HP unleashes Compaq L2105tm touchscreen, multitouch monitor
HP's just rather quietly announced a new display hot on the heels of tomorrow's Windows 7 launch. This 21.5-inch, 1080p bad boy boasts an optical multitouch panel with one finger scrolling and two finger mousing capabilities. Stylus fans will also be overjoyed to hear that the Compaq L2105tm has a stylus of its own that tucks into the side of the monitor when not in use. HP is calling this one the first "Windows 7 certified" monitor, meaning you should be able to pull it right out of the box, plug it in and get moving. T-Mobile's Project Dark plans and prices leaked
Details of T-Mobile's Project Dark smartphone plan pricing scheme have been revealed, thanks to leaked documents on TMoNews. This includes an individual $80 per month plan that gives users 500 anytime minutes as well as unlimited data and text messaging, which compares favorably to AT&T's $70 plan that includes 450 minutes and unlimited data but no text messaging. The pricing includes individual plans that carry no associated two-year contracts, as well as family plans with two lines and a two-year commitment.

Analyst: iPhone leading switch to mobile Internet
The iPhone and iPod touch are pushing the entire industry towards the mobile Internet, Morgan Stanley analyst Mary Meeker said at the Web 2.0 summit yesterday. University develops 1TB memory chip technology
Engineers at the North Carolina State University claim to have developed a chip smaller than a human fingernail that can store 50 times more data than current DRAM memory chips of similar size, Wired reported on Tuesday. The prototype can theoretically hold 1TB, says Jagdish Narayan, a professor of materials science and engineering at the school. This was achieved by selectively doping the material, or adding impurities to change its data storage capacity. In this case, the researchers added nickel to magnesium oxide, mixing the metal and ceramic.

Apple Europe head credits multiple channels for Q4 growth
A multi-channel strategy is at least partly responsible for Apple's high fourth-quarter growth in Europe, says Pascal Cagni, Apple's general manager and VP for Europe, Africa, the Middle East and India. Whereas growth was 20 percent in the Americas and 25 percent worldwide, combined European revenues advanced 45 percent. Some $2.491 billion was accumulated in the region, as compared to the $4.297 billion produced in the Americas.

Neue Vertriebsformen für iPhone Apps
Seit dieser Woche hat Apple die "In App Purchase"-Funktion auch für kostenlose Apps freigegeben. Dies gestattet es endlich, Apps auch analog des Shareware-Prinzips zu vertreiben: Wem die Grundfunktionen oder -Levels einer Lite-App zusagen, der kann einfach innerhalb der schon erworbenen App weitere Funktionalität kostenpflichtig freischalten - ganz individuell nach seinen speziellen Bedürfnissen.

Review: WowWee Roborover gets friendly with your furniture
See that glowing face? Yep, it's the super-enthusiastic Roborover from WowWee. We won't lie: we were a bit stoked by the arrival of this yellow explorer at Engadget's doorstep. Too bad it didn't exactly walk all the way from its warehouse, forcing us to go through the painful procedure of cutting up the tapes and untangling the ties of its shipping box. Five minutes later we've got a 4-pound robot on our hands, and we'd say overall the build quality is an eight out of ten (the cuts on the plastic parts could do with a finer finish) which is pretty good for a toy. Canada to force transparency in ISP throttling
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) today set groundwork for net neutrality in the country through a ruling that discourages Internet providers from throttling traffic. The guidelines will encourage monetary practices first, such as bandwidth caps or metered Internet access, and will accept slowing down some or all service only when necessary. All providers will also have to clearly publicize any throttling practices and give customers at least 30 days' notice, or 60 days' notice for wholesalers dependent on another Internet provid

Snow Leopard SMB incompatibility with newer Samba versions on Unix systems?
A few people have noticed a problem in Snow Leopard where depending on the view being used, the Finder may not properly manage files on shared SMB resources. Specifically, when in column view in the Finder, while files and folders can be created and deleted, folders cannot be renamed. In some instances doing this leads to the Finder crashing and relaunching but for the most part folders just will not rename.

