Macs enter crosshairs of Russian hacking group
Macs are being deliberately targeted by a Russian hacking group, says Sophos security researcher Dmitry Samosseiko. The group is a subset of a larger criminal network known as the Partnerka, which normally turns a profit through spam promoting fake online drug vendors, and malware in the form of "scareware" anti-virus protection. The Partnerka have generally concentrated malware efforts on Windows users, who together represent the largest possible target.

iPod classic 2.0.3 firmware adds support for Genius Mixes
Apple has released a firmware update, v2.0.3, for the latest 160GB iPod classic. The update adds support for Genius Mixes, the iTunes feature that automatically creates playlists. Tracks are analyzed and combined into several genre-based mixes that can be listened to via iTunes or directly from the iPod.

Philips SA075 PMP joins the HD-capable crowd
There's an unfortunate lack of details on this one at the moment (official or otherwise), but it looks like Philips has a new PMP in the works that seems set to join the growing ranks of HD-capable players out there. Like those other recently-announced players, this new SA075 model includes a suitably high res touchscreen (800 x 480) on the device itself and, perhaps more importantly, an HDMI out port for true HD video playback on your TV (although it's not clear if that means 720p or full 1080p). iLuv finally ships i1166 iPod/DivX/DVD hybrid
Several months after it was announced, iLuv's i1166 portable player has started shipping today. The 9-inch device covers most forms of digital media and uses a notebook-style shell to accommodate both DVDs and all video-capable iPods; both movie discs and the Apple devices are put inside while users rely on an external display with a custom interface to navigate and watch videos. An SD card slot and a USB port also give it an option to play raw DiVx videos.

Apple unveils new EDU licensing program, puts iWork and iLife on millions more desktops
Today, Apple released a new licensing scheme for K-12 and higher education. The new plan is aimed at reducing paperwork and headaches for school administrators while at the same time saving institutions money and making software audits easier.
Interestingly, they've also bundled iLife and iWork into the basic OS package which will likely put the software on many more educational machines. Millions more. Until now iWork has been a separate purchase and often left off of lab computers and kiosks in favor of Microsoft Office.
Whether or not this is to just simplify purchasing or a response to Google Apps gaining a foothold in education isn't certain.

News: EU proposes volume limit on iPods, iPhones
A new proposal from the European Commission would see lower default volume limits placed on portable music players and smartphones such as the iPod and iPhone. The proposal is based on a study by the EU’s Scientific Committee published in October 2008, which found that listening that headphones at volumes of more than 89 decibels with regularity could have detrimental effects on hearing. Analyst pushes AAPL target to $210
Thomas Weisel analyst Doug Reid has raised his price target for Apple stock, shifting it from $180 to $210. The analyst cites "store checks" as an influence, indicating continued product demand; also important to the target are factors like greater expected IT sales, and China Unicom's iPhone deal. The latter is said to support estimates that Apple could sell 24.9 million phones during FY2010.

TomTom car kit for iPhone will run $120
We've been waiting quite a while to hear pricing info for the much-anticipated TomTom car kit for the iPhone. The kit, which will be sold separately from the navigational iPhone app, will be available in October (that's almost now!!). SuperDrive errors under investigation, developer says
Apple is currently probing recent problems with Mac SuperDrives, according to a developer in contact with the company's support and developer staff. Several drive models have been experiencing trouble mounting discs, in some cases blocking people from upgrading to the newly-launched Mac OS X Snow Leopard. The word of Apple investigating drive failures comes by way of a representative in the company's Developer Relations team.

Phase One 645DF brings dual shutters, fast flash
Phase One today upgraded its core medium-format camera body in launching the 645DF. The upgrade to the original 645 incorporates both a traditional leaf shutter as well as a focal plane shutter, the combination of which helps give it unusually flexible flash sync and exposure options. The camera has one of the fastest flash syncs available and can trigger the light at up to a 1/1,600 second shutter speed, and exposure times can be as little as 1/4,000 of a second or as much as a full hour.

