Black Wii gets unboxed just in time for the darkest holiday
Those lucky enough to live in Europe and the UK will soon (as in November 6th soon) be able to purchase a special edition of that black Nintendo Wii some of us have been drooling over for the past few months. Norwegian group speaks out against Amazon's e-book terms
Norway's Consumer Council, Forbrukerrådet, has spoken out against Amazon's terms-of-service regarding e-books purchased on the Kindle, as detailed in a post on the Council's website. The group's director, Hans Marius Graasvold, claims several points in the e-book agreement violate Norwegian consumer-rights laws.

RED to ship beta EPIC-X cameras, upgrades Scarlet
RED this evening provided an update on the progress of its greater-than-HD EPIC and Scarlet cameras with a beta program for the EPIC-X and a feature boost for the Scarlet. The 5K resolution EPIC-X should now be available as a "beta" test camera before the end of 2009 and, in a first stage, will give those buyers a pre-production core body and all the equipment needed to use it outside of the lens, such as CompactFlash storage, an electronic viewfinder, a mount and power. Verizon FiOS DVR tries to be an AppleTV
Verizon FiOS Mac customers might be interested in this one: Verizon is now offering a conduit for your iPhoto and iTunes to work through your FiOS DVR. Second Microsoft store draws 1,000-person lineup
Microsoft's second-ever official retail store opened to lines resembling those of Apple's, an early estimate says. More than 1,000 are believed by the OC Register to have queued up for the Mission Viejo, California opening, some of whom had entered the line as early as the previous afternoon. It's not known how long lines remained in front of the store or how floor traffic has proceeded since the debut at 10AM local time.

Remember yesterday, when one illustrious modder whipped up a head-mounted computer that featured a printed circuit board of his own design? The fabrication method he used was called direct-to-PCB Inkjet printing. Excel Software announces QuickLicense Server
Excel has introduced QuickLicense Server 1.0, an application for generating a vendor-branded floating license system. Under such a system, a server and monitor pairing keep track of protected programs. Tools in QuickLicense allow users to configure a server, observe its operations, and alter the number of purchased licenses, and well as manage the number of protected apps that can be used at a customer site.

Internet turns 40 years old
The Internet has turned 40 years old this week, with its beginnings occurring at 9pm on October 29th, 1969. On that day, engineers at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) and Stanford Research Institute (SRI) nearly 400 miles away sent data over the first two nodes. Back then, the Internet was known as Arpanet, after the US Department of Defense's Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), which commissioned its creation.

Primera has announced PTPublisher, new burning and printing software for the Mac. The app is based on the Roxio burn engine and allows users to burn or print discs through any networked Primera disc publisher. Netzstörungen bei Simyo nun behoben
Seit heute Abend vermeldet Simyo die Beseitigung der Netzstörungen, die seit rund einer Woche auftraten. HDI's laser-driven 3D HDTV hits production, should ship next year
When we first caught wind of HDI's "world's first laser-based 3D HDTV," we were cautiously hopeful that it'd be ready to go (at least as a prototype) at CES 2010. Looks like we may actually get our wish, as the company has today announced that its magical set has reached the manufacturing stage. What's it all mean? It means that the set is being fast-tracked for release in 2010, meaning that you're just months away from having stereoscopic 1,920 x 1,080 content in your living room provided there's actually any programming to view, that is. Marware launches Sport Grip cases for iPod nano 5G
Marware has launched updated Sport Grip and Sport Grip Deluxe cases for the fifth-generation iPod nano. Both cases are made of silicone, and protect a Nano's back, bottom, top and sides from scrapes and scratches, while also reducing the likelihood of slipping. Plantronics outs Voyager Pro UC targets computers
Plantronics today launched a rare Bluetooth headset aimed primarily at the desktop. The Voyager Pro UC bundles a USB Bluetooth adapter with the familiar Voyager Pro and lets any Mac or Windows PC handle calls over the wireless earpiece if they don't already have built-in Bluetooth. Its functions can work natively with many VoIP apps, including Skype and business-class apps from Cisco.

Canon EOS-1D Mark IV lands for a pre-production hands-on
We've already seen some sample footage from Canon's new professional EOS-1D Mark IV DSLR (and should be seeing plenty more come December), but a pre-production version of the camera has now turned up at the Canon Pro Photo Solutions 09 show in London, and TrustedReviews managed to get an early hands-on with it. Nokia to shut down N-Gage game service
Nokia today closed a chapter in its online history today with news that it would close its N-Gage gaming service. The company plans to shutter the game download and community in September 2010 and is moving all its users over to the Ovi Store. Games on devices and in the store will remain, but Nokia warns that community features like high scores will come to an end as part of the switchover.

