Zune HD box spotted?
According to one tipster, the Zune HD was a no-show today at both of his Houston-area Best Buys, so hopefully this little tidbit can make it up to that loneliest of all Zune fans. According to CrazyphoneGuy of Twitter and his prodigious Twitpic account, the picture above is of the Zune HD's new box. It looks quite a bit like existing Zune boxes, but that's certainly no slight. Anyone else track down the Zune HD at a Best Buy today, or was NVIDIA just fooling with us?

Enhanced Gmail Plug-in for BlackBerrys arrives, but only syncs one way
Lackluster Gmail support has been a real pain point for BlackBerry users, and we've really been hoping that this new "Enhanced Gmail Plug-in" would solve all that. It's out as of today, and we've certainly gotten some improvements, like support for archiving messages, marking spam and managing labels / stars. Unfortunately, these new management features are only live synced one way, from the phone to the Gmail server, so many of the actions that take place desktop side won't be reflected on the phone once that particular message has been picked up by the BlackBerry Internet Service. There's also the small problem of installing the thing: we haven't been successful so far on two different BlackBerries, and you have to make sure to uninstall the

Snow Leopard - "versandbereit"
Auch wenn das Versanddatum im Apple Store vom 28.08. wieder auf "September" zurückverlegt worden ist, meine Snow Leopard-Bestellung (Up-To-Date-Programm) änderte soeben ihren Status von "noch nicht versendet" auf "versandbereit" ("prepared for shipment"). Japanese Mac Mini buyer gets Snow Leopard?
It looks like someone isn't going to have to pay the $10 up-to-date program fee. Engadget Japan is reporting that their tipster bought a Mac Mini in Japan on August 20th which included a Snow Leopard installation DVD. Is it possible that a few slipped out on the wrong pallet before the supposed August 28th release date, or is this another hoax? Either way, in a week, this likely won't matter.

Lucky Mac mini buyer got Snow Leopard disc in the box?
If his story is to be believed (and it seems pretty believable), an anonymous tipster to Engadget Japanese got a nice surprise with his recent Mac mini purchase: a Snow Leopard install disc. It's one of those vanilla hardware-specific install discs, dubbing itself Mac OS version 10.6, and clearly packing the goods if the screenshots don't lie. Wieder Hoffnung für Anwendung mit Obama-Kunst
Wenn Apple bei Ablehnungen von iPhone-Anwendungen in einem Punkt konsequent war, dann bei der Verwendung von verfremdeten Politikerbildern. Ganz gleich ob sie in satirischer oder künstlerischer Absicht verwendet wurden, die Absage war ihnen fast sicher. Getroffen hatte es auch die "Wallpaper Gallery" von Start Mobile, in der das bekannte "HOPE"-Bild vorkam, das einen (damals noch) US-Präsidentschaftskandidaten Obama zeigt.

Northern Michigan University teams with Motorola for campus-wide WiMAX
Northern Michigan University was fairly early to the game in offering laptops and campus-wide WiFi to its students, and it looks like it's now stepping things up even further with a little help from Motorola, which is providing the backend for NMU's new campus-wide WiMAX network (a first in the US). Better still, the university is also providing some brand new WiMAX-equipped ThinkPads to nearly 3,000 of the school's more than 9,000 students, and it's also making a range of laptop and desktop WiMAX adapters available to students with non WiMAX-enabled computers. With a radius of some 30 miles, the network will also encompass a number of off-campus sites, and be made available to local schools and municipal offices though a licensing arrangement.

Researchers create robots that can learn to lie and deceive, on purpose
Teaching robots to find "food" and share it with others seems like a fairly worthwhile and noble endeavor, no? Well, it apparently wasn't quite enough for a group of researchers from Switzerland's Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, who had the bright idea to to augment said robots with a new artificial neural network that let the robots learn a host of new abilities -- namely, scheming, lying and deceiving. Apparently, in their younger days, the robots would flash a light whenever they found food to let their buddies know where it was, but that of course caused the food to dwindle a lot quicker. Touch/iPhone: Neue Gameloft-Spiele angekündigt
Gameloft hat auf der Spielemesse gamescom die nächsten Produktionen für den iPod touch und das iPhone vorgestellt:
Eine Vorschau auf das Rennspiel Asphalt 5 gab es bereits auf der Apple-Entwicklerkonferenz WWDC im Juni (YouTube-Video). Jetzt hat Gameloft weitere Details nachgeliefert, als Veröffenltichungstermin wird der September genannt.
Asphalt 5 bietet einen Fuhrpark von mehr als 30 Fahrzeugen sowie zwölf verschiedene Rennstrecken von St. Tropez bis Las Vegas. Der Multiplayer-Modus lässt sich sowohl über Bluetooth wie auch das Internet spielen, eine integrierte Chat-Funktion erlaubt es, vor dem Rennen mit den Gegnern zu kommunizieren. Zudem soll man die Möglichkeit haben, aus dem Spiel heraus neue Strecken und Fahrzeuge zu erwerben.

