Barnes & Noble readying own touchscreen e-reader?
Barnes & Noble is developing its own high-end e-book reader to help boost its online store, a source close to its plans purportedly revealed this afternoon. Most features are unknown, but it would have a touchscreen and use an iPhone-like on-screen keyboard for searches and similar tasks. A wireless link is also seen by the Wall Street Journal as a key ingredient, though whether this would involve 3G or simply Wi-Fi isn't immediately evident.

Mint Studio hands-on and impressions
Digital Signature's new Mint Studio iPod dock may not look all that different than the company's previous Mint 130 model on the outside, but it's gotten a few fairly significant upgrades to its internals, which was enough to get us interested in it again. Netbook growth poisoning notebook revenues?
The rise of netbooks is having a corrosive effect on the financial health of the rest of the notebook business, a DisplaySearch study asserted on Thursday. EA confirms Rock Band iPhone, publishes details
After having earlier teased the title, EA Mobile is now sharing more details on the gameplay in Rock Band iPhone. The game's multiplayer mode allows sending out invitations through Facebook Connect, and as in the console series, players can assume responsibility for vocals, drums, bass or lead guitar. Well, this isn't a huge surprise, since we've seen the rough outline of a nondescript, details-scarce reader from Barnes & Noble tucked away in FCCland, but the Wall Street Journal has "people briefed on the matter" who are saying the reader will be out possibly as early as next month. Yamaha outs three new iPod docking audio systems
Yamaha has recently introduced three new audio products in its home market of Japan, all of which can charge and playback the content of docked iPods and iPhones. The MCR-140 mini system has a USB port, and a CD player, as well as an AirWired Cradle that plugs into iPhones or iPods and wirelessly connects it to the system. The range is 33 feet, and the dock and connected Apple device can be charged simultaneously by plugging them into the top of the system. The stereo puts out 30W of total power and plays both MP3 and WMA files from CDs and USB drives.

Australian power grid attacked by virus, Linux saves the day
This isn't the first time we've heard of an institutional virus outbreak -- even the crew of the International Space Station had a neat little scare not too long ago -- and now various outlets in Australia are reporting that Integral Energy, which supplies energy to homes and businesses in New South Wales and Queensland, has suffered a particularly nasty visit by the W32.Virut.CF virus. MP3-Info 2.0 adds Snow Leopard support, improvements
Norbert Doerner has released MP3-Info 2.0, a major upgrade to his plug-in for Finder and iTunes that organizes music collections. The new version turns the software into a stand alone application within Snow Leopard, and includes integration with Twitter, which allows users to display what song they are currently listening to. USBfever launches iPhone Super Charger, Swivel Stand
USBfever has released two new products for the iPhone 3G and 3GS, the Super Charger battery extender and the 360-degree Swivel Stand. The Super Charger is a lithium-powered rechargeable battery, capable of extending a phone's talk or online time up to 8.5 hours, and audio playback up to 40 hours. Politicians push FCC to investigate Google Voice
Multiple Democrats and Republicans yesterday sent a letter to FCC chairman Julius Genachowski asking for a formal investigation into the legality of restrictions on Google Voice. The request follows a similarly worded AT&T letter and claims that Google is unfairly refusing to connect calls made over its service to some rural addresses and should be scrutinized to determine the actual nature of its service and potentially force a change in behavior.

Light Peak on track for a 2010 delivery?
CNET reports that the Intel Lightpeek demonstration that was shown on a hefty Hackintosh last month isn't as far off as originally anticipated. Speaking to Taiwanese optical networking company, Foci Fiber Optic Communication, they found that Light Peak cables and other fiber-optic components are right around the corner.
"We plan to have our pilot run ready by the end of November 2009, and ready to be in mass production in the beginning of year 2010," said Janpu Hou, the company's vice president of business development.

NVIDIA axes nForce chipsets during Intel dispute
NVIDIA late Wednesday said it would "postpone" any future nForce mainboard chipsets until an end is reached in the countering lawsuits between itself and Intel. As Intel alleges that NVIDIA's license doesn't cover chipsets for processors with an integrated memory controller, such as all Core i5/i7 and some newer Atom processors, NVIDIA claims that it has no choice but to freeze development of future nForce chipsets until Intel's "unfair business tactics" are either halted or cleared in court.

