Microsoft jabs Apple's iPhone app rejection policies
The Windows Mobile development team today indirectly criticized Apple with a video (available below) promoting Windows Marketplace for Mobile. The spoof makes fun of Apple's tendency to reject certain iPhone apps and allow novelties, and instead portrays imaginary apps that Microsoft would have rejected, such as ones that would provide a fake mustache or that regularly shock the owner. Apple isn't mentioned directly in the roughly two-minute spot.

Lenovo sneaks out IdeaPad U550 laptop, in brown only
Lenovo has a habit of slipping out products without much fanfare (or even a decent picture), and it looks like it's done it again with its new IdeaPad U550 laptop, which gets out just in time for the Windows 7 rush. As you might expect, there isn't a ton to get excited about here, but the laptop is relatively lightweight for one with a 15.6-inch screen (just 5.29 pounds), and it settles nicely in the mid-range of Lenovo's offering in terms of specs. Active intros Predator-X7 SSDs with USB support
Active Media Products on Tuesday announced it has released a new 2.5-inch solid state drive series, the Predator-X7. All sport the Jmicron JM612 controller, which supports a USB 2.0 and therefore makes it easier to clone data from older drives and upgrade from a hard drive to the new Active Media SSD. Barnes & Noble nook's first close-up
There she blows, we'll be getting hands-on and try to scrap together some impressions if they let us touch it once this Q&A is done. The device is a bit thicker than some, and certainly looks minimal up front. The LCD is nice, but not overly bright, and that's about all we spotted before it was snatched away. Verizon launches Mac version of FiOS Media Manager
Verizon has introduced a Mac version of Media Manager, its media extender software for FiOS TV subscribers. The program is meant exclusively for FiOS DVR set-tops, and lets users listen to iTunes music on a TV, including specified playlists. Images can meanwhile be shared out of iPhoto libraries, viewed by event and/or in slideshow form, the latter with music if assigned in advance.

New MacBook Unpacked Too
After the iMac, Engadget also released photos of unpacking the new MacBook.
It looks less bulgy than the previous model, and fit better with the other MacBook Pro models. The notebook offers from Apple have maybe never been so complete and rational than today.

EU lands deal with iTunes, more for pan-Euro music
The European Commission today reached a roundtable agreement with several music stores and labels to ensure more widely distributed music for the continent. Apple, Amazon, BEUC, EMI, Nokia, PRS for Music, SACEM, STIM, and Universal now say they will work with the Commission to desegregate music licensing in European Union countries and have labels produce licenses that work across multiple if not all member states. They will also more freely exchange information so that companies can get rights outside of a musician's home country.

HiPhone F320: 'a rotary phone and an iPod nano walk into a bar...'
With a name like HiPhone, it has to be good, right? Totally. The outfit famous for knocking off RIM's BlackBerry Storm in impressive fashion is back, this time with a psychedelic mishmash that could make even the most hardened soul chuckle once or twice. The F320 is -- as you can so clearly see above -- a terribly funny combination of iPod nano and rotary phone, and while we wouldn't trust the specifications for a minute, we're told that it's a dual-band GSM handset with a built-in multimedia player, FM tuner, camera, 2.6-inch touchscreen and Bluetooth. Kaufman: Apple Q4 profits based on high-end products
People buying higher-end products are largely responsible for Apple's profitable Q4 results, says Kaufman Bros. analyst Shaw Wu. Apple generated $1.82 in EPS for investors, off $9.9 billion in revenue; both figures are well above prior Kaufman predictions, and still further above Apple's own guidance. Wu attributes the performance to several factors, such as Snow Leopard, cost discipline and component prices that were lower than expected.

Vestalife has announced the launch of three new speaker systems for the iPod and iPhone. Windows 7 Media Center's upgraded Netflix Watch Instantly interface now available
Those already upgraded to Windows 7 ahead of Thursday's launch events (no, we're not coming to your party) should find a Netflix button parked under the Movies section in Media Center starting today. Clicking it revealed a slightly smoother install process than the initial Netflix upgrade for Vista users last spring, then it's off to the refreshed interface we first spotted at CEDIA -- extender support or HD streaming is still out. Google making own Android phone, netbook?
Intending to take control of its phone experience, Google may be readying its own Android phone and a computer to go with it, multiple sources said on Tuesday. Analyst Ashok Kumar of Northeast Securities claims in a research note that it's expected Google will launch a self-branded phone before the end of the year and could follow that up with a netbook in early 2010. Both would use Android 2.0, but the smartphone would use a regular Qualcomm cellular chipset while the netbook would use Qualcomm's high-speed Snapdragon processor.

