Barnes & Noble Nook now arriving to customers
There was a definite moment of utter pre-launch confusion there, but it looks like the Barnes & Noble Nook is indeed shipping to customers -- reader Peter just sent in this photo of his cold chilling on a desk. We'll see if B&N can crank out the rest of its pre-orders before the holidays, but at least there's hope now -- and we can always tell you where Peter lives if that doesn't work out.

Analyst sees Sprint, T-Mobile merging in 2010
Citi Investment Research sparked a reaction in the market today by predicting that Sprint and T-Mobile will merge before the end of 2010. Company analyst Michael Rollins in a note increased the odds of a deal to 55 percent as Sprint may not consider its job cuts and cellphone business improvements enough to offset widening losses. It could change its mind in the first half of the year if any service changes in the winter don't bear fruit, Rollins explained.

Nokia confirms New York and Chicago flagship stores are closing in early 2010
No surprises here, but Nokia has confirmed a Nokia Experts report today that the company will be shutting down its North American flagship stores in New York and Chicago, leaning on big boxes and carriers to handle the in-store experiences going forward. Considering the fractional market presence Nokia has in the States compared to the UK -- where it's closing its Regent Street location -- the move comes as no shock, but it's still a shame to see a couple really attractive, high-tech hero locations to go see Nokia's latest wares close down. Is Microsoft Scared by Apple?
While Windows 7 is surfing on a good selling wave and Microsoft is still a giant in OS and software, the company is looking at the incredible Apple's success story with mixed feelings. The website 9to5mac reports that Apple and its products are indeed now references for many players in the field, generating fears and stress. During a press conference about Windows Mobile 6.5, a Microsoft representative went to a journalist and asked him to avoid any mention of Apple and the iPhone. The reason might be linked to the fact that the same journalist was praising the iPhone as the mobile phone with the most user friendly and easiest interface. As its name indicates it, Windows Mobile 6.5 is not a revolutionary OS, and only the support for touch screen makes it different than its predecessor. Manufacturers using WM 6.5 for their handhelds will have to wait till mid-2010 before seeing WM 7. Samsung intros rugged CF, SDHC cards
Samsung on Wednesday introduced its new line of rugged memory cards for the UK market. The CF plus and SD plus cards are waterproof, capable of withstanding 24 hours of submersion in sea water. Analyst: '70 percent chance' of Verizon iPhone in 2010
There are several reasons why the iPhone will come to Verizon in 2010, argues Piper Jaffray analyst Chris Larsen. AT&T's exclusive hold on the US iPhone is set to expire in the near future, probably before the release of a new model next summer. Analyst noise: Apple tablet in March for $1k, publishers on-board, Verizon iPhone coming too
If you've been following mainstream news today, then it's likely you've seen the story doing the rounds on new Apple tablet rumors, spurred by a note sent to clients from Oppenheimer analyst Yair Reiner. External graphics cards may well be a rarity these days, but we're not sure if this simple fact justifies the launch of a grotesque and debatably heinous ad campaign. Boxee Box pictured in the wild: it's small!
Whoa, we sort of guessed the Boxee Box was going to be small from those press pics we saw the other night, but we didn't know it was going to be freaking tiny -- check out this shot of the asymmetrical set-top next to a Coke can just posted up on the Boxee blog. Sadly, neither Boxee nor D-Link has updated us on what's actually powering this little guy, but we do now know that it'll have an RF remote control and S/PDIF and RCA audio outputs in addition to HDMI, SD, USB, WiFi, and Ethernet. Sounds like a tiny little chunk of awesome -- we're looking forward to finding out way more at CES.

