Trickle of companies switching from BlackBerry to iPhone?
A small but significant number of corporations are switching from BlackBerries to iPhones, a new report claims. Citing various industry sources, including a "top sales executive" from a major cellphone carrier, the report suggests that several factors are spurring a transition. Predominant is cost, since a company with a thousand workers may spend tens of thousands of dollars handling BlackBerry services, a consequence of hosting internal servers or relying on outsourcing.

Nokia, Samsung, Sony, others set mobile to HDTV interconnect standards
Looks like interconnection development is the new black, with earlier reports on Intel’s LightSpeed technology designed to connect everything to everything else now followed by the creation of a cross-industry group to create a unified interconnect to output multimedia content from a phone to a TV.
Apple’s already ahead on this, at least in some respects, as devices and docks already exist to take video and other media from an iPhone or iPod to a TV set, but any movements that aim to make life a little simpler should be welcomed.

18% of Mac users have upgraded to Snow Leopard
Netapplications is reporting that around 18% of Mac users have upgraded to Snow Leopard. Their methodology uses the data from thousands of websites and compiles them together - you can see from their data below (via theappleblog) that Snow leopard traffic spikes during the weekend when people aren't at work using their older Macs and their PCs.
That is all well and good, but we thought you'd like to know that 9to5mac Mac users are now over 65% (!!!) converted.

Mac mini shipments to resellers delayed 2 - 3 weeks
Apple has allegedly notified several resellers that shipments of Mac mini systems will be delayed by two to three weeks, according to Apple Insider. The extended shipping time-frame affects the entry-level 120GB model and the 320GB variant. Usually the company has computers on their way to vendors within one to three days from the time an order is placed.

ASUS EeeBox EB1501 comes packing Windows 7, Atom 330
We just caught a glimpse of ASUS' EeeBox EB1012 nettop last month, but it looks like the company is already doing things one better with its new, redesigned EB1501 model. As before, this one packs the increasingly common one-two punch of NVIDIA's Ion chipset and Intel's Atom 333 dual-core processor, but makes its mark by being the first EeeBox (and one of the first nettops) to come pre-loaded with Windows 7, which also means it's not shipping until the end of the month. Otherwise, you'll get the usual 2GB of RAM (expandable to 4GB) and 250GB hard drive, a built-in DVD burner, and an HDMI port to make it feel right at home in your home theater.

New Logos for Wi-Fi Products
The new (old) 802.11n wireless format being now officially finalized and certified, the Wi-Fi Alliance released new logos to help customers to be understand capacity of some wireless peripherals:
Let's start with the different 802.11x format: a, b, g and n defining which wireless protocols are supported by the device. Mark/Space intros Missing Sync for Android
Developer Mark/Space has announced The Missing Sync for Android, expanding the company's phone support. The new program allows users to sync with a phone based on Google's Android platform, such as the HTC Hero. Version 1.0 supports syncing contacts with Address Book and Entourage, as well as copying over music, photos, podcasts, ringtones and/or videos, primarily from an iTunes or iPhoto library.

Rogers Rocket Hub shares 7.2Mbps 3G
Rogers today counted itself as one of the first North American carriers to offer an officially-sanctioned 3G wired and wireless router on its network. Rebadged as the Rocket Hub, the Ericsson-designed router can take cellular data, up to 7.2Mbps 3G over HSPA, and share it both over Wi-Fi as well as for those on an Ethernet link. The Hub is deemed particularly important for users who can't get Internet access for multiple devices but expect to remain in one place.

Android-based ODROID handheld shows off its SNES emulation skills on video
We've seen a few odds and ends on the ODROID -- an Android-powered gaming device due this December -- but we've never gotten a look at the handheld in action. That all changes today, as we're privy to a new video of the spec-stacked (833MHz Samsung S5PC100 CPU, 512MB RAM) gamer taking an SNES emulator out for a spin. As you can probably guess, the device doesn't flinch at a screenful of Space Megaforce sprites, but that's not surprising given the horsepower. Researchers create Amazing X-Ray Wireless Network!
Don't freak out or anything, but those wireless signals you bask in everyday could be watching you. Or at least they might, someday, if the work from a group of researchers at the University of Utah makes it beyond the lab. As Technology Review's Physics arXiv blog reports, they've devised a means to modify a standard 802.15.4 wireless network (commonly used by home automation services like ZigBee) to actually "see" movement through walls, and with some degree of accuracy, no less. As you might expect, however, that's not quite as simple as a firmware upgrade, and currently requires a 34-node network to keep watch on a standard living room, which is apparently enough to pin down moving objects within a meter or so. Joby unveils Gorillamobile 3G/3GS tripod
Joby updated its defining tripod line this afternoon by launching the Gorillamobile 3G/3GS. The add-on preserves Joby's distinctive trick of using three bendable arms that lets the Gorillamobile cling to many surfaces, such as a bike's handlebars, but adds a removable case that both holds an iPhone 3G/3GS in place and detaches to serve as basic protection in a pocket. Uniting the two gives either Apple device a more stable platform for photos or videos without needing a flat surface for a regular tripod.

