Windows Mobile 7 aiming for Spring 2010 RTM?
Purported release dates for the first crop of WIndows Mobile 7 phones have varied in a surprisingly tight range over the past year, slipping from late '09 to the latest we've heard, late 2010, and the latest info we've got here dovetails nicely with that. What you're looking at up above is allegedly a slide out of an Office 2010 deck presented to Microsoft partners, where an updated Office Mobile suite is mentioned in passing alongside a WinMo 7 RTM date of Spring 2010. As Mary Jo Foley points out in a comment on the original post, that would put phones on shelves several months later at the earliest, which leads us back to the fact that this actually

Apple criticized over iTunes LP development costs
Critics are lambasting Apple over its new iTunes LP format, charging that the company has priced indies out of the game by charging a production fee of $10,000 to develop the interactive titles. Content authors are likely to view the fees as absurdly low, however.

Tweetie 2 hits the App Store, go get it
We've been playing with Tweetie 2 for the iPhone for a bit and have to say really makes Twittering easy. Somehow atebits has added a lot of features without taking away the simplicity of the original app.

T-Mobile's Project Black a rapid 3G expansion plan? [U]
(Updated with talk of $50 unlimited plan) T-Mobile's mysterious Project Black may be a combination of the company's phones and a rapid expansion of its fastest 3G service, a quick follow-up source said Friday. Rather than center on a specific device or a plan, Black would on pushing T-Mobile's upcoming high-end phones, including the Behold II, Bold 2 and Cliq, and matching them with the quick deployment of its 21Mbps HSPA+ network throughout the US. MOTOBLUR ported to the G1, unreleased CLIQ looks on in envy
It's unclear exactly how MOTOBLUR software might've leaked into the wild, but it's already been repurposed in the best sort of way into a G1-friendly ROM. Despite its beta status it's looking relatively snappy, but there are still some missing elements like WiFi and Bluetooth. If anything it's a testament to how portable and hackable Android is turning out to be so far, and we look forward to the ongoing improvements to Android by diverse manufacturers being disseminated far and wide -- though if Motorola had its way, it'd probably at least happen after the relevant device has hit the market. The demand for flash memory exceeds the offer
Digitimes reports that the market of NAND flash memory is dry. The cause is mainly due to Apple. In order to reduce risk, all the large manufacturers of memory preferred to sign contracts for a defined production rather than to take the risk of letting the market decide the fate of their products.If one adds that Samsung has launched its own lines of products containing flash and thus want to supply its own needs first, one finds oneself in a situation where many potential users have difficulty finding a supply to manufacture their products.The situation should improve in 2010, since the production will have ramped up and with new products such as memory storing 3 bits per cell.

Sirius XM debuts companion iPhone app for XM SkyDock
Although its companion hardware has yet to be released, Sirius XM has released a dedicated XM SkyDock app for the iPhone and iPod touch. Users are able to tune into various XM satellite radio stations, including artist-specific stations for the likes of Elvis Presley and the Metropolitan Opera. While listening, stock and sports tickers provide visual feedback.

FCC will investigate Google Voice over rural calls
The FCC today told Google that it will investigate the company's policies regarding its Google Voice calling service (registration required). Acting on requests by AT&T and politicians, the agency hopes to determine whether or not the company is violating must-connect rules by refusing to complete Google Voice calls made to certain numbers, particularly those in some rural areas as well as to 900 numbers and other lines that have expensive access rates.

Adobe launches free Photoshop.com Mobile for iPhone
Adobe has launched Photoshop.com Mobile for iPhone, bringing a simplified version of its flagship software to the iPhone and iPod touch. The new app can crop, flip and rotate photos, or adjust exposure, saturation and tint, with option of converting to black-and-white. Two filters are included: Sketch renders a photo as a drawing, while Soft Focus simulates its namesake lens effect. Exposure and filter adjustments are generally made with swipe commands.

Kingston outs MobileLiteG2 card reader
Kingston on Friday announced the release of its MobileLiteG2 flash card reader. The second generation of the ultra-portable USB 2.0 device supports SDHC, microSDHC, Memory Stick PRO Duo, Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo and Memory Stick Micro (M2) memory cards. Apple said to be charging $10,000 for iTunes LP production, cutting out indie labels
Sure, it may be tough deciding whether to shell out the extra few bucks for a deluxe iTunes LP or not (okay, maybe not that tough), but it looks like that's nothing compared to what record labels are faced with. While Apple itself of course isn't saying anything official on the matter, Gizmodo spoke with the owner of one indie record label who got a bit of information after inquiring about the possibility of making some iTunes LPs himself. Apparently, not only is Apple not currently making iTunes LPs available to indie labels at all, but it's charging the major labels a hefty $10,000 production fee for each one, which no doubt also means the