Acer: ultra-thin notebooks are the future
Ultra-thin notebooks are the future but are being hampered by Dell, HP and even Intel itself, Acer chairman JT Wang said on Wednesday. He fully expects these systems, combined with longer battery life, to become a major trend but believes Dell and HP have 'spoiled' the segment by dropping the prices of regular notebooks to $399, discouraging shoppers from picking up the more portable systems. Meizu M8 app store to become reality this month?
Now that Meizu is setting the M8 up with some new firmware and further turning its back on the handset's KIRFish origins, how about an app store? Apparently that's exactly what's happening, as the following video will attest. Not too many details here -- it's called MyStore, and the company is planning to split revenue with developers 30 / 70. The store is currently being tested internally, and with any luck it should see the light of day as a part of the new firmware release later this month. Targus debuts ACP51USZ laptop docking station with video
Well, it's not quite as seamless as something like Zemno's $500 DeskBook Pro docking station, but Targus' new ACP51USZ model is a good deal cheaper, and will likely get the job done just fine for most folks (with a few exceptions). That includes giving you a reasonable four USB 2.0 ports (two suitable for charging devices), a single DVI port for your monitor, an Ethernet port, and a pair of 3.5mm audio jacks for speakers, headphones, or a microphone -- all of which connect to your laptop with a single USB cable. Unfortunately, this one won't work (or at least be fully functional) with Mac or Linux, but it is compatible with Windows 7, XP and Vista, and it's available right now for $159.99.

iPhone hits Israel after midnight tonight
Apple tonight will officially introduce the iPhone into Israel, ending two years of delay and chasing thousands of sales of jailbroken/unlocked/grey market iPhones in the country.
The device officially launches in Israel at midnight on Wednesday, “with a party set to last through the night,” according to local reports.
Two networks will offer the iPhone: Cellcom and Pelephone, hosts of tonight’s iPhone launch do (along with iDigital).
Sales begin at one minute after midnight, with purchasers required to visit specific sales points if they want to pick one up.

Apple files for new 'Think Different' trademark
The US Patent and Trademark Office has published a new Apple trademark application, covering the company's "Think Different" marketing slogan. Originally introduced in 1997, the slogan formed the heart of a campaign tying Apple to current and historical celebrities, such as Albert Einstein, Bob Dylan, John Lennon, Mahatma Gandhi and Pablo Picasso. Ralph de la Vega promises fix for San Francisco and Manhattan coverage, plans to 'address' heaviest data users

MSI rolls out Wind Top AE2020 all-in-one in the UK
MSI's Wind Top AE2220 may have just started shipping 'round these parts a few weeks ago, but it looks like the company is already set to drop another model on the UK. While it remains mostly identical in appearance, the new Wind Top AE2020 scales things back a bit with a slightly smaller, lower resolution 20-inch, 1,600 x 900 display -- though you do still get the same multitouch functionality as its larger counterpart. Otherwise, you can expect to get an Ion chipset paired with a 2.1GHz Pentium T4300 processor, along with a standard 3GB of RAM, a 320GB hard drive, a DVD burner, and Windows 7 for an OS, among other standard all-in-one fare. Apple stock slide no cause for concern, analyst cautions
Investors should not panic as a result of recent Apple stock slides, says Broadpoint AmTech analyst Brian Marshall. The stock has fallen from a record October high to below $200, and as of this writing sits at approximately $193. iPhone hits Israel after midnight tonight
Apple tonight will officially introduce the iPhone into Israel, ending two years of delay and chasing thousands of sales of jailbroken/unlocked/grey market iPhones in the country.
The device officially launches in Israel at midnight on Wednesday, “with a party set to last through the night,” according to local reports.
Two networks will offer the iPhone: Cellcom and Pelephone, hosts of tonight’s iPhone launch do (along with iDigital).
Sales begin at one minute after midnight, with purchasers required to visit specific sales points if they want to pick one up.

HP slip confirms new Intel CPUs, Radeons
A leaked document from HP has confirmed some roadmap details for both Intel and AMD. As part of a plan to update its all-in-one PCs with a new Pavilion model in April, the company says it expects to use dual-core Core i3 and i5 desktop processors and reiterates their key features. The Core i5 will have Turbo Boost to shut down some cores and overclock others and will also have hardware acceleration of AES encryption; Core i3 goes without but is based on the same architecture.

