Review: VMware Fusion 3
Virtualization on the Mac has had to move forward rapidly in the past several months: where it was once enough to run basic tasks in Windows XP, users increasingly expect an experience much like what they would have in Boot Camp. That's all the more true with the launch of Windows 7, where the visual effects are not only useful but often essential. Between this and the changes in the background brought about by Mac OS X Snow Leopard, VMware's Fusion 3 has much ground to cover. We hope to find out in our review whether it's an essential upgrade or simply nice to have.

iPhone and Windows 7 don't play nice, Intel P55 chipset to blame
The iPhone is one of the most wildly popular phones the world has ever seen, while Windows 7 is well on its way to becoming the globe's most ubiquitous OS. iPhone 3G/S: Der Unlock für Firmware 3.1.x steht vor der Tür
Das Baseband der Version 3.1.x der iPhone 3G/S Firmware war bisher nicht freischaltbar, ein Update auf Version 3.1.x ohne Verlust des ultrasn0w-Unlocks nur mit Pwnage möglich, welches das Update des Baseband verhindert. Einmal upgedated, war ein Downgrade des Baseband nicht mehr möglich, bzw. nur für die erste Charge der iPhone 3G Modelle (ca. 3% aller iPhones).

Palm Pixi definitely shipping with a new webOS version, but which?
Whoa, is that webOS 2.0 we see on the horizon? No, sorry, it definitely isn't -- but we can say with relative confidence that the upcoming Pixi will be shipping with a newer, slightly more feature-rich version of webOS than its Pre brethren around the world; if nothing else, Synergy supports Yahoo on the new model, as PreCentral observes. What remains to be seen is the exact version number that'll be shipping out of the gate -- recent DSLReports user agent logs suggest that 1.29 might be the gold build (for the record, the Sprint Pre currently rocks 1.2.1), but apparently there's some chatter going on about a 1.3 as well. Clarification: Apple ad man Lee Clow explains the story
Apple’s ad guru, Lee Clow, may be stepping down from his position as chief creative officer of TBWA/Media Arts Lab - but this doesn’t mean his influence has left the company - and he’s annoyed with an original report on MediaPost, which naturally emerged, erm, everywhere.
Following yesterday’s reportage, Clow, the man behind Apple’s powerful, ‘Think Different’ campaign, apparently distributed a note to staff, which we have published for the sake of clarification below:

Camino 2.0 browser reaches final beta...
Watch out, there’s a new (Mac) browser heading to town, Camino 2.0.
The browser has reached its fourth beta version, and while developers warn it may not be stable and probably isn’t suitable for daily use, though you can stick with Safari or give Camino 1.6.10 a try, if you wish.
The browser is a lot like Safari and developed by Mozilla. This will be the last beta, and while there’s a healthy list of known bugs, this version’s in distribution to ensure no critical problems remain in advance of final release.
There’s a goodly list of new and exciting features, including tabbed browsing, new security features, content zoom, download notifications, support for Full Keyboard Access the capacity to block Flash apps by default (unless you want to watch particular ones), new App

Adobe AIR 2.0: gains MultiTouch, promises performance boost and gesture controls
Adobe and Apple may not yet have inked a deal to bring Flash support to the iPhone, but that hasn’t stopped the Photoshop developer from adding a few next-gen smartphone-focused features to Adobe AIR, which promises a slew of these in its next version upgrade.
Just look at these features and tell us Apple didn’t force industry change when it introduced the MultTouch-savvy iPhone (which now accounts for one-in-forty cellphones sold worldwide, BTW).

