PDF tool supports, Excel conversion, Office files, OS X 10.6
Recosoft has announced PDF2Office Professional v5.0 for the Mac. The PDF converter tool can recreate PDF documents in Microsoft's Word as well as PowerPoint and RTF, retaining the construction and layout of the original. It retains paragraphs, applies styles and regroups graphic elements. It also extracts images and creates tables. All the formatting conversion is done automatically, requiring nothing of the user.

Rokland intros BearExtender n3 Wi-Fi range extender
Rokland Technologies has introduced BearExtender n3, a wireless adapter designed for Apple computers. The device pairs a 700 mW Wi-Fi radio with an external antenna claimed to increase wireless range by up to four times the typical distance experienced with a 32mW AirPort card. It features plug-and-play compatibility, connecting via USB, and supports 802.11b, 802.11g and 802.11n networks.

British Library packs its least requested items into new, robot-operated facility in Leeds
The British Library's just taken the wraps off a new facility up in Leeds where they'll now house some lesser used items (things like patent specs and Martin Amis' diner receipts). The new digs are a £26 million (that's about $43 million) building in West Yorkshire controlled by seven robot operators capable of pulling items and taking them to a retrieval area when they've been requested by librarians. Apple posts first Snow Leopard Java update [u]
(Updated with Leopard patch info) Apple has released a first official Java update for Mac OS X Snow Leopard. Little information is available, but the patch does push Java SE 6 to v1.60_17, and include various "reliability, security and compatibility" fixes. Downloaders must be running Mac OS X 10.6.2 or later.

BlackBerry undercuts iPhone with AT&T 50% off deal
RIM hoped to fuel its BlackBerry holiday sales with a major sales promo at AT&T. The deal cuts the price of virtually all BlackBerry handsets in half, even including newer models like the Bold 9700 and Curve 8520. As a result, the smartphones will cost as little as $100 and $50 respectively after both a rebate and a two-year contract.

Sony's PlayStation marks 15th anniversary
1994. A good year for many reasons, but for gamers it's best remembered as the year Sony shook things up in a big way with its original PlayStation game console (on this day in Japan, at least -- the rest of us had to wait 'til the fall of 1995). While Sega got a slight head start with its Saturn, the Sony PlayStation's lower price and strong launch line-up of games quickly vaulted it to the top of the pack, and helped bring in the slightly older audience that 3D0 and others tried and failed to capture. Nokia slashing smartphone lineup in half for 2010
One of the natural side effects of being the largest maker of cellphones in the world is that you produce a lot of different models -- a lot -- which makes it way too easy for product planning, engineering, and marketing to all have corners cut for even the most important devices in the herd. Nokia seems to be coming to terms with that, though, announcing that it'll scale back from "around 20" smartphones released this year to roughly a half of that in 2010, allowing it to give each phone the TLC it so desperately needs. Sega launches Super Monkey Ball 2 for iPhone, iPod touch
Sega has released Super Monkey Ball 2, a sequel to its earlier game for the iPhone and iPod touch. Players rely on touch and accelerometer controls to roll a monkey through an obstacle course, collecting bananas along the way. The game offers four monkeys to choose from, and 115 different levels.

Canon patenting touchscreen DSLR
Future Canon DSLRs could be some of the first to switch to touchscreens for much of their input, a newly unearthed patent filing shows. The application shows an interchangeable lens camera that would use both a touchscreen and an optical viewfinder but which would implement a unique system to avoid accidental input on the touch display immediately below. By setting a determining which eye would use the viewfinder, the system could partly disable the touchscreen to prevent accidental input while still maintaining some level of control.