Sierra Wireless adds 2-in-1 HSPA+ AirCards to a lineup already fraught with action and danger
Sierra Wireless has just announced five new AirCard data cards and USB modems, including devices supporting HSPA+ frequencies. The AirCard 503, AirCard USB 308, and AirCard USB 309 all support peak download speeds of 21Mbps, with the former being a 2-in-1 PC card / ExpressCard device and the latter two being basically the same USB modem (except the first one supports 850MHz, 1900MHz, and 2100MHz frequencies, while AirCard USB 309 limits you to 900MHz and 2100MHz bands). Windows Mobile to reach 15% of smartphones in 2013?
In spite of common perception, Windows Mobile could take second place in the smartphone market in as little as four years, an iSuppli study predicted today. Analysts estimate that the phones shipped will triple from 27.7 million by the end of this year to 67.9 million in 2013, or enough to give it 15.3 percent of the industry behind Nokia's predicted 47.6 percent. Microsoft is expected to slip to third this year but to recover over time.

Android 1.6 update now official for T-Mobile G1 and myTouch 3G
Donuts for everyone! Well, not everyone -- but as we'd heard, at least some G1 and myTouch 3G owners on T-Mobile USA are now being blessed with an official Android 1.6 build over the air. The carrier says it has "begun delivery," which we take means it's not all happening at once; that's the way the 1.5 rollout was handled, so it really doesn't come as a surprise. Application Systems Heidelberg übernimmt ab sofort den Exklusivvertrieb von dem Bildbearbeitungsprogramm Pixelmator in Deutschland. Finder Error -10810 in Snow Leopard causing problems
A number of people are having a problem where the Finder will hang or crash, followed by a Finder error message saying "The application Finder.app can't be opened. -10810." The general agreement among affected users seems to be that this is spurred mainly when accessing external drives, but there could be a few other related reasons.

Helix Wind launching wind-powered cellphone tower trials in US and Africa
Helix Wind, a company that produces some very distinctive-looking wind turbines, is getting ready to start new trials in the US and Africa. These trials will involve testing the vertical wind turbines as a source of power for cellphone towers in areas where they may be off the grid, and carry much higher operating costs. The turbines should produce enough energy to power the cellphone towers, and pay for themselves within about six months. Looks like interconnection development is the new black, with earlier reports on Intel’s LightSpeed technology designed to connect everything to everything else now followed by the creation of a cross-industry group to create a unified interconnect to output multimedia content from a phone to a TV.

Oppenheimer, Merrill Lynch analysts raise AAPL targets
Two prominent analysts of Apple stock have raised their price targets, Barron's writes. Oppenheimer analyst Yair Reiner has increased his target from $185 to $210, also pushing EPS estimates up to $1.50 for the September quarter, and to $5.97 for FY09. Samsung High Density 32-nm Flash Memory Chips Too Slow for SSDs
SSD manufacturers had high expectations with the release of 32-nm engraved flash memory chips, as it would allow them to increase storage capacity while decreasing production costs and retail prices. Intel did it for some of its SSDs by using chips manufactured by its partner Micron (34-nm engraving). Other SSD manufacturers were depending on Samsung. Unfortunately, Samsung seems to be facing serious issues with its 32-nm engraved memory chips. There are indeed thinner and allow higher density, however, they are far too slow to be used in SSDs. As a consequences, all SDD manufacturers are now looking to other chips markers for getting the proper product with the expected performance level< If Samsung will most likely sell its first batches of slow 32-nm memory chips for other less-demanding usage, it could nevertheless slow down SSD availability and adoption on the customer market. Apple has stealthily bought an online map firm in what could represent an aid to the iPhone but a split with Google, a search has discovered. Cisco will Tandberg für drei Milliarden Dollar übernehmen