Apple AirPort Extreme, Time Capsule get speed boost
Alongside the announcements of new Macs and the Magic Mouse, Apple on Tuesday quietly introduced updated AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule devices. Like its predecessor, the new AirPort Extreme base station utilizes the same dual-band communication on the 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies. A redesigned antenna, however, is claimed to improve data speeds by up to 50 percent, while extending the effective range by 25 percent.

Engadget wins the iMac/Magic Mouse unboxing race
Seriously, pretty fast Engadget.
Some quick observations on the new Magic Mouse: It looks thinner than any mouse I've used before. Will it feel like one of those mice that fits into your laptop's PC card slot? And I wonder how the right and left clicking action will be. Remember, Apple isn't 100% awesome when it comes to mice. Anyone remember Jobs unveiling the "Puck Mouse" as the next greatest thing? Even the Mighty Mouse ball never worked perfectly for me - I reverted to a Logitech when the ball died.
Anyway, I'll judge it when we get to play with it - which I am excited about.

First Canon EOS-1D MKIV footage on display, 5D MKII will join the fun with new 24 / 25 fps firmware next year
Double good news on the Canon front. First off we've got sample footage shot with a brand new Canon EOS-1D Mark IV, which does a good job of showing what the camera can handle under low lighting conditions, as well as serving as a poignant morality tale for skaters, who should never get in cars with strangers. But perhaps even more exciting is word that Canon is developing its own firmware update for the 5D Mark II that will take it into the indie filmmaker-friendly territory of 24 fps and 25 fps -- something that's always been assumed doable since the camera already shoots at 30. Details are scarce, and the firmware won't hit until the "first half of 2010," but if anything it should up the

Barnes & Noble's dual-screen Nook reader official
Barnes and Noble lived up to promises today and launched the Nook, its own e-book reader. The device is unique in having both a six-inch E-Ink display and a 3.5-inch color touchscreen LCD that serves to navigate and browse books. Also unlike most other readers in its class, it has both 802.11g Wi-Fi as well as AT&T-driven 3G to download books from Barnes & Noble's online bookstore.

Apple intros new Mac mini family, including media server model
Confirming speculation, Apple is introducing new model Mac minis.
There’s three in all, including a 2.26Ghz and 2.53GHz model with 160GB and 320GB drives respectively. The third model offers a 1 terrabyte drive and is configured as a media server.
Starting at £499 (inc. VAT), or XXX in the US, the entry level Mac mini hosts a 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 2GB of DDR3 1066 MHz memory, a 160GB hard drive, five USB 2.0 ports, FireWire 800, NVIDIA GeForce 9400M integrated graphics and a SuperDrive.
Higher in the range, the £649 (inc. VAT), or XXX in the US Mac mini features a 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 4GB of memory and a larger 320GB hard drive.

AirPort Extreme and Time Capsules add MIMO technology
Another update lost in all the chaos today is the new multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology added to the Airport Express and Time capsule.
According to Apple, those improvements in antenna design give you up to 50 percent better Wi-Fi performance and up to 25 percent better range than with the previous-generation AirPort Extreme Base Station.

Apple has updated the MacBook range, introducing a new, durable polycarbonate unibody design featuring an LED display, a glass Multi-Touch trackpad and the same built-in battery as found on the MacBook Pro, offering seven hours battery life.

Wow - that was worth the wait. Apple today introduced new iMacs, now equipped with 21.5-inch and 27-inch LED-backlit displays. The new Macs also ship with the all-new wireless Magic Mouse (more follows).