Exec responsible for Apple ads steps down
Lee Clow is resigning from his position as the chief creative officer for ad firm TBWA/Media Arts Lab, reports say. A veteran of the advertising industry for more than 40 years, Clow is best known for orchestrating Apple's most famous marketing campaigns, such as the 1984 Superbowl ad. The executive is also responsible for the dancing silhouettes in iPod ads, and the Get a Mac campaign attacking Windows PCs.

Xperia Pureness unboxed, performs for the camera (video)
As you are no doubt well aware, the launch date for the Xperia Pureness is looming. If you've been dying for a closer look, you're in luck: the fashion icons over at MobileBurn have got their hands on one and have been kind enough to make us a short film of the reveal. At first blush, the phone doesn't look any less impressive than it did in the shots and video we've seen before. There doesn't appear to be any hint of a keypad before the thing when shut off, although that obviously changes once it's powered on. Nintendo's next handheld may have free 3G
Nintendo's next-generation portable game machine could have free 3G access built in, company president Satoru Iwata commented on Friday. While not a definite plan, the executive tells those he is at least considering an echo of the Amazon Kindle's business model, which charges extra up front in return for lifetime 3G access. Family awarded $16.5 million for wrongful death in 'Hold Your Wii for a Wii' contest
Way back in January of 2007, we reported on the Strange family, who were suing Sacramento radio station KDND-FM for the wrongful death of Jennifer Strange, who was found dead in her home after competing in a contest to try to win a Nintendo Wii. The contest -- "Hold Your Wee for a Wii" -- involved seeing who could drink the most water without urinating, and Jennifer, who did not win, left the studio and later died. Olympus E-P2 leaks, due next week
Olympus' success to its first Micro Four Thirds camera should make its debut in as little as a week based on both official and unofficial news. A teaser page from the company is counting down to a "new PEN" launch on November 6th and has been accompanied by a leak showing the new camera. Still believed to be called the E-P2, the camera now appears to be virtually identical to the E-P1 on the outside but will come in black and have the option of a stereo mic attachment in addition to an add-on electronic viewfinder.

Apple's main ad man thinks different, steps down as Macs battle PCs like it's 1984
Apple's certainly seen plenty of shakeups in its ranks over the years and, while this one may not exactly come as a shock, it's still tough to overstate the influence of Lee Clow, who has announced that he's stepping down as chief creative officer of Apple's main ad agency, TBWA/Media Arts Lab. While he also made his mark with a range of other clients (including the Energizer Bunny and the Taco Bell Chihuahua), Clow was most closely identified with Apple, and founded the Media Arts Lab as part of TBWA in 2006 specifically to serve the company. Video may represent next big Apple push, say execs
Video is likely to be the next big focus of a lot of Apple's digital content, reports RBC Capital's Mike Abramsky. The analyst recently spoke to three Apple executives, including CFO Peter Oppenheimer; the VP for iTunes and Internet services, Eddy Cue; and finally David Moody, the VP for worldwide Mac marketing. Nokia announces the end of its N-Gage gaming platform
Nokia has officially announced that it will put an end to its problem-plagued N-Gage gaming service, integrating it into its Ovi Store. The move isn't really a shocker, and while Nokia has confirmed that no further games will be published, it's also said that it will continue to sell currently available games in the Ovi Store (as of today) until the end of September 2010. Reports of Flash playback issues in new 27-inch iMacs surface
With a new design that includes a 27-inch display with a 16:9 aspect ratio, and nearly as many pixels as the 30-inch Cinema Display, the new 27-inch iMac promises to be a media-watching Mecca. Alabama lawsuit accuses Apple, AT&T of MMS confusion
Apple is facing yet another lawsuit over delayed MMS support on American iPhones, court documents show. Although the feature was eventually enabled on September 25th, the case's plaintiff -- Alabama resident Clyde Franklin -- charges both Apple and AT&T of misleading the public on MMS availability, with promises that it would become an option on the iPhone 3G and 3GS with the arrival of the v3.0 firmware. It did not, and Franklin notes that only a small disclaimer on the Apple website made mention that AT&T support would only come in "late summer."