iPhone subsidies unnecessarily hurting AT&T?
North American phone carriers are far too dependent on subsidies, argues the Yankee Group. The research firm uses the particular example of the iPhone, which is said to turn only a small profit for AT&T. The carrier is able to lock customers into two-year contracts, but only after knocking several hundred dollars off the price of each phone. After also taking into account the impact of high data usage, the company is only breaking even on iPhones roughly 17 months into each contract. Clearwire must use WiMAX until 2011
National 4G provider Clearwire is bound to keep using WiMAX for its network until at least 2011, an SEC filing discovered this week has found. The carrier is now known to have struck a deal with Intel that requires it use WiMAX for at least the next two years in exchange for marketing help from the chipmaker. Clearwire also has to share revenue whenever the subscriber's device is Intel-based as well as pay a limited number of activation fees.

iPhone takes 'dream phone' award, WiFi model heads to China
Apple’s iPhone has won the accolade of ‘Dream Phone” in the Mobile Choice Consumer Awards in the UK, while on another matter China Unicom today confirmed itself to be in talks with a view to offering WiFi-enabled iPhone models in China.
Mobile Choice says of the iPhone 3GS, “No phone in the history of mobiles has demanded more headlines and column inches than the iPhone.” Perhaps that’s why readers voted for Apple’s product, while the mag’s editorial staff named LG its ‘Manufacturer of the Year’.

NSF awards Harvard $10 million for robot bees (video)
When we heard that the National Science Foundation awarded $10 million to Harvard to make a swarm of robot bees, our first thought was: "We could do it for half the price." Then we remembered that the university has been down this path before, including its robot fly program (whatever happened to that thing?) and might be the better choice after all. Panasonic Lumix GF1 reviewed
The typical Micro Four Thirds review seems to come down to a matter of tradeoffs -- size and convenience for a bit of a drop from the image quality and performance of a real DSLR. The GF1 doesn't break that trend, but it has some pretty nice things to offer for the inquisitive interchangeable lens shopper. The most notable feature when put up against its direct competition, the E-P1, is the GF1's built-in pop-up flash, and the primary drawback of both of these cams versus their regular Micro Four Thirds counterparts is the lack of an eye-level viewfinder, though the GF1 does offer a pricey hot-shoe mounted approximation. Telus HSPA to launch Nov. 3, HTC Hero coming too?
Telus' imminent HSPA 3G network has received what should be a more definitive launch date as well as its initial phone lineup. Multiple reports from insiders in HowardForums have staffers training to be ready on or before November 3rd for the new network. The preparation window would have the HSPA deploy at its earliest opportunity and may give a specific timeframe for the announced November iPhone launch on the Canadian network.

Amazon confirms international Kindle DX is on the way too
Amazon made a fairly big splash in announcing that the standard-issue Kindle would finally be available in an international edition, but it's now also rather quietly confirmed that the larger Kindle DX will be soon become a bit of a globetrotter as well. Unfortunately, it's also considerably more light on details this time around, although Amazon spokesman Drew Herdener does say that the international Kindle DX will come out "sometime next year," and we can only presume that it'll demand a similar premium to its smaller counterpart (which is $20 more expensive than the US-only version).

MobileMe service updates
MobileMe has released a service update affecting iDisk, Find My iPhone, and contacts. The bulk of the changes affect the iDisk section of MobileMe, including interface updates to the Public folder page that make it look like the rest of me.com and enables drag and drop for moving files between folders (when activated for visitors). The update also allows users to access another member's MobileMe Public folder from the me.com interface.

BlackBerry Bold 2 set for November 11 T-Mobile launch?
The word on the street is that the BlackBerry Bold 2 (aka 9700, aka Onyx) will be heading to T-Mobile -- and, subsequently, into the hands and hearts of the eager American public -- on November 11. This would seem to jibe with talk of AT&T and T-Mobile coming out parties slated for October 21, although we'll have to wait for an official announcement. On the other hand, we have seen enough of this device over the months that it would be a shock if its debut was anything less than imminent.