Motorola 'Calgary' to bring BLUR to Verizon, Droid not looking worried
The Droid's shaping up to be a beast of an Android phone -- well played, Verizon -- but Motorola's banking much of its future on its MOTOBLUR platform, which the Droid curiously lacks (though Android 2.0 adds at least some of BLUR's functionality back in). Barnes & Noble bringt E-Book-Reader
Auch wenn es so aussieht: Das Ding auf dem Bild rechts ist kein neues Apple-Produkt, sondern der neu vorgestellte E-Book-Reader Nook von Barnes und Noble.
Die US-Buchandelskette will es offensichtlich wissen und sticht Amazons Kindle in diversen Punkten aus. So hat der Nook zusätzlich zum augenfreundlichen E-Ink-Display einen kleinen Touchbildschirm mit Farbdarstellung für die Bedienung. Der Speicherplatz im Gerät kann durch SD-Karten erweitert werden.
Barnes & Noble bietet in den USA über eine Million Buchtitel für das Gerät an, darunter 500.000 kostenlose E-Books. Nach Deutschland dürfte es das Gerät mangels Filialen der Kette vorerst nicht schaffen, frischen Wind in die E-Book-Szene bringt der Reader aber allemal.

AirPort Extreme and Time Capsules add MIMO technology
Another update lost in all the chaos today is the new multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology added to the Airport Express and Time capsule.
According to Apple, those improvements in antenna design give you up to 50 percent better Wi-Fi performance and up to 25 percent better range than with the previous-generation AirPort Extreme Base Station.

Yesterday we discussed a problem where people were not able to invoke the large-type window for displaying full-screen contact information via the Address Book dashboard widget. While one possibility could be the aforementioned problems with the widget and Dashboard itself, since this problem has to do only with the Address Book widget for many people it indicates an error with the Address Book components, including the framework, the Address Book application, and the widget itself.

Apple today brought out its second update in a year for the Mac mini and changed its focus significantly at the high end. The new line scales up to a 2.53GHz Core 2 Duo and, in a special configuration, comes with Mac OS X Snow Leopard Server pre-installed as well as with a second hard drive in place of the optical drive; the option gives those running clusters a much more capable computer. All versions have more RAM and hard drive storage than their predecessors.

Confirming speculation, Apple is introducing new model Mac minis.
There’s three in all, including a 2.26Ghz and 2.53GHz model with 160GB and 320GB drives respectively. The third model offers a 1 terrabyte drive and is configured as a media server.
Starting at £499 (inc. VAT), or XXX in the US, the entry level Mac mini hosts a 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 2GB of DDR3 1066 MHz memory, a 160GB hard drive, five USB 2.0 ports, FireWire 800, NVIDIA GeForce 9400M integrated graphics and a SuperDrive.

Wow - that was worth the wait. Apple today introduced new iMacs, now equipped with 21.5-inch and 27-inch LED-backlit displays. The new Macs also ship with the all-new wireless Magic Mouse (more follows).
More on the displays - these feature a new edge-to-edge glass design, while the body of these models features a seamless all aluminium enclosure. They offer a 16:9 aspect ratio. Prices on the new models start at £949 (inc. VAT) , or XXX in the US.

Speck updates cases for iPod nano 5G, iPod touch 2G/3G
Speck has announced three case updates, covering the fifth-generation iPod nano and the second- and third-generation iPod touches: these fall under PixelSkin, CandyShell and Fitted lines. The new PixelSkin is a soft silicone case designed for the Nano, and provides protection against bumps and scrapes. Grip curves prevent slipping, and openings are present for access to ports, controls and the camera. The case comes only in a black color at the moment, with a pricetag of $20.

Acer neoTouch S200 reviewed, not recommended
After what seemed like a full lifetime of waiting, Acer's recently-launched neoTouch S200 is finally making its way into some reviewing hands. The fine young cannibals over at Phone Arena have just given it the head to toe treatment, and we have to say, we're glad they've done the dirty work for us. This WinMo 6.5 handset, according to their impressions, seems to be a not fully baked affair -- sluggishness and random crashing are both reported, as is a rather serious sounding call quality issue. Apple räumt Überhitzungsprobleme beim iPod Nano ein

Lexar intros 600x CF memory card for pros
Lexar Media on Tuesday announced the release of its Professional 600x CompactFlash (CF) memory card, which allows for 90MBps transfer speeds using the UDMA 6 standard. With the announcement, Lexar is the second manufacturer to offer such speeds in a CF card, as SanDisk already offers a 90MBps product range. SanDisk offers up to 64GB capacities, while Lexar makes 8GB, 16GB and 32GB cards.