First 'white space' network hits Claudville, Virginia
Well, this one's been years in the making (literally), but it looks like the very first white space network using those newly freed up broadcast TV channels has now been lit up in Claudville, Virginia (population 916), which should just be the first of plenty more rural communities to come. Comic book deal may back e-book focus for Apple tablet
A deal signed by a start-up company supports the notion that e-books will be a focus of Apple's forthcoming tablet, claims the Chicago Sun-Times's Andy Ihnatko. The columnist recently spoke with the CEO of LongBox, a business working on a digital storefront for selling the latest editions of comic books. BlackBerry Bold 9700 gets handled, appreciated for its nuances
Our dear colleagues over at Engadget German have had a chance to play with RIM's just-announced BlackBerry Bold 9700 today, and every indication we've gotten is that this thing is a perfect -- if not extremely conservative -- successor to the first-generation Bold. Interface and network speed are both praised (both the 9700 and the Bold before it feature a 624MHz core, so there's some magic going on here) and the microSD card is now hot-swappable, meaning that you've got a theoretically limitless supply of storage space if you happen to be carrying around a pocketful of 16GB cards. Ectaco intros jetBook Lite pocket eBook reader
Ectaco has announced its second eBook reader at the Frankfurt Book Fair in New York, labeled jetBook Lite. The portable device weighs 7.5 ounces and features a 5-inch transflective monochrome display manufactured by Toshiba. Internal memory provides just 100MB of storage, while an SD card slot allows for expansion. The eBook reader also supports a variety of different language options such as English, German, Spanish, Russian, and Polish.

Google music service to merge samples, downloads
Google's rumored Audio music service will be less controversial than rumored at first based on two follow-up leaks. Multiple contacts tell Reuters that it will automatically provide players for MySpace-owned iLike or Lala when users search for songs on Google and provide at least the option of playing a sample or else buying the MP3. EMI, Sony, Universal and Warner are all believed to have linked their music to the service.

Apple names the latest older Macs to head for the graveyard - official
Apple has updated its list of Mac and other products it considers vintage and/or obsolete. The company will cease providing any product support or spare parts for these models from next month.
The list pretty much underlines that the PowerPC Mac is extinct, leaving few PowerPC models in the frame. Apple includes products discontinued over five but less than seven years ago as ‘Vintage’. Thanks to Hardmac for the info.

HP unveils $300 multi-touch LCD
HP at mid-day updated its Compaq displays with one of its first mainstream multi-touch displays. The 21.5-inch L2105tm has a built-in optical sensor that recognizes two-point touch input in operating systems that support it but can still accept input from an included stylus for artwork or other more precise apps. To help, the display is specifically designed for touch and has a fixed-height panel that won't shift around in mid-use.

CRTC sets net neutrality rules for Canada, allows throttling as 'last resort'
The FCC may be yet to act on Chairman Genachowski's proposed net neutrality rules, but the agency's Canadian counterpart, the CRTC, has made a fairly significant ruling of its own on the matter today, and it seems like it may have manged to disappoint folks on both sides of the debate in the process. The short of it is that the CRTC will allow internet service providers to practice "traffic shaping" (a.k.a. bandwidth throttling), but only as a "last resort," and only after it has issued a warning that the throttling will take place (30 days in advance for regular users, and 60 days for wholesale customers). In an interesting knowledge base article, Apple clears up one of the age old computing confusions. Namely, what is the difference between a disc and a disk? While there is no ground-breaking revelations in the article, I found it to be noteworthy. Often computer terms are mixed up or misused. The details of T-Mobile's mysterious Project Dark definitely seem to be congealing around retooled handset billing and a set of new plans, and it looks like TmoNews might have the first word here on the all-important subject of plan pricing. Even More Plus, which would be contract-free and offer new handset FlexPay over four installments, is apparently tracking for a $79.99 all-you-can-eat package, $69.99 with 1,000 voice minutes, or $49.99 with unlimited voice and no data. Intel quietly adds 3.2GHz Core i7 desktop chip
A rumor from this summer has been confirmed, as Intel quietly updated its Core i7 chip range with a new flagship offering, the 3.2GHz i7 960. Based on the Bloomfield core, the chip can be overclocked to 3.46GHz when the Turbo Boost feature shuts down one or more cores. The 45nm chip otherwise has an 8MB L3 cache, a 4.8GTps (gigatransfers per second) Quick Path interface and a peak 130W power use.

ARM Cortex-A5 brings multi-core to budget devices
ARM used its presence at TechCon3 today to unveil a new processor architecture built to speed up lower-cost handhelds. The Cortex-A5 is about twice as power-efficient as older budget designs but shares many of the same foundations as fast processors like the Cortex-A8 found in the iPhone 3GS, including the NEON vector instructions that boost media and some other tasks. It can work either as a very low-power single-core design or scale up to quad-core for more demanding devices.