Mac version of Chrome due before 2010
The Mac version of Chrome should be released before Christmas this year, suggests Google CEO Eric Schmidt. The executive made the revelation at a New York press conference, in the middle of answering a question about the browser's overall marketshare. EU will Versteigerung der digitalen Dividende ummodeln
EU-Telekommunikationskommissarin Viviane Reding greift in die Auktion zur größten Frequenzvergabe seit zehn Jahren im deutschen Mobilfunk ein. Seemingly called just iPhone +QWERTY -- this KIRF is being marketed as just that -- a real business phone with a hybrid identity blending the BlackBerry and the iPhone. And really, that's not too bad of a description for this little dude, we guess. Google Chrome unterstützt nun auch WebGL
Googles Chrome unterstützt künftig auch WebGL. Nach Unternehmensangaben wurde der Standard für 3D-Darstellungen im Browser in die aktuelle Entwicklerversion von Chrome integriert. Zuvor hatten bereits Firefox und Webkit ihre Unterstützung angekündigt.

Nikon holding press events Oct. 14
Nikon in the past day has all but confirmed plans to launch the D3s, or a similar high-profile camera, through multiple reports of press events. Formal gatherings in Denmark, the Netherlands and Sweden are all slated to take place on October 14th and provide information on an unnamed product presumed to be the pro camera. The news suggests Nikon will formally unveil that day or the day before and give the media hands-on time later on.

INQ working on Spotify-branded phone, possibly running Android?
While the Spotify music service continues to tease us US-bound folks from afar, there's word of a Spotify handset now to make us even more jealous. The phone is apparently being built for Swedish provider Telia (Spotify already accounts for 35 percent of digital music sales in Sweden), and according to TechCrunch, INQ is building the phone. Interestingly, the last thing we heard from INQ about future plans was a forthcoming Android handset, and we also have a source that says that Spotify probably wouldn't be placed onto a regular BREW-powered INQ handset, so the optimist in us would like to believe that this Spotify phone could be INQ's big Android pla

Amazon liefert E-Book-Reader Kindle nach Deutschland
Amazon hat eine Woche vor dem Start der Frankfurter Buchmesse mit der Ankündigung, den hauseigenen E-Book-Reader Kindle nun auch international auszuliefern für Überraschung gesorgt.
Allerdings wird es - zumindest vorerst - keine lokalisierte Version des Geräts geben, statt dessen schickt Amazon einfach den US-Kindle nach Deutschland. Mit wenigen Ausnahmen (darunter die FAZ) erstreckt sich somit auch das Buch- und Zeitschriftenangebot vorerst auf englischsprachige Titel. Unabhängig von den bei Amazon angebotenen Büchern im Kindle-Format lassen sich auch eigene Dokumente (Word, TXT, PDF, JPG, MP3, Audible und mehr) per USB auf das Gerät übertragen - das verbreitete Epub-Format leider jedoch nicht ohne Konvertierung.
Wir dürfen gespannt sein, wie gut das Amazon-Angebot in Deutschland angenommen wird. Der E-Book-Markt steckt hierzulande

Nokia's Maemo 6 to support multi-touch
Nokia on Friday revealed early details of Maemo 6, its next-generation smartphone platform. The OS will be the first to natively support multi-touch and capacitive touchscreens and should finally put the Linux-based OS on par with modern platforms like iPhone or webOS. Until now, the software has depended on single-touch resistive (pressure-dependent) screens incapable of gestures or other more precise movements.

Samsung launches Armani touchscreen smartphone
Samsung on Friday revealed that its flagship Windows Mobile 6.5 smartphone will be part of its Armani-themed fashion line. The device has a bronze-trimmed theme meant to appeal both to executives and other more style conscious users, but it's also one of the company's more functionally advanced devices. It centers on a 3.5-inch AMOLED display more vibrant than LCDs and has a sliding QWERTY design that, like the HTC Touch Pro2 or Nokia N97, tilts the screen at an angle for a more natural viewpoint when typing.

Microsoft's "Pink" phones in danger of collapse?
Microsoft's Pink phone project may be on the verge of falling apart even before its first product ships, according to a controversial set of leaks supposedly confirmed today. Backing a scoop from earlier in the week, a source for AppleInsider says Microsoft has poorly managed the project and squandered the acquisition of Sidekick creator Danger from 2008. Mechanical piano hacked to talk, says nothing you'd be interested in
It's not exactly the Baroque Vocoder we were hoping for, but an Austrian composer has hacked a mechanical piano to recite text -- and recite text it does (even if you need subtitles and some prompting from the voice-over to understand what it's saying). DataQuest macht Letec in Chur künftig Konkurrenz
Seit Jahren gibt es in Graubünden nur einen grossen Mac-Händler, die Letec in Chur. Neben der Letec gab es in den letzten Jahren jedoch ein Ausbau der Mac-Bezugsquellen in der Bündner Hauptstadt: Post, Manor, MediaMarkt und Co. und für kurze Zeit sogar einen zweiten, einheimischen Mac-Händler, welchen es jedoch nur für kurze Zeit gab. Bereits seit Stunden stottert Apples Synchronisationsdienst MobileMe vor sich hin. Greenpeace, US Secretary of Energy back Apple
Both Greenpeace and the US Secretary of Energy are welcoming an Apple decision to abandon the US Chamber of Commerce. The former's toxics campaigner, Casey Harrell, on Thursday issued a statement which applauded Apple for confronting the Chamber over its opposition to mandatory limits on greenhouse gases. Apple is the first technology company to have removed itself from the Chamber over the issue, though it was preceded by shoe maker Nike, and several energy companies including Exelon, PNM Resources and Pacific Gas & Electric.

