Video: Arduino-based 'insecure, egotistical' robot band
One part gadget, one part art project, and 100% awesome, the Cybraphon is a MacBook powered, Arduino-based mechanical band housed in an antique wardrobe. Including an organ, cymbals, a motor-driven Indian Shruti box (played with 13 robotic servos, no less), and a gramophone, it relies on infrared motion detectors to sense when it has an audience. A number of factors, including the amount of attention it gets on Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter, help the device determine its "mood," which in turn determines when the "band" plays, and what material it selects. Sicherheitsupdate fürs iPhone: OS 3.0.1
Apple hat iPhone OS 3.0.1 veröffentlicht. Das Update bringt zwar keine neuen Funktionen, behebt aber eine gestern veröffentlichte Sicherheitslücke beim SMS-Empfang und wird daher allen iPhone-Besitzern dringend empfohlen.
Aufgepasst, wer sein iPhone gehackt hat: Komplikationen gibt es nach ersten Berichten allerdings beim Jailbreak über purplera1n, ebenfalls klagen wenige Nutzer darüber, dass nach dem Update kein inoffizielles Tethering mehr möglich sei.
Das Update ist je nach Konfiguration zwischen 200 und 300 MB groß und kann wie gewohnt über iTunes geladen und installiert werden.

GCO: Angriff auf die Messe-Server
Heute morgen waren die Server der GCO nicht zu erreichen. Es wurde schon vermutet, dass es sich dabei nicht um einen technischen Fehler handeln kann. Jetzt wird im GCO-Blog davon gesprochen, dass es sich um einen DoS-Angriff gehandelt hat. Es wird nun nach dem Verlauf geforscht.

Adobe scrubs out 12 Flash vulnerabilities
Adobe has released updated Mac, Windows and Linux distributions of Flash Player, bringing old and new editions of the software up to v9.0.246.0 and v10.0.32.18, respectively. Matching these are v9.1.3 releases of Reader and Acrobat. Some 12 Flash vulnerabilities are said to have been closed in Adobe software, 10 of which could be used to assume full or partial control of a computer.

New photos published by Sina Technology show a WCDMA version of the iPhone 3GS ready for use on China Unicom’s network. Microsoft announces pricing for Windows 7 family pack, upgrading
Micosoft's announced some Windows 7 pricing today, starting with a "family pack" option, which will allow users to upgrade three PCs to the Home Premium edition of the operating system for $149. The upgrade from XP or Vista to Home Premium for individual users, as previously announced, is $119. HTC sees decline from Android rivals, iPhone

Over the years we've found that usually, when a company takes a model number and slaps an extra letter on the end of it, there's some sort of feature or update they're highlighting. iPhone 3GS? HP debuts 2709m 27-inch 16:9 display
HP's just announced its new 27-inch, 16:9 display, the 2709m. This giant puts out a native 1080p picture, and boasts two HDMI inputs, one DVI and one VGA port. With a 30,000:1 contrast ratio, we can expect the display to be nice and vivid, and it's got two built-in 2-watt speakers, and a reported response time of 5ms. Take Back the Beep: how to disable voicemail instructions on Sprint
While we wait for all the carriers to get on board with nixing their endless, unhelpful voicemail pre-beep messages, we've already got instructions from Sprint on how to disable it for your own particular voicemail box on that network.
It's pretty easy:
Call your voicemail.
At the menu, press 3 for personal options.
Press 2 for greeting.
Press 1 to change the greeting.
To enable / disable the instructions, press 3.
Trust us, we did some serious searching for similar instructions on the other major carriers, but had no luck. I

Another quiet week, podcast fans -- but we were still excited by a few new toys, like the new Creative Zii EGG, the Kodak Zi8, and the Nikon D300s. We also spent some time with the new Sony Walkman X-series, which got us thinking about Sony's fortunes in this brave new world and how the company might need to change -- and speaking of change, both Apple and Palm need to rethink some of their current policies. Oh, and to top it all off, the Wall Street Journal totally whiffed that Apple-at-CES story, and we've got the scoop on how our old friend Ryan Block laid some truth on things. CrunchPad due in fall with 3G?