Motorola invests in Anywhere Multitouch technology
It's been awhile since we heard anything from Sensitive Objects, the French firm that developed Anywhere Multitouch, the platform that uses piezoelectric sensors to extend touch sensitivity beyond the display to the entire device. Well, we thought it was a pretty sweet idea -- and apparently Motorola did as well. Intel TRIM-enable Firmware for SSD X25-M 34 nm Available ... Again

You will then need to burn the disc image with the Disk utility, then reboot while pressing the "C" key then follow instructions. The procedure works on all Intel-based Mac. BOSS eBand Audio Player lets you rock along to its tinny accompaniment
Are you sick of the guitar player in your life anachronistically asking you to reset the needle on their turntable so they can rock out to the Electric Light Orchestra? Maybe the eBand JS-8 from BOSS will shut them up. The unit (which doesn't float in the air casting reflections upon jeans, as the horrible Photoshop above might suggest) can play tracks off of a USB stick or SD card, with the ability to change the pitch and tempo of songs, as well as some audio engineering magic to kill the guitar or vocal parts. Sony and FIFA team up to make the World Cup 3D
It's no secret that plenty of companies are hoping that 2010 will be the year of 3D, and it looks like Sony has now gotten a big boost by lining up a partnership with one of the biggest events of the year: the FIFA World Cup. As the pair have announced today, the new arrangement will see at least 25 World Cup matches produced in 3D using Sony's 3D cameras, which will be viewable through a variety of means. Google, Microsoft help judge phone camera quality
Google and Microsoft have simultaneously joined the Camera Phone Image Quality Initiative in a bid to drive up the quality of handsets. Along with existing partners, the two are helping to create a rating system that will judge cameras on phones through factors beyond just resolution, such as the actual sharpness of the picture, the amount of visible noise, color reproduction and lens artifacts like distortion or chromatic effects ("purple fringing").

Honda's P-NUT concept is big on puns, short on realism

Nokia plans to cut smartphone line in half
Nokia told those in an Internet broadcast that it plans to produce half as many smartphones in 2010 as it did this year. The company is scaling back the number of models to avoid "unnecessary differentiation" and ship multiple phones with only small changes between them. Those models that are left should get more attention as a result.

Chinese auction site sells five iPhones in two weeks
An official China Unicom online auction has so far yielded extremely poor iPhone sales, according to IDG News. The carrier recently opened an iPhone storefront at Taobao.com, a site described as a Chinese equivalent of eBay. Canon patent application points to touchscreen DSLRs
Touchscreens are still something of a novelty on regular point-and-shoot cameras, but it looks like they may now already be starting to make their trek to DSLRs -- at least if a recently published patent application from Canon is any indication. Of course, a "touchscreen for a DSLR" is a bit tricky to patent on its own, so Canon is taking a slightly more unique approach: attempting to patent a touchscreen that prevents you from accidentally touching things when you hold the camera up to your face. That includes letting you register your dominant eye when you set up the camera, which will in turn automatically disable the portion of the screen more likely to be touched when you go to take a shot using the viewfinder. Comcast vows to keep Hulu intact
Hulu won't undergo a shakeup following the Comcast buyout of NBC, the cable provider said during a conference call to discuss the merger. Comcast chief operating officer Stephen Burke called Hulu's existing business model "smart and appropriate" and said there weren't any plans to change the way the streaming video site works. He points out that the split already works in Comcast's favor, as much of Hulu's content comes from basic cable and leaves out the premium channels that Comcast would want to reserve for On Demand Online.

Motorola invests in "multi-touch anywhere" creator
Motorola signaled the seriousness of its commitment to touchscreen phones this morning by investing in Sensitive Object, a developer for handheld touch devices. The deal gives Motorola access to Anywhere MultiTouch, which uses sound rather than finger electricity, pressure or optics to detect input. As expected, Comcast announced its buyout of NBC this morning, and we have a few details of interest to Engadget readers and fans of rom-coms alike. Essentially, Comcast now owns 51 percent of NBC-Universal to GE's 49 percent and will manage the entity -- leveraging the newly acquired content with their infrastructure. Epson PictureMate Show merges photo printer, frame
Epson on Thursday launched a compact photo printer market that doubles as a digital photo printer. The PictureMate Show PM 300 can print out full-color 4x6-inch prints and has a seven-inch display with 800x480 pixel resolution. There are 12 different slideshow formats, and users get a remote control for full control of the photos displayed on the screen. The printer, meanwhile, has the highest resolution in its class, at 5760x1440, and can produce a print in as little as 37 seconds.