GSM Palm Pre to launch on Telcel in Mexico, feature storage expansion?

Soeben freigegeben, steht mit Version 3.1.2 des iPhone OS nun eine fehlerbereinigende Firmware-Aktualisierung für alle iPhone-Modelle bereit. Das Update behebt Probleme beim Video-Streaming und kümmert sich um die vereinzelt beschriebenen Komplett-Aussetzer des iPhones unter Firmware 3.1. Das Update ist 306MB groß und kann wie immer direkt über iTunes geladen werden. Auch für den iPod touch steht eine entsprechende Aktualisierung bereit. Samsung brings LED-lit XL2370 display to US
As part of a pair of US updates, Samsung at mid-day brought its XL2370 computer display to the US. The 23-inch, 1080p LCD uses Samsung's newest-generation LED backlighting to push the dynamic contrast ratio up to 5,000,000:1, or better than virtually all Samsung's TVs. Software firm finds Windows 7 doesn't boot faster than Vista
There's no question that Windows 7 promises plenty of improvements over Vista, with one of the biggest being faster boot times. While that's certainly been the experience for some, Iolo Technologies (a maker of PC tune-up software) found some significantly different results in their long term tests, which they say show that Windows 7 isn't faster than Vista at all in real world use. Specifically, they found that while Windows 7 actually got to the desktop fairly quickly, it took a full minute and 34 seconds to actually become usable, compared to a minute and 6 seconds with Vista. NVIDIA halting chipset development after all
It's been about two months since NVIDIA called rumors that it was leaving the chipset business "groundless," so perhaps it's no big shock that PC Magazine is now reporting that the company is putting its nForce chipset line "on hiatus." On hiatus, that is, until the company gets a few sticky legal questions out of the way, including whether or not its four-year deal with Intel covers the Nehalem and Core series of processors. Cheetah3D 5.0 adds node-based material system
The independently-developed Cheetah3D modeling and animation suite has been updated to v5.0, bringing a series of major changes. Among these is a new node-based material system, which allows for drag-and-drop creation of material effects using various procedural textures and shaders. MacRumors caught TomTom's car kit showing up again in Apple's European online stores today. This time, it no longer includes the $99 App but is still priced around 99 Euros/Pounds. The car kit works with the iPhone 3GS or 3G and enhances your iPhone's GPS performance with an additional GPS chip, speaker and antenna. If you ask us, $100 for a glorified car mount + another $100 for the app seems a bit steep, considering you can pick up a full, standalone TomTom for $50.

No more NVIDIA chipsets for Macs?
NVIDIA has fallen on hard times it seems both due to licensing issues with Intel and manufacturing issues with their integrated chipsets. ZDNet is reporting today that Intel has forced NVIDIA to halt development of its future chipsets for Intel processors, specifically Core and Nehalem series - which Apple use. We reported on this back in August.
In a somewhat related note, NVidia has stopped making chipsets for AMD because in-house ATI has been taking all of that business.

Altered window sizes not sticking
When you change the size and position of a freshly opened window, the new settings should be retained whenever you next open that window, even after restarting the system. This is because the settings for each window are stored in the hidden .DS_Store file within the opened directory for that window. IK releases GrooveMaker Techno, Trance for iPhone
IK Multimedia has posted two new iPhone applications, GrooveMaker Techno and Trance. The programs are genre-oriented twists on the basic GrooveMaker app, which is used to produce original electronic music. Each one supports over eight stereo loop tracks, which can be adjusted in real-time in terms of pan, volume, grouping and tempo. Completed tracks can be listened to on a handheld, or exported as WAV files via Wi-Fi.

Light Peak supplier says mass production to start early 2010

Apple will have to find a new name for the replacement of the Mighty Mouse
The company Man & Machine has just gained a victory at the United States Patent and Trademark Office that will cause some problems at Apple. They are henceforth legitimate owners of the name Mighty Mouse concerning the mouse of the computer. In short, unless they pay them, Apple will not be able to sell the mouse under this name any more. All that remains to do is to find a new catchy name. We are curious to know if this sentence will hasten the release of the new mouse.