First Camino 2 release candidate goes online
Mozilla has posted a first release candidate for Camino 2.0, the next major edition of the company's Mac-focused web browser. RC1 makes relatively few changes compared to previous betas, but it does enable new AppleScript abilities, improved Full Keyboard Access support and per-site whitelisting or blacklisting of Flash. More significant may be an upgrade to the Gecko 1.9.0 engine, which includes bugfixes, better treatment of plug-ins and greater standards support, for instance through the use of JavaScript 1.8.

iPhone launches in China, faces challenges
Apple’s iPhone launched in China this morning, but the introduction of the hot US product has hit a little snag - the first iterations to reach market lack WiFI, even though local law was recently changed to permit inclusion of support for the standard.
Carrier, China Unicom, has reportedly contracted to buy five million iPhones at a cost of $1.5 billion. The ban on WiFi was enforced by central government in Beijing, but lifted in May - when manufacturing of the device had begun.
Lack of the standard may give some Chinese consumers the perception that they are being sold a sub-par version of the product, impacting sales.

Does the world’s sexiest desktop have a performance problem?
Disappointing reports claiming the 27-inch iMac may suffer performance problems have begun emerging, emanating from Apple’s Discussion Forums.
It's not at all clear what the root cause of the problem is, but we've noticed a big uptick in people complaining about performance issues on new 27-inch iMacs on Apple's support boards.
The most common symptom seems to be incredibly slow Flash video playback, others complain there's a bug forcing the hard drive to spin down. There’s even reports these Macs ship with a corrupted Snow Leopard build installed on the computer.

Mike Abramsky met with Eddy Cue, Apple's vice president for iTunes and Internet services, David Moody, vice president for worldwide Mac marketing and CFO Peter Oppenheimer. While he didn't get any straight talk, he did get their impressions of "market opportunities".

A pair of leaks have revealed NVIDIA's Fermi hardware should both be a dramatic visual upgrade and have a quick release of mobile parts. A post today on a Chinese forum shows samples of the graphics chipset that include 3D rendered faces with both extremely high detail as well as particularly complex visual effects, such as natural-looking facial hair or skin glare. Jibbigo iPhone app translates from English to Spanish and back again
Jibbigo is a recently released iPhone app which promises to help you out the next time you're desperately trying to make yourself understood by your Spanish-speaking compadres. The app is capable of recording a sentence and translating it -- essentially in real time -- back to you. As you can see in the screencap above, you can speak either Spanish or English, and the translator will do its work, displaying both your original and a translation into the other language. The dictionary contains about 40,000 words, and the app is aimed at travelers. iPhone goes on sale in China
Apple has officially launched the iPhone in China to relatively warm response, at least in Beijing, reports say. The device became available at 6:30PM local time on Friday, first through a China Unicom flagship store after a ceremony attended by Apple VP Greg Joswiak. iPhone climbs to 2.5% world market share
Apple in two years has pushed the iPhone up to 2.5 percent of the entire cellphone market, Strategy Analytics estimates. The company has roughly doubled its share from a year ago and now has half the share of established firms Motorola and Sony Ericsson, which have remained flat at five percent. We're hearing that the PC version of this here software still beats out the Mac counterpart, but equality is slowly but surely becoming a reality. Ein Bezirksgericht im US-Bundesstaat Kalifornien hat den als Spam-König bekannten Sanford Wallace zur Zahlung von 711 Millionen Dollar Schadenersatz an Facebook verurteilt. Richter Jeremy Fogel befand Wallace für schuldig, vorsätzlich gegen das US-Anti-Spam-Gesetz CAN-SPAM und eine einstweilige Verfügung verstoßen zu haben. Fogel leitete das Verfahren zur strafrechtlichen Verfolgung an die US-Staatsanwaltschaft weiter.

Verizon's FiOS first with EpixHD streaming
Verizon this morning became the first provider to offer EpixHD streaming video as part of its service. Those who have both a FiOS Internet connection and a FiOS TV subscription with the Epix TV channel can watch an unlimited amount of movies on the web at up to 720p. About 150 titles will be in rotation online, but the service will emphasize major, recent movies from MGM, Lionsgate and Parmaount; it should scale to include about 15,000 titles both old and new.

NEC Tele Scouter: Die Babelfischbrille für unterwegs

Es wird wohl noch eine Weile dauern bis aus dem Tele Scouter Prototyp von NEC ein Produkt wird, aber sie kündigen es schon für 2010 an. Das Display will unverständliches Kauderwelsch von Nichtjapanern in schöne Schriftzeichen übersetzen. Da es mit der Übersetzungssoftware in Real-Time (vor allem wenn es um gesprochene Sprache geht) allerdings noch nicht so weit her ist, muss der Tele Scouter sich erstmal als Augmented Reality Brille bei komplizierten Installationen verdingen. Does the world’s sexiest desktop have a performance problem?
Disappointing reports claiming the 27-inch iMac may suffer performance problems have begun emerging, emanating from Apple’s Discussion Forums.
It's not at all clear what the root cause of the problem is, but we've noticed a big uptick in people complaining about performance issues on new 27-inch iMacs on Apple's support boards.
The most common symptom seems to be incredibly slow Flash video playback, others complain there's a bug forcing the hard drive to spin down. There’s even reports these Macs ship with a corrupted Snow Leopard build installed on the computer.

