If you were thinking of tearing apart your own Droid, let us direct you first to this quote straight from the folks at phoneWreck: "no easy task." It seems that even finding some of the screws involved in holding the mess together were tricky to locate, but at the end of the day, good old-fashioned human ingenuity prevailed over well, other human ingenuity, and the phone fell asunder into the 16 pieces you see here. HP buys network firm 3Com for $2.7 billion
HP in a late afternoon update said it had bought 3Com in a cash deal the equivalent of $2.7 billion. The deal is meant to help HP's involvement in the server and networking businesses and turns the PC builder into a near-total source for datacenters and other large-scale server environments. The two partners are still waiting on government approval but hope to complete the deal sometime in the first half of next year.

With the release of Windows 7 has come a serious onslaught on new laptops. Great news for us, since we love choices -- but we don't really get a chance to take them all for a spin. ASUS's UL80Vt caught our eye for a few reasons. The company's increasingly attractive designs coupled with a really eye-catching price made it likely that this laptop (which is caught somewhere between a full-sizer and a netbook) could be on a lot of people's radars this holiday season. InFocus outs two new DLP projectors for classrooms
InFocus has released two new DLP projectors meant for the business and educational markets with the IN3902 and IN3904. The main difference between the two is the former's native 1024x768 resolution and the latter's 1280x800 resolution. Shared between the two is compatibility with InFocus' LiteBoard technology, which allows users to interact with the projectors, annotating, appending and highlighting projected content with a wireless remote called the LiteBoard Wand.

Safari 4.0.4 boosts performance, stability
Apple has released Safari 4.0.4, a minor update to the Mac and Windows web browser. The patch makes relatively few changes, but does boost the performance of JavaScript, as well as Full History Searches in the case of a "large number" of items. Stability fixes have been implemented for the search field and Yahoo! Mail.

Psystar founders claim they cracked OS X, hackintosh scene is 'all wrong'
Okay, so we're reading this puff piece in the Miami New Times about would-be Mac cloner Psystar, and while we're somewhat willing to dismiss author Tim Elfrintz's various mischaracterizations of the law and what Psystar is actually doing as just laziness and / or ignorance, there's a quote here from Psystar founder Rudy Pedraza that simply leaps off the page:

HP to acquire 3Com in $2.7 billion deal
It's been a little while since we've seen a good multi-billion dollar acquisition, but HP's sure come through in a big way today, announcing that it plans to acquire networking giant 3Com in an all-cash deal valued at $2.7 billion, or $7.90 a share. Second analyst backs CDMA/GSM hybrid iPhone
Rumors of a dual-network iPhone gained fuel on Wednesday with an analyst report from Northeast Securities claiming to know of the device. Pointing to checks within the parts chain, the analyst group expects an iPhone with both CDMA and WCDMA support to be ready by the summer of 2010. The change would let the phone work on Sprint, Verizon, and a handful of other international networks while still having the WCDMA foundations needed for UMTS and HSPA 3G on AT&T and most worldwide cell providers.

Parrot debuts Android-based Grande Specchio photo frame
We've heard promises of an Android-based photo frame as far back as May of this year, but it looks like the folks at Parrot are now finally set to deliver with their new Grande Specchio designer frame. As you might be able to surmise from words like "grande" and "designer," however, this one doesn't come cheap (a hefty $650), but you do of course get quite a bit for all that extra cash. That includes a large 10.4-inch touchscreen that doubles as a mirror (on purpose), WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity, a USB port and SD card slot for expansion and, of course, Android hiding under Parrot's custom interface.

Firefox most vulnerable browser, Safari close
Despite stereotypes, Mozilla's Firefox is significantly more vulnerable to web attacks than any of its rivals, a Cenzic study (PDF) claimed late yesterday. About 44 percent of the 3,1000 exploits tracked by the researchers attacked the open-source browser where only 15 percent of them would work in Internet Explorer. Safari is notably much closer to Firefox in vulnerability as 35 percent of exploits could affect the platform, while Opera's small market share left just 6 percent of attacks putting it at risk.