EyeTV update arrives in App Store

Analysts raise estimates on Apple Q4 results
Apple did extremely well in its fiscal fourth quarter, say analysts with Needham and UBS. Needham's Charlie Wolf describes 7.4 million in iPhone shipments as "especially impressive," given that the device still has a fairly new install base. Wolf estimates that approximately 5.5 million of the units are fresh activations, rather than upgrades.

EyeTV 1.0.1 reaches the App Store.
It was here, it went away, it came back and now it has been replaced.
What are we talking about? The EyeTV app, of course. Elgato have just let us know that EyeTV App version 1.0.1 is now available.
Now, the company have provided us with a list of fixes in this version, but we all know its main aim is to fix the legacy programming code left in the shipping product which enabled savvy users to stream TV shows over a 3G connection.

Apple 'optimistic' to extend iTunes in Europe in the next year
Apple will extend the iTunes Store into many more European countries in the coming year, following a critical meeting with European competition commission regulators.
Following yesterday's meeting, European authorities released a joint statement in collaboration with Apple, music rights bodies and smaller online music operators detailing a series of agreed principles that should make online music sales in Europe more consumer friendly.
Apple and others agreed to the statement during a round table meeting in Europe yesterday, the fourth meeting of the Roundtable on the Online Distribution of Music, chaired by European Commissioner for Competition Neelie Kroes.
Amazon, BEUC, EMI, Nokia, PRS for Music, SACEM, STIM and Universal also took part.

DoubleTwist gains iPhone sync as Apple gets Twitter-friendly for iTunes
While Apple’s iTunes team becomes ever more serious about Twitter, DVD John’s DoubleTwist has reintroduced sync support for the iPhone and iPod touch (Windows) within its latest update.
DoubleTwist 2.4 for Windows is available now and introduced numerous new features, including playlist creation and sync, library search, and a persistent DoubleTwist library. “While we'll still access your iTunes and/or Windows Media Player [collections] you can now add folders/directories from anywhere on your system to use as your DoubleTwist library for syncing and transferring to your device(s),” the company said.

Interesting notes from Taiwan this morning as we sift through the many miles of rapturous reporting that Apple’s business plan (make good products, don’t brag, respect customers enough to give them things they enjoy using and so make money) continues to work, we come across yet another hint at the company’s future plans.

Gartner: Das schlimmste Jahr in der Geschichte der IT geht zu Ende
Die Marktforscher von Gartner prognostizieren, dass IT-Ausgaben im kommenden Jahr wieder zunehmen. Microsoft restoring some Sidekick data
Microsoft and T-Mobile today said they have begun restoring Sidekick data and have offered a guide for owners. The two now say they can restore contacts they might have lost that already existed on October 1st. Those Sidekick owners who created contacts to supplement or replace entries lost during the major outage can either keep both on-device and online sets, merge them or use only the set originating from the cellphone.

Windows Mobile 6.5.1 fixing touch elements?
Although Microsoft has only just released Windows Mobile 6.5 on shipping phones, the company is already readying a noticeable fix to add many major touch elements to the platform, unofficial previews of interim builds show. A 6.5.1 update appearing in test versions has completely dropped the top-mounted Start menu and instead has one at the bottom with a button much easier to hit with a finger than before. Many of the other context-sensitive buttons, checkboxes and radio buttons have also been made larger.

Apple vs. Psystar: Beide Firmen beantragen beschleunigtes Verfahren

Profitabelstes Quartal in der Apple-Geschichte
Apple gab gestern die Ergebnisse des vierten Quartals im Geschäftsjahr 2009 bekannt, das am 26. September 2009 endete. Im Q409 erzielte Apple einen Umsatz von 9,87 Milliarden US-Dollar sowie einen Netto-Gewinn von 1,67 Milliarden US-Dollar. Im Vorjahresquartal wurde ein Umsatz von 7,9 Milliarden US-Dollar bzw. ein Netto-Gewinn von 1,14 Milliarden US-Dollar erzielt. Die Bruttogewinnspanne lag bei 36,6 Prozent, verglichen zu 34,7 Prozent im Vorjahresquartal. Der Nicht-US-Anteil am Umsatz betrug in diesem Quartal 46 Prozent.
10.200.000 iPods sind im zurückliegenden Quartal über den Ladentisch gegangen, das sind acht Prozent weniger verglichen zu Q4/2008. Im zurückliegenden Quartal hat Apple 7.400.000 iPhones verkauft, sieben Prozent mehr als im Vergleich zum Vorjahresquartal und mehr als überhaupt je zuvor.