Zusammen mit iTunes 9 hat Apple im September Alben und Filme mit zusätzlichen Funktionen und Infos (Songtexte, Fotos, Videos usw.) vorgestellt: iTunes LP und iTunes Extras - wenn man so will, das Klappcover oder DVD-Menü für iTunes. Während im deutschen iTunes Store inzwischen auch ein paar iTunes LPs erhältlich sind, lassen Filme mit iTunes Extras noch auf sich warten.
Die Rahmenbedingungen für die Nutzung von beidem stehen derweil natürlich längst fest und lassen sich inzwischen auch in einem deutschen Support-Dokument nachlesen. Studie: Bing vervierfacht in Deutschland seine Nutzerzahlen
Microsofts Suchmaschine Bing hat ihren Marktanteil in Deutschland seit dem Start im Juni von 0,5 Prozent auf 2,12 Prozent vervierfacht. Noch Ende des Jahres soll die Erhebungstechnik fertig gestellt sein, so dass im 1. Halbjahr 2010 die "mobile facts" erstmals veröffentlicht werden können. Die Reichweitenmessung basiert auf einem sogenannten "Drei-Säulen-Modell" aus 1. Netto-Reichweiten (in Form der Unique Mobile User), 2. Kontaktwerten für Angebote und deren Belegungseinheiten sowie 3. Struktur- und Marktdaten. Dazu will die AGOF Gateway-Daten über anonymisierte Nutzungsvorgänge im mobilen Netz mit einer "pixelbasierten technischen Messung" erheben. Video: Ben Heck's 17-inch PS3 Slim laptop makes hearts race
Is it us or has Ben Heck outdone himself with the minimal clean design of his latest gaming mod? This laptop sees Sony's PS3 Slim stuffed into a monochromatic chassis with 17-inch Gateway 1775w LCD throwing a 1280 x 720 pixel resolution. There's even space inside to tuck away the power cord when traveling. The pinstriped result is nothing short of elegant, sporty even, especially when compared to his PS3 laptop from 2008. Time Telescope greatly improves optical data transmission, won't undo your past mistakes
Researchers at Cornell have developed a "time telescope" from silicon waveguides that work like the two lenses of a telescope (or microscope) to compress and decompress data. Using the method, they were able to shift a 24-bit light pulse from 2.5 nanoseconds to 92 picoseconds in length without losing any information -- delivering the it to its destination 27 times faster than traditional fiber optics. Of course, the current 24-bit limit is too small for real world use, but it is a start -- and since this uses industry-supported fabrication technology, there's a chance that we may actually get our hands on one of these things in the not-too-distant future. NVIDIA launches Fermi next-gen GPGPU architecture, CUDA and OpenCL get even faster
NVIDIA had told us it would be accelerating its CUDA program to try and get an advantage over its competitors as OpenCL brings general-purpose GPU computing to the mainstream, and it looks like that effort's paying off -- the company just announced its new Fermi CUDA architecture, which will also serve as the foundation of its next-gen GeForce and Quadro products. The new features are all pretty technical -- the world's first true cache hierarchy in a GPU, anyone? -- but the big takeaway is that CUDA and OpenCl should run even faster on this new silicon, and that's never a bad thing. Isover bringt App für die Baubranche
Die Anwendung "Saint-Gobain Isover G+H AG" ist laut Isover, einem Anbieter nichtbrennbarer Dämmstoffe, "das ideale Werkzeug für Architekten, Ingenieure und (Hobby-)Handwerker". Konkret gestattet sie, die Dämmwerte eines Steildaches anhand typischer Bauweisen und Materialien zu überprüfen. So kann beispielsweise kontrolliert werden, ob die Anforderungen der Energieeinsparverordnung (EnEV 2009) erfüllt werden - einen rechtskräftigen EnEV-Nachweis liefert die App allerdings nicht. iTunes LP requirements pretty hefty, perhaps include tablet clues?
Apple's got a new support doc out today and it sheds some light on what's going on behind the scenes of iTunes LP. Firstly, to play an iTunes LP, you'll need a 2GHz Dore 2 Duo or faster processor, so earlier model Minis and MacBooks need not apply. PowerPC? Pshaw (No). On PCs, the same requirements apply.
Perhaps most interesting however, is the minimum screen requirements. Apple states that the screen resolution has to be at least 1280x800 on both Mac or PC. There are a lot of people out there running media centers on 720P screens that might not meet these requirements.