Windows 7 design takes cues from Mac OS X, says MS manager
The "look and feel" of the Windows 7 interface borrows from Macs, according to a Microsoft partner group manager, Simon Aldous. "One of the things that people say an awful lot about the Apple Mac is that the OS is fantastic, that it's very graphical and easy to use," explains Aldous in an interview. We'll be honest -- before today, we had never heard of Simon Aldous, but it sure seems as if he's trying hard to get his name out there. Mr. Aldous, a group manager at Microsoft, recently sat down for a rather lengthy talk with PCR. Most of the back-and-forth revolved around receiving input from partners and other mildly boring topics, but one particular Q&A was pointed directly at the outfit's newest operating system. Sanyo on Wednesday revealed its new Eneloop Stick Booster. Acer, Apple gain European PC market share
Acer and Apple are the two primary computer makers gaining share in Europe at a time when most are bleeding sales, Gartner revealed in a research note today. Acer extended its lead in the summer to 28.3 percent of the Western European market, or 4.73 million PCs, based primarily on its netbooks and full-size budget PCs. However, Apple was one of the few others to gain significant share and was one of the "biggest winners," along with Samsung, despite being outside of the top five in the region.

Zune HD 3D games video hands-on
It took us a tick to get our Zune HD loaded up with those new 3D games that were released this morning, but we thought you might want to check out a quick hands-on. That Tegra chip is no joke -- the graphics in PGR: Ferrari Edition are easily on par with the PSP and quite possibly better, with intricate textures, high-quality reflections, and smooth framerates. The other games aren't nearly as intense, but they're just as smooth. Best of all? They're free -- although you will have to look at a Zune ad while they load. Not the worst tradeoff in the world, but we'd love to see what paid app developers could do if Microsoft would open this beast up. Check the video after the break.

Bigshot camera kit could help turn your kid on to the dark world of the teardown
Pardon us while we freely admit that we have literally no idea what's going on inside a camera -- whether it's digital or those quaint film-based ones you hear about from your grandma. Luckily, our own kids might not have to suffer as we have: a group at the Computer Vision Laboratory at Columbia University have designed and built a prototype digital camera that should demystify the devices. The Big Shot digital camera kit, if / when it hits the market, will be a box of all the necessary parts for kids to be able to build their own simple, candy-colored digital camera. While the Big Shot is still in prototype testing phase, we really hope this gadget (and more like it) makes it to the market sometime soon.

Lucid's GPU-mixing HYDRA Engine gets previewed, shows real promise
After a bit of a delay Lucid is back on our radar -- and we're pleased to say that the company's technology for combining multiple GPUs seems to be well on course. Indeed, a few HYDRA 200 units appear to be out and about, with preliminary tests showering love on the device. When the kids at Hot Hardware put theirs through its paces they encountered drivers issues (not surprising for something still in development) but still reported running a mixed ATI / NVIDIA combo for "impressive scaling" most of the time, peaking at 85% in dual-GPU mode. So geht´s dann immer lustig im Kreis, wenn Firmen Software auf Geräten einsperren wollen, auch wenn die Anwendung eigentlich auch auf den Kisten links und recht laufen würde, wenn da nicht die künstlichen Beschränkungen eingebaut wären Aber dafür gibt es ja schlaue Hacker, deren neuester Streich die Befreiung von Googles Navigation von der strikten Bindung an Motorolas DROID ist (in den USA, hierzulande ist wieder alles ganz anders). Microsoft has posted a fresh update for Office 2008 for Mac, v12.2.3. The patch primarily addresses stability problems, such as one affecting the entire suite which could result in application crashes after a program was opened. Several unique crash scenarios have been fixed in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Document Connection. Security has also been upgraded, closing a hole which could be used to overwrite memory with malicious code.

Win Mobile 7 to test in winter, ship in summer?
Microsoft has sped up the release schedule for Windows Mobile 7 to less than a year after 6.5, a leak hinted today. The company is reportedly set to launch a test program in early 2010, codenamed "Maldives," that will let smartphone makers check the mobile OS against their hardware relatively early. A new, more serious danger to jailbroken iPhones has emerged, says security firm Intego. The threat, currently labeled "iPhone/Privacy.A," is described as a hacking tool based on the same vulnerability used by the recent Ikee worm. Unlike Ikee however, Privacy.A is not meant as a warning but rather a malicious means of stealing data from an iPhone. Attackers can steal contacts, e-mail, text messages and anything else in an iPhone's storage.

Samsung senior VP Don Joo Lee today confirmed rumored plans that it will dismiss Symbian from its smartphones. Freenet verzeichnet im dritten Quartal Umsatz- und Gewinnrückgang
Freenet hat seine Bilanz für das dritte Geschäftsquartal 2009 (PDF) veröffentlicht. Demnach verzeichnete der Büdelsdorfer Telekommunikationskonzern, der seit April unter dem Namen Mobilcom Debitel firmiert, gegenüber dem Vorjahr einen Umsatzrückgang von 1,02 Milliarden auf 929,8 Millionen Euro. Der Gewinn brach im selben Zeitraum von 140,2 Millionen auf 2,1 Millionen Euro ein.