Mossberg: Win 7 means Mac no longer "much better"

Ermittler zerschlagen internationalen Phisher-Ring
Fahnder in den USA und Ägypten haben am Mittwoch im Rahmen einer internationalen Razzia mit dem Codenamen "Operation Phish Phry" einen Phisher-Ring gesprengt. Das FBI setzte 33 Verdächtige fest, die äyptischen Behörden nahmen 47 Personen in Gewahrsam, die sich mittels gestohlener Benutzerdaten Zugang zu Bankkonten verschafft haben sollen. Insgesamt wurde nach zweijährigen Ermittlungen gegen nahezu 100 Personen Anklage erhoben. Laut FBI-Direktor Robert Mueller handelt es sich um einen der größten Cybercrime-Fälle in der Geschichte der USA.

Vor rund zwei Wochen konnte man das TomTom Car Kit auch schon im Apple Store bestellen, das Angebot wurde allerdings schnell wieder zurück gezogen. Laut der Produktbeschreibung damals sollte im Lieferumfang neben der Autohalterung auch ein TomTom iPhone-App enthalten sein - dies war laut TomTom eine fehlerhafte Information seitens Apple.
Jetzt ist das Kit mit aktualisierter Produktbeschreibung zurück (Danke Lukas). Zum Preis von 99,95 Euro erhält man tatsächlich nur die Autohalterung, die Software muss zusätzlich gekauft werden.
Schlecht ausgestattet ist der TomTom-Halter allerdings nicht: Das Car Kit kommt mit integriertem SiRF star 3 GPS-Empfänger, dieser erhöht die Empfangsleistung des iPhones und soll selbst in dicht bebauten Gebieten für gute Funktionalität sorgen. Adobe has this afternoon posted a video detailing some of the new features it is developing for Photoshop.
Hosted by the company’s Photoshop genius, Russell Brown, the video is available online now - the only catch is, it’s only presently accessible through Facebook. (Adobe should do the world a favour and shove it up on YouTube, we think).
The video shows a selection of features as demonstrated at Photoshop World. These include a new warp tool, Painter-style brushes - which aim to emulate the features found in Corel’s flagship Painter product, and much more.

Der Branchenverband Bitkom und das Bundeskriminalamt (BKA) warnen vor zunehmender Internetkriminalität. RIM goes pale, shows white Curve 8520 for T-Mobile and Bold for AT&T
We know it's after Labor Day, but that doesn't seem to be stopping RIM from rolling out a couple BlackBerrys in bright white this season -- and who are we to accuse Waterloo of a fashion faux-pas? First up, the Curve 8520 on T-Mobile is now available, complementing the black and "frost" versions that have already landed; perhaps more interesting, though, is direct confirmation from RIM that there'll be a white version Bold hitting AT&T in mid-October. Deutsche Telekom startet Pilotprojekt mit De-Mail
Gemeinsam mit der Deutschen Telekom und United Internet startet das Bundesinnenministerium morgen in Friedrichshafen am Bodensee einen Pilotversuch von De-Mail (PDF). Mit ihm sollen die Akzeptanz des Dienstes unter Bürgern sowie die abgesicherte Übertragung getestet werden. Grundlage ist ein im Februar verabschiedeter Gesetzentwurf (PDF) zu sogenannten Bürgerportalen. Sie sollen ab 2010 einen vertrauenswürdigen Geschäftsverkehr im Internet ermöglichen.

iPhone widens lead in JD Power study
The iPhone today claimed an even larger edge in satisfaction versus its rivals in JD Power's second phone satisfaction study of 2009. Apple's smartphone climbed ten points from an earlier score to 811 out of 1,000 while its closest rival, LG, managed just a four-point increase to 776. The two were the only smartphone designers to score above the industry average.

Japanese company to sell Swine Flu-resistant suit -- because nobody wants their clothes to get sick
Japan's been particularly hard hit with this H1N1 influenza marching around the globe, so maybe it shouldn't be surprising that one of its companies has come up with an "anti-flu" suit but it still is. Japanese clothier Haruyama Trading Company has developed and is now selling a men's suit which will supposedly ward off the H1N1 virus -- not the first time we've seen this idea. The suit, which looks exactly like any other, is coated in titanium dioxide (a popular ingredient found in sunscreen and toothpaste) which reacts when exposed to sunlight and kills the virus. iTunes Connect disruption causing echo effects?
Developer Cramzy claims that although its Celebrity Birthday Match app was approved for the App Store on October 4th, it never appeared in the list of recently-released apps. The program was more importantly submitted on September 24th, which is said to be around the same time a number of developers were reporting difficulty with iTunes Connect. Due to Connect being used for everything from app delivery to software management, developers experienced severe problems when submitting new apps or updates.