AT&T throws out more threats against high bandwidth iPhone users
AT&T made more threatening remarks aimed at iPhone users Wireless data hogs who use too much "audio and video streaming" today. AT&T Wireless CEO Ralph de la Vega told attendees at a UBS conference in New York

Foxit busts out ebook store for eSlick owners
It's been a season of e-readers, that's for sure and while Foxit is a smaller player in the scene as compared to the Nook or the Kindle, it's got some news of its own to boast about today. That's right, Foxit's launching an online bookstore all its own. The aptly named eSlick Store has been launched in partnership with Fictionwise LLC (a company which is rather interestingly owned by Barnes & Noble), and currently contains about 60,000 books. Apple is 'gatekeeper' for mobile game devs success, developers say
Apple has rapidly become the gatekeeper for success in the games market, according to games developers speaking during a DiscoveryBeat event in San Frnacisco.
Not bad for a company that maybe three short years ago was characterised as having little footprint in the games market.
Backflip Studios chief executive, Julian Farrior, stressed the point: “A great product and a great relationship with Apple is really the killer combination - so find someone who works at Apple, a cousin or someone.”

iPods and external drives dominate Amazon's Xmas wish-lists worldwide
iPods and external hard drives seem to be the gifts of choice this season, with Amazon’s recently-compiled lists of the top five most wished for electronics products by country between November 15-30 confirming Apple’s grabbed a place under the tree.
The top five lists also feature LG's 55-Inch 1080 Wireless high definition TV and Samsung's S5230 Star touchscreen smartphone, but Apple's iPod touch, Western Digital Elements' 1 Terabyte Desktop external Hard Drive and Epson's MultiPhoto Colorio Printer make frequent appearances.

iTunes Europe chief talks file-sharing with the BBC
Some slight insights into how Apple’s iTunes team thinks this morning within a BBC interview with Apple’s senior director of iTunes Europe, Oliver Schusser, who maintains the mantra that the music service isn’t competing with other services, but with file-sharing - and thinks it’s doing a pretty good job.
“Our number one challenge for the sixth year in a row is to continue to convince people that it is better to get content in the legal way that actually steal it from the internet. That's really what's driving us to make iTunes better and to have more content and offer exclusive content,” he reveals.

Apple's notebooks drive Quanta's quarter, as PC makers enter laptop price war
Apple’s move to update its MacBook range has given a strong cash boost to manufacturing partner, Quanta, reports this morning claim.
Quanta actually shifted fewer notebooks than it had in previous months in November, when it shipped 3.8 million units. Yet the, "increased proportion of Apple models, which had higher selling prices, as well as strong all-in-one PC and consumer electronics shipments helped the company's November revenues reach a new high," says Digitimes.
The company achieved consolidated revenues of NT$93.3 billion (US$2.88 billion) for November 2009, the highest monthly figure on record and up 8.5% on month and 36.6% on year.

UStream Live Video Broadcaster now available for iPhone...legitimately
It looks like the Knocking Live Video (which we're told is due for an update next week btw) App approval has let open the floodgates for streaming video apps in the iPhone. Apple tablet set to hit March/April 2010 - Oppenheimer
Apple’s tablet plans are accelerating toward a March/April launch, according to reports crossing the wire this morning.
Citing checks, Oppenheimer analyst Yair Reiner this morning informed clients that Apple is going to begin production of the not-yet announced device in February, which implies launch in late March or April.

Apple Tablet: Produktionsstart angeblich im Februar
Der Oppenheimer-Analyst Yair Reiner macht das Apple-Tablet einmal mehr zum Thema. Laut Informationen aus Zuliefererkreisen soll Apple bereits im Febraur mit der Produktion eines Tablet PC mit 10" Bildschirmdiagonale starten. Die Markteinführung prognostiziert Reiner wenn alles glatt läuft dann für März oder April.
Als zusätzlicher Schwerpunkt neben den uns vom iPod touch und iPhone bekannten Inhalten werden E-Books und digitale Zeitschriften erwartet. Apple soll den Verlagen gegenüber mit deutlich besseren Konditionen als Amazon aufwarten können und dementsprechend bei E-Books für einen enormen Popularitätsschub sorgen. Reiner rechnet mit 1 bis 1,5 Millionen verkauften Tablet pro Quartal bei einem Stückpreis von rund 1000 US-Dollar.