TomTom in-dash GPS supports iPods, FM
TomTom this morning changed its usual formula with the launch of an installable in-dash GPS unit. The GO I-90 occupies two DIN slots in any car and provides a large touchscreen with both TomTom's staple GPS as well as media features the company normally has no reason to use. Owners of iPods can plug the Apple devices into a USB port to both play and charge their devices; the unit also has generic MP3 player support and its own FM radio tuner.

DoubleTwist gains iPhone sync as Apple gets Twitter-friendly for iTunes
While Apple’s iTunes team becomes ever more serious about Twitter, DVD John’s DoubleTwist has reintroduced sync support for the iPhone and iPod touch (Windows) within its latest update.

Apple 'optimistic' to extend iTunes in Europe in the next year
Apple will extend the iTunes Store into many more European countries in the coming year, following a critical meeting with European competition commission regulators.
Following yesterday's meeting, European authorities released a joint statement in collaboration with Apple, music rights bodies and smaller online music operators detailing a series of agreed principles that should make online music sales in Europe more consumer friendly.
Apple and others agreed to the statement during a round table meeting in Europe yesterday, the fourth meeting of the Roundtable on the Online Distribution of Music, chaired by European Commissioner for Competition Neelie Kroes.

Last Night Joel Hewitt, the developer of the iPhone Facebook App, tweeted that a 3.03 bugfix update was in the pipe with a new 3.1 version right around the corner. The big feature in 3.1? Push Notifications. Now every time one of your 300 "friends" updates the status of their meal, you'll be notified (OK, maybe you can set it only to push direct messages - fine).

TomTom car kit demoed with 1st Generation iPhone (and iPod touch?)
We first postulated that it was possible to use the iPod touch and original iPhone with the TomTom car kit (which includes a GPS module) back in August. Mac4ever seemed to have confirmed this a month later, but Apple to this day only advertises that the iPhone 3G and 3GS are capable of using the TomTom kit. Today the Gemans at iFun.de have YouTube proof (we think!) that the kit does work with original iPhones (and iPods?).

Apple Q4: Mac sales up 17%, iPhone sales hit 7.4m
Apple today revealed Q4 revenue of $9.87 billion and a net quarterly profit of $1.67 billion, or $1.82 per diluted share.
This contrasts with revenue of $7.9 billion and net quarterly profit of $1.14 billion, or $1.26 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. Gross margin was 36.6 percent, up from 34.7 percent in the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 46 percent of the quarter’s revenue.
The company confirmed what many industry observers hadn’t expected, that it is continuing to exercise the subscription accounting treatment required by GAAP, presumably while it implements new systems which don't assess income in this manner.
For the present, though, Apple recognizes revenue and cost of goods sold for iPhone and Apple TV over their estimated economic lives.

Apple execs book flight time for mystery product, 'not iPhone', bafflement follows
We’re deciphering Apple executives and their fourth quarter statements right now - but the initial take away at this stage is the company’s mysterious admission that “air freight costs” are set to rise "abnormally" in the company's first quarter.
Now, we know we’re all incredibly curious as to just what Apple’s hatching up for its future product road map, but company executives have so far declined to disclose just what it is they’re planning to send into flight. Apple had a pretty good quarter. How good? Even with bullish estimates all around, today's news shot up Apple's stock 6.5% from its 189 close to well over 200 (202 currently). For those who might not think 6.5% is a big deal, that is over $10 Billion in market cap.

AirPort: Neue Basisstation in Kürze?
In der Datenbank der FCC, der Zulassungsbehörde für Kommikationsgeräte, sind gestern zwei weitere Apple-Geräte vermerkt worden. Offenbar handelt es sich um zwei AirPort-Basisstationen mit den Modellnummern A1354 und A1355, im Dokument bezeichnet als 802.11. a/b/g/n 3X3 Access Point.
Die Bezeichnung scheint einen Hinweis auf die MIMO-Architektur hinzuweisen, die drei Übertragungs- und drei Empfangskanäle bereitstellt.