App Store approaching 100,000 active titles
Apple has almost reached another important psychological milestone when it comes to the App Store, a tracking website claims. The store is said to be nearing over 100,000 active titles, scattered across a number of different categories. During its fourth-quarter results call, Apple cited only a figure of more than 85,000 apps; the current tally is already over 91,000, but Apple may be holding back in order to make a more dramatic announcement.

Three-wheeled eRinGo car concept: no thanks
It's hard to hold the designers of concept cars accountable -- so few ever come close to seeing the light of day, and they are, after all -- concepts. That said, the eRinGo car is one design we seriously hope never comes to fruition. A two-seater that's capable of converting back and forth between one and three-wheeled driving, depending on the curves of the road ahead, the eRinGo looks like a half-crushed can of Heineken. Not a good thing, in our opinion. That said, we like the two steering wheel concept -- wherein the passenger on either side can take over driving duties -- great if your friends are the agreeable sort willing to hand over the keys at any moment. Windows 7 UK pre-orders set record at Amazon
Advance sales of Windows 7 at Amazon UK set an all-time record, the online retailer said this morning. Pre-orders for the Microsoft OS, which began in July, have been higher than for even the final Harry Potter book and in sheer numbers has only been outweighed by the release of Dan Brown's Lost Symbol. AT&T sues LCD makers for price fixing
AT&T has filed a lawsuit in a federal court in San Francisco on Tuesday against Samsung, LG Display, AU Optronics and other LCD makers for allegedly colluding on fixing the price of display panels in the US. Apple is set to launch a new Apple Store in the Welsh capital of Cardiff, according to an announcement. The St. David's 2 outlet is atypically scheduled to open on a Thursday, specifically October 22nd at 10:30 AM. Apple most often opens stores on Saturdays, and half an hour earlier. ARM shows Mali graphics chip with 720p 3D
ARM at the TechCon3 expo starting today will begin showing working examples of its Mali graphics core. The design is now known to be much faster than most existing mobile graphics and, even with the basic single-core Mali-200, can render modern-looking 3D in 720p at 30 frames per second. In many cases it can use 4X antialiasing to clean up the image without a performance hit.

Mad Money host calls for $300 AAPL price target
The host of CNBC's Mad Money, Jim Cramer, has called for an Apple stock price target of $300. In a recent episode of the program Cramer comments on Apple's fourth-quarter results, citing them as a reason for buying Apple stock despite it already being very expensive, hovering close to $200. Apple allegedly revealed in its results call that it is having a hard time keeping up with demand, not only in terms of the iPhone 3GS but many of its products, including Macs. Such a problem is a good one to have, Cramer suggests.

Lenovo slaps Windows 7 onto ThinkPad SL410 and SL510
Lenovo's ThinkPad SL410 and SL510 managed to sneak out a touch early overseas, but now the outfit is making 'em both official here in the States -- and on the day before the launch of Windows 7, no less. Unfortunately, detailed specifications are nowhere to be found, with Lenovo simply telling us that these will boast 16:9 displays, Core 2 Duo processors, HDMI and VGA outputs, a multitouch trackpad, 3G WWAN, WiFi, Ethernet, optional Bluetooth and Windows 7 runnin' the show. Both rigs can supposedly be ordered today starting at $529, so we guess it's on you to poke around and see if either suit your fancy. Full specs lists are after the break.

EU gewährt Bochumer Ex-Nokia-Mitarbeitern Millionenhilfe
Das Europaparlament hat einem Vorschlag der EU-Kommission zugestimmt, den etwa 1300 ehemaligen Mitarbeitern des geschlossenen Nokia-Werks in Bochum finanzielle Mittel aus dem 2006 eingerichteten Globalisierungsfonds zukommen zu lassen. Apple’s European chief says the company is an agent of disruptive industry change, confirms the company is seeing colossal growth in Europe - and seems a little anxious about iPod nano sales.

HTC Hero a sales success, risks shortages
HTC's Android-based Hero is selling well enough that it's causing supply issues, the company's Asia Pacific VP Jack Tong revealed on Wednesday. Sales in the phone's initial Asia and European launch areas are described as "brisk" enough that demand has put a strain on HTC's production lines and won't see manufacturing catch up until November. The pace is expected to continue at least until early 2010.