Olympus E-P2 ships to stores
Without fanfare, Olympus today began quietly shipping the E-P2. The Micro Four Thirds camera is considered a premium improvement on the E-P1 and brings continuous autofocus, aperture and shutter control in 720p movie recording, new software filters and improved attachments such as a more detailed electronic viewfinder for the hotshoe (the VF-2) and a stereo microphone adapter (the EMA-1).

Apple to resurrect 'Think Different' campaign for tablet?
We have noted that the new 21.5 and 27-inch iMac packaging has the "Macintosh. Think Different' moniker inside it, below the specifications. In previous Macintosh packaging, Apple's website URL is printed below the specifications list.
Today we find out, that on December 8, 2009, the US Patent & Trademark Office published Apple's new trademark application for Think Different under application 77882684.
Apple's application makes note that Think Different was used as early as September 28, 1997. In 1997 there wasn't an iPod and this may be one of the main reasons for Apple's new trademark application for Think Different. However, Apple'

AT&T: mobile data controls will abide by net neutrality

Yi Cui, Forscher an der Stanford University, hat eine Batterie entworfen, die ziemlich günstig herzustellen ist und aus Papier, das mit einer Tinte aus Nanotubes aus Kohlenstoff und Nanosilberdrähten bedruckt ist besteht. Die Energie wird schnell genug abgegeben, um auch als Autobatterie zu taugen, außerdem sinkt auch das Gewicht um 20 %. Quanta dank Apple mit Rekordumsätzen

NVIDIA shows its 3D Blu-ray readiness in run-up to CES, Acer demos 120Hz LCD
We recently got a chance to check out NVIDIA's 3D Blu-ray ecosystem, and while we're sure we'll be all 3D Blu-ray'd out by the time CES is over, it was our first chance to see the new tech in action, and it seems pretty raring to go. Specifically we got to check out a movie film (we can't say which for legal reasons) on a fancy new upcoming Acer LCD (the 24-inch G245, pictured above) that does 120Hz and can be synced with NVIDIA's 3D shutter-based glasses. The 3D looked just fine, on par with other movies we've seen from NVIDIA in the past, and close to what we've seen in theaters, with the exception being that this is being delivered on a backwards-compatible, consumer-friendly Blu-ray disc. 3D Blu-ray is encoded in a new MVC-AVC format, which passes through a regular 1080p video

IEEE arbeitet an Spezifikation für Gigabit-WLAN

Apple tablet due March, to get Kindle-killer book deal?
Apple's often-rumored tablet device has been narrowed down to a specific production timeframe and could land a deadly blow against Amazon's Kindle reader through a revenue deal, according to an unusually detailed research note from Oppenheimer analyst Yair Reiner. Investigations into Apple's supply network claim the widely reported 10-inch, multi-touch device will be put into mass production in February with a likely launch target of March or April. As many as 1 million will be made every month, according to the sources.

Apple hat die Hörproben-Funktion im iTunes Store verbessert. Bisher mussten Kunden jeden Titel eines Album extra anwählen, um eine 30 Sekunden lange Hörprobe zu hören. UStream Live Video Broadcaster now available for iPhone...legitimately

Apple tablet set to hit March/April 2010 - Oppenheimer
Apple’s tablet plans are accelerating toward a March/April launch, according to reports crossing the wire this morning.