Und schon hat die SMS-Sicherheitslücke wieder ihre Relevanz verloren. Gerade freigegeben, steht das iPhone Software-Update auf Version 3.0.1 nun zum Download über iTunes bereit und bessert die hier beschriebene Angriffsmöglichkeit auf die SMS-Applikation des Gerätes wieder aus. NetNewsWire 3.2Beta now uses Google Reader for online feed syncing/reading
It is a match made in heaven really. The best native Mac feed reader (no offense Vienna, Safari, Mail.app) has always been NetNewsWire. Their online component, NewsGator, has always been a little lacking behind Google Reader, however. That was then, this is now.
NetNewsWire 3.2Beta now syncs your NetNewsWire feeds through the Google Reader engine allowing you great offline access that is tied directly to your Google account (for sharing feeds with your friends, etc - - if you are into that sort of thing).

LG's BL40 "Chocolate" phone sashays its way through new ad
We've already gotten a pretty good look at LG's stylish new BL40 phone (also simply known the new "Chocolate") courtesy of some official shots, but no phone launch would be complete without an over the top ad, and LG's naturally got that covered as well. iPhone SMS patch to be ready by Saturday?
A new iPhone security update should be available on Saturday, claims a spokesperson for the device's UK carrier, O2. "We will be communicating to customers both through the website and proactively," the spokesperson says. Heute nachmittag hat sich ein kleiner Unfall auf der Leipziger Messe ereignet. Aus einem der gläsernen Verbindungsgänge ist eine Scheibe aus dem Rahmen gefallen und hinabgestürzt. The BBC has quoted O2's spokespeople on an upcoming iPhone update scheduled for tomorrow:

According to UK carrier O2, the SMS-based iPhone security hole that Charlie Miller unveiled on Black Hat this week should be patched by this weekend. An O2 spokesperson claimed the update would be pushed through iTunes this Saturday, says BBC. Am Stand von GameTwist konnte ich ein nettes Spiel im Retrolook anspielen: Final Blow. Bei diesem Game handelt es sich um einen klassischen Shooter wie R-Type, der horizontal vor sich hin scrollt. Samsung YP-R0 outed, not exactly groundbreaking

Microsoft hat auf die kürzlich bekannt gewordenen Umgehung der Echtheitszertifizierung von Windows 7 RTM reagiert und den von chinesischen Crackern entwendeten Produktschlüssel eines OEM-Herstellers auf eine schwarze Liste gesetzt. Bereits vor einem knappen Jahr angekündigt, liefert Harman Kardon im August endlich die neue Kompaktanlage mit iPod-Anschluss MS 100 aus.
Die ansteckbare Dockingstation ist mit mit allen iPod-Modellen ab der vierten Generation kompatibel (ausgenommen der iPod shuffle), zusätzlich bietet das MS 100 noch einen UKW/RDS-Radioempfänger sowie einen CD-Player, der neben gewöhnlichen Audio-CDs auch CD-Rs, CD-RWs, Enhanced CDs sowie MP3- und Windows Media Audio (WMA)-Discs unterstützt. Apple has big plans to expand its high street retail presence in Europe and has hired a leading agent to manage the expanding network there.
The company has hired Chris Braithwaite, a partner at Cushman & Wakefield, to become senior director of European real estate at Apple, Retail Week informs.

Alcatel-Lucent bestätigt Jahresprognose nach leichtem Gewinn
Alcatel-Lucent ist im zweiten Quartal 2009 (bis 30. Juni) in die Gewinnzone zurückgekehrt. Deutsche Mac-Messe mac2.009 "auf unbestimmte Zeit verschoben"
Dabei klang es noch im Frühjahr so viel versprechend: "mac2 - weil es zwei Welten gibt für mac: für private Nutzung und für Profis". mac2 sollte eine deutsche MacExpo werden, wo sich Mac-Benutzer aus allen Bereichen treffen und austauschen sollten. Das Konzept aber schien nicht mehr aufzugehen. Der Veranstalter hat daher die Messe in den Kölner Rheinparkhallen im Oktober "auf unbestimmte Zeit verschoben", vulgo abgesagt.

