Sprint pulls piping hot Hero update out of the oven
We don't have details on exactly what has changed yet, but that minor Android 1.5-based update Sprint had announced it'd be pushing out to the Hero has now launched. The best-case scenario would have the SMS issue -- which causes the phone to stay awake when it shouldn't -- get resolved, but until Sprint hands out a proper changelog, it'll be a matter of testing and guessing. Just a thought: if they've managed to squeeze a proximity sensor into the update, that brings 'em up to the speed with the Droid Eris. Hey, it could happen.

Army, Lockheed Martin team up for DisOPS 'battlefield PDAs'
Remember the Land Warrior program, which only took 15 years and half a billion dollars outfit our troops with high-tech battlefield uniforms? With DisOPS ("distributed operations") Lockheed Martin is taking a different tack. Deployed to Special Forces in Afghanistan, the system is comprised of the Connect software which runs on ruggedized laptop computers, allowing squad leaders to plan missions on a map, and View PDAs that receive info over tactical radio, cellphone, or even WiFi networks. QuickTime 7.6.5 für Windows veröffentlicht

G-phone rumor rears its ugly head again
Update: It might just be a VoIP phone.
Forgive us if we don't take this one at face value. Michael Arrington over at TechCrunch says there is a Google-branded phone in the works. They don't have many details except that it will be heading to market in January, and that is only because it is taking longer than expected.
Sure, they might be doing another level of co-branding like Microsoft is doing with Sharp on their Pink phones. But they've already gone down that road. Verizon

Apple in talks with Qualcomm for iPhone chips
Bloomberg says:
Qualcomm Inc., the world’s biggest maker of handset chips, is in talks to supply products for use in Apple Inc.’s iPhone, Chief Executive Officer Paul Jacobs said. “We continue to discuss it, but haven’t made it yet,” Jacobs said in a Bloomberg Television interview in Hong Kong today. “Hopefully, in the future, we will have the opportunity.”
We don't know about you, but this has Verizon Worldmode written all over it to us.

Firefox 3.6 Beta 3 released
Mozilla just released Firefox 3.6 Beta3. This one features Component Directory Lockdown which will disable support for incompatible add-ons, theoretically making Firefox more stable. Make sure your important Add-ons are Kosher before installing. Other fun new stuff in this version.

Firefox 3.6 Beta 3 freigegeben

Qualcomm Mirasol-equipped color e-book reader said to be on track for late 2010
Qualcomm's Mirasol displays have already found their way into quite a few products, but the company looks to really be branching out into some new territory with its latest prototype: an e-book reader with a full-color, 5.7-inch display. AMD hat Version 9.11 seiner Grafiktreiber ATI Catalyst für Windows und Linux freigegeben. Unter Windows unterstützt das Update für Radeon-Grafikkarten ab der HD-2000-Serie die in Adobe Flash Player 10.1 Beta enthaltene Hardwarebeschleunigung für das Videoformat H.264. Voraussetzung dafür ist allerdings eine Platine der Reihen HD 4000 oder HD 5000.

NVIDIA's Fermi-based GeForce 100 GPU makes a Twitter appearance
We'd been hearing that NVIDIA's Fermi chips had been delayed, but they're apparently far enough along for spokesperson Brian Burke to tweet this image of the new Fermi-based GeForce 100 GPU running the Unigine Heaven DX11 benchmark earlier today. That's certainly one way to hit back at ATI's launch of the fastest graphics card ever, the Radeon HD 5970, but we'd much rather have some hard info to work with. Ziemlich genau vor einem Jahr hat die DARPA fast 5 Millionen Dollar in ein IBM-Projekt gesteckt, bei dem ein Computer entwickelt werden sollte, der das Gehirn eines Lebewesens emulieren kann. Damals hatten die Forscher immerhin schon ein halbes Mäusehirn hinbekommen und sich danach das einer Katze vorgenommen. Nun sollen sie es geschafft haben: die Katze ist sozusagen im Kasten. G-phone rumor rears its ugly head again
Forgive us if we don't take this one at face value. Michael Arrington over at TechCrunch says there is a Google-branded phone in the works. They don't have many details except that it will be heading to market in January, and that is only because it is taking longer than expected.
Sure, they might be doing another level of co-branding like Microsoft is doing with Sharp on their Pink phones. But they've already gone down that road. Verizon already sells the Droid with Google branding and Tmobile has sold the G1 "with Google" branding since day one. Expanding on that isn't what we are talking about here.
What Arrington is talking about is a Google product, sold by Google with no other branding on it. The OS won't have to go thru carriers' systems. It will be maintained by Google. Just like the iPhone is maintained by Apple.

