Exclusive: Apple dictated Light Peak creation to Intel, could begin migration from other standards as early as 2010

Remember how Intel showed off its new, advanced optical standard -- Light Peak -- this past week on a Hackintosh? Well it turns out there's more to that story than you probably know, and it all leads back to some revealing facts about the connection literally and figuratively. Engadget has learned -- thanks to an extremely reliable source -- that not only is Apple complicit in the development of Light Peak, but the company actually brought the concept to Intel and asked them to create it. More to the point, the new standard will play a hugely important role in upcoming products from Cupertino.

EU plans further cut in iPod volume levels

The EU preparing to pass new laws that will limit the maximum volume of iPods, iPhones and other MP3 players to an even lower extent than the current volume limitations. Meglena Kuneva, the European Commissioner for Consumer Affairs, will unveil an EU mandate for all firms producing personal music devices. It will state that in future all devices will have a built-in default level, said to be around 80 decibels. More iMac and MacBook refresh rumors pop up

Two separate reports came in today on upcoming consumer Macs.  French site MacForever says the new iMacs will have SD card slot(s) and Quad core processors.  Interestingly, Quad-core Intel i7s were released this week which are the fastest mobile processors money can buy.  iMacs traditionally have had mobile processor chips (except the G5 edition) so this wouldn't be a stretch.  MacForever even speculates that the high end iMac may contain a Xeon processor, something that until now was reserved for Mac Pros and XServes.

If we did not receive any additional information concerning new models of Mac to be released soon, several hints indicate that new products are most likely around the corner. Apple seems to be working hard on emptying its stocks for several models. In France, a large distributor (Carrefour) is offering 50 to 100 € discount on iMac, another one (FNAC) is offering rabat on iMac but also on MacBook and Mac Pro. MIT's just unveiled a new prototype of a braille labelmaker / printer, the 6dot. Though not the first, MIT's model is apparently more advanced, easier to use, and cheaper than currently available models. ZX-Spectrum-Emulator im App Store

Nach Mega Drive, MSX und C64 gibt es nun den vierten Emulator im App Store und hoffentlich hat der Entwickler von ZXGamer daran gedacht, das Basic gut genug zu verstecken. Wie bei C64 sind die Spiele direkt eingebunden, weitere sollen nach Klärung von Lizenzfragen folgen. Eingebaut sind Cyclone (Geschicklichkeit), Batty (Breakout) und Exolon (Action). Speziell letzterer Titel ist auf dem Spectrum durchaus bekannt.

Sassafras has released v6.2 of K2 KeyAuditor & KeyServer, its software package used to manage software licenses. The latest version adds new measurement metrics into application usage tracking so that re-allocation of unused software licenses can become fully automatic based on usage patterns. An early look at the Motorola Cliq suggests that the device may be heavily flawed if released in its current state. Instinct HD hands-on

So, we got this little guy in the mail today and naturally cracked it right out of its box. We have to say, we're impressed with the feel of the phone and the general responsiveness of the touchscreen, though the software seems to be biting off a lot more than it can chew when it comes to getting around. We noticed more than our fair share of lag when jumping from screen to screen, but there were times when the Instinct HD actually felt really snappy. We still can't say you'd be justified in dropping a cool $249.99 on this phone (especially with choices like the Pre, Hero, Tour, and forthcoming Pixi), but if you're an Instinct enthusiast, the photos below should get

AT&T: Google Voice breaks net neutrality rules

AT&T on Friday accused Google of running against net neutrality principles with its Google Voice service. A letter sent to the FCC by the carrier claims that the service would technically violate the terms of the FCC's existing Internet Policy Statement, as well as proposed formal rules, as it deliberately blocks calls made through the phone gateway to certain rural numbers to save Google money. That unfairly discriminates against AT&T and other conventional carriers that are required to allow those calls, the message read.