EU consumer watchdog threatens iPhone sales as explosive investigation continues
European regulators continue to examine claims of exploding iPhones in Europe, warning today that the product could be withdrawn from sale should investigators find proof the devices can be dangerous.
EU Commissioner for Consumer Protection Meglena Kuneva issued a warning today that iPhones will be pulled from store shelves if it turns out recent screen explosions are hardware-based problems.
The investigation is now in the hands of independent lab experts, who are working to discover if there’s a problem with the iPhone.
"I don't need (Apple)'s permission to stop goods entering the market," Meglena Kuneva told reporters

Robonica Roboni-i rolling robot takes aim at WowWee, holiday shoppers
Upstart toymaker Robonica has been making promises about its Robini-i programmable robot for a little while now, but it looks like it's now not only managed to get the bot out the door, but land it on the cover of the new Hammacher Schlemmer holiday catalog as well. Headed up by a former Hasbro exec, the company is clearly taking aim at the likes of WowWee, but hopes to one-up them by also letting its robot with a "serious attitude" become an avatar in an MMO of sorts when it's not tormenting your pets. EU will Norm für maximale Lautstärke
Die EU will eine neue Norm zur Begrenzung von Gesundheitsrisiken durch Lärm von MP3-Playern erlassen. Anlass ist die Furcht vor Langzeithörschäden, insbesondere bei Jugendlichen, die häufig und Laut Musik mit iPods und anderen Playern konsumieren.
Die Hersteller sollen demnach künftig per Voreinstellung eine verträgliche Obergrenze definieren, dem Anwender bleibt es jedoch nach entsprechenden Warnhinweisen freigestellt, diese Obergrenze zu ignorieren - Aufklärung statt Bevormundung. Mit der Umsetzung ist übrigens in nächster Zeit zu nicht rechnen, ein solches EU-Normverfahren dauert gut und gerne auch mal bis zu zwei Jahre.

VideoLAN updated to 64-Bit support, but you might want to hold off...
The good news? VideoLAN, the multi-purpose, cross platform, open source video encoder/decoder was updated this week to a 64-bit version 1.02 (yes we're aware of Perian). NVIDIA shows Ion accelerating 720p Flash video
NVIDIA at a recent presentation showed its Ion chipset accelerating HD video on a netbook. While the hardware can already process HD already on the system, the new demo shows YouTube's HD video smoothly with Ion's full decoding enabled where the same footage stutters when it has to rely mostly on the Atom processor. The technique works by adapting Ion to recognize and process the H.264 encoded video inside the Flash environment.

GPU-accelerated 720p Flash video gets demoed on a netbook (smoothly)
It's been a long wait since NVIDIA and Adobe announced their plans for GPU-accelerated Flash video back in January of this year, but it looks like the pair now finally have something to show for themselves. Der chinesische iPhone-Exklusivanbieter China Unicom hat heute die Preise für das Apple-Smartphone bekannt gegeben, für die es ab Oktober über den Ladentisch gehen wird. QNAP enters media hubs with 1080p, iTunes hooks
Better known for its network storage, QNAP today rolled out the NMP-1000, its first attempt at a networked TV media player. The device on its basic level acts as a conduit for Internet and locally shared network content with the ability to access Flickr and YouTube from a TV as well as see iTunes shares and DLNA-aware devices on the local network. A 3.5-inch SATA bay lets it share its own media and play 1080p movies in most common formats, including popular ones like DivX, H.264 and XviD.

Orange signs UK iPhone deal with Apple as O2 loses exclusivity
Ending O2’s exclusive status as sole UK iPhone supplier, France Telecom’s Orange this morning said it will begin selling the iPhone in the UK from later this year.
"Orange UK and Apple have reached an agreement to bring iPhone 3G and 3GS to Orange UK customers later this year," Orange said.
"Orange, which has the largest 3G network covering more people in the UK than any other operator, will sell iPhone in all Orange direct channels including Orange shops, the Orange webshop and Orange telesales channels, as well as selected high street partners," the carrier said.
O2 will continue selling the device, but its exclusive contract will expire. The company has attracted over one million iPhone users to its network since the device went on sale.