Leaked docs show HTC's DROID Eris launching on November 6th for $99, running Android 1.5
Like it or not, we've got it on pretty reasonable authority that that HTC's first "DROID" phone is nothing more than a rebadged, shape-shifted Hero (something we've been hearing for a while now), and that it'll be launching on Verizon on November 6th, the same day as Motorola's DROID. That means Android 1.5 "Cupcake," Sense UI, 3.2-inch screen, 528MHz processor and so forth. The Eris will retail for $199 but with a $100 mail-in rebate. Popular Mechanics-Editor Glenn Derene musste als Kind jedes Jahr an Halloween (heute!) mit seinem Vater zusammen den Briefkasten abmontieren, denn sonst hätten sie am nächsten Morgen eine stinkende Eier-Rasiercreme-Ekelmischung aus der Kiste kratzen müssen. How-to: geek up your pumpkin
BOO! It's Halloween and it's also a Saturday, so let's not hear any pathetic excuses for not carving pumpkins. While we're no experts, we've got a few tips for making your jack-o'-lanterns better looking and more unique:
Always mark where you're carving first instead of freestyling, especially for the lid. Once the knife's in there's nothing you can do about it.
Want an accurate carving? Draw or print your pattern on paper first and then stick it on the pumpkin, so that you can use a pin to punch an outline.
Use a scalpel. Seriously, it's so much better than kitchen knives.

Lichtprojektionen auf Gebäude rufen ziemlich unterschiedliche Meinungen hervor, wie vor kurzem in Berlin das Festival of Lights mal wieder gezeigt hat. Ob man in den Lichtspielen eine potthässliche Vergewaltigung von Baudenkmälern sieht, nüchtern auf die verschwendete Energie hinweist, oder es einfach zauberhaft findet - die Projektion auf die Waterloo-Station in London mit der AdTrance genannten Technik ist vergleichsweise ausgefuchst. Zusammen mit iTunes 9 hat Apple Anfang September auch neue Produktgruppen im iTunes Store angekündigt, von denen bislang aber lediglich die iTunes LP auch im deutschen Store angekommen ist. Derzeit sind zwar gerade mal elf solcher Alben erhältlich, wir sind allerdings zuversichtlich, dass das Angebot in Zukunft schnell wächst. Wer das Format kostenlos testen will, sei auf diesen Artikel verwiesen.
Fehlanzeige dagegen ist in Deutschland die Suche nach dem DVD-ähnlich mit Bonus-Features angereichterten Videoformat iTunes Extras. Die Kollegen vom US-Engadget haben das DROID unter die Lupe genommen. Fazit der detaillierten Review: Exzellentes Smartphone, das die Erwartungen nahezu lückenlos erfüllt. Ein paar Kritikpunkte stehen natürlich dennoch auf der Liste. Die Kamera macht zwar gute Fotos, ist in der Bedienung aber nicht wirklich angenehm. Dafür überzeugt sie mit unverwackelten 720x480er Videos, wie im ersten der drei Streifen nach dem Break zu sehen ist. Die Auswahl an Apps ist eher dünn und von mäßiger Qualität, und mit der Intuitivität des Phones hapert es an einigen Stellen. iTunes LPs für Apple TV 3 neu laden
Per E-Mail informiert Apple derzeit darüber, dass vor der Veröffentlichung von Apple TV 3.0 gekaufte iTunes LPs erst einmal nicht auf Apple TV funktionieren. In Kürze werden neue Versionen dieser Titel bereit gestellt und in die sogenannte Download-Warteschlange gestellt, man wird zusätzlich per E-Mail auf die Verfügbarkeit hingewiesen.
Zu finden sind diese neuen Versionen dann über das iTunes-Menü "Store -> Nach verfügbaren Downloads suchen". Die neue iTunes LP ersetzt die ältere Version in der Mediathek und kann asnchließend auf. Apple TV übertragen werden.