Apple’s iPhone has won the accolade of ‘Dream Phone” in the Mobile Choice Consumer Awards in the UK, while on another matter China Unicom today confirmed itself to be in talks with a view to offering WiFi-enabled iPhone models in China.

NVIDIA Ion 2 still on track for late 2009?
NVIDIA's Ion 2 chipset is still due to ship before the end of year and could provide a significant boost not just to netbooks but to notebooks using Intel's CULV (Consumer Ultra Low Voltage) processors as well, an update from the company has shown. In addition to supporting the timeframe, an executive heading chipset development has reportedly confirmed rumors that the next-generation Ion will support processors other than the Atom, including the Celeron, Core 2 and Pentium processors that make up CULV as well as VIA's competing Nano design.

Studie: Großteil der auf Firmen-PCs installierten Software bleibt ungenutzt
Das Marktforschungsunternehmen Forrester Research hat eine Studie zur Ausstattung von Arbeitsplatzrechnern mit Software und deren Nutzung vorgestellt. Befragt wurden dazu gut 2000 sogenannte Information Worker von amerikanischen Firmen mit mehr als 100 Mitarbeitern. Von ihnen nutzt gut ein Drittel Notebooks, zwei Drittel arbeiten an Desktop-Rechnern. Jeder Zehnte bekommt von seinem Arbeitgeber ein Smartphone gestellt, aber jeder Dritte verwendet sein privates Handy auch beruflich.

Plastic Logic color e-reader on track for spring?
Barnes & Noble spokesman Daniel Joresson at CTIA appears to have confirmed a timeframe in a video (available below) for what's likely the first color e-book reader available in the US. The Plastic Logic device would be smaller than the 8.5x11-inch large model proposed early on and would have just a paperback-sized display. However, it would have its own direct access to Barnes & Noble's bookstore and would be ready by spring 2010, or considerably earlier than an Amazon Kindle with color or most other rivals.

NASA LCROSS moon impact in T-minus 15, water discovery expected in T-minus 19
NASA's LCROSS (Lunar CRater Observing and Sensing Satellite) mission is coming to a glorious end. The mission launched on June 18, 2009 is just minutes away from making dual-impact on the face of the moon. The first impact sees the Centaur craft hitting the surface at a speed of about 1 mile per second. That should eject about 350 tons of debris from a crater about 20-30-meters in diameter and 2- to 4-meters deep. A second Shepherding spacecraft will pass through the debris plume 4 minutes later, collecting and relying data back to Earth in real-time before meeting its end. Warning, warning: The latest Snow Leopard bug seems to threaten all your data, and it seems back-up has become essential, while Apple explores if the bug is just an isolated outbreak or a more serious matter.
There’s been a series of complaints across the last month of incidents in which users start their Macs up as normal only to find they’ve logged in as ‘Guests’ on their machine - with all the files and data held on their Mac in their own user account seemingly deleted.

gCubik shows off its good side, and every other while it's at it (video)
Remember gCubik? It's been a few months, but to recap, it's a cube developed by researchers from NICT that features textured surfaces that present you a different view on the "internal" image based on viewing angle, giving the illusion something is physically in the box. Theoretically, at least -- it's pretty low-resolution and in the early stages of development. We stumbled upon the device at the CEATEC showfloor this week and decided to snap some video while there. There were moments when the effect was lost, and getting too close completely blurred what we saw to the point of incomprehension, but again, this shows a whole heap of potential that's fascinating to us. Hey developers, Nokia's got a special treat for you today. It just announced the official port of the community-driven Qt for Maemo project. That means a common framework for writing native applications (and web apps and services thanks to Webkit integration) across Maemo 5 and future Maemo 6 releases, Symbian, and Windows Mobile. That's a broad reach in terms of devices (including the hotly anticipated N900) and marketshare and a smart move by Nokia in an era where devices are differentiated not by hardware and OS but by their ability to run apps and connect to web services. A "technology preview" release is available now and scheduled for final release (based on Qt 4.6) in Q1 of 2010.

