Motorola Droid reviewed by BGR
BoyGenius has the Droid review up and fankly, they're pretty smitten with it. It looks a little "square" to us but we have to admit, that 850x480 screen has us a bit green. The "not on AT&T's network" part also sounds nice except for international travel.
They say the Android 2.0 "Eclair" software is also much more refined. It is interesting to note that this is the first Android-based phone with the ARM Cortex A8-class chips that the iPhone and Pre have. In fact, it has the same TI OMAP 3430 CPU as the Pre.
Interestingly, they mention that this won't compete with the iPhone:
The Droid isn’t an iPhone competitor because nothing at this point in time is an iPhone competitor besides the new iPhone. And things don’t have to be right now. Everyone can eat. So will the Motorola Droid be successful? Absolutely

Apple no longer pursuing ZFS as the next generation file system for OS X
Today, the ZFS repository on MacOSforge was closed, likely meaning the end of Apple's pursuit of Sun's next generation file storage system for use in Mac and Macintosh OSX Server. They also mention that the mailing list and repository are also being removed.
As John Gruber points out, the writing has been on the wall for awhile as 10.6 betas has some support for the file system but the final releases (Client and Server) had it wiped from existance.
While it is noow unlikely that Apple will ever use ZFS as a mainstream file system, it is possible that Apple could support it as a third party file system, like it does with SMB or NFS formats. Gruber mentions that this decis

TUNEWEAR launches new VisualDock with 3D sound enhancement
TUNEWEAR has launched a new iPhone and iPod dock, the VisualDock. The unit is an AV-capable docking station with S-Video and line outputs. Special controls toggle simulated 3D sound, and alternating between charge or charge/sync modes when connected to a computer. ITU approves standard cellphone charger
A new Universal Charging Solution (UCS) has been approved by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a division in the United Nations, according to a Thursday report. The energy efficient charger will be compatible with all cellphones regardless of make and model, with certain unnamed manufacturers already incorporating the standard into their products, the ITU says. Other than the energy savings, the new charger will also help eliminate waste as the charger can be retained as new phones are upgraded and older ones are thrown out.

Apple ceases efforts to bring ZFS support to Mac OS X
Despite previous efforts to bring support for the ZFS file-system to Mac OS X, Apple has dropped the project. Sun Microsystems CEO Jonathan Schwartz several years ago publicly claimed Leopard would utilize ZFS instead of HFS+, although Apple only provided limited support for the new technology. Even the read-only functionality was dropped with the transition to Snow Leopard.

Verizon trying to bury Storm2 in favor of Droid?
Verizon may be timing the launch of its BlackBerry Storm2 to draw as much attention away from it as possible, a telling report may show. A seemingly final document given to Engadget has the Storm2 shipping on October 28th, the same day as the Motorola Droid is known to make its high-profile debut. The move would guarantee less attention paid to the updated BlackBerry and would be made all the more prominent by Verizon's decision to remain silent about the phone during its worldwide launch just two weeks earlier.

Miraizon intros Reframe AV standards converter
Miraizon has released Reframe, an app for converting audio and video between standards. Users can for instance convert video from PAL to NTSC, SD to HD, and film to video. Advanced settings make it possible to alter video properties such as frame rate or size, as well as audio details like sampling rate. Verizon rolls out HP Mini 311, Mini 110 netbooks
The cat may have gotten out of the bag ahead of the Windows 7 launch, but Verizon has just now gotten official with its latest subsidized netbook offerings, which include some unfortunately pricey 3G-equipped versions of HP's Mini 311 and Mini 110. iGOG VelAUcity brings velocity-sensitive drums to your humble iPhone
Mom / wife / building superintendent still won't let you get a drum set, huh? Well, you can show them, you can show them all with the new iGOG VelAUcity app, which for a mere $5 lets you do velocity-sensitive drumming on the iPhone. It works pretty great, too to an extent. The technology appears to be based on the iPhone's built-in mic (VelAUcity doesn't work on an iPod touch), and the app recommends you use it with headphones, but not a headset with its own built-in mic, which would gum things up. In practice the drumming is really great, with multiple hit points on the drum pads and pretty good velocity sensitivity (for an iPhone app), but there are plenty of mic-introduced foibles like the potential for feedback or stray noises messing things up -- you basically would have trouble using thi