EA to release Rock Band for iPhone
EA Mobile will today announce a version of its extremely popular Rock Band game for the iPhone and iPod touch.

Google Chrome for Mac ships by Christmas?
Google Chrome for Mac should be ready in a “couple of months”, former Apple board member and current Google CEO, Eric Schmidt has said.
Schmidt appeared this week with Google co-founder Sergey Brin to discuss the state of the technology and search markets, and projects including Chrome and Android.
"I see a lot of Macs in this room, and a lot of very sophisticated people are using Macs now,” affirmed Schmidt. “We need to get a version of Chrome out for that, which we’ll have in a couple of months. The key to browser strength is speed.”
Google had intended Chrome for Mac to appear in the first half of 2010, but it may at least ship before Christmas.

Google opens Street View to Canada’s iPhones
Google Street View is now available to iPhone users in Canada, using the Maps application.
The service should now be available in Greater Toronto, Montréal, Metro Vancouver, Ottawa, Calgary and other major Canadian cities. The data should be available in both the iPhone browser and the Maps application, starting from today.
The company has also made a few tweaks in the overal usability of Street View, including inclusion of a “report a problem” link, through which users can report mistakes and inaccuracies, for example when a building has been knocked down or a name has changed. The company hopes to resolve each such edit within a month.

Novatel preps USB modem for N. American HSPA+
Novatel chose CTIA to launch its fastest Ovation USB modem so far. The MC998D (not yet shown) supports the current HSPA+ spec for 3G and will connect at up to 21Mbps downstream (5.76Mbps upstream) on supporting networks. It's also explicitly designed for North America's 850MHz and 1,900MHz HSPA frequiencies and will support the HSPA+ networks of Bell, Rogers and Telus in Canada as well as 7.2Mbps HSPA on AT&T in the US. The 2,100MHz band also gives it some support in Europe.

Man & Machine wins Mighty Mouse trademark
Years after having taken both Apple and CBS to court, Man & Machine has announced that it has at last been awarded registration of the "Mighty Mouse" trademark. The small accessory maker previously filed a 14-page complaint, claiming it had developed a desktop waterproof mouse under the same name over a year prior to the debut of Apple's product. The company also accused Apple of intentionally buying up search keywords for the phrase "Mighty Mouse," which further diverted people from finding their Mighty Mouse model or its website.

NVIDIA Stops Developing Intel-dedicated Chipsets
Intel won this battle (for the moment) and NVIDIA has to stop developing chipset for the forthcoming platform. The GeForce 9400M will not have successor (dedicated to Nehalem) till things change. This is of course not a technical problem, but as Intel refused to license to NVIDIA the required technology for the Nehalem, only Intel chipset will be available for OEM and/or users.
It implies that we will see the Intel graphical chipset successor of the GMA 950 back in our MacBook. Even though Intel massively improved it, it will most likely not reach the performance level of the NVIDIA GF9400M so Apple will be forced to had a dedicated GPU in future MacBooks. Rock Band coming to iPhone, iPod touch
A new iteration of Harmonix's Rock Band series is coming to the iPhone and iPod touch, EA Mobile has confirmed. The title is mentioned in a looping video presentation at this week's CTIA expo, which offers virtually no gameplay details. Google opens Street View to Canada’s iPhones
Google Street View is now available to iPhone users in Canada, using the Maps application.
The service should now be available in Greater Toronto, Montréal, Metro Vancouver, Ottawa, Calgary and other major Canadian cities. The data should be available in both the iPhone browser and the Maps application, starting from today.
The company has also made a few tweaks in the overal usability of Street View, including inclusion of a “report a problem” link, through which users can report mistakes and inaccuracies, for example when a building has been knocked down or a name has changed. The company hopes to resolve each such edit within a month.