Third-party retailers push for access to Apple EasyPay
Apple is considering making its new iPod touch-based EasyPay checkout system commercially available, a report claims. The company recently switched to the Touch from older Windows CE technology, pairing it with custom software and a case that doubles as a card reader and barcode scanner. Sources say that Apple has since been approached by a number of parties looking to license the technology, ranging from small businesses up to major retail chains and system integrators.

Siemens im vierten Quartal mit Milliardenverlust
Siemens hat im vierten Quartal seines Geschäftsjahres 2008/2009 (bis 30. September) einen Verlust von 1,06 Milliarden Euro verzeichnet. Nokia teases multi-touch Symbian interface

HTC's TouchB gets demonstrated, featurephone status confirmed (video)
This isn't going to be fun, so we'll just say it and get it over with: the HTC Touch.B isn't the updated Android smartphone we'd been hoping for. As it turns out it isn't even a smartphone, relegated to the realm of the featurephone by running Qualcomm's BrewMP OS. Full Flash support is nice, and we must say the UI has a charming, simple look to it, but it all looks a little limited, and that screen seems awfully small given the size of the phone now that it's been turned on. Intel stellt Prozessor mit 48 Kernen vor
Intel hat einen vollständig programmierbaren Prozessor mit 48 Kernen vorgestellt, der über 1,3 Milliarden Transistoren verfügt. Die CPU bezeichnet der Hersteller als "Single-Chip Cloud Computer" (SCC). Sie ist der Nachfolger des 2007 als Forschungsprojekt entstandenen "Polaris"-Prozessors, der über 80 Recheneinheiten verfügt. Eben schon angekündigt, Nokia verspricht ein neues Symbian im nächsten Jahr. Und jetzt können wir es uns schon mal ansehen. Ob sich die Aussage bewahrheitet, dass nicht das Betriebssystem, sondern das GUI das Problem ist (wie im Video nach dem Klick behauptet) ist natürlich erst an echten Geräten festzustellen, aber visuell sieht es schon mal gut aus und scheint komplett auf kapazitive Touchscreens ausgerichtet. Comcast officially buys control of NBC
Comcast today confirmed late rumors and bought a 51 percent stake in NBC Universal that gives it control of the studio. The deal sees GE maintain a 49 percent stake and receive about $6.5 billion from Comcast; NBC Universal in turn is borrowing $9.1 billion to pay GE. While the new combined company doesn't yet have a name, but Comcast has created a second division known as the Comcast Entertainment Group that will handle the content aspects of the venture.

73 Prozent der privaten Haushalte haben einen Internetzugang

Fujitsu zwittert sich mit dem LifeBook UH900 ein übergroßes Handy

Den Zwittern gehört die Zukunft. Dekt zumindest Fujitsu und verwirrt uns mit dem neuen LifeBook UH900 doch reichlich. Hätten wir nur das Bild und wüssten nicht, dass es offiziell ein UMPC ist mit Windows 7 - wir würden es auch als überproportioniertes Handy durchgehen lassen. Das würde uns sogar ausgesprochen gut gefallen mit 3,5G, 62GB SSD-Speicher und dem 5,6"-Display. Aber nun gut. Mit einer Batterielaufzeit von gerade mal drei Stunden im Sparmodus würden wir damit ja auch nicht besonders weit kommen. Microsoft Office Web Apps
Auch schon vor der Verfügbarkeit von MS-Office als App lassen sich Dokumente zumindest betrachten - mit MS-Office Web Apps. Laut Mickeysoft können die Office Web Apps mit dem Internet Explorer unter Windows Mobile 5, 6, 6.1 und 6.5 sowie mit Safari 4 auf einem iPhone 3G oder 3GS dargestellt werden. Zudem laufen sie unter Blackberry 4.x oder höher sowie Symbian mit S60-Oberfläche. Darüber hinaus unterstützen die Office Web Apps die Browser Netfront in Version 3.4, 3.5 oder höher, Opera Mobile ab Version 8.65 und Openwave 6.2, 7.0 oder neuer. Es gibt Word, Excel, PowerPoint und OneNote als Web-Applikation.
Wer Dokumente nicht nur lesen, sondern auch bearbeiten und zurückspeichern will, benötigt Office Mobile 2010, das Windows Mobile 6.5 voraussetzt. Oder er muss auf die Office App warten