VEVO takes over from YouTube for music videos
YouTube late Tuesday unveiled a long-in-development project meant to drive music videos. VEVO provides a larger, streamlined approach to artists' videos than YouTube and organizes their content by more logical categories, such as by the genre or by channels. Apple's notebooks drive Quanta's quarter, as PC makers enter laptop price war
Apple’s move to update its MacBook range has given a strong cash boost to manufacturing partner, Quanta, reports this morning claim.
Quanta actually shifted fewer notebooks than it had in previous months in November, when it shipped 3.8 million units. Yet the, "increased proportion of Apple models, which had higher selling prices, as well as strong all-in-one PC and consumer electronics shipments helped the company's November revenues reach a new high," says Digitimes.
The company achieved consolidated revenues of NT$93.3 billion (US$2.88 billion) for November 2009, the highest monthly figure on record and up 8.5% on month and 36.6% on year.

iPods and external hard drives seem to be the gifts of choice this season, with Amazon’s recently-compiled lists of the top five most wished for electronics products by country between November 15-30 confirming Apple’s grabbed a place under the tree.

iTunes Europe chief talks file-sharing with the BBC
Some slight insights into how Apple’s iTunes team thinks this morning within a BBC interview with Apple’s senior director of iTunes Europe, Oliver Schusser, who maintains the mantra that the music service isn’t competing with other services, but with file-sharing - and thinks it’s doing a pretty good job.
“Our number one challenge for the sixth year in a row is to continue to convince people that it is better to get content in the legal way that actually steal it from the internet. That's really what's driving us to make iTunes better and to have more content and offer exclusive content,” he reveals.

Apple is 'gatekeeper' for mobile game devs success, developers say
Apple has rapidly become the gatekeeper for success in the games market, according to games developers speaking during a DiscoveryBeat event in San Frnacisco.
Not bad for a company that maybe three short years ago was characterised as having little footprint in the games market.

Adobe hat eine Sicherheitsaktualisierung für den Flash Player 10 veröffentlicht. First production Pandora case has been assembled
Pandora fans are definitely partying tonight. MacBook inhabits a Linksys router after ill-advised casemod
Apple products are known far and wide for their design. Linksys products, on the other hand, are not. That's why this latest laptop mod strikes us as a little odd. When a technically-proficient gentleman named Tyler wanted to get his hands on "a working, genuine" Mac as cheaply as possible, he did what any self-respecting (and frugal) geek would do: he scrounged New Egg and eBay for MacBook parts. Magic Mouse: The Missing Product
All users who have been trying to purchase a standalone Magic Mouse ended up with the same conclusion, there is none available. The only chance to get one would be to order it directly from the online Apple Store. Other distribution channels never received any units to be sold. According to several sources and reports, things should no improve over the coming weeks. In New York, it is not possible to get one in any of the Apple Retail Store, even the online Store is now indicating a 7 to 10 days delay for shipping the Magic Mouse. Apple can not get enough units produced to be sold as single product, and most likely keep its stocks for feeding the production of iMac as the Magic Mouse is part of the package. So, this could be the sign that Apple is selling iMac at a higher than expected level.

Gigabit Wi-Fi in 2012
As the current wireless network format 802.11n is now officially validated, the Wi-Fi Alliance announced to be working on the next generation Wi-Fi. Several technologies are being evaluated. The first one is the easiest one to develop as it will simply benefit from the current hardware by using 3x3 connections simultaneously on 3 channels, leading to a theoretical transfer speed of 450 Mbits/s with the current frequencies.The second option requires more in-depth evolution. Planned for December 2012, it should reach Gigabit/s and potentially later on 10 Gbits/s. To obtain such results, the format 802.11 ac will use simultaneously channels with large bandwidth, moving from the current 20MHz-wide channels to 40, 80 or even 160 MHz. One should not forget that for avoiding saturation and following regulations, most improvement will be done in the current 5 GHz frequency band. Nokia closes flagship Regent Street shop as Apple retail's star continues to shine
Nokia is shutting down its posh Regent Street shop following its failure to grab the hearts and minds of consumers.
The company apparently spent £4 million on the shop, which aimed to spread Nokia's brand and message at the hordes of Apple consumers at the flagship Regent Street store on the other side of the road.
On its opening two years ago, Simon Ainslie, Managing Director Nokia UK commented, "In championing our brand, Nokia Regent Street will be dynamic, original and beautifully designed. The store will provide world-class customer service and deliver a unique experience enhancing our customer's lifestyles."

