Review: BlackBerry Storm2
The first BlackBerry Storm was at first held up as the savior for carriers without the iPhone, but over time it became clear RIM's entry was short of this goal: an aging OS, no Wi-Fi and a misconceived push-down touchscreen meant it often didn't please either would-be iPhone buyers or BlackBerry veterans. The Storm2 addresses some of these features in a major way, but we'll find out in our review whether it's enough to change people's minds.

Nikon Coolpix S70 unboxing and hands-on
Previous reviews haven't been all smiles, but we're finally able to pick up Nikon's Coolpix S70 and see for ourselves. On form factor alone, it's a pretty alluring build -- even the faux leather front is tastefully done. While the tap-to-focus feature is a nice addition, we're less enthused about the OLED screen's viewing angles when outside -- and seeing as we've go no other way to see the memories we're framing, that's pretty disappointing. We're still putting it through its paces before we dole out full impressions, but in the meantime, enjoy our unboxing and hands-on photos.

Apple buys Lala
The thing is rather rare at Apple. After having purchased Semi Pa, Apple has bought the start-up Lala that was founded 4 years ago. This company developed technologies that allow access to its music anywhere and on any device as long as you have access to Internet. Difficult to say that what Apple needs from them, but it is certainly must be very important for future developments.

Direct Insight debuts SODIMM-sized, ARM-based computer-on-a-module
Well, it may not exactly be the computer everyone's been pining for, but those that have dreamed of an ARM Cortex-A8-based computer on a SODIMM module now finally one to call their own. That comes in the form of Direct Insight's new TRITON-TX51, which outdoes the Nokia N900 with an 800GHz Cortex-A8 processor, along with Freescale's i.MX515 system-on-a-chip, 128MB DDR400 RAM, 128MB of NAND flash, and a touchscreen controller that can drive screens at resolutions up to 1,280 x 768. Don't freak out or anything. But all that time you spent building a DIY in-wall USB charger may have been for naught. Of course, you've gained a useful learning experience and potentially gotten a lesson in the dangers of electricity, but you could have simply ordered this TruPower UCS outlet from FastMac, which packs the same two USB charging ports as the DIY outlet, along with two standard power outlets for your other power-hungry devices. Apple buys Lala for a song
So the New York Times' Brad Stone seems to have the inside scoop on the Lala purchase reported earlier by Bloomberg and just after by CNET. It looks like Apple has bought Lala, not to bring their platform to iTunes, but more as a piecemeal purchase to bring their engineers and experitise with cloud computing into the iTunes music (Movies? TV?) group.
Here are some reasons for that: Lala's business has to get shut down. Apple won't be able to use any of the current licensing schemes that Lala's customers have signed up for.

Post Line: nie mehr über Kabel stolpern

Schön wärs, wenn wir das manchmal notwendige Übel Kabel nicht mehr in nervenaufreibender Bastelei mit winzigen Nägelchen an die Fussleiste hämmern müssten. Oft bleibt sowieso nichts anderes übrig, als die Stolperfalle quer durch den Raum zu ziehen, weil ein flexibler Einsatz gefordert ist. Wie gerne hätten wir Chen Ju Weis "Post Line"-Kabel: es ist flach, kommt von der Rolle und wird ratzfatz an den Boden oder die Wand geklebt. Falls es irgendwann nicht mehr haftet, wischt man das Kabel einfach ab, und schon ist es wieder wie neu! Toll, aber leider nur ein Konzept.Gallery:

Was wäre, wenn die serielle Bildübertragung nicht wäre und ein Bild nicht in Zeilen zerlegt und wieder zusammengesetzt würde, um auf einer Mattscheibe aufzuleuchten? Gebhard Sengmüller verdrahtet 2500 Fotowiderstände auf der Senderseite mit 2500 Glühbirnen auf der Empfängerseite und erzeugt so ein Bild mit 2500 Pixel, also 50x50 Pixel, was natürlich keine Traumauflösung ist. Navigons MobileNavigator läuft jetzt auch auf dem iPod touch
Die im App Store erhältlichen Navigationspakete des deutschen Herstellers Navigon sind jetzt auch mit dem iPod touch kompatibel.
Bislang ließ sich die Software aufgrund einer internen Beschränkung auf das iPhone nicht auf dem iPod touch installieren. Da aber inzwischen neben diversen Hacks mit dem TomTom Car Kit auch eine "offizielle" GPS-Erweiterung für den iPod touch erhältlich ist, macht diese Öffnung durchaus Sinn. Der iPod lässt sich im Fahrzeug damit nicht mehr nur als Musiklieferant, sondern auch als Navigationsgerät benutzen.