Belkin issues TuneBase car dock recall
Accessory maker Belkin has issued a special product recall, addressing some of the company's TuneBase car docks. Specifically affected are the TuneBase FM with ClearScan, the TuneBase FM with Hands-Free, and the TuneBase Direct with Hands-Free. As a result of a problem with washers, versions of the docks bought on or after April 1st may produce smoke or fire when plugged into a car's power port.

Dell's Adamo XPS to top at 1.9GHz?
New rumored hardware details for the Adamo XPS suggest the system will be only a mild upgrade to the existing Adamo 13 that trades larger speed gains for its extra dimensions. The ultra-thin model should sit in between the two upgraded current models with ultra-low voltage Core 2 Duo processors between 1.4GHz and 1.9GHz versus the minimum 1.86GHz Core 2 Duo S in a challenger like the MacBook Air. The Engadget tips also claim the built-in solid-state storage will be less than for current Adamos with either a 128GB or 180GB solid-state drive.

BBC to launch global, paid iPlayer?
BBC Worldwide, the parent company of BBC, is considering launching a premium version of its iPlayer online service that would be accessible by global audiences. Such a service would allow viewers from outside of the UK to watch popular BBC programs, such as Top Gear and Torchwood as well as listen to streaming BBC radio stations. BBC executives have yet to commit to pricing but suggest they could charge per episode, potentially as high as $10 depending on the content.

Say you're North America's largest wireless carrier -- how do you go about burying a product you're about to carry that you secretly wish didn't exist? Samsung readies first commercial LTE 4G modem
As part of a just-announced partnership between Ericsson and Samsung, the latter has released the first USB modem fully compatible with the new Long Term Evolution (LTE) 4G standard. The Samsung GT-B3710 modem will be sold commercially through provider TeliaSonera in 2010 in Norway and Sweden. It promises to bring peak speeds of 150Mbps downstream as well as 50Mbps uploads.

Dell Adamo XPS specs leak out: ULV processors, integrated graphics
At this point we have no idea why Dell won't just up and launch the Adamo XPS, but if they can't get it sorted we'll just piece it together ourselves -- and today we've got two different sources providing specs for the super-thin laptop with the funktastic hinge. Inside that crazy 1.5-pound case lies some pretty standard internals: we're hearing there'll be 1.4 and 1.9GHz dual-core Intel ULV processors with integrated X4500MHD graphics and 4GB of DDR3 RAM, all under (well, behind) an LED-backlit 13.4-inch WXGA screen and either a 128 or 180GB SSD. That's good for a reported score of just 3.3 on the Windows 7 experience test -- pretty sad for a $2,000 machine. The two available batteries are

Dell confirms 22-inch touch LCD for US
After a leak and Japanese details earlier this week, Dell on Friday brought its SX2210T display to the US. It represents Dell's first dedicated multi-touch display and supports one- or two-finger input in operating systems that recognize them, particularly Windows 7. Amazon confirms Kindle reader for Mac development
You can’t underestimate the love lavished on Amazon’s Kindle among UK first adopters - the giant retailer’s sold a fair few of its eBook reading devices to Mac user’s here in the UK - and now it seems the company plans to release a Kindle reader for the Mac.
The news follows Microsoft’s declaration during its Windows 7 launch that Amazon is developing a reader for that platform.
Now Fast Company informs Amazon is developing the same for the Mac, citing a company spokesperson who said, “Yes, we are working on a Kindle app for Mac.”
This is interesting news as Apple allegedly engages in development of it