Since we last saw iTwin back in September, not much has changed -- two physically synced USB dongles create a AES-256 encrypted connection between two Windows machines for transferring files from anywhere in the world (provided both are connected to the internet, of course). We had a chance to see a controlled demonstration up close at CEATEC, and while it worked as well as expected it to, we're not quite sure the $99 price tag is low enough to pique our interests. Light Peak to be in mass production by early 2010?
Intel's fiber optic Light Peak interconnect standard could be ready sooner than commonly expected, based on plans from one of the company's key suppliers. Foci Fiber Optic Communication said to CNET on Thursday that it will start mass producing both the internal cables as well as Light Peak-based, USB-like cables at the start of 2010. Google Chrome for Mac ships by Christmas?
Google Chrome for Mac should be ready in a “couple of months”, former Apple board member and current Google CEO, Eric Schmidt has said.
Schmidt appeared this week with Google co-founder Sergey Brin to discuss the state of the technology and search markets, and projects including Chrome and Android.
"I see a lot of Macs in this room, and a lot of very sophisticated people are using Macs now,” affirmed Schmidt. “We need to get a version of Chrome out for that, which we’ll have in a couple of months. The key to browser strength is speed.”
Google had intended Chrome for Mac to appear in the first half of 2010, but it may at least ship before Christmas.

Murata Seiko, the newly improved unicycling robot that we peeked a few weeks ago, was proudly on stage with her bicycling sibling at CEATEC, and we couldn't resist the urge to swing by and see exactly how amazing her balancing skills were. Sure enough, the bot never once teetering or tottered, and while it didn't scoot around for very long, we were still impressed to see it hold itself up with no human intervention. 'Course, we won't really be wowed until she successfully navigates down a few slops on the way to San Francisco's Pier 39, but based on what we saw in Japan, we'd say that she's well on her way. Mighty mouse is trademarked by someone other than Apple. What will new pointing device be called?
TechCrunch reports that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has, as of yesterday granted the trademark "Mighty Mouse" to a computer peripheral company not called Apple, Inc. OS X 10.6: Bug in Papierkorb-Funktion “zurücklegen”
Die Redaktion von MacBug.de hat einen kleinen aber einschneidenden Fehler in der neuen Funktion des Papierkorb unter Mac OS X 10.6 gefunden:
Hat man eine Datei in den Papierkorb gelegt und selektiert diese im Papierkorb, um von der Funktion “zurücklegen” Gebrauch zu machen, welche die Datei an ihren Ursprungsort zurücklegt, so ist dies nicht widerruflich.
Obwohl das System im Menüpunkt “Bearbeiten” zwar unter CMD-Z einen Shortcut vorschlägt, um das Zurücklegen zu widerrufen, kommt es hier immer zu einem Fehler - ein ärgerliches Problem, falls man nicht mehr weiß wohin das System die Datei zurücklegt oder aus Versehen eine falsche Datei verschoben wurde.

Bericht: AT&T vermarktet Android-Smartphone von Dell in den USA
Wie das Wall Street Journal (WSJ) berichtet, wollen Dell und AT&T im nächsten Jahr ein Android-Smartphone auf den Markt bringen. Damit wäre AT&T der vierte große US-Mobilfunkanbieter, der Android unterstützt. BlackBerry Bold 2 to be announced October 21 for T-Mobile, AT&T
We have it on good authority that T-Mobile and AT&T both currently plan on announcing the Bold 2 -- also known as the Onyx -- on October 21. As a refresher, this would be the touchpad-driven piece with model number 9700 that's been making the rounds on the leak circuit the past few months, a fitting successor to a device that virtually every celebrity this side of Merle Haggard has been photographed carrying at once point or another. According to Gartner, Androïd will overtake the iPhone OS by 2012

Dell to shutter US plant, cut 900 jobs, generally mess up someone's holiday
A report just crossing the wires says that Dell is slated to close one of its US manufacturing plants and cut about 900 jobs -- though that's a pittance compared to the approximately 76,500 workers Dell employs. The company's Winston-Salem, North Carolina desktop production facility will shut down come January 2010, though Dell says around 600 employees will hit the road in November -- just in time for the Holidays. The company says the closure is "part of an ongoing initiative to enhance the long-term value it delivers to customers by simplifying operations and improving efficiency," or as we'd put it, "it looks good on the books." Mossberg: "Mac OSX is no longer much better than Windows"
Walt, who is usually a huge Mac fan, says Windows 7 is a worthy competitor to Apple's OS X Snow Leopard:
In recent years, I, like many other reviewers, have argued that Apple’s Mac OS X operating system is much better than Windows. That’s no longer true. I still give the Mac OS a slight edge because it has a much easier and cheaper upgrade path; more built-in software programs; and far less vulnerability to viruses and other malicious software, which are overwhelmingly built to run on Windows.