Intel's Larrabee graphics processor delayed, downsized to mere software development platform
Well. NVIDIA has to be loving this. Intel has announced today that not only is its Larrabee graphics chip delayed, that chip which promised to usher in a new era of post-GPU computing, but that it's been downgraded to a "software development platform." Intel isn't even saying what that "software development" will be aimed at, though we have to assume it would be some future version of the hybrid GPU / CPU chip. As to when the kit itself might arrive is anybody's guess, Intel is merely saying "next year." Meanwhile we can look forward to Intel's first example of a GPU / CPU

Laut All Things Digital hat Apple den Online-Musikdienst Lala übernommen. Bei Lala können die Nutzer per Streaming direkt übers Internet auf acht Millionen Songs zugreifen. Welche Absichten hinter diesem Deal stecken und wieviel Geld geflossen ist, weiss noch keiner so genau. Lala ist zwar kürzlich eine Partnerschaft mit Google eingegangen, ist aber nach wie vor ein keine große Firma. Wahrscheinlich ist daher, dass Apple in erster Linie an Lalas Technologie und Team Interesse hat.

Die Tools zur Budgetverwaltung im App Store sind mittlerweile Legion, beispielsweise AceBudget, Budget, BudgetCare, Mein BudgeT, MyBudget, Cha-Ching oder iCompta. Das weiss man auch bei http://noidentity.ch. Die Enwickler von Moneybook versichern glaubwürdig, viele Finanz-/Budget-Apps gekauft und ausgetestet zu haben. Ihr Fazit: Vielfach wurde versucht, die Funktionalität einer Desktop-App in eine App "zu quetschen", die aber eben ohne Riesenscreen, Pull-downs und Maus auskommen soll und will.
Voilà, hier kommt MoneyBook, eine betont simple und dabei elegante Budgetverwaltung. Sie gestattet wirklich mit wenigen Fingertipps neue Ausgaben zu erfassen (im "App auf und zu"-Machen) und unterscheidet dabei zwischen einmaligen und "Wiederkehrenden Ausgaben", zu denen jeweils auf Wunsch Notizen eingegeben werden können. The Apple Store US has updated the BTO available for the Mac Pro single CPU:
It is now possible to get a high-end CPU clocked at 3.33 GHz, however the price of this option might not be the best marketing factor. Other new BTO, one can now get 2 TB HD. Such options should be propagated to other Apple Store worldwide.

WSJ confirms Apple purchase of Lala
Well that's that, apparently. Although this story has evolved quite a bit over the day, according to Peter Kafka over at All Things Digital, Apple has indeed coughed up the dough for music streaming service Lala. If you believe what you read in the report (and you probably can, Kafka tends to be a straight shooter), Apple's snapping up the company for what will amount to a bargain-basement price possibly less than $.50 on the dollar. However, Kafka says at least one source claims his valuation of the deal is off, but we'll have to wait for some official word before we know for sure. If this turns out to all be true, the lingering question is still about Apple's reasoning behind the purchase -- is the company after a particular technology

Apple buyout of Lala a done deal?
Apple has already cemented its deal to buy Lala, multiple sources said Friday evening. One tip claimed the web-based audio startup not only agreed to a deal quickly but voluntarily offered itself to Apple through iTunes VP Eddy Cue due to short-term doubts about Lala's profitability. Apple itself purportedly sees Lala as a resource grab and is concerned more with getting engineers experienced in streaming music than for the actual Lala service.

Apple buys Lala for a song
So the New York Times' Brad Stone seems to have the inside scoop on the Lala purchase reported earlier by Bloomberg and just after by CNET. It looks like Apple has bought Lala, not to bring their platform to iTunes, but more as a piecemeal purchase to bring their engineers and experitise with cloud computing into the iTunes music (Movies? TV?) group.
Here are some reasons for that: Lala's business has to get shut down. Apple won't be able to use any of the current licensing schemes that Lala's customers have signed up for.