In den nächsten Minuten mache ich mich auf zum NikeStore in der Tauentzienstraße und hole mein Starterpaket ab. Ich nehme an, der Andrang ist hoch..wieviele wohl mitlaufen? Ich lasse mir nichts anmerken, wie ein Vollprofi werde ich routiniert meine Starternummer abholen und ein siegessicheres Lächeln durch die Runde werfen. Angst ist dein größter Feind!! Die anderen werden sich verausgaben auf der ersten Hälfte der Strecke, auf der zweiten ziehe ich nach. Mal sehen: Strategie gegen Training! Man man man, warum macht man sowas? iPhone, iPod to overthrow Nintendo by 2014?
The iPhone platform could overtake rivals Nintendo and Sony for the lead in growing handheld gaming in as little as five years, a DFC Intelligence report says. The analyst group believes portable hardware from the Japanese companies is likely to still lead in terms of sheer units in the future but believes growth has "peaked" for devices like the DSi or PSP Go where Apple's platform is still climbing quickly. By 2014, the iPhone and iPod touch are expected to be the only major devices still seeing significant growth.

Microsoft first-quarter income down 18 percent, still beats expectations
Microsoft just turned in its first quarter financial report card, and while the good vibes around Windows 7 launch haven't yet begun to fade, the numbers here aren't exactly cheery: revenue is down 14 percent from last year at $12.92b, operating income is down 25 percent at $4.48b, net income is down 18 percent at $3.57b, and earnings per share are down 17 percent at $0.40. Not wonderful, but it's better than analysts were expecting, and the stock is actually way up on the news. This morning we’re hearing all about the first emerging v.1.0 flaws in Microsoft’s newly-released Windows 7.0 OS - and it looks like poor impoverished student PC users have been hit with the newest identified bug in the newly-shipping Microsoft public beta.
Engadget is reporting that “quite a few people have had issues installing the downloadable $29 student upgrade edition on 32-bit Vista”.

Slacker phases out hardware business, focuses on other devices
It's not exactly a huge surprise considering we haven't even heard so much as a whisper about a new Slacker device as of late, but it looks like company president Jim Cady has now finally confirmed that Slacker will indeed be phasing out its hardware business altogether. At the moment, that business consists entirely of the Slacker G2 personal radio, which will still be available "though at least the first half of next year," and offers a number advantages over the Slacker app for other devices. Boston iPod ads lead to political controversy
Giant banner ads for iPods have created political controversy in Boston, writes the Boston Globe. The ads are first said to arrived in fall of 2007, a few months before the opening of the city's flagship Apple Store. Covering a wall measuring 13,750 square feet, the banners immediately drew fire from the Outdoor Advertising Board, which called them illegal. Windows 7 student upgrade installer not working for many
The Windows 7 launch seems to have gone off mostly roses and sunbeams, but we're hearing today that quite a few people have had issues installing the downloadable $29 student upgrade edition on 32-bit Vista -- apparently the file doesn't unpack to an ISO, but instead to an executable and two bundles that don't function properly, and eventually the process errors out with a 64-bit app trying to launch on 32-bit systems. It's possible to create an ISO using some hackery, but the install process seems to be 50/50 after that -- we've heard of both success and further crashes. For it's part, Microsoft says it's looking into things, so hopefully a newly repackaged download will be forthcom

Die Denic hat einen großen Ansturm auf die heute eingeführten Kurzdomains gemeldet. Zwischen 9 und 14 Uhr sind bei der Registrierungsstelle 73.998 Anträge eingegangen. Dell's first rugged tablet PC shows at FCC
An FCC filing (PDF) from Novatel has revealed that Dell plans to apply its rugged XFR badge to a tablet PC for the first time. Titled the Latitude XT2 XFR, it would take the company's familiar 12-inch XT2 convertible tablet but harden the system for use outdoors or in more dangerous workplaces: the body would have extra shock-absorbing protection, particularly at the corners and the hinge. Deutsche Bahn akzeptiert Millionenstrafe im Datenskandal
Die Deutsche Bahn hat den Bußgeldbescheid des Berliner Datenschutzbeauftragten Alexander Dix in Höhe von 1,12 Millionen Euro akzeptiert. In einer Pressemitteilung erklärte er: "Das ist das höchste Bußgeld, das eine deutsche Datenschutzaufsichtsbehörde bisher festgesetzt hat." Mit dem Bußgeldbescheid werden laut Dix alle bekannt gewordenen Datenschutzverstöße bei der Bahn geahndet.