Warhammer-Online: Ab Herbst auch für Mac
Schon zu Beginn des Jahres raunte man sich auf den Schlachtfeldern zu, dass es bald auch auf dem Mac ans Eingemachte gehen würde. Warhammer-Online: Age of Reckoning (WAR) sollte ende Juni dieses Jahres ausgeliefert werden. Nintendo: iPhone mitverantwortlich für niedrigere DS-Verkäufe
Keine neuen Rekordverkäufe konnte Nintendo für die Wii und die Handheldkonsole DS vermelden. Mit dem iH15 hat iHome ein neues iPod-Soundsystem im Programm, das zusätzlich noch als farblich variierende Lichtquelle dient. So kitschig das Konzept klingen mag, einmal angeschlossen erweist sich der Würfel mit 14 Zentimetern Kantenlänge als nettes Gimmick für das Wohn- oder Schlafzimmer.
Die Audioqualität der verbauten Kombi aus zwei Stereolautsprechern und einem passiven Subwoofer ist durchaus passabel und sollte für den Einsatz auf dem Nachttisch sowie in kleineren Räumen durchaus genügen, audiophile Ergüsse darf man in dieser Preiskategorie und angesichts der kompakten Gerätegröße sowieso nicht erwarten. Über zwei angenehm große Tasten auf der Oberseite des Wüfels lässt sich die Lautstärke regeln.

Shake endgültig eingestellt?

3D TV channel coming to UK next year, 3D-ready set and glasses required
We can still remember the days, not too long ago, that HD channels were but a sparse luxury. Now of course they're a dime a dozen, but you can still look onward to the next big thing, which BSkyB is wagering will be 3D. The satellite broadcast is gearing up to launch a 3D television station next year to showcase movies, and sports -- the latter of which we're thinking will be the biggest draw. Any customer with a Sky+ HD box can receive the transmission, but you're also gonna need to look past that ragged old flat-panel HDTV and instead use a 3D-ready set and glasses. LG unveils new slim design LCD HDTVs due this fall
Sure it's summertime in New York and not January in Las Vegas, but that didn't stop LG from rolling out a couple new lines of LCD HDTVs today. The new SL80 and SL90 models don't bring new high water marks on the spec sheets, but feature LG's take on the "borderless" design trend that's the rage these days, built from a single edge to edge piece of glass with a slim bezel and Invisible Speaker design. The top of the line SL90 is due later this year for an unspecified price range in 42- and 47-inch sizes with LED backlighting contributing to its 3,000,000:1 claimed contrast ratio and 1.15 inch depth, plus 120Hz TruMotion processing. Time Warner Cable reselling WiMAX later this year in Charlotte, Dallas, and two mystery markets

Microsoft reworks mobile strategy after tough year
The president of Microsoft's Entertainment and Devices division, Robbie Bach, told several Wall Street analysts that the company is in the process of reworking its Windows Mobile strategy following a "challenging year," according to Betanews. DSi v1.4 firmware happening now in Japan, bringing Facebook connectivity along for the ride
Back at E3 2009 it was announced that Nintendo would roll out the capability to upload photo to Facebook from the DSi. Well, we're hearing from Engadget Japanese that that firmware updating is now occurring. It's a pretty minor update which includes the aforementioned ability to upload photos to Facebook, and brings a faster "image display speed" in the DSi's camera. We're sure there's some behind the scenes tweaking going on too, right? No word on when this update will hit elsewhere, but we'll keep our eyes on our DSi until it happens. You know, for work. 67th St. NYC Apple Store expected to open in November
The upcoming Apple Store located on 67th Street and Broadway in NYC is expected to be completed before Thanksgiving, a construction worker told the Westside Independent.
