Unofficial patch lets you hang up Palm Pre calls by closing the slider
You know how easy and natural it is to hang up a call on a cellphone by sliding it closed or flipping it shut? It's a small satisfaction that's been lost on touchscreen-only phones, but it would seem to still make sense on something like, say, the Palm Pre -- just not to Palm, it seems. Well, it looks like unofficial patch maker KeyToss has now finally stepped in and done what Palm hasn't, and produced a patch that does nothing more than let you end a call by closing the slider on your Pre. Apple beats forecasts in Q4 financial results
Ahead of an upcoming conference call, Apple has posted the results of its fiscal fourth quarter for 2009. The company is claiming $9.87 billion in revenue, for a net profit of $1.67 billion, or $1.82 per diluted share. In Q4 2008 quarterly revenue was $7.9 billion, with $1.14 billion in profit and $1.26 per diluted share.

Dell speeds up Adamo to match MacBook Air
Dell has quietly upgraded the Adamo 13 to better compete against other ultra-thin notebooks like the MacBook Air. The high-end Desire model reviewed here has had its ultra-low voltage 1.4GHz Core 2 Duo replaced with a much faster 2.1GHz Core 2 Duo S like that found in Apple's faster notebook. It has also had its solid-state drive double in capacity to 256GB and Windows 7 replace Vista as the stock OS.

Apple Q4: Mac sales up 17%, iPhone sales hit 7.4m
Apple today revealed Q4 revenue of $9.87 billion and a net quarterly profit of $1.67 billion, or $1.82 per diluted share.
This contrasts with revenue of $7.9 billion and net quarterly profit of $1.14 billion, or $1.26 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. Gross margin was 36.6 percent, up from 34.7 percent in the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 46 percent of the quarter’s revenue.
The company confirmed what many industry observers hadn’t expected, that it continues to put into practise the subscription accounting treatment required by GAAP, presumably while it implements new systems which don’t look to income this way,
As such, however, recognizes revenue and cost of goods sold for iPhone and Apple TV over their estimated economic lives.

Apple sued over Ethernet patent infringement
Apple and several other computer makers have been targeted in a patent infringement lawsuit involving Ethernet technology. The plaintiff, US Ethernet Innovations, claims the companies have been using intellectual property contained in at least one four patents originally issued to 3Com between 1994 and 1998.

Apple's fiscal Q4 2009 conference call is just about to begin, but the press release is already out and about. Wondering how Jobs and Company did? Precisely like you thought they would: they're making out like gangbusters over there. While the rest of the world slowly sees profits inching back up, Apple's relishing in $1.67 billion worth of net profit it pulled in from $9.87 billion in revenue. Snow Leopard is faster than Windows 7
CNET compared the performances of Snow Leopard and Windows 7 on a MacBook Pro from 2008.
As shown in the graph (where the shorter bars correspond to a quicker machine), Mac OS X is much better in the majority of the uses. The same applies and even more on the level of battery life where under OS X the battery held 111 minutes against 77 under Windows.
On the other hand, and without surprise, it is better to have Windows 7 to play games and even under Cinebench Windows takes again the lead. There are some aspects offered by Windows 7 that are superior, such as its very fast startup times. However, as a whole, it is still rather far behind Mac OS X.

TI promises very low-power Bluetooth chip
Texas Instruments will showcase an ultra low-power coin cell demo using the upcoming Bluetooth low energy open standard on Tuesday at a Bluetooth conference in Munich. The device will use TI's future CC2540 single-mode system-on-chip, which TI says will consume so little power that it will allow wireless to run on devices for very long periods of time. Among other examples, it would allow for a small button cell battery to power such a device without recharging for more than a year.

TomTom car kit demoed with 1st Generation iPhone (and iPod touch?)
We first postulated that it was possible to use the iPod touch and original iPhone with the TomTom car kit (which includes a GPS module) back in August. Mac4ever seemed to have confirmed this a month later, but Apple to this day only advertises that the iPhone 3G and 3GS are capable of using the TomTom kit. Today the Gemans at iFun.de have YouTube proof (we think!) that the kit does work with original iPhones (and iPods?).

OCZ's Z-Drive PCI-Express SSD gets exhaustively reviewed

Canon EOS 1D Mark V due tomorrow?
Canon's long rumored replacement for its EOS 1D Mark III pro DSLR could show as early as tomorrow but with multiple surprises in store, more than one source said today. Roku XR adds 802.11n, USB port and a longing for something more
Hard though it may be to believe, the Roku has been rockin' the lives of Netflix fanatics for nearly 1.5 years, and if you were thinking an updated version was in order, you'd be on the right train of thought. Images delivered to us today prove that a refreshed iteration is on the horizon, with the Roku XR (model number N1101) retaining the same overall look and feel as the original but adding in niceties like 802.11n wireless support, a USB socket (presumably for loading up media locally) and a 2.5A power input (as opposed to 1.5A). You can also see that the dedicated reset button has been yanked and the bundled remote is exactly the same;

Facebook.app updates coming soon. Push Notifications to annoy us all
Last Night Joel Hewitt, the developer of the iPhone Facebook App, tweeted that a 3.03 bugfix update was in the pipe with a new 3.1 version right around the corner. The big feature in 3.1? Push Notifications. Now every time one of your 300 "friends" updates the status of their meal, you'll be notified (OK, maybe you can set it only to push direct messages - fine).
Us? We'll take a pass on the Push Notifications but to each their own.