Acer releases desktop LCD with 8m:1 contrast
Acer wrapped up the week today by rolling out a new high-performance desktop LCD that appears first in Japan. The 24-inch S243HL uses a white LED backlight that provides it with an extremely high contrast ratio even when compared to typical LED-lit displays, jumping from 1,000:1 to 8,000,000:1 with dynamic contrast active. The thinner technology also contributes to a main panel that measures about 0.57 inches thick, although the base is thicker.

Apple's Boot Camp 'will support Windows 7' by year's end, company states
Apple will introduce support for Windows 7 within Boot Camp by the end of the year, the company has confirmed.
In a short tech support document posted to the Apple site, the company said, "Apple will support Microsoft Windows 7 (Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate) with Boot Camp in Mac OS X Snow Leopard before the end of the year.”
The company also confirmed, "This support will require a software update to Boot Camp." Apple did not reveal a schedule for the Boot Camp update.
Apple also warned of nine Mac models that just won’t be able to run Windows 7 in Boot Camp. (Though we’d note the most likely guest OS may be Windows XP, for all those migrating to the Mac from Windows in preference to an upgrade

Apple has unleashed a pair of important software updates, one for users of its professional applications, the other for Mac OS X server admins (whose numbers recently begun to swell on the release of the Mac mini server configuration).
Pro Applications Update 2009-01 is for users of Apple’s professional video- and audio-production suite, Final Cut Studio. Information on the update is available below.
Server Diagnostics 3X106 is a free package of tools that test your server for hardware issues. “Apple Server Diagnostics (AXD) runs a customizable set of tests to help you diagnose issues with server components,” Apple states. Components include the Boot ROM, Ethernet controller, fan, hard drive, memory, power supply, processor, sensor, USB ports, and the video controller.

Google continues rapid development of its Google Chrome browser for Mac, which the company has previously hinted will be up for v.1 release before Christmas.
The new release, Google Chrome 4.0.223.8, is a development release that’s not recommended for the rest of us, but does include support for printing and a QuickTime plug-in to enable multimedia content. The release also features, “lots of important Extensions changes” and a few fixed bugs.
“Be sure to read the Known Issues if you are running Chrome for Mac,” the company warns on its development pages.

Barnes & Noble nook Lend Me feature is severely limited, assumes you have friends
There's been tremendous fuss made over the Barnes & Noble nook, due at least partly to its ability to lend your purchased e-books to friends -- just like real books. The 21,5" models keep an architecture that one had already on the preceding ranges, this has been inherited from the world of the laptops with a 9400M chip and does not include a second graphics card. One also keeps the two memory connectors, the maximum that this chip supports.
But things change radically on the 27" models. The possibility of putting 4 memory cards is revealing (also the adoption of the core i5 and i7 but will come back to this). Apple has chosen not to use products intended for the laptops, but for office machines, which is a return, the thing that has not happened for the iMac since the G5 models. For some of you, like this guy (look at his face!), this is a dream come true, no questions asked. The rest will be wondering what the hell is going on here. See, that bicycle helmet affixed with what looks like a robotic crab is a not so subtle, ear tugging navigational device that could ultimately benefit the sight-impaired or anyone, really -- it pulls on the left ear to direct the wearer to the left, on the right to go right. Mit dem "Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool" (WUDT) hat Microsoft ein Programm veröffentlicht, das eine einfache Installation von Windows 7 auf Rechnern ohne DVD-Laufwerk ermöglichen soll. Aspire 1420p tablet cameos on Acer's US site, at Chinese press event
He's twisting away from the camera because he's shy, obviously. Acer's Aspire 1420p tablet made an appearance today at a Chinese press event, and our regional Engadget correspondents were there to grab as many glimpses as their cameras would allow. What makes it even sweet, though, is knowing this little guy's coming to the states, as a rough product page was found on Acer's US site. From what we read, it's got a 11.6-inch LED-backlit multitouch screen with WXGA resolution, an Intel Celeron processor with integrated graphics, up to 8GB RAM and 320GB HDD, 802.11b/g/Draft-N, Bluetooth, a multi-card reader, webcam, and optional 3G. Some secrets remain, of course, like price and release date -- where's Encyclopedia Brown when you really need him?