It looks like we weren't the first to think that the DigiCube MIDPhone-50 looked awfully familiar. The Psion Series 5 PDA, you may recall, featured the same sliding-clamshell design back in 1995 -- and its still a beloved gadget among many folks overseas (though it never really caught on here). Apple Inc. faces patent abuse over the iPhone's digital camera
Apple faces a court room struggle against IP firm, St. Clair Intellectual Property Consultants, which has filed a lawsuit claiming the computer company has violated several of its digital camera patents.The case was filed in October in the US District Court in Delaware and has reached the scheduling conference stage, which begins January 13 2010. Steve Jobs advised on the OLPC project, MS tried to Thwart
The OLPC project hasn't been the success that Nicolas Negroponte, its creator, had hoped. That's not because of the lack of good advice that Apple's CEO gave along the way.
Interestingly, Jobs did advise founder Nicholas Negroponte at several points along the design process even though his advice wasn't well received..
"I got an email from Steve Jobs (the night the laptop was revealed) he said you can't build it for a hundred dollars, and my answer was oh yes I can," Negroponte said as part of a lecture at the University of Pennsylvania, Thursday night.
It turns out he couldn't and he had to double the price

Apple hit by $21.7 million patent infringement charge on “pre-snoop” technology
Apple has received a bit of a setback in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, where it has been found guilty of infringing a patent held by OPTi Inc.
The court yesterday issued the final judgment in the patent infringement action between OPTi Inc and Apple Inc. This suit centred around a patent on “pre-snoop” technology. This apparently is relates to U.S. patent No. 6,405,291, entitled “Predictive Snooping of Cache Memory for Master-Initiated Accesses”.
Apple apparently infringed claims 73, 74 and 88 of U.S. Patent No. 6.405,291 (the “291 patent”); OPTi has been given approval to recover from Apple a reasonable royalty of $19 million in actual damages. The court awarded an additional $2.7 million in pre-judgment interest for a total reward of $21.7 million.

NPD: MacBook bestselling laptop, iMac bestselling desktop
According to data collected by The NPD Group, Apple’s 13-inch MacBook was the top-selling laptop and the 21.5-inch iMac was the top-selling desktop in the retail channels during the month of October, GigaOM reports. Apple's products are expected to do well in November and December as holiday shopping numbers come in.
That's not a big surprise when you look at Amazon's bestseller lists:

Apple in advanced talks to buy Lala. Streaming music for iTunes?
According to Bloomberg, Apple is in advanced talks to buy online streaming music company Lala.
The terms of the deal for privately held Lala weren’t known. The people declined to be identified because talks are still in progress. Investors in Palo Alto, California-based Lala include Boston-based Bain Capital Ventures and Ignition Partners in Bellevue, Washington.
The Lala service, which debuted last year, lets users listen to any song on the site once for free. Customers can then opt to buy the track for 10 cents and liste

FTC investigating Intel-Nvidia dispute
Bloomberg is already starting to get some mileage out fo their Businessweek purchase. Today Arik Hessendahl reports for the new company that Intel and Nvidia's squabbles will now be looked at by the US Federal Trade Commission.
The FTC is trying to determine whether a lawsuit filed by Intel earlier this year is an effort to disrupt Nvidia’s business, one person said.
Intel sued Nvidia in February of this year after negotiations broke down over terms of a 2004 agreement that gave Nvidia access to some of Intel’s technology. Nvidia counter-sued a month later, accusing Intel of breach of contract.

Intel delays Larrabee GPU, aims for developer "kit" in 2010
Intel is delaying the launch of its much-anticipated Larrabee standalone graphics chip for PCs. While the company on Friday only admitted that its Larrabee discrete graphics chip project was behind schedule and that it would initially only appear as a software development platform "next year," analyst suggest that the company may be missing its performance targets for the much-anticipated graphics chip.

FCC may open set-top boxes to Internet, scrap CableCARD
The FCC signaled its intent to advance the state of set-top TV boxes this week with a quietly published rulemaking notice. A request for comment (PDF) on "video device innovation" has noted that the CableCARD standard has failed to create the open digital environment for TV that the FCC had planned and that it wants input on how to spur development of replacement technology that would bring Internet access and other features to the traditionally closed-off cable and satellite TV realms.