Android 1.6 getting pushed to G1s starting tonight, myTouch 3Gs in a day?
This is totally out of left field, but TmoNews (which tends to have a pretty solid track record when it comes to all things T-Mobile) is claiming that "select" G1s will be receiving Android 1.6 "Donut" starting well, right about now. So much for any lingering worries that the first retail Android device was being left high and dry, eh? Flash a Radeon HD 4870 with Mac OS X
A recent trick we described generated a lot of interest among Mac Pro owners (all generations included): flashing a PC Radeon HD 48x0 to work in a Mac. So, far the procedure (partially described here), required CD Freedos to access Atiflash tool.Thanks to Apple and the recent firmware update of some Radeon installed in iMac, we obtain a Mac version of Atiflash. The procedure is available already in English (we will not comment it further before having it fully tested): http://boeglin.org/blog/index.php?entry=entry090918-031702 In summary, it requires the firmware update of an iMac, Pacifist to extract archive, firmware dedicated to HD 4870/4890 and a couple of command lines to enter in the Terminal. Blackberry Desktop Manager Available tomorrow
The application Blackberry Desktop Manager should be released tomorrow according to the last information we obtained.
It will bring extended synchronization option between Mac OS X and RIM Blackberry devices, including address book contents, iCal or even iTunes contents. By releasing this hoe-made application, RIM intends to attack Apple on its field and compete with the iPhone and its ecosystem by bringing a software able to make Blackberry and Mac owners happy and able to get the best from both world. Both Aha Mobile and ALK Technologies have released new updates to their GPS-enabled apps for the iPhone. The Aha traffic and destination-finder app allows users to see the current traffic flow and travel time of roads, while delivering tools for locating nearby rest stops or coffee shops. XtraLean has announced its latest file searching and sharing tool that utilizes both Spotlight and Bonjour technology: DataLore. Time Telescope greatly improves optical data transmission, won't undo your past mistakes
Researchers at Cornell have developed a "time telescope" from silicon waveguides that work like the two lenses of a telescope (or microscope) to compress and decompress data. Using the method, they were able to shift a 24-bit light pulse from 2.5 nanoseconds to 92 picoseconds in length without losing any information -- delivering the it to its destination 27 times faster than traditional fiber optics. Of course, the current 24-bit limit is too small for real world use, but it is a start -- and since this uses industry-supported fabrication technology, there's a chance that we may actually get our hands on one of these things in the not-too-distant future. PSP firmware 6.10 brings Bluetooth internet tethering to the PSP Go
The PSP Go isn't even out yet and Sony's already dishing out the feature updates -- PSP firmware 6.10, announced today, allows the slider handheld to tether to your cellphone over Bluetooth for remote internet access. That's actually a pretty handy feature for a system that relies on network game distribution, don't you think? That's not all, however: all PSPs will get a new XMB feature called SensMe which can generate playlists based on "moods," and the PC-based MediaGo software is being updated as well. iTunes LP requirements pretty hefty, perhaps include tablet clues?
Apple's got a new support doc out today and it sheds some light on what's going on behind the scenes of iTunes LP. Firstly, to play an iTunes LP, you'll need a 2GHz Dore 2 Duo or faster processor, so earlier model Minis and MacBooks need not apply. PowerPC? Pshaw (No). On PCs, the same requirements apply.
Perhaps most interesting however, is the minimum screen requirements. Apple states that the screen resolution has to be at least 1280x800 on both Mac or PC. There are a lot of people out there running media centers on 720P screens that might not meet these requirements.

Borders pulls a B&N, offers free WiFi to all patrons
In the gory, never-ending war for book store supremacy, Borders has just tapped Verizon in order to match Barnes & Noble's summer efforts to bring gratis WiFi to all who enter. Details of the arrangement are scant, but the takeaway is this: in "virtually all" of its more than 500 stores nationwide, Borders is hooking up with Verizon to bring free internet to anyone who sashays in (note: you literally have to dance upon entering) with a WiFi-enabled device. Nikon D3s likely to launch October 15
Nikon should upgrade its full pro DSLR with the D3s in less than a month based on clues left by itself and outsiders. A French copy of the company's itinerary (PDF) for the Paris Expo on October 15th refers to the launch of a "nouveau reflex Expert produit Nikon," or a new pro DSLR product. The date coincides with reports of a D3s appearing at the same date and is unlikely to be a recap of the semi-pro D300s and amateur D3000.

ATI Bets on Open CL
ATI announced its collaboration with Pixelux Entertainment, a company specialized in material physics simulation based on the Finite Element Method, to bring such rendering available for Microsoft Direct X11 AND Open CL. This is most likely a move to compete with the now well established PhysX engine used by NVIDIA, but only available on Windows.
The fact that ATI aims to offer it on both platform is most likely a sign of its involvement and probably a way for the company to demonstrate its interest in Mac hardware, software and OS. It could be the only or ATI to see its GPU back in MacBook Pro and Mac Pro. The goal is also to create a multi-platform standard to be used in games (making porting even easier).