EMC meldet Gewinn- und Umsatzrückgang im dritten Quartal
EMC hat im dritten Quartal 2009 einen Umsatz von 3,52 Milliarden Dollar erwirtschaftet, fünf Prozent weniger als im Vorjahresquartal. Gegenüber dem zweiten Vierteljahr 2009 steigen die Einnahmen um acht Prozent und damit stärker, als von EMC prognostiziert. AT&T: 3.2 Million iPhone Activated During the last Quarter
AT&T announced to have reached a new record with the iPhone during the third financial quarter. According to the company, 3.2 million iPhones have been activated, vs. 2.4 million the previous quarter. According the figures, 40% are new AT&T customers, leaving competitors to join the carrier, however, there is no data defining the number of AT&T customers who left the carrier for competitors.Of course, such a huge number of iPhone contributed to the explosion of IP traffic faced by the carrier during the same period. REvenues generated by the iPhone-data plan increased by 34%. This is the first time that AT&T officially recognize the impact of its iPhone customers on its network hardware and infrastructure pushing them to their limits and even beyond with numerous outages.

Microsoft: 'We have no plans for Blu-Ray on Xbox 360'
A recent Gizmodo sit down with Steve Ballmer led with a headline exclaiming a Blu-ray add-on for Xbox was coming. See, when Ballmer was asked about making the Xbox a home theater companion of choice and where Blu-ray might fit in, the Windows 7 wild man said, "Well I don't know if we need to put Blu-ray in there -- you'll be able to get Blu-ray drives as accessories." Seagate Started Production of its First SSDs
As announced earlier, Seagate started production of its SSDs as well as sampling to its customers. As expected, the company does not plan initially to target the consumer electronics market, but rather Pro user and server markets. This is not surprising if you know that most of Intel X25 SSD series are ending up to datacenters were they are particularly appreciated for their lower power consumption and heat release. So, one should not be surprised if the first SSDs made by Seagate will be in 2.5" format.
The main question remaining is: will Seagate be able to carry out the transition from platter-based HD to SSDs? As we know today, both drive formats will most likely live together for years, as platter-based HD still offer larger storage capacity when compared to SSD (at least on GB/USD and GB/unit), but will Seagate be able to secure enough memory chips to join the battle for the SSD market? Motorola briefly shows Droid site, confirms specs
Motorola tonight inadvertently spoiled its own plans for the Droid by briefly posting a product page (since pulled) for the phone. While most of the features of the phone are already known, they confirm that its Android 2.0 build will include a full HTML5-capable web browser -- the first outside of Safari -- and will get Flash 10.1 support in early 2010. The specs also confirm a slightly faster than usual 550MHz processor and that a 16GB microSDHC card will be pre-installed.

AT&T activates 3.2 Million iPhones in the quarter, a new record
iPhone growth certainly hasn't slowed. AT&T released its quarterly earnings report today and among the announcements was the activation of 3.2 million iPhones in the quarter. That, not only was a new quarterly record, it was 3/4ths the total of 4.3 million postpaid 3G integrated wireless devices (devices with keyboards - or "smartphones") that AT&T sold. Incredible.

Ballmer takes another stupid swipe at the iPhone
Look, we know it is his job to downplay the iPhone, but his rationales keeps getting weaker and weaker. Yesterday in an AP article, Steve Ballmer said:
"Let's face it, the Internet was designed for the PC. The Internet is not designed for the iPhone. That's why they've got 75,000 applications — they're all trying to make the Internet look decent on the iPhone."