Heute neue Produkte von Apple?
Um so näher Weihnachten kommt (immerhin nur noch gut 9 Wochen), um so angespannter scheint die Apple-Gerüchteküche zu sein. Seit Wochen werden neue Hardware-Produkte von Apple erwartet. Das lukrative Weihnachtsgeschäft steht unmittelbar bevor - und Apple hat diesen Herbst noch keine Desktop-Geräte aktualisiert. Bisher war dies eine art Tradition im Herbst - Apple frischte jeweils rechtzeitig zum Weihnachtsgeschäft seine Lineups auf. Die Desktop-Computer (iMac, Mac mini und Mac Pro) wurden allesamt seit März dieses Jahres nicht mehr überarbeitet.

Sensaris isn't exactly doing itself any favors with its FCC-style photography, but the company's new MoveIt Bluetooth motion sensor does look to be a fairly interesting little device, even if it's not quite as convenient as an accelerometer built into your phone. Bericht: Berufung im Pirate-Bay-Prozess auf Sommer 2010 verschoben
Einem Bericht von The Local zufolge wird das Berufungsverfahren gegen die vier Betreiber des Torrent-Trackers "The Pirate Bay" wohl erst im Sommer 2010 eröffnet werden. Apple plant neue günstige Produkte
Mit der Bekanntgabe der Unternehmenszahlen für das abgelaufene Quartal hat Apple auch Andeutungen über zukünftige Produkte gemacht. Demnach plant man für das aktuelle Geschäftsjahr neue Produkte, die allerdings den bisher überdurchschnittlich guten Gewinn schmälern werden. Alright, so ASUS' Eee PC 1005HA is certainly decent enough as it is, but we can't help but think that the company is stretching things a bit with its new "business edition" of the netbook. Apparently, all that's needed to earn that designation is Windows XP Professional for an OS, and a standard 2GB of RAM, which no respectable businessperson would ever be without. Canon tops range with 1080p-ready EOS 1D Mark IV
Canon tonight finished its last major DSLR update of the past year and launched the EOS 1D Mark IV as its highest-end camera. The new model jumps from a 10-megapixel APS-H (near full-frame) sensor to a 16-megapixel, 1.3X crop unit and upgrades to twin DIGIC IV processors. The boost gives it 1080p video at 30 frames per second, or 720p at 60 frames per second, while still shooting full-quality still images at up to 10 frames per second. MLC Memory Chips Featuring 30,000 Writing Cycles
One of the main criticism against MCL memory chips (most for specifications but not really for everyday usage) is the limited writing cycles (around 10,000) supported by the chips currently found in almost all SSD models. After having completed 10,00 cycles, cells are ignored by the controller as tagged as "unreliable". Micron announced that one can improve the MLC chips cells, and especially the quality dedicated to corporate, claiming now 30,000 cycles. Engraved at 34 nm, this new MCL memory will enter mass production in Q1 2010. Intel already used in its SSD models, memory chips cells produced by Micron, and we bet that SAnta Clara's Giant will most likely be the first customer for the first batch of 30,000 cycles ready MCL chips. This could also change the standard specification of MCL-based SSD to 30,000 cycles.
So, let's do some math. Let's consider a 160 GB SDD, able to deliver 200 MB/s steady writing speed. It takes 800 seconds to fill it up. So, quick extrapolation would give us

Apple recognizes a risk of overheating of the first iPod nanos
Apple published a technical note concerning the first nano iPod marketed between September 2005 and December 2006.
They describe the "rare cases of overheating" being able to damage these devices, to deform them and prevent them from functioning. They call on those who have encountered this problem to contact Apple Care as soon as possible. The battery will then be exchanged free if it is not too late. This recognition follows the investigations of the Japanese authorities which had listed some cases of overheating as of these MP3 players and had told Apple to fix it, which is now the case.

Is Apple Testing iPhone 4G and Associated Networks with Verizon?
A rumor indicates that Apple would be testing for around 2 months a prototype of its iPhone 4G on Verizon's networks. It would be a revanche or come-back for this US carrier as it originally did not want to adopt the iPhone 2G and team up with Apple. Samsung and Uni-Pixel team up for better, cheaper TMOS displays
Uni-Pixel has developed a new display technology that could succeed LCD and LED displays, and if all goes according to plan we might see something come to market as soon as next year. Opcuity uses one layer of MEMS film in in a TMOS (multiplexed optical shutter) device for results that are said to be ten times brighter and sixty percent cheaper to manufacture than LCDs (which use five layers). Since TMOS displays are very similar to LCDs, existing manufacturing lines can be used -- lowering start-up costs and rescuing older assembly lines in the process. According to the company's CFO, the manufacturing process "subtracts from existing LCD lines--you just need to remove some equipment that is no longer needed."