Sprint proves money can solve problems, buys iPCS to settle litigation
Considering Sprint's financial position and the overall credit market, we're not exactly sure where the carrier managed to pick up $831 million, which it promptly used to acquire affiliate iPCS and take on $405 million of net debt. If you'll recall, the aforesaid youngin' was worrying papa way back in May of 2008, and it seems that Sprint has finally had enough of this whole "litigation" thing. Apple discriminating against non-YouTube video services?
Apple is not playing fair in terms of supporting video hosting services beyond YouTube, claims the chief technical officer of Dailymotion. Olivier Poitrey comments that the iPhone edition of Safari relies on a special plug-in for YouTube videos, allowing it to jump straight to H.264-encoded copies. Because of Apple's battery and processor worries, Flash is not supported in any form on iPhones or iPod touches.

ASUS working up BR-HD3 wireless HDMI streamer

Kaufman holds on AAPL estimates ahead of Q4 results
Kaufman Bros. is sticking with its current predictions on Apple performance ahead of the company's fourth-quarter results call, says an analyst for the firm. Shaw Wu notes that although the firm raised its estimates above consensus about two weeks ago, consensus has since raced ahead again -- perhaps too far -- and now sits at $9.2 billion in revenue with EPS of $1.42. O2 touts Palm Pre launch day success
O2's British division today said that the UK launch of the Palm Pre was successful. A spokesperson declined to say how many had been sold but told TechRadar that the carrier sold more Pres on Friday than it normally does all other phones. Analysts are thought to be generally enthusiastic about Apple's fourth-quarter results, set to be announced at 2PM Pacific time on Monday, 5PM Eastern. Thomson Reuters suggests that the company is on average anticipated to record a 17 percent year-over-year rise in revenue to $9.2 billion, producing a 13 percent boost in earnings per share, amounting to $1.42. Google Voice voicemails appearing in public search results
We're not exactly sure what's going on here, but it certainly seems like at least some Google Voice voicemails are being indexed and made publicly available somehow -- if you use "site:https://www.google.com/voice/fm/*" as a search string you get a few pages of what appear to be test messages, but there are a couple eye-opening obvious non-tests scattered in there as well. Dates on these messages range from a couple months ago all the way until yesterday, so this is clearly an ongoing issue -- hopefully Google patches this up awful fast.

Heat diodes give thermal computing a fighting chance
Anyone who has tried their hand at overclocking recognizes just how evil waste heat is, and we're guessing that one Wataru Kobayashi at Waseda University in Japan understands explicitly. He, along with a few colleagues, has recently devised a new diode that allows heat current to travel in one direction but not in the other. The breakthrough essentially paves the way for thermal computing to actually take off, with obvious applications including heat sinks for microprocessors. Kobayashi, who may or may not be able to eat a dozen hot dogs per minute in his spare time, also hopes that his discovery will lead to a thermal transistor, thermal logic gates and a thermal memory. Livescribe on Monday added two new capacities to its Pulse smartpen lineup. Customers can now opt for a 2GB or 4GB model, in addition to the original 1GB smartpen. Just days after the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) finally announced that a North American mobile DTV standard was struck, Samsung has jumped in with what it's calling the planet's first single chip solution designed to handle those very transmissions. Moto Droid hand-designed by Google?
The Motorola Droid may have been designed by Google itself in what could be its best attempt to rival the iPhone, an early hands-on with the phone reveals. While Google has been known to provide input on Android devices like the T-Mobile G1, BGR now says the company had a "direct hand" in the Droid and virtually told Motorola what to build. Die Betreiber von SchülerVZ haben als Reaktion auf die jüngste Datenpanne die Sicherheitsmaßnahmen für das soziale Netzwerk verschärft. Apple testing 4G iPhone on Verizon, a blogger claims
Verizon may be aggressively targeting Apple’s iPhone with its latest Droid ad campaign, but that doesn’t mean the company isn’t attempting to woo Cupertino, at least so it appears on report the next-gen iPhone is already being tested on Verizon’s network.
A report on Fone Frenzy (who?) claims Verizon Wireless CEO, Lowell McAdam has visited Apple HQ “several times”, adding that Apple is testing a CDMA iPhone on the Verizon 4G LTE network.