Alcatel-Lucent schreibt erneut rote Zahlen
Alcatel-Lucent ist nach einem leichten Gewinn im Vorquartal im dritten Quartal 2009 (bis 30. September) wieder in die Verlustzone gerutscht. iPhone launches in China, faces challenges
Apple’s iPhone launched in China this morning, but the introduction of the hot US product has hit a little snag - the first iterations to reach market lack WiFI, even though local law was recently changed to permit inclusion of support for the standard.
Carrier, China Unicom, has reportedly contracted to buy five million iPhones at a cost of $1.5 billion. The ban on WiFi was enforced by central government in Beijing, but lifted in May - when manufacturing of the device had begun.
Lack of the standard may give some Chinese consumers the perception that they are being sold a sub-par version of the product, impacting sales.

Unsere Computervorstellungen gehen immer von einem Rechteck aus, wenn es um Desktops geht um so mehr. Das muss so nicht sein, denn Ericsson hat für ihr Life in 2020 Projekt jetzt seinen Spider Computer vorgestellt, der in etwa die Größe eines Laserschwerts im Ruhezustand hat. Der kann den Bildschirm via Pico-Projektor an die Wand werfen und die Tastatur via Laser auf den Tisch. Dem Prototyp mangelt es noch an Netzwerkverbindung und ausreichender Batterie, aber es ist ja schliesslich noch nicht mal 2010. Moment mal, es ist 2020 und wir bekommen nur einen ulkigen Rechner? Die Baltimore Sun hat ein Patentantrag von Apple entdeckt, in dem sich der iPhone-Hersteller ein Bluetooth-Stereo-Headset patentieren lassen will, welches ohne iPhone auch als Media-Player verwendet werden kann. Apple TV requires a re-download of iTunes Extras and LP, Remote.app updated
Interestingly, Apple is requiring people who want to use iTunesLP and iTunes extras with the new AppleTV 3.0 to re-download their content. We're not sure why but perhaps Apple had a last second change of format since the iTunes LP/extras format was released a few months ago.
Also, the Apple Remote has been updated to 1.3.2 to work with AppleTV 3.0 and iTunes 9.0.2.

It is done. Apple validated more than 100,000 iPhone/iPod touch applications on its AppStore. So far, only a bit more than 93,000 are available online, as all validated ones still need to be released after being granted. We suspected that Apple will wait for having 100,000 applications available online to launch a communication campaign on this topic. Cisco FlipShareTV streamer outed in FCC documents
Flip Video remote, meet your family. One of Cisco's latest FCC filings happened to keep its user manual outside the seal of confidentiality, giving us a pretty good look at FlipShareTV, a setup for streaming recorded video from the computer's FlipShare software, out the USB dongle transmitted wirelessly to the receiver connected to the TV and that's about it. Apple TV requires a re-download of iTunes Extras and LP, Remote.app updated
Interestingly, Apple is requiring people who want to use iTunesLP and iTunes extras with the new AppleTV 3.0 to re-download their content. We're not sure why but perhaps Apple had a last second change of format since the iTunes LP/extras format was released a few months ago.
Also, the Apple Remote has been updated to 1.3.2 to work with AppleTV 3.0 and iTunes 9.0.2.

iTunes 9.0.2 update breaks Palm Pre sync again
Palm Pre owners tonight discovered that iTunes 9.0.2 once again breaks sync with iTunes. It's unclear what Apple has done to deny a native presence and, unlike with some past iTunes updates, there are no direct allusions to altering compatibility. Users are known to still have use of gateway apps such as DoubleTwist or Missing Sync.

Owners of new iMacs reporting Flash playback problems
Several owners of the new iMacs have reported problems when attempting to play Flash videos, according to several posts on Apple's Support pages. Forum poster Subcide first noticed the issue with a 27-inch iMac and the latest Flash player. YouTube playback appeared "really jerky" with distorted sound, while the Activity Monitor indicated the CPU usage was spiking to 105 percent every few seconds.

HighPoint launches SATA 6Gb/S-rated PCI-Express 2.0 cards
HighPoint is launching a new series of SATA PCI-Express 2.0 cards, the Rocket 600 series. The new cards offer a SATA 6Gb/sec host adapter that will allow single or dual drives to reach 600MB/sec throughput, geared to reach maximum speeds using SSD drives. The cards are backward compatible with PCI-Express 1.0 technology and older SATA 3Gb/sec and 1.5Gb/sec drives. The new PCI cards use the same cables and connectors as previous generation SATA devices.