Apple Europe boss - success across Europe, concern at iPod nano sales
Apple’s European chief says the company is an agent of disruptive industry change, confirms the company is seeing colossal growth in Europe - and seems a little anxious about iPod nano sales.

RIM today confirmed early slips with a launch for the BlackBerry Bold 9700. The smartphone is a refinement of the 2008-era Bold with a more compact design but a round of improvements, including a higher-resolution 480x360 screen (up from 480x320), a 3.2-megapixel camera (improved from two), and an optical trackpad in place of the more clog-prone trackball. BBC Trust bins universal iPlayer plan
The BBC Trust just made a bad decision, acting to prevent the BBC offering its iPlayer technology to other UK broadcasters.
The BBC had hoped to turn its Adobe AIR application into a standard for UK broadcasters, offering them an alternative, non-US-owned way to bring their UK content to viewers online.
The BBC had proposed that ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 should have access to iPlayer to enable them to compete with other TV companies when the UK switches over to digital TV in 2012.
The Trust said it "supported the principle of sharing the iPlayer more widely" but said the plans would not deliver value to licence-fee payers.

Apple’s iTunes empire seems set to meet a bigger than normal threat, on news former ally Google now plans its own online music service.
Details on Google’s music plan are vague right now, we don’t know if it will be offering a la carte downloads, music streaming, subscription services or what - it’s all open to speculation.
TechCrunch is reporting that multiple sources are discussing the Google plan, with the company “spending the last several weeks securing content for the launch of the service from the major music labels.”
The report suggests the name of the service might be ‘Google Audio’. The service will reportedly be available for US users.

Once again Apple created a big sensation by announcing its quarterly results. They announced a revenue of 9,87 billion dollars with a profit of 1,67 billion.Over this period they sold 3 million Macs, 10,2 million iPods and 7,4 million iPhones. It will be noted that the sales iPod has fallen but that the Touch, with its good margins, sell better and better to the detriment of the remainder of the range that are purely MP3 players.

So TechCrunch has it from multiple sources that a US (at least) music service launch from Google is imminent. Possibly named Google Audio, it's unclear whether the service will stream music from the major labels and/or offer it as downloadable tracks. Satellit WorldView-2 liefert neue Bilder für Online-Kartendienste
DigitalGlobe hat auf dem GeoInt 2009 Symposium in San Antonio erste Bilder veröffentlicht, die der vor knapp zwei Wochen ins All geschossene Satellit WorldView-2 gemacht hat. Apple überarbeitet MacBook
Apple hat das MacBook komplett überarbeitet. Apples neues Einsteiger-Laptop kommt in einem neuen Polycarbonat-Unibody-Gehäuse daher - das erste Mal das Apple ein Unibody nicht mit Alu, sondern mit Polycarbonat, also einem Kunststoff, anfertigt. Doch nicht nur das Unibody-Gehäuse wurde von den Pro-Modellen übernommen, sondern auch der LED-hintergrundbeleuchtete Display, das Multitouch-Glas-Trackpad und der neue, fest-integrierte Akku. Das neue Gehäuse ist zudem aus einer «einzigartigen, rutschfesten Oberfläche», wie Apple es betont.

MacRumors users stumbled upon a note in the Magic Mouse user guide that suggests that an upcoming 10.6.2 will have built in features for the Magic Mouse. Odds and Ends: new wireless keyboard, in-plane switching screen/monitors, dual hard drive Mini, more
We're not sure we can remember any Apple non-event (and few events) with so much new hardware announced. As we look through the announcements, we're finding interesting little updates and new technologies.
One such update is the Apple Wireless Keyboard. Striving for continuous improvement, Apple's Wireless Keyboard now only needs to use two AA Batteries instead of three. This makes it slightly lighter than the previous version. The design is otherwise unchanged.
Apple's new 27" iMacs can be used as monitors for other machines using the Displayport-in slot. While it is hard to imagine needing something like this for computers (the iMacs are pretty fast), these would make a nice gaming monitor or even a nice small-medium sized HDTV display - if That also use DisplayPort. Apple drops MacBook prices for Canadian stores
Coinciding with Appleís latest release of new Macs and accessories, the Canadian stores have made an additional change by dropping the price on its line of MacBook computers by up to $300. On the list are five different MacBook Pros, with the entry-level model dropping from $1,400 to $1,300. The most expensive 17-inch variant, previously available for $2,900, now costs just $2,600. The 13-inch with a 2.53GHz processor dropped by $150 down to $1,600, while the 2.53GHz, 15-inch Pro has been reduced from $2,000 to $1,800.