Apple, iPhone, iPod dominate 2009 CoolBrands list
Apple has taken three of the top five places in this year’s CoolBrands list, with the iPhone at top of the poll, Apple itself in third place and the iPod securing fourth place in the list, led for the last three years by Aston Martin, which fell to second place this year.
The success of the iPhone this year, which sold 5 million units between March and June, has led to it rising from second to become the most stylish brand. The shortlist for the survey is compiled by 2,500 voters. The final twenty brands are voted on by a panel.
BlackBerry saw some gains, climbing 16 places to seventh place, while the BBC’s iPlayer was the only new entry to take a top 20 slot. G

October iPhone for China, high price dismays, S. Korea deal 'soon'
China Unicom will begin selling the iPhone in China from next month - but the steep price tag it’s charging has set expectations of massive sales in the country back.
Meanwhile, South Korea’s KT Corp. continues in talks with Apple for release of the device in that country, but hasn’t set a ship date or price at this time, Reuters informs.
Back in China, China Unicom’s stock fell 5 per cent to a near three-week low after the carrier said it will begin selling iPhone in China next month. The stock decline was attributed to the high cost the carrier expects to charge, 5,000 Yuan, approximately $732.50, far higher than analysts had hoped for.

CNN exposes yet more widely-reported Mac security FUD
Yet more Mac security FUD has been reported as fact, with a security researcher touting that a group of Russian hackers have been offering 43-cents per Mac as a reward to hackers subverting security on the platform.
It’s a FUD report, of course, as it fails to note that the general rate for Windows hacking is 50-55-cents, and fails to note that the website offering the bonus has since shut down, due to lack of interest.

App store tops 2 billion downloads, 85,000 apps
The numbers keep piling up for the App Store. Today, Apple announced that the iPhone App Store downloads surpassed two billion and the number of apps available for download surpassed 85,000. The App store hit a billion downloads in late April and turned a year old in July with 1.5 billion tallied.

Prevent the Terminal host name from changing
When you launch the terminal, the default shell "Bash" will present the last login time, followed by the command prompt. This is formatted to show the computer's name, followed by the current directory and then a dollar sign. Depending on the system and network configuration, the computer's name may change.

Apple revises educational licensing agreements
Apple has made major alterations to its educational licensing program, ones which could potentially raise the cost of Macs for schools. The company is said to be abandoning a previous volume licensing scheme, which allowed institutions to buy Mac OS X at costs of $39 to $59 per copy, depending the amount of licenses ordered. Instead, schools must now pay for annual license renewals.

South Korea forces cellphone rate cuts
The South Korean government's Communications Commission today ordered (subscription required) that carriers cut their subscription rates. The act follows up election promises by President Lee Myung-bak and will have all three major carriers in the country slash their voice, data and bundle prices by varying degrees. SK Telecom, which has just over half of the Korean market, will cut its voice rates by 27 percent to about $35 and its data plans by about 19 percent. MMS lawsuits expand with Minnesota filing
A lawsuit filed in a US District Court in Minneapolis has once again accused Apple and AT&T of failing to warn about MMS limitations, according to the Pioneer Press. Plaintiff Kyle Irving charges that both companies have breached contract, avoiding a duty to inform the public that MMS services would not be available in the summer. EU schreibt MP3-Herstellern Drosselung der Lautstärke vor
Die Europäische Kommission hat neue Standardeinstellungen bei MP3-Playern und Mobiltelefonen mit Musikabspielfunktion zur Pflicht gemacht. Außerdem wurden die Regelungen über Warnhinweise zu den Folgen übermäßiger Lärmexposition verschärft. Verbraucher sollen die neuen Standardeinstellung künftig zwar ändern können, sie erhalten dann aber klare Warnhinweise zu Risiken. Derzeit muss solch ein Hinweis lediglich in der Bedienungsanleitung enthalten sein.

In a short PR, Apple announced that two billions applications for iPhone/iPod Touch have been downloaded from the dedicated AppStore. There are now more than 85,000 applications and 125,000 developers registered to the Apple’s iPhone Developer Program.

Carrier China Unicom has put an end to some earlier rumors, and formally announced details for the launch of the Chinese iPhone. Reuters reports that an unspecified model should cost 5,000 yuan, approximately $732, when sales begin on October 1st. Poor Zipit. As a $149.99 instant messenger client nobody got particularly excited about you. The European Commission on Monday set volume limits for MP3 players in all European Union member states. Fehler in Lightroom 2.5 und Camera Raw 5.5
Adobe bestätigt im eigenen Blog, dass es zu Fehlern in Lightroom 2.5 und Camera Raw 5.5 kommen kann, die zu Artefakten an hellen Konturen führen können. Einschränkend muss man erwähnen, dass die Probleme nur bei Macs mit PowerPC-Architektur sowie bei einigen Kameraherstellern vorkommen.