Comcast becomes wireless ISP
This is what we like to see. Comcast is entering the 3G/4G wireless network market, likely becoming an MVNO on Sprint's wireless 3G/WiMAX network (anyone else have 4G?).
They are offering a combination package for $50/month in select metro areas. What's REALLY interesting here is that Comcast also has its Digital Voice service which works over VoIP. It isn't a stretch to think that they'll soon be offering their voice services as a wireless product, unless Sprint has something to say about that.

Windows 7 is now officially shipping and Microsoft's got some new ads out.
Separately, Apple has released a Knowledge Base article detailing support for Windows 7 on Bootcamp before the end of the year. While Apple's full support makes installation easier, many have had luck installing Windows 7 RTM on BootCamp partitions already (see Giz Post). Psystar isn't just going to sell its Hackintosh technology to OEMs. It is now selling it to the general public for $50. Erster offizieller Catalyst zur HD-5800-Serie

Apple will officially support Windows 7 in Boot Camp before end of year
Of course plenty of folks have Windows 7 running in Boot Camp just fine, but if you're one of those crazies that goes in for Apple's seal of approval you'll have to wait a little bit. The official support is coming "before the end of the year" to Snow Leopard and will obviously require an update to the Boot Camp software. Unfortunately, Apple's excluded a lot of its 2006 Intel-based computers from this forthcoming update, and we're getting the vibe that this is a Snow Leopard-only affair. Basically, par for the Apple course.

The New iMac Disassembled
Our friends at Kodawarisan disassembled the new iMac in a record time, even faster than iFixit, and as usual offer a photo gallery:
The inside design is now really close the the one used for MacBook Pro unibody where almost all components can be removed together on the same support. Unfortunately if you want to change the HD you will still have to get your screw drivers and suction pads as you will need to remove the glass plate sitting in front of the LCD panel. So, either you purchase the model with the largest HD available today, or you will have to use external HD to extend your storage space at the cost of transfer speed (even in Firewire 800).

Toshiba Releases its first Fuel Cell
Toshiba announced the availability of its first fuel cell (limited series, 3,000 units):
Based on methanol, and weighting 280g, it can deliver a stable 5V tension of 400 mA, so be used to either reload battery of most USB devices or directly be used as a battery. When filling up the tank of the cell, one would be able to fully charge the battery of 2 mobile phones. High grade methanol cartridges are available to refueling the cell. Each cartridge will offer 50 ml volume, and sold by 5 units it will cost customers 34.5 USD. The fuel cell itself will cost 326 USD. This is a rather moderate price, however, the cost of methanol make the cost of a single charge for the battery of a mobile phone to 1 USD - much more expensive than most current solutions. Ballmer: Win Mobile 7 will bring Zune features
Microsoft chief Steve Ballmer today provided a handful of minor revelations for his company's strategy in an interview today. In his discussion with Engadget, the executive has now all but confirmed that Windows Mobile 7 will "come hard" with elements of the Zune interface; previously, the company had only made indirect allusions to the software appearing in a future update. Most anticipate the release moving the phone OS towards a more touch-friendly platform as well as to give it stronger media playback.

Third Street Software has released an update to its software for academic-reference management and file organization, Sente 6. The application delivers tools for creating and maintaining libraries containing PDF files, with options to search and sync content. With the latest version, maintaining multiple copies of a reference library and assigning tags have both been simplified. Heute vor 8 Jahren: Präsentation des ersten iPod
Heute vor acht Jahren hat Apple-Boss Steve Jobs vor überschaubarem Publikum mit weitem Blick in die Zukunft den ersten iPod als "Breakthrough Digital Device"vorgestellt.
Die Reaktionen auf das mit einer 5 GB Festplatte und Monochrom-Display ausgestattete Gerät waren zunächst allerdings eher verhalten. Kaum jemand erkannte damal das Potenzial hinter dem damals noch mit mechanischem Scrollrad ausgestatteten Audioplayer, geschweige denn hätte jemand den Einfluss vorausgesehen, den dieser auf den Markt für Unterhaltungselektronik, den Musikvertrieb und nicht zuletzt auch die Entwicklung der Mobiltelefone in der heutigen Zeit nehme würde.