• Resolves sporadic issue that may cause iPhone to not wake from sleep
• Resolves intermittent issue that may interrupt cellular network services until restart

Light Peak on track for a 2010 delivery?
CNET reports that the Intel Lightpeek demonstration that was shown on a hefty Hackintosh last month isn't as far off as originally anticipated. Speaking to Taiwanese optical networking company, Foci Fiber Optic Communication, they found that Light Peak cables and other fiber-optic components are right around the corner.
"We plan to have our pilot run ready by the end of November 2009, and ready to be in mass production in the beginning of year 2010," said Janpu Hou, the company's vice president of business development.

Successful Launch of the Radeon HD 5870
Despite the economical crisis, AMD is experiencing a huge success with its new Radeon HD 5xx0. According to different sources, 100,000 Radeon HD 5870 would have already been ordered, and the company is currently unable to provide enough units to satisfy the requests. Graphic cards manufacturers are complaining as the current situation will not improve before several weeks. In addition ATI/AMD as well as NVIDIA have reduced the production of all 55-nm engraved GPU, and so OEM can not get enough 5870 and it becomes difficult to get GPU for HD 4890. Some distributors seem to have some stocks and they are selling RAdeon HD 5870 units way over the recommended price.
AMD can really capture a large market share as NVIDIA does not seem to be able to offer a real competitive product immediately available, so AMD will be alone on the market till the end of the year. Now that Mac OS 10.6.2 provides a real performance gain for Radeon, we are quite excited to be able to test Open CL with a Radeon HD 5870.

Wie MobileMe dient Dropbox der Bereitstellung und Synchronisierung der eigenen Daten in unterschiedlichen Formaten und von jedem Rechner oder jetzt eben auch iPhone aus. Kostenlos stellt der Dropbox-Account 2 Gigabyte Web-Speicherplatz bereit, 50 GB kosten 9,99 US-Dollar (pro Monat), 100 GB 19,99 Dollar. Formate wie .rtf, .txt oder .pdf können direkt aus der App heraus geöffnet und betrachtet werden. When we reported about the Intel technology known as Light Peak couple of weeks ago we were not expecting this revolutionary new feature to be rapidly implemented.

Dev finds Windows Marketplace DRM severely lacking, easily circumventable
Microsoft's Windows Phones just left the chute a few days ago, and already it seems that ye old DRM is getting talked about -- and not in a good way. According to one Chainfire over at XDA-Developers, the so-called "copy protection" involved in keeping applications in place rather than strewn across a neighborhood of handsets is a pitiful joke, requiring just five minutes of tinkering to save the CAB files that the Marketplace app downloads to a separate folder. Apple's having a stellar year with JD Power surveys. The iPhone took the crown in both the consumer and business categories again in their bi-annual survery (though the battery didn't fare well). From JDPower (via PED)
Apple ranks highest among manufacturers of smartphones used primarily for personal reasons, with a score of 811, and performs particularly well in ease of operation, operating system, features and physical design. LG (776) and RIM BlackBerry (759) follow Apple in the rankings.

Amazon Kindle DX to have world model in 2010
Amazon today confirmed that it should have an international version of the Kindle DX. Company spokesman Drew Herdener explained that the larger e-book reader would follow the strategy of the Kindle 2 international model and switch to HSPA so that it too could be used to download books outside of the US. Mac OS X remains better than Windows 7 but there is not much in it
Walter S. Mossberg, the respected technological journalist, of the Wall Street Journal whose opinions are often referenced is leaning towards Windows 7. He confirms that a historic page has been turned after the fiasco of Vista and that Seven is certainly the best operating system ever released by Microsoft. According to him, the superiority of Mac OS X over the Microsoft OS is longer reality. There remains with the Apple system some points in its favour; such as the price of its update, its facility, the presence of more integrated softwares, and the non-existance of viruses.
In addition to these points that remain important, Windows is no longer behind and proves to be even better on certain points. United Airlines launches in-flight Wi-Fi
United Airlines this week began deploying Wi-Fi on some of its flights. The rollout will at first cover longer flights between California and New York and should have 13 Boeing 757 planes in United's fleet offering Internet access by mid-November. Much as with similar approaches from Virgin and other airlines, the new approach is based on Aircell's Gogo technology and shares a 3G cellular connection (typically EVDO Revision A) with the entire cabin over a Wi-Fi hotspot in the plane itself.

AT&T CruiseCast service partner says it's 'business as usual' despite 'financial difficulties'
It only just officially launched in June of this year (after fairly long build-up), but it looks like AT&T's CruiseCast in-car satellite service may not exactly be in the best of shape.