GPS-Erweiterung für den iPod touch angekündigt
Der US-Anbieter DUAL Electronics will mit dem XGPS300 noch in diesem Monat
speziell für den iPod touch konzipierte GPS-Erweiterung auf den Markt bringen. Das Gerät einnert optisch an ein Akkupack und tatsächlich wurde neben dem GPS-Empfänger auch ein Akku integriert, der nicht nur den Empfänger mit Strom versorgt sondern laut Herstellerangaben auch die Laufzeit des iPod-Akkus verdoppelt. Zudem findet sich an der Hülle ein Mini-USB-Anschluss, ein Audioausgang, ein integriertes Mikrofon sowie kleiner Lautsprecher.
Parallel zur Hardware will DUAL ein eigenes Programm namens NavAtlas als voll funktionsfähige Navigationslösung kostenlos im App Store anbieten, dies vorerst aber nur mit Karten für die USA und Kanada. Das XGPS300 soll sich aber ebenso gut mit Navigationslösungen von anderen Anbietern verstehen.

Breitbandausbau: Fördermittel werden häufig nicht abgerufen
Der Verband der Anbieter von Telekommunikations- und Mehrwertdiensten e. V. (VATM) hat darauf hingewiesen, dass öffentliche Fördergelder für den Ausbau der Breitbandinfrastruktur zum allergrößten Teil nicht abgerufen werden. Bund und Länder stellen jedes Jahr 16,7 Millionen Euro im Topf "Gemeinschaftsaufgabe Verbesserung der Agrarstruktur und des Küstenschutzes" (GAK) bereit.

Studie: TK-Markt 2009
Die Umsätze mit Telekommunikationsdiensten in Deutschland werden 2009 auf rund 62 Mrd. Euro sinken. Das entspricht im Vergleich zum Vorjahr einem Rückgang um 3,6 Prozent. Ursache sind unter anderem weiter sinkende Endkundenpreise. Im Festnetzbereich können alternative Anbieter (+0,4 Mrd. €) und Kabelnetzbetreiber (+0,6 Mrd. €) zulegen. Trotz steigender Minutenzahlen und Datenumsätze sinkt der Umsatz im Mobilfunk um 1,8 Milliarden Euro auf 23,6 Milliarden Euro (-7%). Das sind Ergebnisse der elften gemeinsamen TK-Marktstudie vom Verband der Anbieter von Telekommunikations- und Mehrwertdienstleistungen (VATM) und Dialog Consult, die in Frankfurt a. Review: BlackBerry Bold 9700
RIM is not typically known for revolutionary new phones that are entirely different than previous models. The BlackBerry Bold 9700 certainly stays consistent as it is represents an evolutionary step forward from the Bold and other previous BlackBerries. While itís apparent that RIM has put a lot of work into perfecting the design, our Bold 9700 review will see if it's perfect for converting iPhone and Windows Mobile users into devotees.

Blue Microphones, the same company responsible for the heralded Snowball, is today introducing the planet's first THX certified microphone or so it says. Bowers & Wilkins intros MM-1 desktop speakers
Loudspeaker company Bowers & Wilkins has announced its latest set of computer speakers, the MM-1. Each speaker integrates one 3-inch woofer and a 1-inch tweeter, with each driver powered by a dedicated 18W amplifier. The tweeters feature B&W's Nautilus tube-loaded design claimed to dampen resonance and improve high-frequency sounds.

Adobe to layoff 680 full-time employees, 9% of workforce
Adobe announced a layoff today in an 8-K filing made with the Securities & Exchange Commission. 860 fulltime workers or 9% of its workforce will be laid off over the next year.

OCZ announced to have signed a contract with the company SandForce to get access to its controller for their future SSD models. Blue Microphones has expanded its line of consumer products with the Yeti, a USB-attached condenser mic with THX certification. Viewsonic offically launches VPD400 MovieBook media player
Viewsonic was showing this one off way back in July alongside a slew of other gear, but it's just now gotten fully official with its VPD400 MovieBook media player, which is apparently available right away for $129.99. That will get you a 4.3-inch 800 x 480 display, 8GB of internal memory, a micro SD card slot for more, an AV out port for some bigger screen viewing (not HDMI, it seems), and a promised 12 hours of battery life for audio and six for video -- not to mention your choice of black, pink or white color options.