Whoa, what have we here? It's Alex, the dual-screen e-book reader from Spring Design looking very much like the Barnes and Noble device rumored for a Tuesday launch. It features a 6-inch E-ink EPD (electronic paper display) and 3.5-inch LCD running Google's Android OS for browsing the web or viewing video, audio, photos, and notes. It also packs a removeable SD card, speaker, headphone jack, and WiFi or 3G EVDO/CDMA and GSM radios. An interesting Duet Navigator feature even lets you toggle content captured on the LCD and present it back to the EPD to save on battery life. Marktforscher erwarten starkes Wachstum bei App-Downloads

Datenskandal bei SchülerVZ: Bundesdatenschützer mahnt zur Vorsicht
Der Bundesbeauftragte für den Datenschutz und die Informationsfreiheit, Peter Schaar, hat anlässlich des jüngsten Datenpanne bei SchülerVZ erneut davor gewarnt, persönliche Daten ins Netz zu stellen. In a series of tweets today, iPhone Dev team leader, MuscleNerd, revealed some hacks that might make your iPhone life a little more interesting.
First, there is a baseband hack called whiterat that will allow 2G iPhones to send and recieve photo MMSes. Apple's 3.0 update only enabled MMS on iPhone 3G and 3GS models. Nifty!
Next up is a two-bit (not $.25) baseband hack that will re-enable sweet, sweet tethering on the most recent 3.1.2 iPhon

Wahlweise alleine oder im Bluetooth-Multiplayer-Modus mit bis zu vier Freunden gemeinsam muss man 20 Songs von anerkannten Rock-Größen auf dem iPhone "nachspielen". Dane-Elec intros new line of USB 3.0 external hard drives
Dane-Elec has announced a series of external hard drives, the So SuperSpeed HDDs and SSDs, that will support the upcoming USB 3.0 standard. The drives will provide data transfer speeds of up to 250MBps, which is roughly ten times the rate available in current USB 2.0 devices. The So SuperSpeed drives consist of USB 3.0 HDDs which range in capacity of 500GB to 2TB and come in 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch formats, along with 80GB and 160GB SSDs that have been re-branded as Intel M-25 drives.

Microsoft Store opening Thursday with Ashley Tisdale
Looks like our tipsters were spot-on. The Scottsdale Arizona Microsoft Store is indeed opening on October 22nd as we heard, the first of many we expect to grace local strip malls across the country. "Be entertained," "Be excited, and "Be early" (doors open at 10AM), exclaim the ads in the Arizona Republic newspaper, to collect gift bags and concert tickets being given away to the first 1,000 visitors. And wow, Ashley Tisdale we guess Tony Danza was busy that day.

More Information on Forthcoming Final Cut Studio 3.0
Following the first rumors we published related to the future suite of Final Cut Studio, we have received additional information. AS we already reported it, the suite is being entirely re-written and its interface will be deeply modified. First, all applications forming the suite will not be indepedent as currently, be integrated inside a single super-application. The main interface will be using the concept of rooms, where each room represents a step in the post-production workflow associated to each application - similar to the Logic Interface. Several additional changes have been made on hte interface, especially for the Viewer and the Timeline. One will be able to export project in DVD, 2K, 4K and of course Blu-ray. The entire suite will be written in 64-bits, a must have to improve performance. FCS 3.0 will require at least 4 GB of RAM in addition

Intel Unveils a Cheap SSD
Intel should launch entry-level SSD models, offering lower price as well as lower performance levels. They will belong to the X25-X series. It will only offer limited storage space, 40 GB, and 170 MB/s in reading mode, and only 32 MB/S in writing mode. The latest value is really low but should partially be compensated by its very high number of operation per seconds, leading to overall performance levels higher than 2.53 plater-based HD.The price remains unknown but should be around 100 €. It will offer higher GUI and application reactivity as well as booting time and an overall improvement when compared to standard 2.5" HD. Of course the storage space will be more than limited, but its power consumption will be around 90 mW and even 60 mW idle.

Plastic Logic teases QUE proReader with 8.5 x 11-inch touchscreen
Details are scarce, since the official launch won't happen until January 7 at CES next year, but Plastic Logic is looking to crash into the "pro" segment of the e-reader market (currently mostly occupied by the Kindle DX) with its upcoming QUE proReader. Storm 2 hitting Verizon with 'MiFi capability?'
We can't confirm this Verizon Infomanager screen at this point, but if true, when the BlackBerry Storm 2 launches on the network, one of the big touted features will be its MiFi capabilities for sharing 3G internet over WiFi. It'd be smart branding move, sure, but MiFi is also the name Novatel uses for its hardware, so either we're talking here about an application of some sort or it's just internal communications short-hand. Also mentioned here is an October 21st launch, although it's been noted by Crackberry that the date's apparently been replaced with TBA. Without a doubt, we can confidently say we'll know for sure in the next, oh, 52 hours or so.

All Vertex SSD Models Are Identical
Unlike claimed in a recent article from XBits Labs, Mac Edition Vertex SSD is not faster than the standard model, al Vertex models are identical, beside the label sticked on as confirmed y OCZ. XBits Labs might have been biased during the test with a SSD already containing some information, or the TRIM or Garbage collection function could not have been used. Similarly, testing a SSD tagged "new" with another one tagged "used".