Live-Streaming per App: Formel 1 und Fußball wohl auch
Bereits letzten Dienstag wollte die Telekom eigentlich die Vollversion ihrer Mobile TV-Anwendung veröffentlichen und damit die kostenlose Nutzung des Portals mittels Mobile TV Lite einschränken. Was in den letzten Tagen und Wochen im Bereich der neuen CPUs von Intel abgeht, scheint jetzt selbst dem Hersteller zu weit zu gehen. Torvalds nicht mehr in den Top 30 der Kernelentwickler von Linux
Die Linux Foundation hat den Report 2009 (PDF) zum Stand der Linux-Kernelentwicklung veröffentlicht. Neben vielen interessanten Statistiken enthält sie eine Fußnote, die besagt, dass Linus Torvalds seit dem letzten Report 2008 aus den Top 30 der Programmierer gefallen ist, die zum Kernel beitragen. Torvalds hatte den ursprünglichen Kernel weitgehend im Alleingang entwickelt. Er sei auch jetzt noch ein "aktiver und unverzichtbarer Teil" des Entwicklungsprozesses, heißt es im Report 2009 - er habe nur andere Aufgaben.

TomTom's iPhone car kit promo video is enticing, but still no mention of price or release date
Not to knock cellophane tape as a method for in-car iPhone navigation, but if you want to use the new TomTom app in a more proper setting, you'll want the official TomTom car kit. In addition to enhancing the GPS signal and charging your iPhone, it's also got hands-free dialing and a speaker that's (presumably) better than the phone solo for giving directions. At a rumored price of just under $200 with software, it's not a bad deal if you were planning to shell out $100 for the US maps, anyway. We're still on the fence, but the hypnotic soundtrack of the promotion video is admittedly alluring. See for yourself after the break.

Ein Mac-Spiel von Namco - das ist zunächst eine gute Nachricht. Allerdings muss die schlechte gleich hinterhergeschickt werden, denn bei dem Spiel mit dem Namco-Logo im Vorspann handelt es sich nicht um Ridge Racer oder Soul Calibur, sondern um ein Remake des 82er Automatenspiels Burger Time.

Apple's response to FCC seems somewhat strange
Apple today posted an interesting response to the FCC inquiry into their denial of the Google Voice application. In a nutshell, it isn't AT&T that influenced Apple to deny Google Voice, though they do have a "no VoIP on AT&T's network agreement" in place and have since the beginning.
The reason they gave for denying the app (or keep it in purgatory as they say) is that:
The application has not been approved because, as submitted for review, it appears to alter the iPhone’s distinctive user experience by replacing the iPhone’s core mobile telephone functionality and Apple user interface with its own user interface for telephone calls, text messaging and voicemail. Wasserzeichen-Plug-in für iPhoto
Wenn es darum geht, zumindest einen Minimalschutz für die eigenen Bilder im Web einzubauen, haben sich Wasserzeichen etabliert. In iPhoto kann jedoch kein Text auf das Foto eingefügt werden, aber dafür ist nun Impression erschienen. iPhone: Gibt Apple den C64-Emulator nun doch frei?

Apple denies rejecting Google Voice
Apple on Friday took an unusual approach in its official response to the FCC's inquiries over the rejection of Google Voice for the App Store and denied that it had rejected the app at all. The company instead claims that it "continues to study" the software and now says its primary issues are with the integration of the app, which Apple insists duplicate too many iPhone features.

Google refutes USA Today report on blocked Skype application
While Apple was busy batting away the FCC with its litany of reasons why its app approval process is totally hunky-dory, Google was apparently having it's own VoIP-related firefight. It seems that an article in the USA Today which hit newsstands this morning alleges that the internet giant sought to block (dare we say reject) a full Skype application from making its way into the Android Market.