Alle reden von Android, in China allerdings, genauer gesagt im IT-Zentrum Shenzen, ticken die Uhren ein bisschen anders. Und vielleicht ist der Markt für Geräte wie dieses hier, das HT560, tatsächlich noch existent. Der UMPC hat ein 5,6"-Display, läuft mit Windows XP, hat einen schnellen 1GHz-Prozessor, 16GB SSD-Speicher, zwei USB-Ports und zwei 1,3-Megapixel-Kameras. Dazu kommen Bluetooth, WiFi und GPS. [UPDATE] Store Frankfurt: Eröffnung auf Januar 2010 verschoben
Schade! Die Redaktion hatte das Auto schon betankt und die Kamera getestet, da meldet Apple den Abbruch der Eröffnung. Laut der PR-Mitteilung konnte bisher nicht alles 'perfekt' fertiggestellt werden und deswegen fällt die Eröffnung am kommenden Samstag aus. Ein neuer Termin wird nicht genannt,

AMD will Nvidia aus dem Chipsatzmarkt drängen
Nvidia hat aktuell im Chipsatzgeschäft nicht wirklich viel zu lachen. Sky-Chef Mark Williams wirft das Handtuch
Der Vorstandsvorsitzende des Bezahlfernsehsenders Sky Deutschland (vormals Premiere), Mark Williams, wird sein Amt zum 31. März 2010 abgeben. Nortels Netzwerksparte geht endgültig an Ciena

Micron-SSD mit 6-GBit-SATA soll 300 MByte/s erreichen

Im Rahmen des Tera-Scale Computer-Forschungs-Programmes hat Intel in Braunschweig eine experimentelle CPU mit 48 Prozessor-Kernen vorgeführt, die gegenüber anderen Intel-Core-Prozessoren die zehn- bis 20-fache Leistung bieten soll. Microsoft stößt Technologien zur Verwaltung von Online-Inhalten ab
Microsoft hat zwei Geschäftsbereiche an Rocket Software, ein Softwarehaus von der amerikanischen Ostküste, verkauft. Beide entwickeln und vermarkten Technologien, die die Verwaltung und Veröffentlichung von Online-Inhalten erleichtern sollen. Sie kamen Anfang 2008 mit der Übernahme des norwegischen Suchexperten "Fast Search and Transfer" (FAST) für über 1,2 Milliarden Dollar zu Microsoft. Wieviel Rocket Software für die FAST-Geschäftsbereiche Folio und Folio bezahlt hat, wurde nicht bekannt gegeben.

Microns C300 bis zu 50% schneller als bisherige SSDs
Micron hat mit der C300 eine neue SSD im 2,5-Zoll-Format vorgestellt, die bis zu 50 Prozent schneller sein soll, als die bisher schnellsten SSDs. Intels H55-Mainboard mit „Clarkdale“ gesichtet

Store Frankfurt: Eröffnung auf Januar 2010 verschoben
Schade! Die Redaktion hatte das Auto schon betankt und die Kamera getestet, da meldet Apple den Abbruch der Eröffnung. Laut der PR-Mitteilung konnte bisher nicht alles 'perfekt' fertiggestellt werden und deswegen fällt die Eröffnung am kommenden Samstag aus. Ein neuer Termin wird nicht genannt,

Bericht: Bundeskartellamt ermittelt gegen Deutsche Telekom
Das Bundeskartellamt hat Ermittlungen gegen die Deutsche Telekom eingeleitet. Medal of Honor setzt mit Afghanistan-Szenario auf Risiko

Apple-Store Frankfurt: Eröffnung verschoben!
Am 6. Dezember 2008 öffnete am Münchener Marienplatz der erste Apple Store auf deutschem Boden seine Pforten. Nahezu auf den Tag ein Jahr später sollte am 5.12.2009 eigentlich der Frankfurter Laden folgen - doch nun wurde die Eröffnung in letzter Minute verschoben.