Apple engineers Chinese travels hint tablet r&d heading to crescendo
We all know Apple’s cooking something up - feverish market speculation, high-level meetings with publishers for eBook discussions, increased r&d spend all reinforce the notion the company has something up its sleeve - we all think it’s some form of tablet.
Now this speculation seems set to climb even higher with a source telling Business Insider that Apple engineers have been engaged in frequent trips from Cupertino to China.
“A source tells us a system integration engineer friend of his at Apple has been ramping up his travels back and forth between China lately, broadcasting word of his travels over the Internet,” the report claims.

AppleTV 3.0 update coming soon with iTunesLP
Today's new EULA for iTunes throws up a pretty obvious clue that an AppleTV 3.0 update is coming up - perhaps in a matter of days. The neglected hobby of Apple's isn't dead yet folks. Besides iTunesLP, is there any possibility of something useful like Hulu or Netflix showing up on there? Will it be enough to convince people to update and remove Boxee? We'll find out soon enough.

Apple updates AppleTV to 3.0, adds iTunes Extras, Genius Mixes and Internet radio
When Apple says AppleTV is just a hobby, they really mean it. A lot of you were hoping for more with Apple TV 3.0. After two years since the last update, we were too. But Apple's big surprises for AppleTV 3.0 are, in the words of Eddy Cue, Apple’s vice president of Internet Services:
with Apple TV 3.0 they get great new features including iTunes Extras, Genius Mixes and Internet radio.
Apple TV 3 also includes a new Interface and redesigned main menu that put recently purchased and top media content on top. We'll get some screenshots as soon as we do this update (we're not sure we want to kill Boxee for this). Press release follows:

iTunes 9.0.2, a 93MB update, adds support for Apple TV software version 3.0, adds an option for a dark background for Grid View, and improves support for accessibility.
Update: In the "improves support for accessibility" column, you can also put "breaks Palm Pre sync again". It doesn't, however, interfere with Jailbreakers.

It’s the new physical manifestation of the philosophical battle between Microsoft’s strategy of managing through necessity and Apple’s “whole widget’ M.O.

Nintendo DSi XL coming to America in Q1 2010
Since Europe and Japan can't have all the fun -- unless, of course, it's a black Nintendo Wii -- the super-sized DSi XL is also due out in the US sometime in Q1 2010, according to a spokesperson speaking with Joystiq. Still no word on price, but we wouldn't be surprised if it parallel the slight markup for the ¥20,000 / US $221 Japanese version. Apple releases iTunes 9.0.2 and Apple TV 3.0 updates
Apple has released a couple of updates: one for iTunes, bringing the latest software version to 9.0.2, and the other for Apple TV, which updates the software to version 3.0. These updates were released together because the update to iTunes adds support for the new Apple TV software. In addition to support and stability, a few new and requested features have been added to both of these updates.

First NVIDIA Fermi Cards Available Beginning of December
This is now almost certain. NVIDIA will start offering its first Fermi cards beginning of December. Those cards are expected by both gamers and Pro users willing to benefit from their impressive specifications for GPGPU:
3 billions transistors engraved at 40 nm
384-bits memory bus supporting up to 6 GB of GDDR5
512 core units divided into 16 clusters of 32 cores each, being each allocated 64 KB of L1 cache
768 KB of shared cache L2 memory for speeding data exchange
32-bits floating point computing
If one considers the performance level of current GeForce 8800 GT with open CL, we are very interested and curious to evaluate the power potentially delivered by Fermi cards. We suspect that Apple will bundle them with the release of future Mac Pro models (as a BTO) expected in January. So, we could get a 12 core Mac Pro with a Fermi card, more than enough power to run the future version of Final Cut Studio

27-inch iMacs having performance issues?
It's not at all clear what the root cause of the problem is, but we've noticed a big uptick in people complaining about performance issues on new 27-inch iMacs on Apple's support boards. The most common symptom seems to be incredibly slow Flash video playback, but people are also claiming that there's a bug forcing the hard drive to spin down, that there's a corrupted Snow Leopard build preinstalled, and even that the problem is bad permissions, which is basically how an OS X user gives up trying to figure things out. Apple hasn't said anything yet, but neither of the 27-inchers we have here are having problems, so we're keeping our fingers crossed while we wait for an official resolution. After having installed a Rootkit on its audio CD in 2005, to have recalled nearly 8 million batteries in 2006 and 2007, to have recalled 440.000 Vaio portables in 2008, Sony faces a new problem.