OK, we weren't either -- until we saw this: Umazone's UMA-ISO is a drive enclosure (supply your own 2.5-inch HDD) that features a small display and jog wheel for scrolling through CD / DVD image files. Sony Ericsson cutting four offices, 2,000 jobs?
Sony Ericsson is in the middle of a surprise, major cost-cutting measure that will close some of its key buildings, an internal memo has revealed today. The cellphone designer is notifying workers that it's closing its Research Triangle Park facility in North Carolina as well as offices in Chennai (India), Kista (Sweden) and Miami. As a result, Engadget hears the company will have to drop 2,000 jobs, or more than four times the 450 jobs it dropped in 2008.

Korea ready for iPhone sales, China Mobile still in talks

Google phone real, due early 2010?
Google's rumored self-developed Android phone is real but has been pushed back, a scoop claimed on late Tuesday. The handset would be built by a third party, most likely LG or Samsung rather than the previously preferred HTC, but would carry only Google's branding and is said by TechCrunch to be designed almost exclusively according to Google's design. It would launch in early 2010 after a delay but would receive heavy marketing as soon as January.

Phishing scam hits Mac users - stay safe online
We received word this morning of what could be a brand new phishing attack that’s in circulation at present - an email which purports to be from Apple retail and asks for details of any recent orders. The email (image above) also carries a stuffed file. This contains an ‘exe’ file which will only launch on a Windows machine, as with all such phishing trips, be advised not to click on any attachments from sources you don’t know/trust.The email reads: “We recorded a payment request from ‘Apple Inc.’ to enable the charge of $7,548.45 on your account.” It then goes on to advise readers to click on the attachment in the email in the event they want the transaction stopped.The reader who forwarded this to us wrote: “I thought you might be interested in this. Sony Ericsson closing four facilities, laying off 2,000 employees worldwide
Sony Ericsson has yet to make this public, but we've learned that the flagging handset maker has caved once more to the pressures of the modern phone market place. If you'll recall, 450 employees were nixed from the company's payrolls in September of last year, and now the entire Research Triangle Park facility is being shuttered. In an internal announcement made this morning, SE is fixing to close four total sites: RTP in North Carolina, a smaller Miami facility and plants in Kista (Sweden) and Chennai. All told, 2,000 employees will be trimmed, with severance packages being offered to those who qualify. As of now, the departing individuals have yet to b

Apple's laptops rate 'Better than Average' in reliability study
We know some of the fanboys aren't going to like Apple's laptops anywhere but at the top of a reliabilty test. Therefore, take this with a grain of salt. A recent study (PDF) by SquareTrade research has shown that Apple's laptops just rate "Above Average".
Asus and Toshiba's laptops ranked higher prompting SquareTrade to remark, "ASUS and Toshiba laptops failed just over half as frequently as HP, which makes them a solid bet in terms of reliability." Apple ranked at 4th place in the study of nine manufacturers between Sony and Dell.

China Unicom's Prez: iPhone to become China’s best-selling smart phone
Bloomberg has the story.
China Unicom (Hong Kong) Ltd. Chairman Chang Xiaobing said he expects Apple Inc.’s iPhone to become China’s best-selling smart phone, countering skepticism by analysts who say the handset is too expensive. “We’re very confident about the market position of the iPhone,” Chang said yesterday in Hong Kong in his first interview with overseas media since becoming head of the company in 2004. Unicom, China’s second-biggest wireless carrier, started an advertising program for the device this week, he said.
That could just be being a good partner but good to hear nonetheless -especially with Android phones from Dell and others on the way.

BGH will über Rechtmäßigkeit des Handels mit gebrauchter Software entscheiden
Wie Oracle heute mitgeteilt hat, will der Bundesgerichtshof laut Beschluss vom 12. November 2009 (Aktenzeichen I ZR 129/08) in einem Revisionsverfahren klären, ob der Handel mit gebrauchten Softwarelizenzen beziehungsweise der Weiterverkauf von Softwarelizenzen an Dritte rechtswidrig ist oder nicht. Ausgelöst wurde der Beschluss durch einen Revisionsantrag zu einem Verfahren zwischen Oracle und Usedsoft vor dem Oberlandesgericht München.