Orange UK gets iPhone 3GS, O2 loses exclusivity
Orange UK this morning said it has struck a deal with Apple to carry both the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS "later this year." The carrier doesn't yet have information regarding phone prices or service plans but does say it will sell the handsets both online, at retail, and at "selected high street partners." CNN exposes yet more widely-reported Mac security FUD
Yet more Mac security FUD has been reported as fact, with a security researcher touting that a group of Russian hackers have been offering 43-cents per Mac as a reward to hackers subverting security on the platform.
It’s a FUD report, of course, as it fails to note that the general rate for Windows hacking is 50-55-cents, and fails to note that the website offering the bonus has since shut down, due to lack of interest.

October iPhone for China, high price dismays, S. Korea deal 'soon'
China Unicom will begin selling the iPhone in China from next month - but the steep price tag it’s charging has set expectations of massive sales in the country back.
Meanwhile, South Korea’s KT Corp. continues in talks with Apple for release of the device in that country, but hasn’t set a ship date or price at this time, Reuters informs.
Back in China, China Unicom’s stock fell 5 per cent to a near three-week low after the carrier said it will begin selling iPhone in China next month. The stock decline was attributed to the high cost the carrier expects to charge, 5,000 Yuan, approximately $732.50, far higher than analysts had hoped for.

Wie Adobe in einem Blog schreibt, gibt es in Camera Raw 5.5 und Lightroom 2.5 einen Fehler, der zu Artefakten an hellen Konturen führen kann. Allerdings tritt der Fehler nur auf Macs mit PowerPC-Prozessor auf, wenn das Highlight Recovery Tool verwendet wird. You know that UMD-to-PSP Go conversion program? Ain't gonna happen. The "good will" program that would have provided free (or at least heavily discounted) digital copies of games already purchased on UMD discs has been scrapped. A spokesman for SCEA said, "We were evaluating a UMD conversion program, but due to legal and technical reasons we will not be offering the program at this time." Adding insult to injury, the PSP Go Rewards program offering 3 free games to European UMD owners will not be offered in the US. That's the bad news. The not so bad news is that 16,000 pieces of digital content will be available for the US PSP Go launch on October 1st. Apple, iPhone, iPod dominate 2009 CoolBrands list
Apple has taken three of the top five places in this year’s CoolBrands list, with the iPhone at top of the poll, Apple itself in third place and the iPod securing fourth place in the list, led for the last three years by Aston Martin, which fell to second place this year.
The success of the iPhone this year, which sold 5 million units between March and June, has led to it rising from second to become the most stylish brand. The shortlist for the survey is compiled by 2,500 voters. The final twenty brands are voted on by a panel.

Nachdem wir zu Beginn des Jahres 2009 die wohl niedrigsten Preise aller Zeiten für Arbeitsspeicher gesehen hatten, setzt sich der kontinuierliche Anstig an der Speicherbörse von DRAMeXchange weiter fort. Orange signs UK iPhone deal with Apple as O2 loses exclusivity
Ending O2’s exclusive status as sole UK iPhone supplier, France Telecom’s Orange this morning said it will begin selling the iPhone in the UK from later this year.
"Orange UK and Apple have reached an agreement to bring iPhone 3G and 3GS to Orange UK customers later this year," Orange said.
"Orange, which has the largest 3G network covering more people in the UK than any other operator, will sell iPhone in all Orange direct channels including Orange shops, the Orange webshop and Orange telesales channels, as well as selected high street partners," the carrier said.
O2 will continue selling the device, but its exclusive contract will expire. The company has attracted over one million iPhone users to its network since the device went on sale.

Kabel Deutschland startet 2010 100-MBit/s-Angebot

Light Peak: One Port for All
During the IDF, Intel made an impressive demo of a new technology being currently developed: Light Peak.
Nothing new for the principle: use optical fiber support data transfer, something already used for year for high-speed and high-performance data transfer network. The same optical fiber network is already use in Japan, and being deployed in some EU countries (Germany, France, Spain, etc.) and should offer up to 100 MB/s both way.However, Intel aims to make optical transfer the future of all peripheral connections, from a simple external HD to the display. Well, it is in fact Apple that asked Intel to develop such technology to reach a defined goal: one port for all. In addition, one will be able to get any type of data, so a display will be able to get 8 Gbits/s, while the external HD will be fine with "only" assigned 1 Gbits/s.