Nokia's product testing labs in 3 minutes, 42 seconds (video)
We had a chance to take a tour of Nokia's research and development facility in San Diego this week -- and while we're afraid to say we didn't see any Maemo 6-powered devices or Symbian^4 emulators lying around, we did see some pretty cool stuff, particularly in the product testing laboratories where engineering samples and final products are put through pure hell. The idea is to simulate years' worth of real-life product use in just a few days -- individual tests last anywhere from a few hours to three weeks or longer -- by pressing buttons, sliding sliders, actuating hinges, heating, cooling, wetting, drying, dropping, whacking, shaking, rubbing, bending, and generally defacing the phones in every way imaginable. Mighty mouse is patented by someone other than
TechCrunch reports that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has, as of yesterday granted the trademark "Mighty Mouse" to a computer peripheral company not called Apple, Inc. That means Apple will probably drop the moniker of the mouse, which had both its fans and detractors or end up paying Man & Machine a hefty price.
For over 5 years, [Man & Machine] says that it has used the name for its line of mice that are “rugged, hygienic, waterproof.”
News that a new mouse (and keyboard) were on the horizon came last week when the FCC leaked, for split second, pictures of the devices. Apple will likely choose a new name for its pointing device. But

VAIO CW hands-on
The poor VAIO CW has to play third fiddle to the VAIO X and VAIO L tonight, but it's a pretty nice general-market laptop in its own right. Especially for the price we'd say that Sony used some pretty premium materials here. The trackpad is large and comfily textured, though it didn't seem to be multitouch, unfortunately. We found the keyboard to be nice, if just a bit shallow to the touch, and sometimes the general complement of regularness is a comfort in this crazy, mixed-up world. Gallery: VAIO CW hands-on

Samsung Behold II caught behind glass
Whoa, Android overload! Moment isn't the only Google-rife device out of Samsung that's on display at the show -- to get the whole picture you've got to turn your attention over to the Behold II, which is more or less a Galaxy done up in T-Mobile-specific clothes and makeup, right down to the all-important AMOLED display. Unfortunately, Sammy's been stingy with access to this one so far -- and it's apparently a non-working model, which might explain it -- but at least we can get a pretty good sense of the size of the device here. Mighty Mouse trademark awarded to Man & Machine, Mister Trouble can stop hanging around now
Trademark registration number 3691042, you just made someone very happy. This week, the US Patent and Trademark Offices awarded Man & Machine with the rights to the name "Mighty Mouse" when it comes to computer mice / "cursor control devices." So of the two peripherals shown above, it seems the beaut on the right is the one with legal claim to the moniker. Good thing, too, since its claims on "Cool Mouse" and "Really Cool [Mouse]" died just before Christmas last year. We gotta say, it looks as good of a time as any to replace the old point-and-click, eh Apple?

Apple, AT&T, the FCC, Google and Skype remark on AT&T opening VoIP over 3G
AT&T said late Tuesday that it has informed Apple and the FCC that "it has taken the steps necessary" to enable Voice over Internet Protocol — or VOIP — services on the iPhone over its 3G wireless network. AT&T said it made the decision "after evaluating our customers' expectations and use of the device compared to dozens of others we offer." The company already allows subscribers to make Internet calls using its 3G network over other wireless devices.

Amazon Kindle drops price to $259, joins the iPhone on AT&T's International network
Amazon announced today that they were going to have an International version of the Kindle for sale for the holiday season. Until now the Kindle has used Sprint's EVDO network to get purchases and updates from the Internet. Unfortunately for current Kindle owners, Sprint's radio technology doesn't work overseas.
Enter AT&T and its global standard HSDPA network. Amazon has worked out a similar deal with AT&T as it did with Sprint, except on the AT&T version, you can roam in 100 countries with your Kindle. You can even buy the new Kindle internationally for use with US books.

EA launches EA Comics, plans comic books for iTunes...
We know Apple enjoys a better relationship with games industry chiefs than it ever has before, on strength of its iPhone and iPod touch. Now it looks like a key gaming partner is laying the ground to make a little comic book push when Apple launches its first tablet device early next year.
Electronic Arts has announced a new brand, EA Comics. This company will license comic book brands and franchises for publication both in print and through iTunes.
EA, in collaboration with iDW Publishing, will pick and choose titles from among big names which include Transformers, Star Trek, Doctor Who and more.