Neuer Wirbel um Apple Tablet - Time stellt Magazin-Konzept vor

Studie: Jeder 2. surft mobil mit iPhone & Co.
Datenzugriff immer und überall - 51 Prozent der deutschen Internetnutzer surfen bereits von unterwegs mit Smartphone oder webfähigem Handy. Jeder Vierte ist dabei sogar "Heavy User" und nutzt also "häufig" mobile Services: 29% der Männer, aber nur 17% der Frauen greifen dabei sogar mehrmals die Woche auf mobile Online-Services zurück. Dies sind die Ergebnisse einer aktuellen, repräsentativen Trendbefragung von Scout24. Hoch im Kurs stehen bei den Nutzern mobiler Services vor allem News/Nachrichten (71%). Rang zwei der beliebtesten Features belegen Navigationstools (59%). Insbesondere Frauen nutzen gern die elektronischen Wegweiser (58%). Online-Shopping per Handy belegt den dritten Platz (51%).

Wie uns Apple soeben telefonisch mitteilte, musste die Eröffnung des Frankfurter Apple Stores für diesem Samstag abgesagt werden. Befragung: Welche Widgets würde man gern mobil einsetzen?
Den Namen kennt man weniger, die Anwendungen nutzen die meisten. Mobile Widgets, kleine Mini-Programme auf iPhone und Co., informieren zu jeder Zeit an jedem Ort über aktuelle Nachrichten, Stauinformationen, Wetterberichte, Restaurants und vieles mehr. Eine Befragung des Softwaredienstleisters Star Finanz zeigt jetzt: 60 Prozent der Befragten sehen Widgets als sinnvolle tagesaktuelle Informationsquelle. Besonders gefragt sind dabei Routenplaner (50%), Suchmaschinen wie google/yahoo (44%), Verkehrsinfos (38%), Mobile-Banking (33%) und Parkplatzfinder (20%).

Nokia N900 impressively demos WebGL 3D graphics
We're not sure anyone out there needs any more proof that the Nokia N900 is powerhouse, but just in case you still had doubts, check this video of a WebGL-enabled Firefox build smoothly rendering some complex 3D models on Espoo's "internet tablet with phone capabilities." It's pretty impressive stuff, especially considering WebGL is still being standardized and it hasn't gotten beyond Firefox nightlies on the desktop yet. Check it after the break.

New Mobile Radeon to Be Unveiled Early 2010
Initially planned to be released in November, their launched was postponed due to the success of the desktop Radeon HD 5xx0, so the new Mobile Radeon should be unveiled in January 2010 during the CES.

Intel to Demonstrate a 48-Cores CPU
Intel should make a demo in a near future of a 48-cores CPU. This chips would be 10 to 20 times more powerful than current commercially available CPU. This will be the first chips released on the market with so much cores in it. There are not so much details available and even the frequency of this CPU remains unknown. However, what we know is that Intel massively worked on improving interconnection of cores to improve performance while limiting saturation of the bus. Its power consumption will be reduced to 25 W in idle mode and 125 W when fully loaded. In order to improve power management, each core will be able to regulate its own clock speed depending on the work load. If Intel keeps multiplying cores on its consumer-dedicated chips at the same pace, we should have such 40+ cores CPU becoming default model within the next 10 years, except if a technology revolution makes it outdated and push the founder to investigate other ways. Time Warner lanches Clearwire-enabled WiMAX in select areas

Microsoft giving Bing Maps a 3D overhaul, tacking on apps for good measure
Google's not the only one in the game when it comes to wild mapping tech, and while Microsoft's excellent collection of bird's eye photos has never gotten it quite the attention of Google's Street View, the hope is that lasers and its much-lauded Photosynth tool can do the trick. Microsoft today caught up to Google in a significant way by expanding Bing's search features, particularly for maps. Presselite intros Twitter 360 app for iPhone 3GS
Presselite has introduced Twitter 360, an app for the iPhone 3GS that enables users to visualize their Twitter friends at nearby locations. The app utilizes GPS navigation technology and an Augmented Reality function to display user locations based on where their last tweet was posted. After selecting a tweet, a blue arrow will display the direction and distance to the tweet location. The distance is updated in real-time as users walk around.