USB 3.0 and SATA 6G put to good use: benchmarks
The fine folks at both HotHardware and PC Perspective have run the new ASUS P7P55D-E Premium motherboard through its paces, which has the particular distinction of handling both USB 3.0 and the up-and-coming SATA 6G through controllers by NEC and Marvell, respectively. Lucky for us, both sites' tests came to similar conclusions. The Seagate Barracuda XT SATA 6G drive has almost zero improvement over SATA 3G, other than in some burst speeds due to the fancy cache on the 6G -- the bottleneck here is the drive, not the controller. Meanwhile, USB 3.0 has speeds that are roughly 5 to 6 times faster than USB 2.0 with the same drive, a huge win for fans of external storage the world over. Perhaps even better news is that

Google again denies making own phone
Google tonight moved to quashed rumors that it would make its own smartphone. The company's Android project president, Andy Rubin, says it would be unfair for Google to "compete with its customers" and that it remains dedicated to Android only as an operating system for outside hardware manufacturers. He adds that Google isn't particularly experienced at hardware design and that its influence on the T-Mobile G1's hardware design is more a negative than a positive.

Aptera 2e three-wheeler deemed a car by the DoE, eligible for funding
For a time, it looked Aptera might be missing out on the US Department of Energy's funding bonanza for energy-efficient vehicles due to its car's three-wheeled nature, but it looks like President Obama has now had the final say on the matter, and signed legislation that makes both two-wheeled and three-wheeled vehicles eligible for the same funding as their four-wheeled counterparts. Of course, that doesn't yet mean that Aptera will actually receive any funding, and the legislation doesn't have anything to do with safety regulations, where the 2e is still classified as a motorcycle by the Department of Transportation. xpPhone teased with specs and pictures, makes Windows XP young again
Don't panic, we haven't gone back in time. What we're looking at here is the world's first but still-yet-to-be-released phone that runs on Windows XP, and its Chinese maker has just released some juicy specs and interface images to tease us all. The ITG xpPhone will be blessed with the chutzpah-filled AMD "Super Mobile" CPU, coupled with either 512MB or 1GB RAM. Storage options range from 8GB SSD to 120GB HDD (probably 1.8-inch) and everything in between. While the sheet confirms both GSM and CDMA support, ITG's pre-order page -- which looks more like a newsletter sign-up page at the moment -- is still vague on the phone's availability and price. Time to say goodbye
Liebe Leser, es ist Zeit sich zu verabschieden, der Lauf ist durch und ich habe mich wieder blendend erholt.
Ich möchte mich zuerst bei allen Lesern bedanken, die hoffentlich gerne meine Blogs durchstöbert haben. Zudem herzlichen Dank bei macmagazin, dass sie mir die Chance gegeben haben, in Berlin zu laufen. Ein Erlebnis, das ich nie vergesse!

Nintendo's Iwata muses about Kindle-like business model for future handheld
You may simply be able to chalk this one up to some freewheeling speculation and rumination, but Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata went pretty far out on a limb in talking about the future of the company during a recent sit-down with the Financial Times, and indicated that Nintendo may just be looking outside the gaming industry for a little inspiration. Apparently, Iwata is intriguiged by the Kindle "because it's a new business model in which the user doesn't bear the communications cost," which he says wouldn't "fit Nintendo customers because we make amusement products." RED DSMC specs detailed, prices start at $28,000 for EPIC-X, lower-end Scarlet still vague
Here we are at last. RED has finally dropped the full specs of at least one its "Digital Stills and Motion Cameras." And what did you expect? RED has naturally blown this thing out. The first camera to be released will be the insanely high-end EPIC-X, which will come out in four stages and retails for $28,000 (ouch). A pre-production "TATTOO" version will hit this year, followed by a production model for pre-existing RED owners next year, a release after that for RED trade-ins and then finally a widespread release. Meanwhile the Scarlet 2/3-inch camera (which is much more akin to current video-shooting DSLRs, though it doesn't have a full frame sensor) hasn't been given a price range or a release window, but promises to please with

Progress bar appears on grey screen at bootup
A few users have described a problem with their Macs where upon booting the system will display the grey screen with an Apple and instead of showing the revolving indicator below the Apple logo there is a grey progress bar. In some cases the system will boot normally once the progress bar completes, but in others the system will turn off about half-way through the progress bar.