Homemade GPS puzzle box puts a modern spin on treasure hunts
We'll readily admit that most Arduino mods tend to be exercises in creativity (and eccentricity) with little real world utility, which is why this one piqued our interest. A wedding present conceived of and built by Mikal Hart, the box you see above is set to only open in one particular geographic location, and the puzzle of it is to find out where that might be. Windows Mobile 7 images show touch-friendly interface
An image has surfaced that allegedly shows comparative screenshots between Windows Mobile 6.5 and Windows Mobile 7 interfaces, including several attributes that appear to be more touch-oriented. The screenshots, posted by WMExperts, reportedly originated from an internal mockup used by Microsoft for design planning.

White box follows cursor when running Firefox?
A small thread on the Apple discussion boards talks about a problem one user is having with a small white rectangle appearing over the mouse pointer. It does not follow the pointer, but instead will just appear when the mouse is still and then may persist after the mouse has been moved.

This is frankly a pretty cool little feature of Spring Design's I-swear-I'm-not-Nook-but-oh-the-timing e-reader / Android hybrid, Alex. Browse to whatever web article / Google book / Wikipedia entry you want to enjoy, press the center button, and watch as Alex "prints" the page to the e-reader screen up top for a more comfortable reading experience. News: Vestalife premieres Ladybug II, Firefly, Mantis speakers
Vestalife has announced the launch of three new speaker systems for the iPod and iPhone. The Ladybug II is a slightly larger update to the company’s original Ladybug, with improved bass response thanks to a ported subwoofer, and upgraded electronics. It will sell for $100. MacBook strips off its polycarbonate unibody shell for the expected teardown
That thumbs up means exactly what you think, and just like all the other new MacBook (Pro) models, that "non-removable" battery in the new polycarbonate unibody MacBook is more of a guideline than an actual set of rules. We can only concede that Apple unveiled major new products, without any dedicated special event. You can go back to our previous news, summarizing the new products (here)
Hereafter are our first comments before we can test those new products more in details.
The Mac mini has now been refreshed, and without being a super competitive entry level model, it offers quite some power for the price. Apple agrees that the Mac mini can be used as a perfect home server and released a dedicated model bundles with Mac OS X Server and 2 internal HD. High performance for a low cost and a very low power consumption.
One can complain that the new iMac still feature a 16:9 display, however, Apple released a major update for this class of hardware. The new model is sexy and available at a more aggressive price. Having the option to get a Intel Core i5 or i7 already define what would be the future of

Noise Industries has introduced several new plug-ins that have been added to the FxFactory suite for Final Cut Pro, Motion, Final Cut Express and Adobe After Effects. nVeil is a tool developed by Storek Studio for creating motion and still graphics. Users can build animations by filtering source imagery through vector graphics art based on the SVG format.

Odds and Ends: new wireless keyboard, in-plane switching screen/monitors, dual hard drive Mini, more
We're not sure we can remember any Apple non-event (and few events) with so much more hardware announced. As we look through the announcements, we're finding interesting little updates and new technologies.
One such update is the Apple Wireless Keyboard. Striving for continuous improvement, Apple's Wireless Keyboard now only needs to use two AA Batteries instead of three. The design is otherwise unchanged.
Apple's new iMacs can be used as monitors for other machines. While it is hard to imagine needing something like this for computers (the iMacs are pretty fast), these would make a nice gaming monitor or even a nice small-medium sized HDTV display. Also FYI, the 27" iMac with its 2560x1440 display costs $100 LESS than Apple's 2560x1600 30" display alone. We'r enot so sure this thing will be around much longer eith

Physicists calculate the end of Moore's Law, clearly don't believe in Moore's Law
If you're looking for pundits with an end date for Moore's Law, you don't have to look far. You also don't have to look far to find a gaggle of loonies who just knew the world was ending in Y2K, so make of that what you will. The latest duo looking to call the demise of the processor mantra that has held true for two score comes from Boston University, with physicists Lev Levitin and Tommaso Toffoli asserting that a quantum limit would be achieved in around 75 to 80 years.