TechCrunch guides Apple's purchase price of Lala down to $17 million
Since the purchase of Lala late last week by Apple, the topic of discussion is how much Apple paid for it and what they plan to do with the music streaming company. We heard yesterday from Peter Kafka at Media Memo that the price was $80 million and that Warner music alone got $10 million of their investment back.

Five big publishers officially announce their "iTunes for Magazines"
The battle for the future of publishing is on once again - the last time we saw war like this was at the advent of desktop publishing - today, five major publishers confirmed the last few weeks of rumour with the announcement of a joint venture to develop an ‘iTunes/Hulu for magazines’, a digital content storefront and publications prepped to view on digital devices.
As noted by MacRumors, Condé Nast, Hearst, Meredith, News Corporation and Time Inc. today jointly announced the new initiative, saying the aim of the plan is “fourfold”, as follows:

Google Chrome for Mac (beta) available now
Google has today released the Mac beta of its Google Chrome browser, though this release is not feature-identical with the existing Windows version. For instance, extensions aren't available to Mac users(yet). Google also released a Linux Beta as well.
The company promises its browser will run websites and applications at “lightning speed”. Initial low impact testing suggests the browser to be relatively stable on the Mac.
In a move perhaps borrowed from Apple’s Safari, or Opera, you can also visit your favourite websites easily from the New Tab page. When you open a new tab, the sites you visit most often are readily available.

Apple updates Airport client software/silences loud Superdrives
Apple released Airport Client Update 2009-002 today fixing some minor issues in Snow Leopard's wireless access software. A restart is required.
Update: Apple also released MacBook Pro EFI 1.8 firmware update for MacBook Pro 5,1 and 5,2. The update will require subsequent installation of Superdrive Update 3.0 which will quiet the DVD drive during startup and on wake from sleep. ***ALSO BEWARE OF THE LOUD BEEP DURING THE UPDATE***

Pandora sets its sights on in-car music streaming
Pandora has already come a considerable way from its rather modest beginnings, but it looks like the company unsurprisingly has some even grander ambitions for the near future, including a variety of options for in-car music streaming. That word comes straight from Pandora's Chief Technology Officier, Tom Conrad, who told attendees at the SF Music Tech Summit that the company is now working with various car manufacturers (including Ford) to better integrate Pandora music streaming into vehicles. Samsung teases Bada at event, questions still outnumber answers
We've just come back from the Samsung Bada mobile platform launch event in London, and frankly the presentation was no more than an app developer and investor magnet -- no rendering of a new UI, no hands-on opportunity and no direct answers regarding the hardware. Every time an Android phone launches, a stopwatch quietly starts ticking, because we all know it's just a matter of time before the thing gets rooted. This time around, it's a big one: it appears that the mighty Droid has fallen to the hands of hackers looking to drop whatever they please onto the phone's firmware -- and anyone enjoying Cyanogen's works over in the HTC world understands full well the benefits of being able to do this. We'll hold off on cracking open the bubbly until we start to see some practical benefits to the root, but this is a stellar way to start if it's legit and functional.

Nokia's early 2010 "grim," N97 losing sales
Nokia's first half of 2010 will be an uphill struggle without a viable device to beat its rivals, a research note by MKM Partners analyst Tero Kuittinen warns today. Citing checks, he notes that N97 sales have continued decline since the smartphone's peak of 2 million this summer and that its reworked cousin, the N97 mini, has been "soft" from the outset. Apple on Tuesday released updates to address optical noise created by its line of MacBook computers, including EFI Firmware updates for its MacBook EFI Firmware Update 1.4 [3.14MB] and MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.8 [3.36MB] lines and a SuperDrive 3.0 Firmware Update [18.35MB] for iMacs and Mac minis. ATi bringt Radeon HD 4860 mit GDDR5
Bereits seit Tagen gehen über Internetseiten in Asien hier und da Berichte, dass eine neue Grafikkarte von ATi im Umlauf ist.