Microsoft to open Mission Viejo store Oct. 29
Microsoft today confirmed more of its retail opening plans with sites for its first two stores. In addition to confirming the Scottsdale opening this Thursday, the Windows creator now says the Mission Viejo, California store is due to open a week later, on October 29th. It should partly mirror the Arizona opening with Justin Bieber performing a concert at the second location for the first 1,000 to ask for free tickets.

Apple 3x3 access point hits the FCC with 5.8GHz bands
The FCC did let one Apple product through to its online database tonight, although nothing that'll excite you quite like magical mice or revved up iMacs. Instead we're looking at models A1354 and A1355, a pair of 802.11 a/b/g/n 3x3 access points with the exact same, nondescript label picture that indicates some heft to the unit. There's not much to say here, although the A1354 had a revision on the antenna gain in the 5.8GHz band. At this point it's just another thing to add to that penciled-in list of rumored Apple announcements for tomorrow morning.

Apple confirms new Paris, NYC store openings in November
Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer confirmed plans to open several new retail locations in France and New York City. The executive, speaking at an investor conference call, mentioned that the company is finally ready to reveal the store at Carrousel du Louvre in Paris. Although the project was initially acknowledged by Apple in June of last year, reports early this year suggested construction had begun to stagnate.

Barnes & Noble reader to match Kindle price?
Barnes and Noble's rumored dual-screen e-book reader gained credibility Monday night with the leak of a paper ad in advance (subscription required). A full-page placement due for the New York Times' Book Review next Sunday labels the reader as the Nook and says it will ship for $259, reaching the same price as the US Kindle. It also makes a direct reference to the previously leaked e-book lending feature, which would let users temporarily give rights to a book to someone else.

We’re deciphering Apple executives and their fourth quarter statements right now - but the initial take away at this stage is the company’s mysterious admission that “air freight costs” are set to rise "abnormally" in the company's first quarter.

Dane-Elec will release on December 11th a new line of external HDs sporting the USB 3.0 interface.
3.5" models will offer storage space ranging from 500 GB to 2 TB.
2.5" models will offer storage space up to 640 GB for plater-based HD and up to 160 GB for SSD-based drive.
As the USB 3.0 could accommodate it, Dane-Elec will install Intel X25-M SSD of 80 or 160 GB, offering up to 250 MB/S in reading mode. Apple teases lower-priced products for fall
Apple during the conference call discussing its record quarterly results this summer provided multiple hints of price drops on its products in the near future. When asked during a Q&A session about its prediction of lower gross margins for the fall, the company warned that products in the future will have lower margins and repeatedly emphasized cost as an issue. Apple hat für das zurückliegende vierte Quartal des Geschäftsjahres 2009 erneut Rekordzahlen vermeldet. Der Umsatz des Unternehmens wurde im Vergleich zum Vorjahresquartal um knapp zwei Milliarden auf 9,87 Milliarden US-Dollar gesteigert. 46 Prozent dieses Umsatzes wurde außerhalb er USA generiert.
Insgesamt hat Apple im vierten Quartal des Fiskaljahres 2009 mehr als drei Millionen Macs ausgeliefert, 17 Prozent mehr als im Vorjahr. Bei den iPhones wurde ein Zuwachs von sieben Prozent auf insgesamt 7,4 Millionen Stück verzeichnet. Das sind mehr iPhones und Macs als jemals zuvor in einem Quartal der Firmengeschichte.Lediglich die Verkaufszahlen der iPods waren im Vergleich zum Vorjahresquartal rückläufig.

Detailed Q4 results show desktop declines, iPhone leaps
As a part of its fourth-quarter financial results, Apple has also produced detailed segment information. Revenue in the Americas is up 20 percent year-over-year, and now sits at $4.297 billion. European revenue has jumped a substantial 45 percent to $2.491 billion, while Japan has grown 36 percent to reach $434 million. Worldwide retail revenues are up 9 percent to $1.867 billion.