Apple tablet: Foxconn to build 300,000+ each month, ships Q1 2010
Another day, another Apple tablet rumour, and this one suggests manufacturing deals have already been done, and the product will be focused as an eBook reader.
Digitimes this morning is reporting that Foxconn (aka, Hon Hai Precision) has won the manufacturing contract, rather than Apple’s long-term Mac maker, Quanta.
This figures as Foxconn is also Apple’s iPod/iPhone product manufacturer, and suggests at least that this tablet will be a larger sibling in that side of the Apple family.
(Recall, there have been some claims of two tablets on Apple’s road map, one running OS X, the other running a variant of the OS X Mobile found on iPhones and the iPhone touch).

Android to beat iPhone by 2012, Gartner analysts claim
Analysts at Gartner predict Android will account for 14 percent of the global smartphone market by 2012, beating the iPhone into third place (13.7%) behind Symbian with 39 percent of the market.
These predictions mean departure of Google boss Eric Schmidt from Apple’s board was mandatory. Sure, he may have reclused his seat during iPhone discussions, but his company has pushed out a mobile OS that analysts believe will beat Apple’s iPhone.
Computerworld reports the analysis that Android will fully exploit Google’s network-based (“Cloud”) services, and that Google will continually - and rapidly - improve its mobile OS.

Sony claims lightest-ever notebook
Sony's unveilings tonight were highlighted by the VAIO X. The 11-inch netbook crossover is billed as the lightest ever notebook and uses a carbon fiber shell to reach a weight of just 1.6 pounds. VAIO X spotted in champagne, propped up by extended battery, ripped apart
While the price might be the most notable -- and welcome -- aspect of Sony's VAIO X showing tonight, we were also privy to our first look of the laptop in champagne, the incredibly odd extended battery, which actually creates a bit of a gap between itself and the rear of the laptop, and even Sony's own little teardown of the components. We'd be a bit more grumpy about that big "14 hour" wedge, given that the regular battery only gets about 3 hours of quoted battery life, but since Sony is selling the laptop with both of them in the box, we can't complain too much. Create custom keyboard layouts with Ukelele
Apple provides a number of layouts for various purposes in OS X--mainly for international layout differences, but also for variations such as Dvorak. Besides localization purposes, there are also times when specialized layouts may be useful for certain technical applications, to just disable a key, or to swap two modifier keys' functions on a standard keyboard layout. Regardless of the reason, people have wanted to easily edit or create new keyboard layouts in OS X, but have not been able to do so with any utilities Apple provides.

Sony's laptop event is underway, but we've got early pages detailing the new VAIO CW. Let's just say it's much more reasonable than the VAIO X, packing up to a 2.8GHz Core 2 Duo with NVIDIA GeForce GT230M or GT210M graphics under a 14-inch screen for $799. Samsung Omnia II for Verizon in the flesh, Windows Mobile 6.1 on board
We finally got a good, hard look at the Verizon-customized version of Samsung's Omnia II, and we've got good news and bad news: the good news is that the phone's a darker, more reasonable shade in person than it was in that press shot we'd seen before, but the bad news is that we've confirmed it's running 6.1. Anyone daring to release a 6.1 phone at this point is at serious risk of getting laughed out of the room unless they offer an upgrade path mere minutes afterwards, so we're hoping that by the time this is on shelves, it'll either be running 6.5 out of the box or there'll be an update program announced in conjunction with the release. Sony VAIO X announced, starts at $1,299; VAIO CW and VAIO L also updated
Sony's just started a laptop-oriented event in NYC, but we just got our hands on what look like unpublished web pages for the VAIO X and updated VAIO CW and L-series machines. All of 'em now run Windows 7, of course, but the big news is apparent confirmation that the VAIO X will indeed have a 2GHz Atom -- although it's listed at a "2GHz Intel Processor," the 533MHz bus speed also listed pretty much gives it away. And no, you're not getting an Ion in this deal to make up for that starting $1,300 price tag -- it's Intel GMA500 graphics all the way.

CasaTunes has released a new iPhone and iPod touch application, capable of remotely controlling a music system using the company's server software.