China Unicom prices iPhone for October 1st launch
While the iPhone got an official announce for China last month, its retail pricing and delivery date have remained a mystery. That's going to change later today when China Unicom is expected to announce an October 1st launch for Cupertino's darling. Eight service packages ranging in price from 126 yuan (about $18) to 886 yuan (about $130) per month will be available to Unicom's 141 million subscribers from a pool of 700 million cellphone toting Chinese. How much will it cost? 5,000 yuan or a steep $733 green retail. Panasonic's 50-inch 3D plasma announced, seeks fine family home
True, Panasonic's 103-inch 3D television is more desirable, but Panny's new 50-incher will be more affordable when it comes time to buy your first 3D set. The 1080p TV requires viewers to wear special specs, naturally, in this case, Panasonic's active "shutter" glasses. As the name implies, the lenses switch in sync with the TV so that the right image is seen by the right eye and the left image is seen by the left eye. All that quick image swapping requires new PDP materials and chips to maintain screen brightness. Production Canon EOS 7D video samples hit the web
We've already seen some video from a pre-production Canon EOS 7D, but it looks like it's hitting stores now, and this is the first video we've seen from a final retail unit. It's genuinely impressive, especially since filmmaker Dan Chung says most of it was shot at 1600 to 6400 ISO, but it's important to realize that he was also using some seriously expensive lenses, a specialized video viewfinder, a wide-angle mattebox to reduce lens flare, and a separate external microphone for audio. Preview of Intel X25-M 160 GB Postville SSD
While announced earlier this summer, the new Intel X25-M based on 34-nm engraved memory chips is only available now due to a problem with the first firmware. We could get a 160 GB model.
Announced with a thickness of 9.5 mm, it is in fact even thinner (7.5 mm) and feature a plastic holder to get the standard size. Of course, we could not resist, and we disassembled it and compare it with the previous generation of Intel X25-M, a 80 GB model:
The new model is on the right side. As you can clearly see it, the old SSD used 20 chips of 4 GB each, while the new X25-M features 10 chips of 16 GB each. By adding 10 new chips, Intel could offer a X25-M with a storage capacity of 320 GB; it should be available by the end of the year, or Q1 2010.

Prototype of a Radeon HD 5870X2
While the Radeon HD 5870 has officially be unveiled last week, and if currently the fastest single GPU graphic card in its class, a prototype featuring 2 GPU already exists as illustrated by those photos published by xtremesystems.org.
Of course, few details are available about this "monster", but for sure it would dramatically boost Open CL-based tasks with Snow Leopard. However, so far it is only a dream or a phantasm, as Apple never supported so far dual GPU graphic cards. Intel hat zum IDF eine mögliche Adaption eines Mini-ITX-Mainboard gezeigt, dass auf den kommenden H57-Chipsatz setzt. Diese Platine ist für die kommenden Clarkdale-Prozessoren in 32-nm-Fertigung mit integriertem Grafikkern gedacht, auch „Braidwood“ ist anscheinend mit am Start.

iPhone: MMS Finally Available in USA
If in most countries where the iPhone is available, the version 3.0 of the iPhone OS brought support for MMS, our US readers had to wait till yesterday to finally get it working in their country too. The reason of such long delay was directly linked to the insufficient network infrastructure developed by AT&T, the carrier was not ready to support this option when Apple made it available in its OS. This hardware update most likely costs AT&T quite some money and as a consequence prices of MMS are rather expensive in USA: 20 cents per MMS, 20 USD for unlimited MMS, 15 USD for 1,500 message or 5 USD for 200 MMS. If one considers that mail are unlimited and included in a data plan, the success of MMS will most likely be limited in USA.

Rumors of Research in Motion's BlackBerry 9900 were revived on Sunday with an apparent slip of information. The HTC Leo has already got hearts-aflutter the world over with its high-end spec sheet and huge capacitive touchscreen, but now that some early benchmarks have hit we might have a full-on fanboy panic on our hands.
