefoot Indilix controller. They have just announced the Falcon II.
These discs now use NAND Flash memory engraved at 34 nm and a controller Indilix Eco. YouTube to add support for 1080p video content
YouTube has announced that it will allow users to upload 1080p HD video content without limiting playback to a lower resolution. The web-based interface will provide a choice between the current maximum, 720p, and full 1080p. The change brings YouTube up to speed with the limited number of video portals, such as SmugMug, that support the higher resolution.

Panasonic intros MW-10 photo frame and audio system
Panasonic on Thursday introduced the MW-10, a device that combines a photo frame with an audio system and iPod dock. The system integrates a CD player, AM/FM tuner, 45-station preset memory, and a 9-inch WVGA LCD with 4GB of internal memory for picture storage. Samsung responds to Symbian claims, says it's still supporting it
Contrary to popular belief (and reports from yesterday), it seems that Samsung actually isn't planning to ditch Symbian anytime soon -- or at least it's not prepared to tell the public. Shortly after announcing its own Bada OS, rumors began to fly that Symbian support would fade in the near future; according to a company representative speaking with Mobile Burn, however, that's simply not true. Livestream Procaster outs app-free iPhone video streaming
Livestream has launched its live internet video service, Livestream Procaster, allowing for app-free access to streaming video on the iPhone. The service allows users to stream video content from webcams, video cameras or the desktops of a Mac or PC. The feeds can be accessed from an iPhone and iPod touch, using either 3G or Wi-Fi. The turnkey service uses H.264 HTTP live streaming functionality built into the native QuickTime player included on the iPhone, allowing streams to play in the Safari browser instead of a standalone app.

Windows Marketplace's newest anti-piracy measures already thwarted
Yar, that was fast. Less than a day after Microsoft updated its Windows Marketplace for Mobile with new advanced anti-piracy measure, some apt xda-developers community member has managed to crack the new code -- in under two hours, according to Chainfire's posting. The hack itself won't be posted, but we're sure other astute programmers, many of more nefarious intention, will be able to have their way with it just as easy. Sad for developers who've been wanting something more secure -- better luck next update.

Microsoft patents sudo system used in Mac OS X, Linux?
The USPTO recently granted Microsoft a patent, No. 7,617,530, which describes a method for running a command as an administrator. The filing has sparked outrage by many, including Groklaw blogger Pamela Jones, who believe the company has simply rebranded the sudo Unix command developed in the 1980s by members of the Computer Science department at SUNY/Buffalo.

AT&T responds to Verizon's 3G ad campaign -- by bragging about EDGE

Samsung Behold II hits T-Mobile on November 18th, unboxed today
Dubbing itself the "multimedia powerhouse" for T-Mobile's expansive Android lineup, the Samsung Behold II has just been confirmed for that rumored November 18th launch on T-Mobile (still no word on price, though we're hearing a predictable $200). The slate-style touchscreen handset has a 3.2-inch AMOLED display, and puts it to good use with a hearty skinning job on the part of Samsung, porting in most (but not all) of its TouchWiz UI -- unfortunately for us, that silly cube menu made the cut. Core i5 iMac arrives: first benchmarks