AMD on Wednesday bragged of the graphics performance crown with the launch of the ATI Radeon HD 5970. The card uses two 5800 series chipsets on one card to provide the most performance possible. So richtig in die Puschen kommt die Sache mit den Blu-rays wohl auch in den USA nicht: Warner hat dort nun ein Umtauschprogramm namens DVD2Blu ins Leben gerufen, bei dem man seine (Warner-)DVDs ab 7,95 Dollar in die Blu-ray Version umtauschen kann. haben eine Studie veröffentlicht, derzufolge eBook Apps auf dem iPhone boomen. Mit 20 Prozent aller Apps haben eBook und eReader Apps danach die Spiele (13 Prozent) vom Spitzenplatz der beliebtesten Apps-Genre verdrängt. Google kündigt Chrome-OS-Event für Donnerstag an

OCZ Colossus: 3,5"-SSD mit internem RAID 0
OCZ hat die Auslieferung eines weiteren Solid State Drives auf Basis des Barefoot-Controllers von Indilinx bekannt gegeben. Ägypten beantragt erste arabische Top-Level-Domain
Die ägyptische Regierung hat bei der Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) einen internationalen Domainnamen (IDN) beantragt. Es ist der erste Antrag auf eine Top-Level-Domain (TLD) in arabischer Sprache. Der Minister für Kommunikation und Informationstechnologien, Tarek Mohamed Kamel, hat auf einem Treffen des Internet Governance Forum in Sharm el Sheikh angekündigt, der Domainname laute in Arabisch ".misr", was übersetzt ".egypt" bedeute.

Viele Händler haben keine iMacs mit 27" mehr auf Lager

iTunes Fansites auf Facebook
iTunes US und iTunes UK haben bereits seit gut zwei Monaten eine ‘Page’ auf Facebook - nun ziehen iTunes Schweiz und andere nach. Während jedoch z.B. bei der Deutschen iTunes Page bereits über den besten Song und das besta Album 2009 abgestimmt werden kann, fehlt diesbezüglich noch eine Verknüpfung auf der Schweizer iTunes Facebook-Page.

AMD Keeps Working on Reducing Power Consumption of its GPU
During years, GPU designers never looked at power consumption and over years, GPU becomes the most power draining component of a computer. AMD seems to have finally understood the lesson, initiated with the Radeon HD 4770, the founder is now working on reducing power draining for 2D rendering. If one could have imagine the new record high energy required to power the forthcoming Radeon HD 5970 (featuring 2 GPUs, same one found in the Radeon HD 5870), final figures indicate that it could be much more sober than initially thought.
Of course, when fully loaded, the GPU will drain 294W, it will only consume 42W for 2D rendering, so less than the Radeon HD 4870, despite 2 GB of VRAM. This is a significant effort in power management and design. This can only serve the end users by offering more power for the same or even less power consumption.

Stolen iPhones: Worth 2 Millions Euro
One of the most important case of stolen iPhone has been recorded in Willebrouck, Flemish part of Belgium. Thieves were particularly well informed to enter the storage place and to steal 4,000 iPhones units dedicated to the Belgium carrier Mobistar. If this is the proof that such device is very popular, it might well be difficult for those thieves to be able to sell those units properly. Indeed, all stolen units are known and identified for Apple and Mobistar, so it will be easy to block them all. Even tough one could use them after a jailbreak, the IMEEI and the ICCID will be presented available for carriers and it would be easy to spot stolen iPhone and its owner via his subscription plan.
Of course, those stolen iPhone will soon appear on auction places, and being originally Belgium model, they are by default SIM unlocked, however, this procedure is in fact completed when the iPhone is activated, and depending on the serial number of the iPhone

iMac Core i5: Already Out of Stock
We have received several reports from users and other sources, indicating that Apple can not face the higher than expected demand for iMac powered by Core i5 (and i7) CPU. If one can understand the interest for such models from the first benchmarking and tests performed on such hardware (here and there), we are surprised how fast stocks for such models went down. Apple will have to work quickly to ensure that it would not prevent the company to sell iMac due to poor availability, pushing users back into PC manufacturer's arms

Empfehlungsmarketing für Apps: Chorus
Mit inzwischen auch von Apple bestätigten über 100.000 für den App Store zugelassenen Apps ist die wahre Herausforderung für Anwender längst geworden, die passende App aus dem Überangebot herauszufiltern (und für Anbieter, das passende Angebot auch bekannt zu machen). Die Problematik hat schon verschiedene Lösungsversuche hervorgerufen, neben Apples eigenem Service Genius gibt es beispielsweise fluke (Zufallszahlengenerator), AppConnect, App Gems, App Sniper, AppVee oder Pandora Box.
Der neue Chef im Ring, Chorus, ist leider bis dato noch nicht im deutschen App Store erhältlich (aber einen US-iTunes Account einzurichten ist nun wirklich kein Hexenwerk). Wenn das Netzwerk es über den Teich schafft, könnte es auch hier deutlichen Erfolg haben - abhängig davon, wie intensiv es genutzt wird. DIY Robolamps are part lamp, part robot, all awesome
While we're mostly concerned with covering the latest in gadgets and technology, there's occasionally some humble creations that spend months building up enough stream to finally break into the public's consciousness, and we'd be remiss if we didn't take notice. One such piece of magic is the Robolamp series of, well, robot lamps that Robert Matysiak has been working on for the past two years, and looks to have recently gone all out with in the last few months. Microsoft: mobile apps aren't important
Mobile apps aren't an important factor in the success of a smartphone platform, Microsoft chief software architect Ray Ozzie claimed today. Interviewed at the company's Professional Developer Conference, the veteran developer tried to downplay apps as a lure and insisted that "all the apps that count" will be available on every smartphone as the time to write and port code is much shorter than on the desktop. Adobe has announced an update to its live audio and video capturing utility, Flash Media Live Encoder 3.1. The app is designed as a media encoder that streams both audio and video in real time to Flash Media Server software or the Flash Video Streaming Service. Pooch clustering software adds Snow Leopard support
Dauger Research has announced Pooch and Pooch Pro 1.8 with new support for Snow Leopard. The clustering software provides a graphical user interface for its supercomputer-compatible parallel computing utiliities. Version 1.8 can configure, manage, monitor and maintain Mac clusters (also Linux clusters) and uses technology like BSD-standard sockets for communications, POSIX-standard paths for file access, and Apple's open source mDNS library.

ASUS G51J 3D sports NVIDIA 3D Vision with 120Hz display to bring "real" 3D to laptops
No knock on Acer, who got here first with the Aspire 5738DG, but it sounds like the ASUS G51J 3D has the technology edge in the nascent 3D laptop category. We'll have to see it in action to be sure, but the laptop is using NVIDIA's 3D Vision tech for extensive game compatibility (around 400 games currently work with it), and a 120Hz, 15.6-inch screen paired with some active shutter glasses. We've found the shutter method to be typically a more enjoyable 3D experience than polarized solutions, with no knock on frame rate or resolution. China Unicom's Prez: iPhone to become China’s best-selling smart phone
Bloomberg has the story.
China Unicom (Hong Kong) Ltd. Chairman Chang Xiaobing said he expects Apple Inc.’s iPhone to become China’s best-selling smart phone, countering skepticism by analysts who say the handset is too expensive. “We’re very confident about the market position of the iPhone,” Chang said yesterday in Hong Kong in his first interview with overseas media since becoming head of the company in 2004. Unicom, China’s second-biggest wireless carrier, started an advertising program for the device this week, he said.
That could just be being a good partner but good to hear nonetheless -especially with Android phones from Dell and others on the way.

Google announcing Chrome OS launch plans this Thursday
It's looking increasingly unlikely that Google's Chrome OS is really launching this week (not that we were really that convinced anyway). What is true, however, is that the company is hosting an event later this week at its Mountain View, CA headquarters to showcase its progress, provide an overview of the platform, and give information on its "launch plans for next year." Everplay beta plays iTunes collections, supports Last FM
Snarb.tk has released a public beta of its new iTunes controller, Everplay. The new media player offers playback of music from iTunes libraries and Last.fm online radio services. It can browse and search for individual tracks, with metadata and playcounts both updated on the next launch of iTunes. Everplay also supports a jukebox mode for making playlists on the fly.

Google to show Chrome OS on Thursday
Google's rumored Chrome OS release should primarily center on its first public demo of the platform, a notice tonight. An event is said due on Thursday that should include a "complete overview" of the web-centric OS, including its technical underpinnings as well as demos. It's now thought by TechCrunch that a code release is possible but that a more formal release isn't coming until 2010.
